Woodruff's Gem Spoiled in 1-0 Loss Miracle defeat Manatees in Series Opener By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/21/2015 11:18 PM ET Fort Myers, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle (20-21) shutout the Brevard County Manatees (17-23) 1-0 on Thursday night at CenturyLink Sports Complex. The Miracle scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning against Tyler Spurlin. Tanner Vavra doubled to right field and advanced to third when Clint Coulter committed a fielding error with no outs. Zach Granite then singled through the right side to score Vavra. Spurlin did not allow any more baserunnerså. Fort Myers' starter Brett Lee (1-2, 2.14 ERA) posted eight scoreless frames to earn the win. He allowed seven hits and one walk. He fanned six. Brandon Peterson struck out the side in the ninth to record his first save of the season. Brandon Woodruff posted seven shutout innings in a no-decision. He surrendered just four hits and a walk. He struck out two batters. Spurlin (1-1, 3.14 ERA) allowed just the unearned run in the eighth on two hits. Chris McFarland, Jose Pena, and Omar Garcia each recorded two hits in the loss. McFarland had two doubles. He leads the Florida State League with 12 on the year. The two clubs will continue the series in Fort Myers tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (2-3, 2.83 ERA) will start for Brevard County. The Miracle will send LHP Luke Westphal (2-2, 4.37 ERA) to the bump. Brevard County Box Score By far the best start of the year for Brandon Woodruff. Hitting woes continue. Brevard County Game Log

Brevard County Offense Comes Alive in Series Finale Coulter's Big Day Leads Manatees to 8-4 Victory By By: Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/20/2015 4:32 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/7/0/119206470/cuts/IMG_2726_6dg3g2ya_p5fk4k4r.JPG Clint Coulter, seen above, had two hits including a home run in Wednesday's win over Clearwater. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' (17-22) bats woke up in the middle innings to take advantage of defensive miscues by the Clearwater Threshers (19-21) to take the series finale, 8-4, on Education Day Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. It would be the Threshers who would take the early lead as Clearwater recorded back-to-back one-out singles off of Manatees starter Wei-Chung Wang in the top of the second. When Wang followed with a walk to Drew Stankiewicz, the bases were loaded for Emmanuel Marrero in his first at-bat for the Threshers. Marrero singled to right to score Willians Astudillo but that's as much as Clearwater would get as Wang buckled down by striking out Chase Harris and getting J.P. Crawford to foul out to left. Brevard County would equalize in the bottom of the fourth with the inning kick started by a one-out double down the left field line by Clint Coulter. Following a Victor Roache strikeout, Garrett Cooper socked a double of his own, the reward of an at-bat that saw him foul off several pitches with two strikes. The seesaw would continue in the top of the fifth, this time courtesy of a two-out rally initiated by consecutive singles up the middle by Crawford and Andrew Pullin. Chace Numata's double to deep center brought in both runners to put Clearwater back in front. The game would be decided in the bottom of the fifth inning, which started with a Jose Pena double to left center. Angel Ortega then hit a chopper towards short that Crawford booted, allowing Ortega to reach and Pena to move to third. The 'Tees then cut the lead to one when Omar Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Pena. Chris McFarland's base hit put two on for Taylor Brennan. During the at-bat, Threshers starting pitcher Victor Arano uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the runners to move up. Brennan hit a grounder to second that was thrown away by Marrero on, what would have been, a close play at first. The error allowed two runs to score and gave the Manatees the lead that they would not relinquish. The play would also bring Arano's day to an end as Jesen Dygestile-Therrien came in to pitch. On the second pitch, Coulter delivered a drive into the bullpen in left field for his Florida State League leading ninth home run of the season to cap a five-run frame. Brevard County continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Garcia reached on a two-out fielding error by Astudillo at third base. The inning was kept alive for McFarland, who would be presented with an RBI opportunity when Garcia stole second, his 13th of the season. McFarland would make the sequence with a base hit to center, bringing Garcia around to up the lead to four. Clearwater chipped away at the lead in the top of the seventh as Crawford led off with a single to center against Mark Williams and then advanced to third as Garcia overran the ball. He would score shortly thereafter when Pullin grounded to short. Williams then gave up a single to Numata, coaxed a fly out from Dylan Cozens, a base hit to Astudillo, which brought the tying run to the plate in the person of Aaron Brown. He would escape further damage by getting Brown to ground out to second. The Manatees would get themselves an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, largely thanks to new Threshers reliever Harold Guerrero. He would walk Coulter and Roache to start the inning. Cooper followed with a fly out to deep right that allowed Coulter to tag up and move to third. The nightmare continued for Guerrero as he walked Cameron Garfield to load the bases and then Pena, which brought in Coulter for the 'Tees eighth and final run. Guerrero threw 18 pitches in just one third of an inning pitched. Just six pitches were thrown for strikes. Preston Gainey came in to pitch the final two innings for Brevard County, retiring all six batters he faced. Coulter had the breakout day amongst Manatee hitters, going two-for-three with two extra base hits, three RBI and reached base in three of four plate appearances. McFarland recorded two more hits, bringing his Florida State league-leading total to 51. Wang (2-1, 5.82 ERA) picked up his second win of the season by going five innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one. He retired 10 consecutive hitters between the second and fifth innings. The Manatees now travel to Fort Myers for a four-game weekend series with the Miracle starting at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 5.34 ERA) will take the mound against LHP Brett Lee (0-2, 2.81 ERA).

Brevard County 8, Clearwater 4 A cryptogram is a puzzle where you are given a short quotation or phrase with each letter of the alphabet replaced with a different letter. You then have to figure out which letter is which and what the phrase says. I was working one the other day that I will paraphrase (since I don't remember the exact phrase) as: The ancient Greeks were fond of a game which was similar to the modern sport of baseball. This was the origin of the importance of the term "Homer". Well Clint Coulter played Ulysses today with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. He added a walk and a double, scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Really though, the Manatees were awful yesterday and the Threshers were just as bad today. They made 4 errors. Chris McFarland was caught between first and second after a run scoring hit and nobody covered first so he got back in safely. Harold Guerrero faced 5 batters in the 7th, walking 4. The other worked the count to 3-2 before hitting a fly deep enough for Clint Coulter to tag up at second and go to third. Chris McFarland and Taylor Brennan both had 2 hits, Garret Cooper and Jose Pena had doubles. Wei-Chung Wang went 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 runs. He had 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Mark Williams and Preston Gainey worked 2 innings each to close out the game. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log The game story will be added later in a separate post.

Errors Doom Manatees in 6-2 Loss By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/19/2015 11:21 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/9/4/124065994/cuts/McFarland_7wookl40_gtu38cx0.JPG Chris McFarland, pictured above, collected his FSL leading 49th hit of the season in Tuesday's loss. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (16-22) had a hand in their undoing on Tuesday, committing four errors in a 6-2 loss to the Clearwater Threshers (19-20) at Space Coast Stadium. The Threshers seized the initiative in the opening frame, led by Andrew Knapp's double to left off of Manatees starting pitcher Eric Marzec. Dylan Cozens followed with a base hit to center, which brought home Knapp for the game's first run. One of the game's biggest moments came in the bottom of the second inning. Garrett Cooper appeared to have legged out a one-out single to third, but was out ruled by the umpire when he was tagged by Willians Astudillo returning to the bag, claiming that Cooper had made the turn towards second base. Cooper and manager Joe Ayrault would be ejected for their protests. Clearwater continued to flex their muscle in the top of the third when Andrew Pullin crushed a two-run home run to right, his third of the season, to make it 3-0. The homer was Pullin's only hit of the game but it continues his success against the 'Tees this season. In five games against Brevard County, Pullin is hitting .286 with three extra base hits and five RBI. The Manatees would manufacture in a run in the bottom of the fourth, which got started when Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch for the eighth time this season. That was followed by a walk to Victor Roache. Both runners advanced a base when Rafael Neda sacrificed. Paul Eshleman followed with a single to right, which scored Coulter for the first Manatees run but Eshleman would get caught in a rundown between first and second when the relay throw home was cut off. Threshers starting pitcher Colin Kleven would escape further damage when he struck out Steven Halcomb to end the inning. The game from a Brevard County perspective could be best summarized by the events in the top of the fifth inning. Knapp would reach when a ground ball went through Halcomb's legs. Cozens then came to the plate and hit a ball to right that Coulter missed while attempting to make a sliding catch. That would put two runners in scoring position for Astudillo, who obliged with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Knapp. Following a strikeout by Aaron Brown, Angelo Mora's base hit to center would score Cozens, who had stolen third. The Threshers would tack on one more run in the sixth without the benefit of a base hit. Chase Harris walked to start the inning and then attempted to steal second with one out and Pullin at the plate. Eshleman's throw went over second and into centerfield, where the ball was overrun by Omar Garcia. Those two errors allowed Harris to score all the way from first to make it 6-1. On a positive note for the 'Tees, relievers Stephen Peterson and Scott Lieser did not allow another base runner for the remainder of the game. Brevard County salvaged a final run in the bottom of the eighth, which started with a Garcia base hit. Chris McFarland singled to right, which moved Garcia to second. It was the 49th hit of the season for McFarland, making him the leader in the Florida State League in that category. A wild pitch by Clearwater reliever Edubray Ramos then moved both runners up a base. After a Taylor Brennan strikeout, Coulter hit a sacrifice fly to right to score McFarland, his 27th RBI of the season. The inning then came to a close when Roache struck out swinging. The Manatees then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth against Cody Forsythe. Kleven (3-2, 4.11 ERA) bounced back from a rain-shortened start last Friday by pitching six innings, giving up just one run on six hits, striking out five while walking one to earn the win. Marzec (0-1, 6.75 ERA) went four innings in his first start of the season with the Manatees, surrendering three runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. Both teams will have to bounce back quickly as they play an Education Day game on Wednesday at 10:35 A.M. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 5.88 ERA) will get the start against RHP Victor Arano (0-4, 6.12 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Eric Marzec went 4 innings, gave up 8 hits, 3 for extra bases, two walks and two wild pitches. Somehow, only 3 runs scored in that time. The Manatees had 9 singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. However, two were wiped out on double plays and two were out on the basepaths. Clint Coulter and Victor Roache were the only two starters who failed to get a base hit, although Coulter figured in both runs. Clint has now been hit by pitch 8 times. That's a pretty alarming rate for a key player. Brevard County Game Log

Manatees were absolute garbage tonight. I will do the link report in the early morning. Early start for the Manatees tomorrow.
-
Ayrault and Garrett Cooper have been run in the 2nd inning. Not sure how the Manatees are going to arrange the fielding now. McFarland is the DH so they are down an infielder. Edit. They put Neda in at first.

I keep having to remind myself that it's still early. Nick Ramirez is having a year like 2012 Hunter Morris so far though. Morris had: .303/.357/.563 versus Ramirez .301/.370/.496 this year. Does this mean Nick has made some kind of breakthrough at the plate? He is more OBP heavy and less slugging heavy than Hunter.

The win also bettered its record against Jacksonville to 7-2 on the year. Game 1: Shuckers 4, Suns 0 Jacob Barnes (W, 1-4) gave the bullpen some much-needed rest in a strong performance in game one, going five of the seven innings and allowing just four base runners on three hits and a walk. The righty from Fort Myers, FL allowed just one Suns' batter to reach scoring position. Biloxi (23-16) got on the board with a bang in the fourth inning when Nick Ramirez (3x3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) blasted his seventh home run of the season out to right field, giving the Shuckers a 1-0 lead. Ramirez now ranks first in the Southern League with 30 RBIs and his seven long balls are tied for third. The Shuckers opened up the floodgates in the fifth when Kyle Wren (1x4, R, SB) led off the frame with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Shaw (0x2). That's when Biloxi started a doubles parade with Orlando Arcia (1x3, RBI, R, 2B), Ramirez and Michael Reed (2x2, RBI, 2B, BB, 2 SB) to add on three more runs and give the Shuckers a 4-0 cushion. Biloxi Box Score Game 1 Biloxi Game Log Game 1 Game 2: Shuckers 5, Suns 1 Hiram Burgos (W, 1-0) made his first start since being promoted from Class-A Advanced Brevard County, and the former big leaguer did not disappoint. Burgos allowed one run on four hits while walking four in the outing. Biloxi grabbed the lead on a RBI double by Parker Berberet (1x3, RBI, 2B) that brought home Brandon Macias (2x3, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3B) and gave the Shuckers a 1-0 lead. The Shuckers struck for four more runs in the fifth, against reliever Brian Ellington, as Tyrone Taylor (2x3, R, 2B, BB) sparked the offense with a one-out double. After a walk to Ramirez, two batters later, Reed singled home Taylor to add insurance for Biloxi. Macias tripled to center scoring Ramirez and Reed to give the Shuckers a four-run advantage. Wren singled Macias home in the next at-bat to make it a 5-0 game. Wren has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. He has also reached safely in 18 of his last 19 games. Jacksonville (15-23) got through to the Shuckers' pitching in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Viosergy Rosa that plated David Adams from first, which brought the Suns within four and forcing Burgos from the game. Austin Ross (0.2 IP, SO) and Wirfin Obispo (IP, BB, SO) held down the Suns offense to finish the game and secure the sweep. Arcia's double in game one, paired with a walk in game two, extended his on-base streak to 20 games, setting a new franchise record. Threshers Top 'Tees In Pitchers' Duel Leibrandt, Ortega Throw Complete Games By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees 05/18/2015 10:35 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/2/2/125226022/cuts/IMG_9104_3b20rv95_gibp5ugz.JPG Angel Ortega, pictured below, turns a double play in the ninth inning of Monday night's game. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Viera, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers (18-20) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (16-21) 2-1 in a true pitchers' duel on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. Both starting pitchers, Brandon Leibrandt (4-2, 2.38 ERA) and Jorge Ortega (3-3, 2.44 ERA), tossed nine-inning complete games. Leibrandt allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five. Ortega surrendered two runs - one earned - on seven hits. Neither pitcher walked a batter and Ortega fanned six. The Manatees opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Clint Coulter led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Coulter then advanced to third on a balk. Leibrandt had two balks in the game. After a strikeout, Garrett Cooper singled on a line drive up the middle to give the Manatees a 1-0 lead. Clearwater tied the game in the seventh. Dylan Cozens reached on a fielding error by second baseman Chris McFarland. Willians Astudillo then singled to center and moved Cozens up to second. The next batter, Aaron Brown, launched a deep fly into center field. Omar Garcia tracked the ball down and was able to double off Astudillo at first thanks to a strong relay throw. Cozens moved to third on the play. Mitch Walding stepped up and singled on a liner to right to tie the score. The Threshers took the lead for good in the following inning. With one out, Angelo Mora tripled into the right center field gap. Andrew Pullin then kept a line drive just fair down the right field line. Pullin's double scored Mora and gave Clearwater the 2-1 lead. Leibrandt retired the final 17 batters of the game after a bit of a shaky start to his outing. Entering Monday, there were just three complete games recorded in the Florida State League this season and two of the three were of the seven-inning variety. For Ortega, it was his second complete game of the year. The Manatees and Threshers will play again tomorrow in Viera. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m RHP Eric Marzec (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his 2015 Brevard County debut. The Threshers will send RHP Colin Kleven (2-2, 4.66 ERA) to the hill.

Clearwater 2, Brevard County 1 Brilliant start by Jorge Ortega was wasted by the Manatees. Ortega threw a 95 pitch complete game. He gave up an unearned run in the seventh, which tied the game, on a 2 out single. In the 8th, with one out, Angelo Mora tripled followed by an Andrew Pullin double which scored the winning run. Ortega's line was: 9 IP, 7 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 ER. Certainly one of the better pitched games this year by a Manatee. The Manatee run came in the 4th when Clint Coulter doubled and came in on a Garrett Cooper single. Following the Cooper single, Brandon Liebrandt retired the remaining 17 hitters of the game. Taylor Brennan now below .200 in the last 11 games with only 1 walk. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Game Log I will add the story later in a separate post.

Last 10 Games: Chris McFarland 39 AB, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 6 BB, 8 K, .462 AVG Victor Roache 39 AB, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 18 K, .359 AVG Clint Coulter 42 AB, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 0 BB, 11 K, .119 AVG Coulter in a slump, Roache still striking out too much but hammering it when he hits the ball, McFarland hot again. Very notable that Clint has zero walks over this time since he is a patient hitter when at his best, I think.

Rocky Third Inning Costs Manatees Series Finale By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees 05/17/2015 11:44 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/2/4/124496624/cuts/Roache_1_5l30v28o_rpl1wbo5.JPG Victor Roache, seen here from a game earlier this season, collected two hits in Sunday's loss. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) A third inning filled with miscues was ultimately the Brevard County Manatees' (16-20) undoing on Sunday, as they dropped the series finale to the Tampa Yankees (21-16) 4-1 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. It would be Brevard County who would strike first in the top of the third inning, which started with a leadoff triple to right center by Chris McFarland. He would score when Taylor Brennan followed with a ball towards shortstop that Tyler Wade misplayed into an error. Brennan would be picked off of first shortly after that by Yankees' starter Anyelo Gomez and then Clint Coulter grounded out to short. However consecutive errors by Tampa third baseman Billy Fleming would allow Victor Roache and Garrett Cooper to reach base but Paul Eshleman's ground out concluded the inning. Tampa would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning. Fleming would lead it off with a walk but would be forced out at second on a grounder by Abiatal Avelino. He would steal second with Tyler Wade at the plate, who then struck out. Mark Payton was then hit by a pitch from Javi Salas to put a second runner on to bring Mike Ford to the plate. Avelino and Payton then successfully executed a double steal and they would come around to score on a Ford single to center. The damage would continue as Salas hit Ericson Leonora and then walked Kyle Higashioka. It looked as if the inning would come to an end when Ty McFarland hit a grounder towards third but the ball hit the bag and caught Brennan in the chest, allowing Ford to score. The inning finally concluded when Brennan rebounded to retire Derek Toadvine. Following a 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the fourth, Salas would retire the last eight hitters he faced. For the day, Salas gave up two earned runs on three hits, while striking five and walking three in six innings. The 'Tees had an opportunity to rally in the top of the sixth when Roache hit a ground rule double to left. Cooper followed with a single to right, but Toadvine was able to throw out Roache at the plate. Cooper attempted to steal second with two strikes on Eshleman, but the inning came to an abrupt end when Eshleman struck out and Higashioka threw Cooper out at second. Tampa would get the insurance run they were looking for with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth. Higashioka singled to center off of Tristan Archer and then score on a deep drive to right that Coulter was unable to reel in at the wall. However, Coulter and Chris McFarland executed a perfect relay throw to Brennan to cut down Ty McFarland at third to bring the inning to a close. Brevard County would put up a fight in the top of the ninth against Yankee closer Angel Rincon. Eshleman singled to right and then moved up on a walk to Rafael Neda. Angel Ortega hit a grounder to short that would force Neda out at second and when Omar Garcia struck out swinging, the Yankees had won two of the three games in the weekend series. The Manatees return home on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Clearwater Threshers at 6:35 P.M. The two teams will send their top starter to the mound as RHP Jorge Ortega (3-2, 2.77 ERA) will face Threshers LHP Brandon Leibrandt (3-2, 2.66 ERA).

Shuckers split Sunday doubleheader with Jacksonville Shuckers get walk-off win for the first time in franchise history in game two Biloxi Shuckers 05/17/2015 6:20 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/8/8/125029888/cuts/Walkoff_ldnhri2e_9c986gdh.jpg Shuckers players mob Michael Reed after hitting a walk-off sacrifice fly to end game two (Jason Clark) HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Shuckers split Sunday's doubleheader at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, dropping the opener 8-7, then walking-off for the first time in franchise history in game two, thanks to a Michael Reed sacrifice fly, 2-1. The series is split 1-1 as the two clubs are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Monday in Huntsville. Biloxi maintains their post at the top of the South Division standings after the game two walk-off win. The Shuckers are now 7-3 in one-run games this season and 3-6 in seven inning contests. Game 1: Suns 8, Shuckers 7 Jacksonville (15-20) jumped all over Shuckers' starting pitcher Brooks Hall (2 IP, 8 R, 9 H, 2 SO) with five consecutive hits to start the game to bring in three runs. The big blast of the inning came off the bat of Suns' catcher Chadd Krist, a three-run homer to give the Suns an early 6-0 lead. Biloxi (20-16) responded with a four-spot of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Nathan Orf (1x3, R, BB) and Orlando Arcia (1x3, RBI, 2 R) reached base with one out and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch with Nick Ramirez (2x4, 3 RBI, R, 2B) at the plate, who hit a two-run single to bring in both runners and make it a 6-2 contest. Taylor Green (3x4, HR, 3 RBI, R, 2B) followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right. The homer by Green was his first at Joe Davis Stadium since September 6, 2010 against Mobile. The Suns were back at it in the second, plating two more runs to take an 8-4 lead off of a RBI double by Zack Cox and a sacrifice fly by Viosergy Rosa. The Shuckers scratched across a run in the third on a RBI double by Green to bring in Michael Reed (1x4, R) to make it a three-run game. A fielder's choice groundout by Arcia scored Adam Weisenburger (0x2, R, 2 BB) in the fourth to bring Biloxi within two in the fourth at 8-6. Ramirez doubled home Arcia in the sixth inning to inch the Shuckers within a run, but Biloxi could not get a run across in the seventh, ending the game on a 6-4-3 double play from Weisenburger. Hall (4-2, 3.92) suffered his second straight loss on the mound and has surrendered 12 runs over five innings on the mound. Jacksonville reliever Greg Nappo (3-0) got the win and Sean Donatello earned his league-leading 10th save. Game 2: Shuckers 2, Suns 1 Biloxi (21-16) won game two in walk-off fashion on a sacrifice fly in the seventh off the bat of pinch-hitter Michael Reed (Sac Fly, RBI). Orf started the inning with a flyout to right, then Tyrone Taylor (1x3, R) followed with a single and reached third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single by Weisenburger (2x2, HR, RBI, R) to set the stage for Reed. Jacksonville (15-21) got on the board first for the second time with a RBI double by Terrance Dayleg as the Suns opened the game with back-to-back-hits. Weisenburger tied things up with a solo homer in the third, his first of the season and first at Joe Davis Stadium since August 2, 2014, also against Jacksonville. Tyler Wagner (1x3, R) allowed just the one run in the first, but shut down the Suns the rest of the way. Yankees report: T-Yanks Take Series with 4-1 Win By Nick Flammia / Tampa Yankees 05/17/2015 4:45 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/4/6/124987246/cuts/CCX05172015_0330_BC_v_TY_B_tfiyb9ls_pv0bksye.jpg (Mark LoMoglio/Yankees) TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (21-16) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (16-20), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field, taking two of three in the series win. The Yankees brought over RHP Anyelo Gomez from extended spring to make a spot start after RHP Rookie Davis was deemed a late scratch. Gomez allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out four while not surrendering walk. Brevard County broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Chris McFarland led off with a triple and later scored on a groundball from Taylor Brennan. Tampa wasted no time retaliating. Billy Fleming walked to begin the bottom of the third. Abiatal Avelino replaced him at first base on a fielder's choice. With Tyler Wade at the plate, Avelino stole second. Manatee starter Javier Salas then hit Mark Payton. Avelino and Payton pulled off a double steal and Mike Ford hit a go-ahead, two-run single into center. Salas proceeded to hit Ericson Leonora with a pitch and walk Kyle Higashioka, loading the bases. Ford then scored as Ty McFarland reached on an error at third base by Tyler Brennan, giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Salas (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits in six innings, walking three while striking out five for Brevard County. A two-out rally provided some insurance for Tampa in the eighth. Higashioka singled into center as was chased home as McFarland hit a ball off the top of the right field wall. RHP Matt Marsh (1-0) dealt two scoreless innings in relief of Gomez. RHP Philip Walby worked around a leadoff walk in a clean seventh. RHP Angel Rincon picked up his sixth save of the season, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three in the final two innings. Fleming (2-for-2, BB) had his first multi-hit game as a Tampa Yankee. Higashioka (2-for-3, 3B, BB, R) hit his first triple of his career. Tampa 4, Brevard County 1 Javi Salas had one bad inning and it cost him the game. The Yankees turned one ground ball up the middle into 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd after the Manatees had opened up the scoring in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff triple by Chris McFarland and an RBI ground ball by Taylor Brennan. The Yankees then turned the ground ball single and two walks, two hit batsmen, an error and three stolen bases into 3 runs. The 6th inning was typical for the Manatees: Brevard County Top of the 6th Victor Roache hits a ground-rule double (10) on a fly ball to left field. Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to right fielder Derek Toadvine. Victor Roache out at home on the throw, right fielder Derek Toadvine to catcher Kyle Higashioka. Paul Eshleman strikes out swinging and Garrett Cooper caught stealing 2nd, catcher Kyle Higashioka to second baseman Abiatal Avelino. Three more men out on the bases again today. Javi Salas went 6 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K. Pretty good outing except for the 3rd as mentioned. Chris McFarland tripled, Victor Roache and Paul Eshleman had two hits. Walk-off Leaves Manatees With Doubleheader Split Woodruff Earns First Win Of Season In Game One Tampa, FL- In games that were played on opposite ends of the spectrum, the Brevard County Manatees (16-19) and Tampa Yankees (20-16) wound up splitting a series-opening doubleheader on Saturday night. The Manatees took Game One, 6-4 while the Yankees won Game Two on a walk-off sacrifice fly in extra innings, 2-1. The Manatees took the lead right away in Game One as Taylor Brennan hit a one-out double off of the right field wall in the top of the first. He would then advance to third base when Gabe Encinas uncorked a wild pitch with Clint Coulter at the plate. Coulter would slap a base hit back up the middle that was stopped by Yankee shortstop Abiatal Avelino, but by the time he got to his feet, he had no play as Brennan had scored and Coulter was about to reach first. After wasting a prime scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second, Tampa would come roaring back in the following frame, starting with a one-out walk to Tyler Wade. After a flyout by Miguel Andujar, Wade would take second with Mike Ford at bat. Ford promptly singled to left to tie the game and the wheels were in motion. Mark Payton followed with a single to left of his own and both runners would move up when Brandon Woodruff issued a wild pitch during Michael O’Neill’s at bat. After O’Neill walked, Ericson Leonora followed with a 2-run single to put the Yankees in front for the first time. Brevard County responded immediately in their following turn at bat, which started with a Garrett Cooper single to third that gave Andujar trouble. Paul Eshleman and Steven Halcomb both flew out following Cooper’s hit but Angel Ortega would keep the inning alive with a base hit to left, knocking Encinas out of the game. Omar Garcia welcomed reliever Chad Taylor to the game with a floater into left center to make score Cooper and when Payton overthrew second base, Ortega and Garcia moved up. Following a Chris McFarland walk, it appeared Brennan had hit an inning-ending grounder to first but Yankee first baseman Ty McFarland misplayed the ball into right field, allowing two runs to score. The Manatees would add two crucial insurance runs in the sixth. The rally would be keyed by Garcia, who bunted his way on for a hit against Evan Rutckyj. With McFarland at the plate, he would steal second and third on consecutive pitches, giving him 12 for the year. A McFarland walk would bring Brennan to the plate. Rutckyj threw a pitch inside that Kyle Higashioka could not get to and Garcia flew home to make it 5-3. The wild pitch also allowed McFarland to move up to second and he would come in moments later when Brennan hit one through the legs of Avelino at second. Trevor Seidenberger came into close the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be without tension. The frame would start with a walk to Avelino. Following a strikeout of Wade, he would steal second with Miguel Andujar up. Andujar struck out but Ford worked a walk and Payton then singled to center to cut the lead to two. However, Seidenberger would strike O’Neill swinging to end the game. The ‘Tees would take the early lead once again Game Two, this time in the second inning. Cooper was the catalyst once again, this time beating pitcher Conner Kendrick’s throw on a one-out dribbler. Cameron Garfield then ripped a double down the left field line to put two in scoring position, which was followed by a walk to Rafael Neda. Ortega followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring Cooper home and give Brevard County the lead. Tampa would level the game in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Avelino legged out a base hit to second and then moved up when Manatees starter Clint Terry was called for a balk. Derek Toadvine, who had just been added to the roster earlier in the day, slapped a base hit to center to score Avelino to the game at 1. Terry (0-1, 2.55 ERA) would retire the last 10 hitters he faced after the Avelino single and save for that brief stumble in the third, he was sharp in making the spot start, giving up just the one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking none in six innings. He would wind up with a no-decision as the Manatees could not push a run across despite having multiple runners on base and in each of his final two innings on the mound. After having the would-be winning run stranded at third to end the eighth against Mark Williams, the Yankees made sure the job was finished the following inning. The bottom of the ninth started with a single to right by Ford off of Preston Gainey, who then hit O’Neill as he was trying to bunt. Payton followed with a bunt just up the third base line that gave Eshleman no time to react. That loaded the bases for Leonora, who lifted a ball to center and when Garcia’s throw came up the first base line, Wade, who was serving as a pinch-runner for Ford, marched home to win it. In addition to his two stolen bases, Garcia went three-for-six over the course of the two games. McFarland’s third inning single in Game One, extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the most by a Manatee this season. However, that would come to an end in Game Two. Cooper would go four-for-eight for the doubleheader after being held hitless the prior three games. Woodruff (1-1, 5.34 ERA) had the best outing of his professional career, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and striking out three in six innings for his first win of the season. Seidenberger gave up his first run of the season in his ninth appearance but still recorded his second save of the season. The Manatees will go for the series win on Sunday afternoon as they send RHP Javi Salas (2-2, 2.80 ERA) to the mound against RHP Rookie Davis (2-3, 4.01 ERA) at 1:00 P.M.

After a pair of singles, RHP Chad Taylor (0-1) relieved Encinas with two outs. Omar Garcia hit an RBI single and advanced on an errant throw by Payton in center. RHP Trevor Seidenberger ended the Yankee threat by striking out the side for his second save of the year. Connor Kendrick started game two for Tampa and struck out the first four batters he faced. The southpaw allowed a sacrifice fly by Ortega in the second. Kendrick was tagged for one run on four hits in five innings, walking a pair while tallying a season-high six strikeouts in a no-decision. With two outs, Toadvine hit a game-tying single to center. The game went into extras, tied at 1-1. RHP Cale Coshow (1-0) made his Tampa Yankee debut and dealt a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth. Coshow surrendered a leadoff single in the ninth, but turned a 1-6-3 double play on a ball bunted back towards the mound. Ford led off the Yankees ninth with a single against RHP Preston Gainey (1-1). Wade entered as a pinch runner for Ford and advanced on a hit-by-pitch to O'Neill. Brevard County 6, Tampa 4 (Game 1) Brandon Woodruff went 6 innings to help save the bullpen for the nightcap and pick up a win. Trevor Seidenberger picked up a 1 inning save despite yielding his first run of the year. Offensively the Manatees had a lot of help from the Yankees' defense.
