  1. I agree but don't think the Brewers have the payroll to sign Bonifacio who will likely cost $5M AAV over 2 years. I think DM will be looking in the bargain bin for a platoon mate for Scooter since we are almost maxed out financially. For the few times we will need to sit Gennett (40 games) I would prefer we spend our remaining resources on a solid bullpen arm like Duke. Heck, Herrera would even be serviceable for 40 games at 2B (Career vs. LHP: .255/.309/.363). Personally I think resigning Duke is much more valuable than a light hitting platoon mate at 2B.
  2. Its possible but a lot of things need to fall into place. 1. Braun and Segura have bounce back years. 2. Davis, Peralta and Fiers do not regress but instead continue to improve. 3. Gomez, Lucroy, Garza and Galladro all produce similar to 2014. 4. Lohse, Ramirez and Lind avoid the DL and show minimal to no regression. 5. We, as a team, stay relatively healthy. That is a lot of "ifs". Last season we also benefited from other divisional teams losing major pieces for extended periods. Cards: Molina, Wacha and Garcia Pirates: McCutchen and Martin Reds: Votto, Phillips, Latos and Bailey Not sure we can plan on this happening again.
  3. Agreed. Mike Trout was drafted 25th. Are you trying to say 24 teams (including the all mighty Cardinals) had incompetent scouting departments in 2009? Teams miss on players every year. Its far from an exact science like other sports. most 1st round picks never make it to the bigs.
  4. What are you willing to give up for Alcantara? Being its within the division, he will likely cost us a little bit more than another team. I don't feel comfortable giving up a solid prospect, especially since our farm system is already running low on top tier talent, for a super utility player who projects best at 2B (which we already have covered). Ramon Santiago would provide similar value and likely cost the Brewers $3M or 2 years.
  5. I would prefer to non tender or trade Kintzler and either go with Pena or sign a buy low reliever like Crain, Motte or Adams. All could be had on a one year deal for around $1M and would offer more upside. I also like the idea of a couple of backloaded contracts to players like Bonifacio or Santiago and Duke. Maybe pay both $1M this season and significantly back load the other year or two.
  6. I could see Texas being interested in a pitcher like Gallardo with so many question marks in their rotation. Maybe we could get a Luke Jackson or Alex Gonzalez in return. Both project to be mid-rotation starters who will be ready in To step in within the next 1-2 years.
  7. If they do rest Aramis 1-2 days a week, this will provide Jimenez a opportunity to to get some big league at bats under his belt and allow Rogers a full season in AAA playing 3B. Hopefully one of them steps up and shows they deserve to start in 2016. Keeping Ramirez fresh could keep his production from dropping off to much.
  8. I don't think anyone is against trading Gallardo. The problem lies in the return that is being suggested (Scott Van Slyke) when Gallardo is worth much more especially to a team looking to contend next season. Like I previously stated, teams would be willing to give up a top 50-100 prospect for a full year of Gallardo. Why settle for a bench player who topped out as the #10 prospect in 2011 when you can get a pllayer who still projects to be a solid starter with some additional development? We don't need to dump salary but we have the ability to if the right package comes along.
  9. 1. Trade Gallardo or Lohse to Texas for Luke Jackson or Alex Gonzalez. 2. Sign Emilio Bonifacio (2yr/$9M) to platoon with Scooter. 3. Resign Duke (3yr/$10M) 4. Sign Crain (1yr/$1M) Rotation: Lohse/Gallardo, Garza, Peralta, Fiers and Nelson Bullpen: Broxton, Smith, Thornburg, Duke, Jeffress, Crain, Kintzler/Pena Lineup: Gennett, Braun, Lucroy, Lind, Gomez, Ramirez, Davis, Segura Bench: Maldonado, Rogers/Jimenez, Bonifacio, Parra, Herrera Payroll is $100-102M depending on which pitcher we trade.
  10. Why does there need to be excess value? Isn't his actual value of being a solid #3 starter on a comparable salary enough to get a decent return? Yes if his salary was below market valu.e the Brewers could get more in return for him but he still is well worth a top tier prospect as is.
  11. That is a little scary to think that we may be essentially done I have to believe DM and MA knew there was a chance Ramirez was coming back and have other moves in mind or money available to fill out the roster. Although having Jimenez or Rogers backing up the corners or a versatile player like Herrera on the bench is not a bad thing IMO. With Parra as our 4th OF we can go with Clark as our LH power bat off and sign someone like Santiago (2yrs/$3.5M) to platoon with Scooter.
  12. Replace Lohse with Fiers and I'm in. Although I'm not sure Seattle would be willing to trade both pitchers. Maybe Walker, Peterson and Hultzen would get it done. Walker, Peralta, Garza, Nelson and Fiers would still be pretty solid.
  13. With Lind now in the mix, I think Ramirez will be best suited batting 6th (Gennett, Braun, Lucroy, Lind, Gomez, Ramirez, Davis, Segura). Batting Gomez 5th allows his free swinging power and speed to both be played up. He will likely always have the green light since Braun and Lucroy are not counted on driving him home while he will still have plenty of runners to drive in with our two top on base guys in front of him.
  14. GoGo can fetch you far more than one high ceiling prospect. You could get a MLB ready starter like Taijuan Walker along with another top 100 prospect and a mid level pitcher (potential mid to back of the rotation starter). Gomez is considered a borderline elite player based on his production at a premium position, GG defense and team friendly contract (2yrs/$17M). And I agree with signing Lucroy to an extension soon. Maybe he will give the Brewers a discount for extending him 3 years prior to him hitting free agency. One can only hope.
  15. Gallardo has a much better track record than Marcum and has shown to be much more durable. Teams will pony up for proven and durable quality pitcher on a reasonable contract. I know Jeff Samardzija is considered to be a better pitcher than Gallardo but if he along with an over achieving Jason Hammel can return the Addison (#3 prospect), McKinney (#7 ranked A's prospect to end 2013) and Straily (#73 top prospect in 2012, who at 24 posted a 98 ERA+ over his first full season as a starter), I'm sure Gallardo is worth one top 50-100 prospect. I know someone mentioned Garin Cecchini (#55). I could see Luke Jackson (#70), Luis Severino (#62), Dominic Smith (#81), Hunter Dozier (#86) all being potential returns for Yovanni.
  16. Would we need to add another starter since Nelson can slide into the 5th spot? Gallardo, Garza, Lohse, Peralta and Nelson would be pretty solid. Not sure you will find anything better without spending $10-14M AAV on the open market. We cannot afford to continue signing FA starters with Braun's second extension starting in 2016 ($20M AAV) and our younger players hitting arbitration (Maldonado, Kintzler, Peralta, Fiers, Davis, Segura, Thornburg and Jeffress). We will also need to find money to extend Lucroy and/or Gomez come 2017. Didn't say I'd sign a starter who would command anywhere near the likes of Lohse or Garza. I'd just bring in a guy who could fill in the 5th spot in case of an injury or if Nelson struggles. There are any number of guys that fit that who come cheap every year. Look at Harang who Braves got for a mere $1 million or Capuano who earned $2.25. That's the type I'm talking about. Scrap heap but reliable guys. Maybe even bring back Narveson from Japan. With Estrada traded and under my scenario Fiers is dealt too, they'd need some insurance. Sorry I didn't realize you were talking about adding a starter for depth. Makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying.
  17. I can't remember the last time I paralleled parked. I avoid it at any cost... I attended Madison West High School which doesn't have a student parking lot which forced me to parallel park on the nearby streets every day. What made it worse was most of the streets within 2-3 blocks of the school only offered 2 hour parking, meaning every other class you would have to run out to your car and move it or risk getting a parking ticket. And believe me the meter maids were out there everyday marking tires. I remember hitting multiple cars daily, usually just the bumper) when attempting to park. Good thinmg my first car was a complete piece of crap. Although now I can parallel park effortlessly even in extremely tight spots.
  18. Toronto was just looking to dump Lind's contract where ever they could. Gallardo and Lohse both have one year left on their contact. One is an average pitcher who is reaching his declining years and the other is 36 years old. Neither of those guys is going to get a substantial prospect on their own. They would need to be paired with someone of value like Gomez. One year of a middle of the rotation starter with a reasonable salary is worth at least a top 50-75 prospect. Gomez would require three top 20 players froma good farm system (a top 15 MLB prospect along with another top 100 MLB prospect and a mid level player). Proven players are valuable to teams looking to contend. Look what we gave up for Marcum. Lawrie was ranked #26 in 2010. I think you are undervaluing Gallardo and Lohse.
  19. I believe it's actually for $14 million. I have mixed feelings on this. I am not that upset he's coming back, and we don't have better options in the minors to replace him. Barring some trade for a decent 3B, bringing A-Ram backed seemed to be basically a forgone conclusion. One other thing I saw brought up on Twitter: With Ramirez and Lind both having stints on the DL the past few seasons, it's going to be imperative the Brewers have a decent 1B/3B type on hand as a backup. And of course we already know Lind will probably need a platoon mate anyway. I like the Jimenez waiver claim even more now that Ramirez has been retained. Rogers can start the season in AAA giving us two decent options in case both go down at the same time. Depth at the corner IF positions was something this team lacked the last couple of years. Ramon Santiago might be a cheap option to platoon with Gennett while giving the last bench spot to either Clark who can play 1B and both corner OF spots or Herrera, the super utility player with no power.
  21. Thinking outside the box, I think the Lind trade opens up the possibility of using Khris Davis as centerpiece in a deal for a longer term solution at 3B opening up LF either for Parra or for Matt Clark. Davis would seem to have plenty of trade value and Clark would seem to be capable of putting up similar numbers. If you chose you could use Clark at 1B and Lind in LF. Lind loses a lot value once you put him in LF. His defensive value drops off significantly (Career UZR/150: 1B = -4.0, LF = -11.6). The better option is to extend Parra to a 2yr/$10M with a $6M team option ($1M Buyout). Having a starting caliber, gold glove outfielder who can play all three spots is invaluable to a team hoping to contend.
  22. This trade is definitely a step in the right direction. If Ramirez comes back our starting line up will be set. As others have already mentioned, our bench was limited last season because of Overbay and Weeks both being one dimensional players. Adding Rogers or Jimenez to play both corner infield spots, Parra to back up all three outfield positions is a good start. No adding a versatile platoon partner for Gennett (i.e. Bonifacio or Santiago) would only deepen our bench. Bonifacio will likely cost more than Santiago (2yr/$8M vs. 2yr/$4M). The last spot could go to Herrera if we sign Bonifacio since we still need a back up SS or a RH OF with some pop like Gomes or Ludwick to round out the bench. This group provides RR with flexibility late in games and when injuries do occur throughout the season. Our rotation should be set with Gallaro, Garza, Lohse, Peralta and Fiers unless Lohse or Gallardo is traded meaning Nelson would fill the 5th spot. I hope DM will sign a couple of veteran relievers off the scrap heap in January/February for depth. All in all, this roster is better constructed to handle the grind of a full season.
  23. Love this trade! Especially since we only gave up a non-tender candidate. Lind will likely start the majority of games with Rogers and Lucroy starting against lefties. I like the idea of using the money saved by not signing LaRoche to sign Bonifacio. This would give us a solid bench of Maldy, Rogers, Parra, Bonifacio and Herrera/H. Gomez to back up SS. DM is off to a fast start this offseason. His meeting with Mark A. must off lit a fire under his a$$. No we just need to figure out 3B, a platoon partner for Scooter, maybe another bench bat and a couple bullpen arms for depth. Keep it up Dougie!
  24. I think he will be handling all the duties of a scouting director but also working closely with DM to be groomed as his possible successor. So its technically a promotion for Montgomery instead of a lateral move.
