  1. tough to admit but on Carpenter's side there. huge game, best player, terrible call and he was walking away. hitter before had a bad call against him too. Last night went more our way than theirs.
  2. I think I'd have let Woodruff go with how good he looked last inning and how crunched the pen is. They have the arms to get through this if everything goes according to plan, but not much wiggle room if it doesn't (ala Hader last night)
  3. Jeez, just last year Gio was very good All Star level. was good for a couple months to start this year too, then fell apart, and has been fine for us again. I think this take on him is a bit overboard, it's not like he's been James Shields the last 3 years. Not like he's some star or anything either. That's my two cents.
  4. I'd guess Soria is available. If they PH hit here you can go Knebel, Soria, Jeffress. Assuming no more runs by MKE
  5. 2-3 extra runs would be great here so you could just let Woodruff go 3 innings then someone like Barnes to end it. all the top guys fresh for tomorrow, and Jeffress a day healthier. Chances are that would include a PH for Woodruff coming up though (unless I missed a double switch)
  6. Yea I've been one on the why doesn't Woodruff get a crack train this year too. Glad to see I wasn't crazy and he's contributing when needed. Next year's starting rotation could be so much different than this year with sigh high heat arms added to it in Woodruff and Burns, and even Nelson.
  7. Coach Cooper doesn't look at the scoreboard. Just get the W in front of you. After tonight there's most likely only 15 games left in the season if you win every game. I guarantee a championship team like the Cubs don't know that we're winning right now, pedigree. Heck, they probably don't even know MKE is 1.5 back
  8. Yea just unlucky on that hit, high outside fastball teh guy chased, got lucky. Just get the K or DP here and lets get outta here
  9. I was surprised it wasn't Granderson as well. Or just let Santana go instead of burning him so early. But my guess as to why Thames over Granderson and Shaw at that point is because Thames sucks on D. It's still very early in the game so want versatility later just in case. Personally I tihnk I just stick with Santana instead of using two guys. Santana has been doing well
  10. Cards own fault there. Coach Cooper never intentionally walks guys, can't show fear like that. Champions aren't afraid, get the guy out.
  11. Doesn't bother me at all. Get the enjoyment of listening to a Uecker called game while getting to watch and not just listen to the game. Best of both worlds. Yeah, what does it hurt? Realistically Uecker won’t be around much longer so I think it’s kind of a treat to hear him again. I watch most games on tv so I don’t get to hear him much anymore. Also, I really like Yelich. Yea as a kid I listened to almost every game on the radio at night while working. Really brings it back because I never have to anymore and watch it all on TV. Heck, I don't even own a radio other than in the car.
  12. Well played, good catch. Yea and then all the announcers saying everyone does it on every team Uecker is a national treasure.
  13. But do you see the logic when it comes down to the world series MVP? I don't. I thought it was a joke that LBJ didn't get the MVP in the first GSW/Cavs finals. I don't have a baseball example off the top of my head though. I'd guess maybe Bonds in 2002 but I have no idea on the stats. Spitballing here, never thought of it before now, but I would guess that it would be much more difficult to create a clear cut advantage in such a small sample though so likely very difficult. Basketball is a bit different with how much impact one player can have in a game. Taking an extreme example though like the movie example, say a SP threw 3 perfect games in his 3 starts but his team lost the other 4 games. To me that guy would almost assuredly be the MVP barring something miraculous from someone on the winning team. Also, good discussion. I realize there is no right answer here and see both sides. Just sharing my view/logic on it. ETA: I think StearnsFTW just above this nails my take on Yelich/Baez well said.
  14. Topper's first line is an interesting way of looking at it, I haven't seen it framed that way before. For me though, I see no clarification in that saying to any team, your team, winning team. I simply see the phrase the most valuable player. So that's just how simply I look at it. And I don't see the logic in punishing a player for having worse teammates than someone else and/or being on a team geographically unlucky that year regarding who his team is up against in the division. I'd view team records/playoffs as the tie breaker if you just can't make a decision, and not so much with the logic that he deserves because his team won but because he played in more intense/pressure situations and still produced the same ballpark stats as opposed to playing with no pressure and in more meaningless games when it might have been slightly easier to accrue the stats.
  15. I know it's all semantics but Valuable really shouldn't matter what team you're on. You're still valuable if you're team only wins 78 times. If the award said most outstanding player on a winning team, or most valuable player on a winning team then this thinking would make sense. But it's just people making up their own definition Valuable that isn't there. For example, if you've ever seen the movie the Scout. Basically a struggling scout finds the best player in the world and he can basically pitch a perfect game every time and hit a HR almost every at bat. If that guy was playing on this year's Orioles he'd still be the most valuable player in the league to take them from 42 wins to 75 or whatever it would be. This is assuming he can only pitch a normal 1/5 of the games and that eventually teams are just going to walk him. Mookie Betts taking his team to 108 wins instead of 103 isn't more valuable. That's my two cents. Winning team is a tie breaker if you can't decide to me, otherwise the best player is the most valuable.
  16. Of course, we're making best guesses here. Sorry if it came off more than that. That would be my guess right now based off that info last night. we'll see, hopefully we don't really even need to find out. And of course even if trust is lacking in Anderson it doesn't necessarily mean they trust Woodruff more than him.
  17. I'd have my money on Woodruff before Chase in a need for a longer innings guy while still in a close game. Didn't management show us last night their comfort level with Chase right now?
  18. And let him pitch so long...it was a strange game. Check out Peralta's splits. vs RHB he's a .111/209 with 396 OPS. Seems like it was a very strategic move for this reason vs an all righty lineup other than one guy. Might have showed their hand for the WC though. Although by then Wong might be back, maybe they could play Carpenter at 3B to get Adams in. I don't recall how much Carpenter ha played off first this year, but in the past he's been versatile.
  19. I was hoping he'd go a few innings against the Cards' many RHB's today. I don't think there's any excuse for having a pitcher bat at this time of year, as rested as they are, when the Brewers' starters aren't any better than the long relievers anyway. So they might need a long reliever early. Gonzalez will obviously get more batters than Jennings did, but I see no reason he should bat unless maybe there's 2 outs and nobody on. Look how Peralta batted yesterday and then the next guy got a hit with 2 outs and nobody on. Maybe someone could have been on base when Cain got a hit, giving Yelich and Aguilar both a chance to bat with runners on. Then Peralta gave up a run in the bottom of the inning anyway. I don't think I agree with the not let Gio bat aspects, assuming a normal 0-2 runs giving up by then. Basic reasoning being they used a lot of BP guys last night so I just think they're hoping for some length out of Gio tonight to ease that load. CC said as much after the game. If he's struggling, tons of balls, whatever where you think he just doesn't have it. Sure have an early hok and hope for better from Woodruff or Anderson. But I think they're hoping for 5-6 from Gio here to lighten the load on the pen after last night.
  20. About the only way I'll be able to afford World Series tickets. For the WS games at Wrigley because it will be your fault if the team loses in the NLDS in this scenario
  21. Again, if that had ever been factored into the decision in previous years I'd get it more. But it seems like finding a way to justify giving it to Baez when normally it wouldn't really even be that close of a call. for example, the top 3 in NL voting last year were Stanton, Votto, goldschmidt. While Arenado, one of the best 3B defensive players ever came in 4th. Year before had Bryant and Murphy top 2, can't imagine Murphy is rated anything more than blah on D but I don't know.
  22. I phrased it that way because Braun was hurt for a good portion again this year and likely played darn near as much as he could as it was. Yes, didn't think to include Phillips, just forgot, but yea that's not much of a good option either with how he's hit so point is kind of the same. Also, forgot to include more Thames in OF but again he's been hurt and bad too. So point is kind of the same, huge drop off after Yelich.
  23. Yea I don't think I'd say the Cubs haven't won extra games due to Baez. But in this context, his replacements would be former AS Russell and Zobrist having a great year. For much of this year Yelich's replacement would have been Broxton/Perez or Santana who fell apart. so I think it would be accurate that he's more valuable in the sense we don't have good replacements. But I don't think it's really right or fair to use team depth behind him as a negative.
  24. True championship contending teams don't lose to the Pirates, they're the Pirates !!
  25. I don't know about you guys, but I know I'd feel more comfortable with Woodruff these days than Anderson. Hopefully 4-5 from Gio, 2 from Woodruff and then you're into the backend. Let's just have a great night from the offense and not sweat it, how about that.
