  1. Yea our 2015 could probably rest players until the championship game with this competition. obviously joking, but compare to that year when we had to go through UNC, AZ, Kentucky, then Duke.
  2. From what I could find online. In 14 they were 8 mil under, then 10 mil under in 15 and 16. Currently 23 mil under. That's one starting player on D they could afford each year. Obviously have some more people to sign this year but considering no big name players are left i don't see how they spend all 23. Moreover, they didn't use that space to re-configure Rodgers contract and dump him a bunch of extra pay in those years in order for him to take less later on in kind of a gentlemen's agreement.
  3. What was that old promo/ad from 10-15 years ago when the team was awful, it was the manager at the time giving some speech about how "we got the fighters, we got the scrappers..."? We should just re-use that one for this squad. Then next year we can roll out the Turning Up the Heat promos again. Barring injury though I think they will be better than most think. Seems like the type of team that should do a lot of little things right (other than dumb baserunning outs) to be in most games and win more than they should. Very similar to last year actually before the trades at the end. I suppose a key difference last year to this is the bullpen was set last year with more or less proven guys at the end of it. Then we traded them all so kind of starting fresh this year.
  4. Yea generally speaking I'm fine building through the draft but Rodgers isn't getting any younger, at some point we have to go for it. No need to be sitting 10+ mil under the cap again. The defensive backs were so beyond awful last year that I would have preferred stabilizing it with 1 proven guy at least. instead we're banking on rebounds from two guys who were awful along with rookies. So my guess is not long into the season we'll be relying on winning shootouts again and complaining how the D is wasting another year of Rodgers prime.
  5. I think UCONN would be the right team to use as an example. 3 titles in 20ish years but several years of blahness and not even making the tourney. As much as I like the consistency. I'd trade it for a title. Losing that Duke game really was rough and getting so close made me appreciate how awesome it would've been to win. If we won I'd have been fine with losing early the next few years and maybe not making the tourney say next year when we lose so much. 9 point lead with 12 mins to go, probably the closest we'll get to a title in either sport.
  6. So I'm not huge in following NFL FA and draft, somewhat out of bitterness about how much ESPN jams it down our throats, but am I correct in thinking that we've done nothing to fix the secondary beyond bring House back and I assume all high end guys are signed by now? So we're banking on whoever we draft and Rollins/Randall improving in spite of their awfulness last year?
  7. One would at least think Marq making the tourney and just generally being a solid team this year helped insure Woj is there a while. That had to be a concern in the back of their mind. Say they wouldn't have made it this year and next, Woj could've easily been out. At least getting this appearance buys him some time. So that's a plus for Marquette.
  8. Somewhat correct from what the recruitment reporters say. Story is Gard wanted him and thought he was capable of contributing at the B1G level, Bo wasn't sure. But either way they were upfront with the family that they only had one scholarship and desperately needed a PG. They hoped a spot opened (Dearring did eventually leave, but too late) but couldn't guarantee it. So it was probably best they operated accordingly, which the family did. Some say family is bitter, others say they appreciated the upfront-ness about it instead of jerking them around or lying like many schools do, who knows. I also think he decided fairly early to secure his spot at Marq, who knows if he waited maybe they would've pushed Dearing out earlier. Kind of a bit of bad timing from many spots combined with bad recruiting of Hill/Dearing. So it seems they did recruit him and had regular contact, just couldn't get him a spot. Who knows if the family is bitter, but it's still a huge advantage to have the bro at Marquette and a negative for UW to convince him to compete against his bro. Most recruit-nicks say older Hauser would've went UW if they could've took him, but who knows. Really too bad as both kids seem great fits for our system. I have a bad feeling he ends up at MSU or UVA. I'd rather him at UVA than Marq or MSU. MSU would probably be my most disliked choice. But can't blame that, Izzo is a great coach and puts tons of players into the Association.
  9. UW didn't have a spot for the older Hauser, going to end up biting us. We essentially chose guys like Hill and Dearring over banking a scholarship to balance the classes instead of only have 1 in that class. Or you could say we chose taking all 3 of Thomas, Illikanen, AVV but I don't know how the timing went down on all that... He's a perfect fit for our system and to go with the other committed players. Hopefully he sees that and the winning they could do together. But it's up to him on what he values and I don't blame anyone for their choice.
  10. Yea the true blue bloods of Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas will always be in a separate class due to their history and mass recruiting advantage because of it. We're right there in the next tier with the AZ, MSU, UCLA, Nova, FL type programs. I'm not saying I predict us to win the regional. But no team scares me in the sense that I feel we're a large underdog. Basically I view all 3 teams as coinflip games for us and expect to be in the game with a few mins left, at which point anything can happen. Playing a Duke, UNC, Kansas etc I would not have said that. For Baylor, I watched them more this weekend than the year and seems like they still play a lot of zone, which in recent years we've done very well against and Nigel thrives against. Including the blowout we laid on them in the tourney a couple years ago. Seems like they have at least one or two guys with length that could be a problem for Happ though. Still, a game vs Baylor for the FF is about as good of a realistic matchup you could ask for. They struggled late this year too and have been a tourney choker for years now with questionable coaching in the process.
  11. If the Bucks are not going to be contending for the next two years they should just trade Giannis or Middleton this off season. With one more good piece added to the current team you are looking at the 3rd best team in the East. If the question is how do you get better, the answer will never be trading Giannis. Yea I have no idea where that's coming from. I wasn't saying we shouldn't be trying to win. I'm saying Lebron will still be Lebron for at least a couple more years and GSW basically has a juggernaut for a couple more years. We should be trying to win next year but should also be planning for our true championship team to be 2020, so we should shoot for guys in their mid 20s, not 30s. And yea I get teh concern with Favors. Definitely a risk and why I'd call it buying low. Say we trade and he does well next year, then you're stuck paying a ton. If you trade this offseason maybe you can way cheaper and then hope he has 4 years left in him(since that's how long the deal would be), I think he's only 25 or 26 so plenty young but the injuries this year are cause for concern. If you're giving up a ton to get him and pay him a huge deal, I'd probably hold off. I'm looking at finding a deal on him since his game, when healthy, would be a great fit at the 5 for us.
  12. I'd love to buy low on Favors and try to lock him up to a reasonable extension after trading for him,if that's allowed in the CBA anyway, rather than letting him get to FA where the numbers might be stupid if he has a good season next year. Don't see Hill happening, just spent money on a fit PG last year that's been blah, also have Brogdon there for depth. I like Hill too, but would you rather have Hill in the 25-30 mil range or just keep Snell at 10-12 and spend that money elsewhere, like on a Favors. Plus Hill's age will have him declining right at our title window that starts 3ish years from now.
  13. Supposedly Hill turned down a 3/75 deal after the deadline, must be hoping to get the 4th year. Crazy that he'd turn that down but just shows how much he's looking for this offseason. Can't blame him I suppose, not like he's made a ton in his career and he's like 30 now, so this is his last big payday. Favors having an injury plagued year could help keep his price down but I think he's signed through next year so you'd have to trade for him. Then if he's healthy all next year his price will skyrocket too.
  14. Good question. To me it comes down to lead ballhandler PG who can run PnR and attack the hoop while being able to shoot well, something like a Lillard type offensively, or a defensive rim running C like Jordan or prime Tyson Chandler. I guess I go with the PG because I think I can find that type of C more easily and cheaply this offseason than I can the PG. Though I acknowledge the C would help the team more right now, so I'm factoring future and future roster moves a little.
  15. Monroe has been the lest of their problems this year. But yea I was in the camp of you'll always be able to trade him, so I was wrong there. Shocked they couldn't, well maybe they could but had delusions of the playoffs in their head because of the 3 wins before the deadline. Either way, you aren't out anything by having signed him. He played hard and tried in his two years here. I still fear that his descent play this year will lead to him opting out and us giving him a 4 year deal for like 60 mil.
  16. Kidd has to go doesn't he? I'd be fine with right now, but at least at the end of the season. Halfcourt offense is terrible. Defensive system is terrible.
  17. I agree it is too long for proven MLB position players in that they could do everything needed in a shorter time if the guys actually played. But every year you hear about slow starts due to rust, need to get in rhythm, etc. Well, how about take some ABs in spring training instead just one per game or skipping games to go golfing? We know guys are in shape now so don't need the time for all that like 50 years ago. In short, I'd be all for shortening it up but think the actual MLB players should get more PT/ABs in. Pitchers on the other hand, I could see why they need the time to stretch out. And I see how minor leaguers benefit from more time with coaches. So it's no easy to shorten up as many guys do benefit from more time. I'd probably leave as is for length, but try to have my MLB ready hitters get more real ABs in. I've been saying it for a few years with the Packers too with their slow starts. I know we can't risk injury in preseason and just got killed by Jordy's injury. But it seems every year it takes several games for the passing offense to get in rhythm, how about actually play a bit in preseason together. It's not like QBs can really even get hit anymore and Rodgers is smart enough to just go down than risk it.
  18. Forgot about Garza as an old guy, I expect nothing from him. Guys like Guerra, Peralta, Nelson are still controlled for several years. So sure they're not 23ish but you still have them for several years and Peralta/Nelson are still relatively young. Sure it's riskier as they could come back down or get hurt, but if you get a few years of good play from them you'll trade them for a heck of a lot more down the line than you will when they've essentially had 3 months of good play. Plus you'd have gotten the benefit of their good play. Guerra is such a weird situation, but due to his length of control how advantageous would it be for a small market contender to have a bargain high quality starter like him when they're at contention point? Would be the equivalent of how CHC lucked out with Arrieta and Hendricks.
  19. I'd lean towards #3. It's not like you'd be winning on the backs of old vets since we only have one on the roster. If you win with youth players playing, I mean, that's the dream isn't it? I wouldn't do any short term trades trying to win now though. Something like Quintana is intriguing though due to the length of his control so he could be a piece of the next real winning title contending team, but i would imagine his price would be very steep and I'd rather not give away many long term assets since even if they sneak into the playoffs you still have next to no shot vs CHC and LAD and SF.
  20. Yup, this is exactly what the Bucks do. Justify them all by saying that's the market value and others are getting. Yea, they're getting it from crappy teams. Good teams don't overpay for backups. Money has to go to the difference makers and the rest needs to be spent efficiently. IMO we have to think positive on Middleton as still being capable of being the #3 man on a title team. Need to save our money for the #2 guy somehow, trade and resign, just sign a FA, draft and resign, etc. Instead we'll below our load on Snell and overpay someone else's currently underpaid C. Who then loses his value once he's making 15 mil per year. I'd be holding out that last big salary slot for a real difference maker at PG. I like Brogdon as much as everyone else but might be better off with him (as a title contender) as the jack of all trades backup. Or in the Patrick Beverly type mold next to good PG, assuming we don't re-sign Snell. I just long to see Giannis as a deadly roll man playing PnR with a big threat at PG. Giannis would be devastating in that role. He's unstoppable once he gets a crease in the paint.
  21. Snell has been perfectly fine, one of the best 3pt shooters in the league since the new year, over 50%. Who knows what kind of stupid offer he gets this offseason, but his game has been fine and a clear quality rotation piece. I just hope we don't drop 60 mil on him.
  22. Yea that's a very good theory, being that he got started in MLB at a bit older age it pushes him back. Sticking point could easily be that we want those post arby years as options and he wants them guaranteed to accept moving his real FA back to age 32.
  23. Jennings could clearly play Terry's minutes and Middleton's when he sits back to backs. But what's the point? I'd rather play Vaughn and see how he does, they're not winning anything this year anyway.
  24. Yea if it was only through the arby years I can't believe he didn't take it.
  25. Yup, my apologies for overspeaking a bit. I hadn't looked totally into how many arby years he had left etc, and shouldn't have even spoken specifics about years. What I was really getting at is the total dollars aspect of it to be closer to 40 so it is 'set for life' type security. Even if that means buying out another year or two of FA for him. I'm sure you're right in the specific of the arby amounts and if that math comes out to low 20s then it's not a lowball offer per se. But if I'm him I'd maybe add on another year or two to get that total guaranteed $ up since 20 mil post tax/agent isn't quite live like a truly rich person for the next 50-60 years money. I think you know what I'm getting at.
