  1. Right, I'd actually prefer Kershaw and if not him then Urias, but it's not happening.
  2. MCW trade makes perfect sense and I view it as basically fair, maybe they could toss us a 2nd rounder but really it's close enough. There was clearly no market for MCW and we needed a wing who can shoot much more than we needed MCW. And Snell could actually be a guy who sticks here for a while as a backup wing after Middleton is back. They were lacking at that spot anyway, and he hopefully realizes he's just a backup without unrealistic salary expectations when that time comes. Yes, the Beasley trade is the one that's unbalancing the roster at this point. But with Giannis handling PG for 30 minutes per game you should be fine at PG with Delly and Bogdon to take the remaining 18 mins. Supposedly that trade was in the works before the Middleton injury, maybe they had already agreed and didn't want to go back on their word but this would certainly be an extenuating circumstance where Houston should've understood.
  3. I finished first in regular season but with a little luck schedule wise so I'd consider myselft 2nd best team going into the playoffs. got a bye in week 1 then played what was probably the 3rd best team throughout the season. it's a category league and I believe I ended up losing 9-7 due to losing Rs by 1 and RBI by 2 or 3. I have Josh Donaldson and he missed 4 or 5 games that week due to an unexpected injury. Probably would've been enough tilt it my way if he'd just missed one game, but whatever, everyone can come up with what ifs like that. I go on to win comfortably in the 3rd place game to get my buyin back. Would've played the best team and would've won 15-1, his team just laid a complete egg in the championship.
  4. Also, I'm sure on $1 hot dog day all other food sales take a huge hit as everyone just buys hot dogs. I generally think a reduction of $1-2 on most products would help them increase sales enough to cover the loss in margin but as someone else said they have nerds running all these numbers and they disagree. They actually sent out a survey about exactly this a couple weeks ago, having you compare prices and how long of a walk for certain products and picking between 3 options. I almost always picked the cheapest one as long as it was something I liked.
  5. My computer isn't letting me look at the drawings so I'm working on limited info. But am I crazy to think this shouldn't cost nearly the amount of money they're saying?
  6. If they get Bellinger back from the Dodgers that addresses it right there assuming he eventually makes it along with one of the several lefty OFs in the systems.
  7. Also relevant here is the team record. vs RHP: 43-70 vs LHP: 30-19
  8. All big markets except for the Indians and they just won at basketball and that was kind of annoying. Really no one to root for here so my rooting interest goes: No cubs, No Sawx, and then I guess I root for TX due to the ex-Brewers. I suppose I wouldn't hate Nationals because of all the hate Harper gets and it would eliminate the Cubs. I wouldn't mind seeing Kershaw finally doing well in the playoffs and them winning but it's just tough to root for a huge market team with that payroll. Prediction is Texas over Nationals but that's nothing more than a guess.
  9. Looking at the standings though you would have had to lose 5 more games to move up more than 1 spot. In an ideal world we would have lost like 7 more games but I'll take the quality play from guys like Broxton, Villar, Santana and good improvement from guys like Peralta and Anderson at the end vs picking up a few more draft spots.
  10. That's where I differ. Every major league season is precious. Purposely not putting your team into position to improve (when the path is so obvious and not detrimental to long range goals) hurts in the long run. The young players on this team need to learn how to play in pressure situations. I'd go out and get a LH hitting OF to spell Braun and be in soft platoon with Santana who hit just .231/.318/.408 vs. RHP as opposed to .312/.404/.532 vs. LHP. It's a glaring need that won't go away in 2018 either unless it's addressed. Nieuwenhuis just isn't quite up to that role. Neither was Flores, but the fact that both were tried showed they recognize that they needed a balance regardless of where they are in rebuild process. I'd argue that the way to improve your team is to play a person with the upside to improve rather than a Scooter or Kirk type getting that person's ABs just because they're lefty. You even said, the young guys need to be put in pressure situations, that means playing them rather than giving their ABs to people who have no place in our long term future just to get a lefty in there. When it comes to backups though, yes I'd factor that in. I'd prefer the backup OF to be lefty if possible but I wouldn't let it be the deciding factor on keeping a Kirk if you have a youthful person who might have a shot to be here a while. I have no beef with Scooter, good guy to have had but his being limited to only 2B hurts his chances here. But who knows, he can still be considered the 'backup' at all 3 IF spots because the other two guys can play anywhere. So he can come in at 2B and the other guys move.
  11. This has been talked about before but I don't see any reason to worry about RH vs LH next year. That is the type of thing you worry about when contending, not now. You don't play Scooter, who we know is what he is, over someone with some kind of potential just because we need a lefty. I might factor it into future targets when you're acquiring people but the daily balance of the lineup to me is irrelevant.
  12. I did not know that and that is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard about replay. You'd think MLB replay was run by the government it is so inept. The TV guys and Ueck talked a bit yesterday about how they need to tweak replay. In 2016 we have to have it but there has to be a way to improve it. I don't think have the manager stand there for a minute while his guys review it is a good system at all. I simply don't see why every league doesn't do the same as college football. HAve a guy watching the game and whenever he needs a couple seconds extra he can ping the home plate ump to give a second. If he watches it 4-5 times and it's not clear, move on. Should take under 30 seconds each time and it will eliminate this standing around looking at each other stuff.
  13. If Braun isn't traded and manages to stay healthy again most of next season it's really not outlandish at all to think they can be .500ish. RF/CF should be massive upgrades vs what they got this year, making up for a huge downgrade at C and some regression from Villar/Carter so the offense is still respectable and surprisingly deep. The big question as always with the Brewers is pitching but guys like Nelson, Anderson, Davies, Guerra, Peralta should at least all be serviceable #3-5 type guys next year. You're not winning anything serious with those guys but assuming health from them they can all be expected to be mediocre/ok type which could lead to a mediocre season where they're surprisingly competitive. I'm all-in on the rebuild but I also appreciate being entertained and watching good baseball throughout a long season, especially when spending thousands on going to games. So I guess I'm just saying it will be a good rebuild if the worst is behind us already and we only really had to sit through one really horrible season (2015) and are already starting to project upward. Obviously, I know a little optimistic thinking on Braun not being traded/healthy and on the pitchers all being OK after such poor overall seasons from guys like Nelson, Peralta, Anderson but I think you know what I mean. It's really not that crazy to think the bottom has already happened.
  14. If anything it proves that older higher priced mediocre veterans often don't outperform young players getting their shot.
  15. Absolutely great post by Monty. completely nailed it.
  16. Fair point. I guess what I mean is that it's part of the risk that we all know we're taking and I accept that risk. I think we all knew the positives that could come, just generally entertaining us the next 2ish years while team is blah, and the chance that he continues to hit for all the years of the contract and contribute while the team starts to win again. Probably won't be hitting 320 or anything by the end but 280 plus with 25ish homers is still a solid player. The risk is that he could get hurt or have a quick decline and then we have a year or two of a bad contract. Just saying that I accept that risk if no one is willing to give us legit prospects because we have no other salary.
  17. And with all that you're still missing top end starting pitching which is the difference in getting from low 70s to legit contender.
  18. I don't recall anyone have any beef with him before the scandal, that's a bit revisionist history. The guy did nothing but come up and mash and get huge hits for us. Only thing I could think of people making fun of was his cheesy Kwik Trip ads. Puig's hitting since he came up besides being such a small sample is heavily skewed to only facing lefties. Doesn't Braun hit like .690 vs lefties? This argument has gone on for weeks now and it's still the same no matter how much arguing there is. If you get good legit pitching prospects back, then do it. If they expect you to just give them Braun for nothing as a salary dump just to help the big city Dodgers then say no and just let him play it out here. Even if the last year or so he's not that good or if he gets hurt it's not huge because we have no other salary.
  19. I hope if we get Puig back that it is only with the hope of playing him a half season and flipping at the deadline when a guy like Brinson is ready to come up. I'd prefer not to have anything to do with the guy. He has not been good at baseball in over 2 years, when does that matter more than the hype around him? I'm hoping Puig's value in the trade is only as salary coming back and that us and LAD aren't putting any value on him since they basically kicked him right off the team this year. If we could offload his salary right away to someone else for no return other than an Adam Lind type lottery ticket I'd be perfectly fine with him never playing a game here.
  20. True, I get your point. We might have 5 guys in Nelson, Davies, Peralta, Guerra, Anderson who you'd prefer over him. But after that comes the young guys who you'd kind of prefer to have their innings down or in the case of a Hader, not to come up until later in the year to save service time. So at that point Garza is your 6th guy and obviously injuries to pitchers is very very common. So I'd have no problem starting Garza at the beginning of the year and hoping he regains more value to trade for a minor leaguer who might have a chance. In that situation I'd probably have Anderson as the odd man out at the beginning if everyone is healthy, but I'd bet money someone is hurt in spring training (actually most likely that would be Garza) Notice, I said I wouldn't have a problem with it. Of course if someone gives you what you want you should just pull the trigger and put the money to use elsewhere. But if you're eating most of his salary and still not getting anything back (basically a deal you hate), then you might as well keep him and have him eat up 80-100 innings and hopefully trade later since we don't really need to save money.
  21. Been saying that for years. It's completely swept under the rug for him and he's going to walk into the HOF no questions asked. And he failed that test back when people were using real steroids, not the supplements now. He was a dud early in his career and gets cut, then gets paired up with Manny and all of a sudden he's good. Then a few years back he fell off the cliff and couldn't hit for about 2 years, then all of a sudden gets it back at age 37ish. I mean, this guy would be the most obvious example someone could use. Another guy I think who will walk into the HOF is Pudge Rodriguez. Bartolo Colon is another example of a known PED guy that everyone loves. Plus he has lots of other shady stuff in his background. Personally, I don't care about PEDs. I'm just pointing out the media hypocrisy of who to blow up (Braun, Arod) and who they ignore.
  22. If more than 3 pan out to be above average OFs we'll have a good problem on our hands. Chances are that just won't be the case. Some will get hurt, some won't perform. That will sort most of it out along with the first batch (Santana, Broxton, etc) moving towards FA as the next batch are arriving.
  23. With years and years of being a poor defensive team I would think their plan is that all these CF types will spread out and cover all 3 spots and they'll have a good defensive outfield. As of now we've spent most of this year playing guys like Kirk and Flores so it's nothing to worry about just yet. If Broxton keeps it up and Brinson keeps killing it and comes up next year you deal with it then. A spot could easily be opened with a Braun trade and if not I'm hoping Santana is putting in some time at 1B in case of a Carter trade at the deadline. That would free up another spot. Long story, it'll sort it all out over time. There won't be a a potential backlog for several years. [sarcasm]Now, most importantly, how would Khris Davis fit in if he was still here?[/sarcasm]
  24. 12 games to go in the season and we're still technically alive for the playoffs. Who would've thought that at the beginning of the year. This from their ticket holder emails today: "A stretch of 17 games over 17 days -- 14 of which are on the road -- is a daunting task at any point, but when you add the fact that all 17 games are against divisional opponents, most of whom are battling for a spot in October, you are looking at an especially challenging stretch. Yet, after going into Wrigley Field and taking three of four games from the team with the best record in baseball, the Brewers have emerged from that formidable stretch with a record of 11-6."
  25. Good points and nothing you just said is wrong. But I would argue the rebuild was still the right move on account of not having legit starting pitching (which is what you need to really win big) and that the Cubs/Cards/Pirates are currently so good. As you said we could've continued to trot out a .500ish team since the O was more than adequate and maybe gotten lucky and snagged a WC in the next 3 years. But deep down you knew you had no shot at a title, so might as well go this route and hopefully have a really good team 4 years from now when the Cubs systems hopefully starts to run dry and maybe they run into cap/money problems. Basically your path was the Herb Kohl route for the Bucks that all fans grew to hate.
