  1. Pretty much, at some point we can only flail our arms to judge things in the end. Even if the player was traded elsewhere at the deadline, it is impossible know what it would have taken had we made the trade. We can compare prospect values and Top 30 lists, but that is very far from an exact science. Heck, Gasser could become an All Star and it could unknowingly still be a terrible trade compared to what else Stearns was offered. We rarely get to see what other teams offered unless it’s an absolute huge player being traded. I remember most thinking the Lucroy trade to the Indians as being an absolute haul and he vetoed it. Turns out the entire package was total garbage.
  2. They look normal to me.
  3. Mets +180 point differential / Padres +45 ----- Mets get ousted LA Dodgers +334 point / Padres +45 ---- Dodgers get ousted Yankees +240 / Indians +64 ---- Yankees on doorstep of losing series Braves +180 / Phillies +62 -----Braves get ousted What is your point? That having no chance because the other team is better on paper only applies to us? Astros are the only team so far that actually went out and dominated the opponent they were vastly better than on paper.
  4. Graham Mertz is not good, he is very far from it. This is arguably the best year of Mertz and I don’t know how far back I’d have to go to find a QB I would want less (at their best) than 2022 Mertz. Considering his ranking coming to Madison, his performance is pathetic and the fact he is so bad so often at such basic things is amazing. It is time for the Badgers to start recruiting, actually developing, and actually utilizing their QBs better. They are way too respectable of a program to be trotting out below average guys that barely eclipse 100 yards passing on 25 passes. Averaging 5.5 yards on a pass, come on man. Who is in charge of QB recruiting at Wisconsin? Mertz isn’t good and the next up? Their backups are usually straight garbage you wouldn’t pay to watch. I just don’t get it.
  5. Must be rigged. I was told all September there was no point in being the last wild card team. Our team would be garbage and would not go anywhere anyway. That must only apply to us. Good thing the Phillies don’t have that mindset.
  6. Would Hader have struggled that long had he just stayed here? I think probably not. Also, I think most people agree the Brewers played poorly (as a team) to some degree due to that trade happening. On paper and reality likely aren’t as simple as that exercise is, thus why I didn’t partake in it. Not to mention one can easily go into retrospect and make the perfect set of moves to prove a point. It’s going to depend on your opinion of some of the non statistical effects of those moves in a lot of ways.
  7. No, I do not believe Stearns really tried to make the team better. Tread water at best. If you think they really made a serious effort to better the team, well, that’s your opinion. Clearly Stearns doesn’t think it’s a great time to compete with this core. He is probably waiting for us to have two aces and a few NL Relievers of the year on the team. We need that championship pitching we have all been waiting for. Oh wait….never mind.
  8. If our GM actually tried to make his division leading team better at the deadline Burnes probably wouldn’t have pitched 10/5. We would have clinched days in advance.
  9. I think I would be more concerned about the expanded Big Ten and impending loss of the cupcake walk of the Big Ten West as infinitely more concerning to the Badgers success than the coach or even recruiting. The Badgers success the past decade really has more to do with an easy schedule that often lacks Ohio State and Penn State. They have also tended to miss out on Michigan when they have a really good team too. It is easy to consistently win 8+ games and many times 10+ games with the schedule they are so often dealt. That isn't to say they haven't had really good teams, just that they really benefit from having a way easier schedule than say Michigan State has over and over.
  10. Depends how much you value a postseason appearance. This trade single handedly blew a postseason spot. Had it not been done I think most everyone can accept that the Brewers likely were in the postseason. Maybe not as the division winner, but certainly as a wild card. Possible they still missed it, sure, we can't exactly go back and find out....but logically, they would have made it with Hader on the team. Stearns understands that they really blew it making this trade and falsely believing the team would still be fine. It just was not a good trade. Could we get a bit lucky and Gasser turn into Brandon Woodruff, maybe...but it is going to take a lot for it to offset what a postseason appearance would have meant and whatever Hader would have garnered in the offseason or next deadline. Because let's not forget, keeping Hader didn't mean we would never get anything. We probably would have gotten a similar deal in the offseason or next July. As good? Maybe not on paper...but I doubt it would have been a bunch of random lottery tickets. I am not sure Gasser becoming a 3/4 starter is really going to make it worth it. Missing the postseason after making this trade is a big black eye and a huge value lost. Gasser is a decent prospect, but hardly something difficult to find. We could have taken all the revenue from a wild card postseason appearance and bought a couple team's competitive balance picks. That would have been better than Gasser, in my opinion.
  11. Don't think it tanked his trade value at all. 7 weeks isn't going to tank your trade value...especially when he was bonkers productive prior to that in 2021 and had years of being the best reliever in the game. I think we just saw why we had held onto Hader all those deadlines/offseasons of shopping him. Teams just aren't backing up a dump truck to rent a reliever for a year and two months these days. He just never was going to command blue chip prospects. Stearns has been willing to trade Hader for elite prospects for years...the offers never came.
  12. Does it have to play second fiddle though? Fully electric cars are arguably cheaper due to being cheaper than buying gas and the lower cost to maintain. The cost of the vehicles and their respective batteries should continue to go down...though frocing them to be made in the U.S. might make that more difficult. It just is woefully inconvenient at this point for most people. I could see that be fixed enough where electric vehicles could push for a market share around 50%. Solar energy seems like a cheaper alternative even in more northern climates. I ran the numbers and even for me I think I could save thousands over 20-30 years. My house and bill just aren't big enough for the risks involved. The companies installing and making the products are just so young at this point there is a ton of risk if either of those entities go out of business and you have problems. A 20-year warranty isn't much if the business is gone in 5 years. Reputable companies and higher quality/efficient products should continue to strengthen the solar sector though. 15 years from now I could see solar being a big player in the market. If families start adding 1-2 fully electric vehicles it will make their energy bill a lot bigger and solar might actually push their bill high enough to consider solar.
  13. Well they just fired their football coach that recently won coach of the year two years in a row (only guy to do it this century) and was in the Rose Bowl a few years back...soooo. I think the Badgers potential is way better than Gard has mustered...but then again, I guess it doesn't matter to me and isn't football related at the end of the day.
  14. I mean, you’re likely right, but as I said before…any Brewers team will be the short end of the stick going into October. Their odds were likely no better or worse than any other year they have made the postseason. If I was picking, last years team was the best one for a World Series run on paper and it had no better success than any other year.
  15. Make sure to go back and tell that to the the 2006 Cardinals. Maybe the 2011 Cardinals too. I’d notify the Phillies/Padres/Indians that they might as well just stop playing. They had similar results this year and are WAY worse than the other remaining teams. Their seasons need to end. When the roster is set after Spring Training can you use your crystal ball to tell me if they have any chance or not? I don’t really want to waste my time following 162 games for nothing.
  16. I think the biggest problem was the replacements. He tried to take some ugly looking pieces and hope past results or their analytics would prove out to be better in August/September. They simply didn’t…they were about as bad as realistically possible. I mean one of the guys was injured when we traded for him and ended up never throwing a pitch for us. Kind of a fail by the medical staff on that too. Did the team respond poorly from a mental standpoint, yah, but is it that shocking? Trading him was bad, but Stearns didn’t make any trade for a notable impact player the entire deadline in response. From a fan and player standpoint we acted like a team that was under .500 but still close enough we didn’t want to totally blow it up. We arguably got worse at the deadline with a division lead? I could go through the last 10 years and I’d be hard pressed to find a team that was in a playoff spot that intentionally made themselves worse. Whether it was right or wrong at the time or in retrospect, it just was a really garbage feeling.
  17. With Woodruff/Burnes and Hader/Williams they most certainly could have gone far. Brewers could have marched to a NLCS with garbage batting performances. Would they get through a 7 game series with poor batting? Probably not, but they can get hot at any time for no good reason. They had World Series quality pitching. Those aces and really good back end bullpen guys can win games against anyone. Was it likely? No, but it never is or will be for the Brewers…so if you want to look at it that way they should blow up the entire team this off-season. Next years team will most certainly be no brighter on paper barring one crazy off-season. The trade ended up terrible. Even the guy who made the trade can accept that.
  18. I mean, there really isn't much to argue about. Even Stearns admitted he kind of blew it. Reality is, it was a mistake...and ruined the season. Anyone would go back and trade those prospects for a postseason appearance. I don't think judging it in retrospect is totally unreasonable because at the time this really wasn't a shocking potential outcome. It isn't like the Marlins trading Yelich and you would've never seen it coming. I thought Stearns would do enough to offset the loss during the regular season and didn't expect the team to get that down about it. However, if I was picking a second most likely option...this was definitely it and it was about 50/50 how it would go. Stearns was hoping to tread water while adding some prospects. Instead, he rammed the titanic straight into an iceberg to sink the entire season. Is what it is. All we can do now is hope the prospects become useful members of a winning team down the road.
  19. Logan Brown is transferring....but he was actually dismissed due to an internal incident first. The rumor is he struck a teammate at practice.
  20. Stearns dragged himself in the mud pretty good at the end of year press conference. Pretty much to the point admitting he kind of regretted the trade. He expected more out of the replacements in the pen and didn't expect the team to respond so poorly after the trade. It cratered the season. In retrospect I think Stearns wishes he had just held onto Hader till the end of the year. Wouldn't have cratered the morale and the bullpen would have been better off...likely in the playoffs. He then could have traded Hader in the offseason where he would have had an easier time replacing him and the team would have gotten over it by the start of the season. The lesser return probably would have been worth actually making the postseason this year and not ticked the fanbase off so much. Trading Hader ticked people off as is, then missing the playoffs as the bullpen constantly blew games, just a disaster. They were practically begging people to come to the ballpark by the time the end of the season rolled around.
  21. First you have to make alternative energy to be the cheaper option and convenient. Let's be honest, no one cares about helping the environment if it isn't saving them money...especially on expensive purchases. Spending money (extra than you would otherwise) to help the planet is a niche market. That or to have a status symbol, like a Tesla. I own a plug-in hybrid because it gives me 45mpg to work and 999mpg for most everything else. Whether or not it helps the environment is kind of just a bonus if it does that. I don't think EV/Hybrids/PHEVs are that expensive, but they are to someone who is considered true middle class or lower. Most of these vehicles are priced up around what a limited trim is. Most manufacturers aren't releasing true base models with hybrid+ capabilities. Of course, now that they fudged the tax credits that really just makes them pretty crappy priced across the board.
  22. Graham Mertz only performing in games against garbage opponents that a 50 year old drunk fan could lead them to a win is completely meaningless. He could at least be decent against the Purdue/Minn/Iowa of the world to be acceptable. Certainly still below the hype, but at least match the performance/success of the noodle arms before you the last decade. Which, he will get the chance to do.
