    So? If he doesn't feel like the offer is high enough he isn't going to take it. You don't think our offer has been matched or close to it by a glamour city? Except the fact he hasn't signed with a glamour city either.

    Phillips over Villar? Yes Phillips over Sogard/Perez platoon? No Id take Eric Sogard over Phillips straight up, no platoon. Perez=Phillips=Sogard in my opinion. I don't think I ever said I loved Villar(I actually like im to bounceback to a solid bat). It is more the fact Brandon Phillips is washed up garbage that is only going to get worse. Living in the past with the gold glove talk.

    Wouldn't this be what it is? Spot starting is maybe getting a game here or there...maybe two in a row. Then that not happening often. Starting two straight month is a full time starting gig. We did not make these aggressive moves to in the end have Suter starting that many games. Brent Suter, between August and September, made 8 starts and proceeded to go 4.5 innings on average. You are not going to put that in the rotation. David Stearns is a fool if he does. However I am confident he isn't and Suter will not be in the rotation. And for the love of BrewerFan.net I get you like him Clancy, but how rosy do your Suter goggles have to be to say Suter has the potential to be a high-end #2? Those kind of guy don't average 5 innings or less per start. They don't need to be pulled before the other team starts to see him a third time through the order. If you believed in him being a back end #5 starter I would respectively disagree, but please explain the thought process and information that leads you to have that kind of thinking because I have forgotten.

    If he will go for it. If the eventual winning price we can have him for is say $130mil I would just do it. We have already offered over $100mil so just bite the bullet and give this team an ace talent.

    Yah I don’t see that backwards draft order really making sense either. Takes too long for a MLB draftee to make an impact. I also don’t understand you guys trying to give incentives to teams that close to making the playoffs. As we can see with the Brewers after just missing the playoffs they are trying very hard to be there next year. Obviously it’s a different case because they are at what they feel is the start of a window vs. the end. You would want to give incentives to teams that are fringe contention...that are winning 70-80 games. Give the #1 pick to the team with the most wins under 77. That would be interesting because even when rebuilding a team might be interested in dishing out deals to be mediocre. Problem is then maybe young guys aren’t getting as many opportunities, that wouldn’t be good. I think these incentives to win would be terrible in practice though. Either teams won’t bite because it really isn’t that big of a bonus or it would just make a ton of mediocre teams some of which would be blah for years on end. Teams bebuild for a reason, it works. I bet they would still do the same and give young guys a look.

    So a below average hitter who is now old and is becoming questionable in the field. Why you would not just role with Villar who has a much higher ceiling and can't possibly be much worse? No chance Phillips is brought in and he is not getting a multi year deal. He is replacement level.

    How about not. The NBA has this because teams will intentionally tank to get a number one pick because they know with really high centainty the kind of impact a top pick will give them. If the next Lebron James was hitting the draft the amount of teams tanking for the sole purpose for that pick would be terrifying(if there wasn't a lottery). MLB draft is too fluky. If teams knew better what they were getting I could see this being a problem. Unfortunately the only bonafide superstar everyone knew was going to be huge I can think of in the MLB draft(in recent years) was Bryce Harper. I know that idea is far from likely, just a thought. But if tanking isn't a good strategy in baseball, why are so many teams doing it? Just recently the nationals got Strasburg and Harper, cubs got Bryant, Rizzo, schwarber, Astros got Bergman and correa. Tanking has proved extremely effective, I'm not sure how you can dispute that... Never did I say that. I am saying teams are not tanking for draft position like they would in the NBA. Teams in the MLB "tank" because they are selling off their proven assets(Lucroy/Gomez). Teams aren't becoming terrible to get better draft position. What you are proposing would have absolutely zero effect on how teams rebuild. Teams would do exactly what they do now.

    I won't, this team isn't making the playoffs with a bunch of 4 ERA guys. There were only five teams last season who had their starting pitching staffs under a 4 ERA: 1: LAD- 3.39 2: CLE- 3.52 3: ARI- 3.61 4: WAS- 3.63 5: NYY- 3.98 #10: Brewers were at 4.10 You play offense too: NL Playoff Teams: Pitching Rank/Offense Rank Colorado: #9/#1 Chicago: #4/#2 Arizona: #2/#4 LAD: #1/#6 Washington: #3/#3 Milwaukee: #5/#10 (bolded all better than us) Cain/Yelich greatly help the offense, but there is a ton of regression potential on this team. A lot of what they add is likely to be subtracted if we trade Santana and through regression across the team. I just don't think this offense is going to mash to carry a 4.00 ERA staff. If it does it is a wild card birth with a really quick exit.

    I would agree with you that he won't repeat what he did last year, but I think more realistic is the expectation of a 3.30 ERA type season. He definitely had the stats to back up the results and in my opinion really looked like that dominant of a pitcher. Regarding the Zach Davies talk he is a big wild card to me. His K/9 was really low last year, gave up a lot of hits, and his WHIP was way too high. The rough start to the season didn't help things and he was an absolute dumpster fire at Miller Park. The later is interesting because he was not that terrible at Miller Park in 2016. He was actually way better vs. on the road in 2016 and it was the total opposite last year.

    Not wanting Lynn because of bad past experiences with Cardinal pitchers is not only a terrible way to approach anything it is also false. Throw out the Jeff Suppan example because that was pretty dumb before he ever threw a pitch. Not like it was surprising we got terrible results. Kyle Lohse? That turned out pretty stellar. He gave us two great years, well worth the money. Sure he gave us a stinker year, but 2/3 good years when you sign a 34 year old is a dream. Kyle Lohse - 34-36 years old Lance Lynn - 31-34 years old (if he gets 4 year deal) With Lynn the real concern is the spike in HR rate and drop in K rate. If that wasn’t a fluke and his BABIP rises you could have a real big problem on your hands. Still he has seen success consistently over his career.

    Kind of silly to look at it that way...unless you feel if we don’t sign him no one will sign him until after the draft. They are getting a pick regardless if we sign him or not.

    Are they actually doing the demand pricing for this presage? $100 for FDB and $58 for field level seems like a normal price? I thought prices to some of these Cub games were way higher last year.

    Yep, the only way you pull the offer is if you acquire a couple other starters via trade or free agency. Maybe not even then. Because if the Cubs are the last team standing with their supposed 4/90 offer, and they get him for that, I'd be very pissed. If the Brewers aren't getting Darvish, they at least have to continue turning the screws. And that is exactly why the entire world is waiting for Darvish to sign. I would bet money one of the other major FA pitchers has an offer they would accept, but they aren’t going to get the chance to finalize it until Darvish picks a landing spot for the exact reason you stated. The second the Brewers sign Cobb they won’t go after Darvish and everyone would know that. If that led to a team like the Cubs getting a discount it wouldn’t be good. Everyone is pretending to be in on Darvish whether they actually think they can get him or not just to keep his price up for the eventual winner. For that reason it would be incredibly shocking if one of the other pitchers signed first.

    I really don’t think you are paying for past performance. You are paying for say the next 3, but you gotta pay them for 5. Saying they are paying for past performance don’t make sense. Most of these guys went to Harvard, you think they are that dumb? That being said there is risk and sometimes you don’t even get the few good years you are banking on.

    I’d wait out if we were the best offer just because it is us. I’d be like, “The Milwaukee Brewers are offering me the biggest deal...baseballs smallest market? Some big market has to do better, don’t they?”

    We don't even know if the Cubs actually don't want him back. It seems no one is interested in Arrieta because Darvish JUST NEEDS TO SIGN ALREADY(rant over). There was one report a few weeks beack that the Cubs would consider Arrieta if they failed to get Darvish.

    Only problem is you can't sign free agents in July...you are then forced to go and dump out the farm. Not to mention the deadline is a huge crapshoot. You don't want to find yourself desperate come July 31st.

    I think the Brewers offered Darvish 5. They handed Cain 5(which was considered steep for how his market shaped) so I see no reason they wouldn’t aggressively offer Darvish 5 years too. We know the Brewers want a starter badly, have the money, and keeping prospects would be stellar.

    Why do signs point to us not signing him? Nothing has really been reported to say that. There is more actually contrary to that.

    Your theory says you want to (combined?) save up $1mil for an early retirement at 45? That’s going to be one sad retirement.

    Wilson was the one who pushed for this and it is because he wanted to be a Yankee his entire life. This really isn’t much of a PR stunt pushed by the Yankees.
