  1. Competitive balance lottery picks are decided by revenue a team has and their market size. Whether you like it or not St Louis is a very small market and I believe their TV Contract revenue is the 8th lowest or so. I am guessing that holds more weight for deciding who gets a pick because their revenue is something like #8 in all of baseball. I don't get why the Cardinals are getting picks, but according to whatever formula they use they are in the bottom half. I don't think it is such a massive joke like some make it, but I also don't think they should be getting picks.
  2. Because of the draft pick, Fowler is being paid less than the market rate. Disagree. At that price tag you aren't complaining about a lost draft pick. It really only effects a players value when said player is looking at a $40mil contract or so. At that point it becomes fuzzy not when you are pushing $100mil.
  3. The concern should be for the decision making. And the fact he just lost half a season of developement or the fact another positive test comes at the mercy of a 100 game suspension(full year) OR two more is 100+ to total ban. So yeah one should be quite concerned.
  4. Possibly, but one would have to factor in the potential surplus value a player might have since they are only in arbitration. Because Chapman/Fowler are both being compared at market value. Thornburg on the other hand is getting paid well under market value.
  5. I thought I checked his splits and I don't think his numbers vs. lefties have been all that dominating. At least not in the way you would hope for when talking about a LHP.
  6. The loss of value from not getting him for the 2017 season will far outweigh whatever is gained from the contract being shorter(which if he demands the option year it isn't). If we break his value down year by year this upcoming year easily has the best value when you look at it right now. So I would say without a doubt his value is maxed out right now.
  7. Stearns this is not what we meant by targeting high quality prospects.
  8. Couldn't he have gotten some kind of exception for that?
  9. Well if you had valid reason he won't stop it might make sense to add him earlier and avoid a 100 game suspension(nearly a year).
  10. Ahh this is why we had to dump Miguel Diaz and not add him to the 40man. We are going to need that spot so Bickford can actually get on the field and/or not get banned(can't remember if they still ban players and if for what drugs).
  11. He's put up alright power numbers and defense but that's about it. His BA and OBP are not pretty. Yah, I agree, he isn't setting the world on fire. However I think he is at least some kind of MLB contributor and possibly with potential to be a solid starter
  12. The picks are to help teams who can't spend big money stay competitive. You can't just decide that a team is competing so no more pick thereby hurting them in 3-5 years when these picks, in theory, would be on the MLB roster. I don't see the reason in hurting teams just because they know how to use the pick or not suck at building a team. This is just giving each team the same resources(or you know...closer to the same) to be successful.
  13. Would have been funny if we traded Jeffress for him. Lame news though.
  14. Haha well have they? I don't consider Shaws MLB numbers all that successful, especially compared to other third basemen. He has put up average offensive stats and with good defense. Not exactly what I would want, but he fills a hole at the very least. If you can get your difference makers at other positions he is perfectly acceptable. Not bad, not good.
  15. It wouldn't be useful to mention that WAR value at the position they play would it? Or does that not fit the argument you want to make? I really hate usuing WAR for relievers, but here we go anyway: Tyler Thornburg ranked #12 out of #135 relievers with his 2 WAR season. Better than 91% of relievers last year. Travis Shaw was ranked #20 out of #24 3B last year in WAR. Better than just 20% of 3B last year. Only 4 were less valuable full time. It's not useful using WAR in general. If they do then don't they just cancel each other out on the MLB roster? It's like people forget that there were other pieces to the trade and just go bash Shaw. That debatable. I wasn't the one who started the WAR argument of comparing Thornburg/Shaw directly though. I actually even mentioned I hate WAR for relievers, but once again I wasn't the person who mentioned Thornburg's WAR orginially. No, Thornburg's WAR would be superior to Shaw's if they were the same due to position. I don't think anyone is bashing Shaw at all.
  16. In my my opinion venturing past 350 PAs for your minimum is going to lead to inaccurate stats. At that point you are adding a bunch of players with fairly small sample sizes and bench players/utility players that really shouldn't be apart of grading out a starter(like Shaw). Really it is just flat out wrong. The more you play the more WAR you are going to be able to rack up. Obviously Bregmann who got called up late is going to have less WAR and guys who don't play every day won't be able to have a high WAR.
  17. It wouldn't be useful to mention that WAR value at the position they play would it? Or does that not fit the argument you want to make? 18. Or he's selling high. Maybe he and the staff think Thornburg out produced his stat line last year. Sure you can spin it to be selling high or low. Looking at realistic situations he didn't sell at rock bottom, but he sure didn't sell anywhere near the sky high potential either. He could add a lot more value than they did. Tyler Thornburg had the talent to pitch the way he did. That was no fluke last year. The health risk ended up being too much for Stearns and he cashed in now. I am not saying the deal is bad/good. I am just saying Stearns could have left a lot on the table and it could be a deal that comes back to bite him. It isn't like trading Lucroy where it had to happen in July as his value wasn't going to get higher. With Thronburg he traded away a player who could really add to his value.
  19. Why wouldn't you want him? Very dominant over his entire career and if the blown saves in the postseason have downed his value I would be jumping on him pretty fast. He is a known name and that would make him more attractive at the deadline and likely to get a bigger return. The only problem I have is the fact he would almost certainly require a multi year deal. Any signing for a veteran reliever should be a one year deal. If we have to hand Romo 2-3+ years that is a lot of financial risk if he sputters out of the gate and we can never really trade him. I would prefer a veteran on a one year deal who we don't have to commit multiple years to if they can't be flipped. Multiyear bullpen arm deals can also be problematic to trade. Personally I would go with Feliz.
  20. We can sugar coat this any way we want to make the Brewers look good, but bottom line is Stearns is selling low in a sense. He doesn't want to risk an sort of decline/injury which is fine and all. However, with that being said if Thornburg would have continued what he did last year this will be a real head slapper for Stearns at face value. I say face value because you never know what will happen in the end, but obviously we can only grade at face value right now.
  21. Yah, sad that we can't save the money and get prospects to help the next competing team. Not sad if we didn't take a really crappy offer or the fact I get to watch him 4 more years.
  22. annnnnnnnnnnd you lost me. 3.8 x $8M = $30.4M Cespedes put up 2.9 and 2.3 bWAR the last two seasons and he got $29M/year. Yah I see how you got that number. I will just kindly disagree with it's accuracy. Using WAR valuation for FA contract just seems very inaccurate to me
  23. Weeks had a 2 year stint where he wasn't awful defensively. It didn't stick though unfortunately. Early career Weeks was fine. It went bad after 2011 though.
