  1. Wait... the Orioles made a move which made sense (for them)? What's the world coming to...?
  2. Agreed. $6.5M or $6.9M? Isn't that the sort of deal usually settled before the hearing for $6.7M, and your star pitcher is happy... Sounds like he's not as thick-skinned as he claims to be, and will be out of there the first chance he gets...
  3. Of course Chicken Salad can play... have you seen the advanced stats...?
  4. Not to mention Jeffress and Fiers. And they got Jeffress back later (again)...
  5. How much do you think that he regrets turning down the Brewers' final contract extension offer before the trade? I’m pretty sure he approached the team the offseason or two prior to the trade about wanting an extension and he was turned down since there was no interest from the team. Did they really get desperate to trade him without even making him an offer?

  7. You were probably typing that out while I was posting the link...
  8. My apologies if this has already been posted, but I found this fascinating... https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/can-alex-cobb-get-the-thing-back/
  9. By what method... fa or trade? [sarcasm]It's Tim Lincecum...[/sarcasm] (It was either that or "By waiter - he just finished his appetizer...")
  10. I hope teams aren't that stupid. Him missing half a season would be a team missing 50% of one of his "good" seasons. How would that increase his value? He certainly wouldn't get paid as if he pitched that whole season... I hope that Arrieta isn't that stupid. To give up $10-12.5M this season, in the hopes that teams don't care that they've missed that half-season and will cave to Boras' demands, seems awfully risky - the market for him may actually get smaller, depending upon how the season progresses - especially bearing in mind that two of the teams in need of pitching are going to throw money at Cobb and Lynn (not as much, of course, but probably enough that they won't have more to throw at Arrieta). My guess is that Boras is holding out for Cobb and Lynn to sign, and that someone will get desperate to not get left out in the cold...
  11. This was a good, well-thought-out post... Agreed. With all due respect to anyone who thinks that the Brewers would have a chance at a top FA starter next year - I fear they're probably looking through some blue-tinted goggles. Once the big financial guns are back under the threshold and have "reset the clock" then the prices are likely going back up, and out of the Brewers' price range. It's the precise problem I have with the one-year opt-out. And if the prices, as we speculate here, go up next year - the contract could look a lot more attractive to potential trading partners - even more so if it was front-loaded.
  12. Along with every other team, in all likelihood...
  13. I feel the same. I've expressed my concern about the amount being supposedly asked for by TB for Archer, but I'd be much more open to the idea of a package like that for Stroman. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just how I feel - I have a lot more faith in Stroman and, to me, that's worth one less year of control.
  14. Not really the same place. It gives the Brewers another year to better know what they have with Burnes, Woodruff, on down the prospect list, even Hader. Next year it's going to be a lot harder to land TOR starter than this one (see the rest of my quoted post). If Arrieta pitches well and were to bolt for a bigger deal after one year, then how do you replace that? You're not wrong to say that the Brewers would be in a better position to know what they have, but that only helps them if they discover that one of these guys is a TOR starter. If not, you're back where you started and in a year when competition for those players in FA will be a lot greater.
  15. In a year time, Burnes and Ortiz should be MLB ready. And I would like to believe that they'd be TOR starters, but that's asking a lot of rookies. The point made by KCBrewerfan34 is more of an issue for me. If Cobb thinks that he's worth $20M AAV in this market, then he's in for a shock (or I am).
  16. I seem to be in a minority here, but I'm totally against the idea of giving anyone an opt-out after one year. I understand that it might be the only way to get someone like Arrieta to sign but, in a year's time, we're back in the same place only teams like the Dodgers and Yankees (who are spending this year getting their payroll under the tax threshold) will be back in play for the big-name free agents that they're passing on this year - and I strongly suspect that's a significant factor in why the market is slower than usual. If the Brewers were going to get a big name via Free Agency, this was really the year IMHO. Now I'm not advocating signing Arrieta - I preferred Darvish by far, and I do have concerns that the Cubs may have chosen to pass on Arrieta - but I'd be shocked if the Brewers managed to sign a significant SP asset in FA next year, should Arrieta be signed and then opts out after one season (which Boras' ego might make inevitable). If the FO feels that Arrieta is an injury risk I'd rather they stay away entirely and, if not, I would be happier if they didn't offer the opt out after just one year - three, maybe with a front-loaded deal, but not one. If he says no, then he says no. If the one-year opt-out is all you can do to get Arrieta, I'd much rather see if we can get Cobb for much less. He's not as good a pickup, but the idea of his breaking stuff getting all of those ground balls is starting to grow on me a little and he's not an expensive rental.
  17. Is that to me? If so I'm not sure what the issue is. You made a comment that someone speculated on this a week ago. I simply pointed out that this board has been speculating on this for months. What is offensive about that? Not offensive, it just came across as unnecessarily critical, as if the fact that it has been discussed here for some time was reason for me to not express my amusement that Nightingale is reporting it now as if it's "news". I mean it really didn't matter if it had been a week, a month or a year - he's still not breaking news in the way that he's pretending to, and I find that funny... I apologize if I misinterpreted your intent in the comment.
  18. I think people have been speculating that on this forum for about half a year now when it was reported the Cubs seemed unlikely to resign him. A quick look at the OP of this very thread, which was before Thanksgiving will tell you that this was not a new concept a week ago. I'm sorry - I'm not trying to be critical in return but was that really necessary...?
  19. Hmmmm... didn't someone here speculate that almost a week ago...?
  20. Well, Mejia started in AA last season, and I think he hasn't played in AAA, so they might expect him to start the season in AAA. Pina seems like an upgrade over what Cleveland have on the roster, so in a trade for Salazar and Kipnis (as an example) I could easily see them viewing Pina as a nice, cheap stopgap (and upgrade) for a year and insurance in case Mejia doesn't stick at catcher. No. Pina not sought after or needed in Cleveland (even if Mejia was dealt). Both Gomes & Perez have multi yr contracts with control (or options) for another 3 to 5 seasons each. Mejia & Eric Haase both started last season in AA. Mejia got a Sept call up since he was already on the 40 man. Haase got a week or so in AAA. Haase was added to the 40 man in October so he wasn't lost in minor league free agency or the R5 draft. Hitting 27 bombs from the C/ DH role (when Mejia caught) will tend to make someone stand out in AA. Unless a move if made, the pair likely splits time in AAA during 2018. Having Mejia learn another spot helps to get his bat into the lineup beyond just catching or DH. That's fine - I defer to you in terms of knowledge of Cleveland players. I was just using them as an example. My original thought still makes sense to me though - having thought enough of Vogt to quickly sign him to a two-year deal, the most obvious reason (to me) for the Brewers to be searching for a "serviceable catcher" is that one of Pina, Vogt or Bandy (I could barely add him without laughing) might be potentially outbound in a trade.

  22. Have we really heard anything about them not being happy with Pina? I feel the opposite is probably true. He could drop off a bit offensively and still be an important part of the club. Oh I agree, but if another team says "we'll give you the starting pitcher you want in exchange for [insert list of players]", and Pina is one of those players in the package that they want, do you say no? Probably not...
  23. Here's a thought... and I apologize if someone else has already speculated this... What if either Pina or Vogt is being included as a part of a package in trade discussions with other teams? Let's be honest - how many people here think of Bandy as even "serviceable" right now? If you trade one of those two then a "serviceable catcher" becomes much more interesting as a FA - perhaps to hold down the position until Nottingham arrives (I know, people here doubt him but it sounds like the FO still holds out hope) or another young catcher they might be talking about acquiring (one whom they feel is possibly still a year away from the majors).

  25. What makes the Cubs the benchmark for free agent decisions? He's just talking about Arrieta here, not free agents in general. And I understand why. They have first-hand knowledge of Arrieta's current talent and health, and are (at least in theory) in a better position to judge his value relative to what he's asking for...
