  1. It must be hard to live life like that... I've never seen 10 million dollars...but I know it exsists.
  2. Huh? Am I missing something here? RLuz if you're going to make a point with stats, at least be accurate. In the numbers you showed 54% of GB were NOT pulled... How then can the author of this study say "Most GB are pulled"...oh that's right, that's the side of the arguement he needs to make in order for his study to work. Who's not being objective?
  3. You're right it's impossible to be objective unless you quote some stats...I forgothttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
  4. Here are some specific criticisms for you.... Or really? Most ground balls are pulled...that's good science. I couldn't get the chart to copy but...I guess 1% is enough evidence of "effect".... In addition...K's and BB's go down with speedy runners at 1b (more FB in the zone anyone?) as do HR's (you mean guys aren't swinging for the fence with a speedy runner at 1b...wow what a shock!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif ) I read so many assumptions of these type in this study that I can not possibly accept any conclusions it drew. Not to mention...you can't explain a pitchers mentality with a study!!! Also it takes no accout on game situations...which most studies have a hard time with... Baseball is a game played in real-time not in a spreadsheet... Edit:Sp
  5. End, You don't think a pitcher's mentality has any effect on his performance? I showed 3 ways in which the pitchers performance will be directly influenced by a speedy baserunner... What the hitter does with each pitch is a seperate issue...you can't study the two together...which is why I see the study as flawed. Once the ball leaves the pitchers hand, the study of the effects of the runner are over...now it becomes a study of the hitter.
  6. Here we go with the condescension again....Do you think I'm some kind of uneducated hick? I have never accused you of needing climb out from behind your computer screen and experience the game...I think I deserve the same kind of respect. How 'bout this Rluz...there is no study around that will get you into a pitcher's head and tell you how it affects him to have Carl Crawford at 1st base. No need to study methodology, no need to pull out the ole slide rule, no reason to examine the findings...just because someone crunches number and spits out a conclusion does not make the study right. You're honestly convinced there is a study that can predict how a pitcher THINKS or FEELS? Just because I find different (non-stat) means to discredit studies doesn't make me wrong. I just have a different filter that I look at things through. You look at all things from a statistical filter. I use my baseball background and some stats (I love the ops stat for advanced players- college and older). But because you don't have experience with my type of filter, you discredit me and my conclusions...which I find very distasteful. I know this is going to be hard to hear Rluz...but everything on a baseball diamond can not be quantified by stats...no matter what all that fancy book learnin' tells you. Then again...I'm jus a dum ole jock...don't mind me
  7. I totally disagree with the bold statement...positioning of the fielders has absolutely nothing to do with the "mentality" of a pitcher with a runner on base. These are the kind of statistical analyses that make me cringe...you cannot statistically prove or disprove the mental effect on a pitcher with a speedy runner on first. Things that do happen to pitchers with runners on 1st base: 1. Pitching from the stretch- Quicker delivery, rushing, can cause occasional loss of velocity and sometimes results in flatter pitches due to changes in mechanics. (Nomo is an extreme example) 2. Tendency to throw more FB in certain counts: Smart catchers and managers are going to change their pitch selection in running counts, resulting in more FB to hit. 3. More pickoff attempts at 1b- more attempts= more chances for errors. Add to those facts that pitchers, managers and fielders have to be actively "concentrating" on speedy runners and you have a distinct advantage. I find it hard to argue that it is only "perceived" no matter what any stats may say.
  8. I would say my prep arms are (all guys I have seen): 1) Brett Anderson 1a) Betances 2) Walden 3) Drabek 4) Colton Willems 5) Rasmus 6) Latos
  9. Colby, I actually like Betences the best out of the prep arms...and I also think that Brett Anderson might be the best "pitcher" (college or HS) in the draft. I also agree with you on Drabek...his stuff is nasty and so is his demeanor...he's going to be a winner. I used the examples of Latos and Walden purely because they are near the top of everyone's list.
  10. Frog, For me it not so much of a case of pitching being dominant, but how few of the HS guys have distinguished themselves. At this time last year you could reasonably predict which HS players would go in the first 2 rounds (plus sandwich). In addition, you had some "can't miss" position kids like Upton, Maybin, and a few others. This year there isn't a clear-cut prospect. Ask 10 different pro scouts who their #1 HS prospect is and you?re likely to get 10 different answers...this year. I think in years where no guys stand out early (of which this is one) teams kind of defer to College and HS pitchers in the early rounds. I think you will see arms (both college and HS) dominate the early parts of this year?s draft. Not because they are dominate prospects but because they are "safer" picks and easier for organizations to justify. It's easier to justify picking a Jordan Walden who's been 94-95 or Matt Latos (94-95) this year than a position guy who might not pan out.
  11. Athens, You're comparing apples to oranges...Pujols is the best hitter in the game... LH hitters are inherently more valuable, all things being equal, because they are more rare. LH power hitters are even more valuable. I don't see why this is a hard concept...
  12. UWRyan, I love Maybin, I wish the Brewers would have taken him. That being said he has a bellow average to avererage arm at best. Maybe you were thinking of Upton?
  13. Seeing as I've seen them all play in person, I think I am able to speak on the matter. Reguardless wasn't this thread asking for opinions? Time will tell...
  14. Colby, I gotta battle you on a few guys... Rasmus should be in the top 30...97 and he did it 4 or 5 times...not to mention he didn't throw a FB slower than 94 mph.. Also I think of the HS SS Ryan Adams is the best "all around" package followed closely by Grant Green. I would also include Parmalee in the top 30...he hit all summer against all of the best pitching...he just continued to mash. You can't say that about most of the guys that are considered "top prospects"...this kid has a special bat. Oviously this is all good natured speculation on my part...you did a great job as always with the profiles!
  15. If Gordon stays healthy its Gordon by a longshot.... Many people don't realize it but he runs as good or better than Braun, has plus power, and a plus arm...oh yeah and he bats LH.
  16. I know there is a thread on this already but I thought it would be nice to consolidate all these into one place. Here are the players that signed NLI in the early period in WI: Chris Roberts IF Oshkosh West- MI State Tony Butler LHP Oak Creek- Arkansas Chad Pierce C Fond du Lac- Arkansas RJ Seidel RHP LaCrosse Central- Arkansas Wes Munson IF Fond du Lac- Missouri Sam Sivilotti OF Nicolet- UW-Milwaukee Joe Muraski LHP/OF DC Everest- Northwestern Jason Hooper RHP Lake Mills- U of Jacksonville There will be many more that end up signing later...
  17. Again...that comparison is silly...it's a completely different set of circumstances. You used this point to argue HOF4canrake's point about how good teams knock in runs from 3B. How is comparing that to men on 2nd with 0 outs relevant? A better comparison would be to compare how often runners score from 2B with 1 out vs 3B with 1 out. Might as well compare how often the lead off man hits a 2 out home run under a full moon vs how often a man scores from 3rd. I slammed the fact that you used numbers that had little relevance to HOF4's point and then used fuzzy ones at that. Not pissed about stats...I agree that there are things that can be learned from using them...BUT...I also know that predictions are only that...the best statistical guess. Weathermen use similar tools to predict the weather and we all know how often they're 100% correct http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif As for not understanding stats...I guess if you're not a "believer" you just don't understand right?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif What's your definition Casey? 1 Std Dev?...2?...How bout 3? or does it change based on what point you're arguing? You're right pogokat...I apologize for that. But it is far less condescending than the treatment people receive from some members when they dare question the almighty "SABRE" as the answer to all questions on this site. Edit:formatting
  18. I took this to task a little bit in another thread but it's worth another swing... I do agree that stats have a place in predicting what MIGHT happen in a given circumstance. HOWEVER! Baseball players are not robots, they don't play the game as a set of "1"'s and "0"'s like in Playstation... There are human beings involved here, emotions, tensions, and inconsistient behaviors. Pitchers squeeze the ball a little harder, catchers are a little less likely to stick a pitch on the corner and infielders play in different positions with men on 3rd than with men on 2nd or 1st. To sugest that there's little difference in the 2 situations just beacuse men score "about as often" from 2nd with 0 outs as from 3rd with 1 out is missing the point. I also think it's kind of telling that you stat guys use the "about as often" when your point isn't as strong. There are 12 "or so" ways to score from 3rd that aren't true of 2nd base. That's the situation the Brewers are failing in on the FIELD not on the spreadsheet. Edit:Sp
  19. Patrick, Cameron Maybin will also attend Lake City CC this fall...should be an interesting team to say the least. Big opportunity for a few WI preps to play in front of some of the biggest eyes in baseball this spring.
