  1. ESPN2 is now blacked out. Too bad because their cameras weren't nearly as blurry as FSN's
  2. A true splitter is thrown with the ball wedged between the index and middle fingers and the thumb tucked under. The thing that makes Gange's more splitter-like is the life it has on it.
  3. I'd say it's a true splitter. He probably threw 4 of them in all the games I watched last year (60+). I'm not sure why. I guess if you look at the grip he does make a circle with his index finger and thumb but that is about where the change-up similarities end. Here's a couple of pics of the grip FYI: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b18/blazer25/Gangevulcan2.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b18/blazer25/Gangevulcan.jpg Here is a true circle grip for comparison sake: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b18/blazer25/santanacircle.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b18/blazer25/MadduxCircle.jpg Notice that the fingers are together on circle and spread apart on "Vulcan". Also the ball in Gange's grip doesn't make contact with his index/thumb circle as firmly as Santana's and Maddux's do.
  4. Gagne's change is really closer to a splitter than a true change-up. It's been called a "vulcan change" for the way he grips it between his middle and ring fingers. That combined with the higher velocity of the pitch than a typical change give it more splitter life than change-up life. Change-ups typically fade to the pitchers arm side and sink a little (Santana's sinks a lot). Splitters typically go straight down. Gagne's goes straight down. Others: Bush was a FB/CB/CH guy last year Sheets FB/CB occasional CH Soup FB/CB/SL/CH Villy FB/CH/ also SL/CB Yo FB/CB/SL/CH Mota FB/ CH (Splitter-type like Gagne) Riske FB (sinker)/ Splitter/ CH Torres FB/ Splitter also has a SL Turnbow FB/SL occasional Splitter I think Parra is a sinker/ slider guy who also has a CH but I could be wrong.
  5. Check...1...2. Check...1..2..3..Yost. Yosted. Just getting the ole vent thread warmed up. See you all on Monday.
  6. Wow the Tennessee v Louisville game might have been the most exciting game of the tournament. What a high energy dunk fest. I love the tourney! Tomorrow will hopefully bring a Bucky win and some more exciting games.
  7. I'll throw in another pitch for the Taylor Made R7. Best club I've ever bought. I've played golf since I was 9 YO, not often enough to become good but enough to be dangerous. I have a fierce slice at times. The draw weighted R7 has given me 20 yards more distance and reduced the slice dramatically. Even when you mis-hit it the ball goes straight and far.
  8. Does this mean we get to see Villy start the home opener? That would be great. Cutting Vargas outright is a strange move but I think the impact it will have is very small. Melvin seems to be taking the "classy" road by saying that CV is a big leaguer and deserves to get a shot in the bigs with another club. I guess I'll buy it.
  9. My problems batting Mike Cameron second have to do with Ned's move of Braun to 4 and Prince to 3 for the stolen base angle. The idea that Braun should bat behind Prince so he can utilize his speed and steal bases if fine I guess. What I don't get is having our best base runner in Mike Cameron batting in front of Prince. Does that now negate Cameron's speed? Is it OK for Cameron to run in front of Prince but not Braun? I don't get it. Doesn't jive to me.
  10. Danzig, I agree 95% with you. Barro did develop nicely and was a fantastic defender late in his career for MU. I hope Crean finds more guys like him. As for the Lopez twins and lack of whatever for MU...if McNeal's shot goes in to put MU up by 3 in OT we're not having this conversation either. MU did fine against Stanford until Barro fouled out. Yes the twins did dominate but they do that to teams that have big guys just as well. None of Stanford other guys did anything.
  11. Logan, Not calling you out but here is what I know: Pudge in his prime was a 1.7- 1.75 thrower. He has a very strong arm and very good feet. I'd guess if you put Pudge on a radar gun to 2b he'd be 87+ mph which is in the top 1%. I have seen Vinny play the IF up close when he was in Beloit. He had an average arm if I was being generous from a strength standpoint. That means if you were to put him on a radar gun across the IF he'd be 87-88 mph or so. That's probably in the 45-50% of all MLB IFers. He probably had average feet for a 3B. Now you have to remember that's standing up with all of your momentum into the throw. Catchers generate much less momentum and use less of their body and full armswing on their throws. We actually use 1.95 as MLB average when we look at our prospects but in reality there are some guys playing in the bigs right now that probably put the average around 2.00 or worse. Now I've never seen Vinny catch in person so he might have amazing feet behind the plate but based on what I saw on the IF it's not likely. Combine those two things and I assume Vinny throws closer to average than the 1.85 numbers Bill was throwing around. Still pretty good, and if he were able to produce at the plate like he's done in the minors he'd be a viable starter. Certainly better than many of the guys that teams run out there on a regular basis.
  12. Wow that's juvenile. Here's a juvenile response: 12/8/07 5:00pm Marquette 81 UW 76 @ Kohl Center Madison, WI It's amazing to me how so many Badger-only fans have the little brother syndrome when it comes to MU basketball. Why not root for both teams? I root hard for the Badgers whenever they're not playing MU. I hope they win the whole deal. I'm actually a hockey partial season ticket holder. I just find their style of basketball less exciting to watch. Kind of like watching the Bears make it to the Superbowl. Effective yet boring.
  13. Other teams have had combinations similar to MU and won a national title. None of these teams had a main contributor over 6-9. UNLV '90 Arkansas '94 Arizona '97 Michigan State '00 Maryland '02 Syracuse '03 I think that research is kind of bunk. Either that or the guy didn't look very hard. All teams have players taller than 6-8. Not all of them contribute equally. Barro is a very good defender but a suspect offensive player. What I'm saying is having "big-ish" guys (6-8, 6-9) that can move, jump, rebound, defend and score is better than having a bunch of Stiemsma's in my opinion. It's great if you can recruit two athletic 7-footers but that is not realistic. Some guys named Wade and Novak might disagree with you.
  14. See above... And McNeal's shot was taken with about 3 sec left on the clock. There was 8 sec when they inbounded. I agree it was a terrible shot. But the only difference between it and the one the kid from W KY took is that W KY's went in. They were both bad looks.
  15. How can you say the W KY shot was a better play than MU's last look? Because it went in? In fact it was a worse look than McNeal had at the end of regulation and I thought that was a terrible shot. And you think Crean said during the timeout, "Just take it coast to coast and throw it up?" You really think he didn't call some kind of play?
  16. Announcers...those guys are usually spot on. Watch it again Jason...that thing was a prayer.
  17. 8 types of mustard in our fridge. I love the stuff! Grey Poupon Silver Spring Chipotle SS Beer and Brat SS Stone Ground Horseradish Jack Daniels #7 Heart of Wisconsin Sweet and Hot Amish made Honey Mustard Chinese Hot Mustard Mustard is a great sauce for just about anything and an amazing pre-grilling rub for your favorite steak or chicken breasts. Best to use a mustard that doesn't have sugar in it for the steaks (all except honey mustard for the most part).
  18. Was that supposed to be in blue? The kid from Western KY had 3 guys in his face and was fading away on his game winner. Hardly what I'd call a good look or even well run play. Though I do agree with your premise that way too many teams abandon their offense late in the game. As for Marquette, they relied very little on 3 point shot to win this year. Most of their offense came from guards going to the rim which they do as well as anyone in the country. That combined with their desire to push the ball after their defensive pressure created TO's was why they were so exciting to watch. Marquette's problems this year came when they got lax on defense or when they committed turnovers. Very rarely did they live and die on the "3".
  19. Now that I've had time to decompress I'd say I agree with you Rydogg. It really sucks that this is the end of the line for them. They are a blast to watch play the game.
  20. Who is "they"? I have no doubt in my mind that Vinny does not throw pop times in the 1.85 range in game action. Whoever was claiming that needs a new stopwatch (or to re-learn how to use it)
  21. Really? You must be a die hard Badger fan then. I expected them to win. I really thought they had a shot to make the final 4.
  22. Seriously?!? Their coach was out at the free throw line arguing a call after he had already been warned to stay in the coaches box. How bout with 13 min to go Stanford was in the double bonus and had only "committed" 2 fouls.
  23. Pretty much all of this is wrong so I'm not sure where to start. Mbakwe 6-7 Burke 6-8 Hazel 6-7 Heyward 6-6 All coming back. As for not recruiting big guys, I'd rather have MU's version of bigger athletic guys than the 7 foot stiffs the Badgers run out there every night. As to not recruiting shooters? Steve Novak ring a bell? Obviously no one on the roster is a shooter of that caliber but that's not quite the game they've played this year. They have 4 guys on the floor that can go to the rim as well as anyone in the country. Michigan State won a national championship without a big man or a "pure shooter". When they get some calls they win. When they don't they struggle. They shot well tonight even though they didn't get the foul calls around the hoop.
