  1. Actually size has little to do with projection as far as relief vs starters go. There are just as many successful SP's that are 6-1 and under as their are RP's. Stuff is what makes a guy a reliever/ starter. Here is a general breakdown: 2 plus pitches+ 1 MLB ave pitch= Ace/ perrenial all-star 1 plus pitch+ 2 MLB ave pitches= Top half of the rotation 3 ave MLB pitches= Middling Starter 2 ave pitches= Middle reliver/ long guy 1 plus pitch + One MLB ave pitch = Setup guy/ serviceable closer 2 plus pitches or 1 (++) pitch + 1 ave MLB pitch= Top of the line closer Obviously there are exceptions to the rule. Whenever a guy has a (++) pitch it can "even-out" not having something else. Ben Sheets being a good example. His ++ CB makes his below ave change-up not much of a factor.
  2. How can anyone hate on Joe? At this point in their careers Joe Dillon is the "poor man's Jeff Cirillo". Everyone loves Cirillo because he's a gritty "professional hitter". Joe Dillon is a similar guy only younger. I heart Joe Dillon! Dude works the count and actually hits to all fields. He's the anti-Bill Hall at the plate.
  3. I gave up dipping for lent including Sundays. I am also going to try giving up fast food...my head may explode but it will be good for me. (The giving up the bad stuff not the exploding)
  4. GP, I'm fairly certain that all HS leagues in the state (both WIAA and summer legion/ travel) use the NFHS (National Federation of High Schools) baseball rule book. I do think the WIAA makes slight modifications but not much. You can get the NFHS books Here The WIAA adaptations to the NFHS rules (there's only a handful) are Here
  5. How do you figure? Butler is a 6-7 LHP who's been in the 93-94 mph range in the past and has a +CB. He was playing in his first full year in the pros and happend to be in his home state. Not exactly an easy task for a 19 year old. Jeffress throws in the upper 90's with zero command and lacks a big league quality secondary pitch. Oh yeah he's also been suspended already for a banned substance. To say that one blows the other away is well off the mark. I think time will show that Butler is a better prospect than you think.
  6. I get paid to watch baseball. (albeit a small amount). I get free gear from our clubhouse store/ equipment guy on occasion. I can get free entrance to all HS, College and Minor League games and can get into MLB games if I call ahead. When working for a different company, I get paid travel, lodging, and food to watch and evaluate baseball players as well as getting paid a wage. I just wish I could make all this a full-time gig. Right now it's about a 50% deal. Not that I'm complaining believe me.
  7. It's not really "free money". It's our money to begin with. I'd rather it go to a bunch of families that paid it in, rather than to have it spent by the government on some national bike trail or wax museum. To suggest the government doesn't have the money is laughable. They just need to cut some of the ridiculous wasteful spending and we could see reductions in the tax rate on a permanent level. The only way this is free money is if you're in the 20% of people getting a check who don't pay income tax. That's free money or wealth redistribution. To the majority of us it's our own money to begin with. Bring on the $600...Daddy needs a new shotgun!
  8. I think a more apt comparison to Brewer is Justin Upton and the D-Backs wasted no time making an OF out of him. The scary thing is Upton has better hands/ infield tools than Brewer. Brent Brewer on the IF is a classic square peg/ round hole scenario. The Brewers scouting dept does a great job with amateur players on the offensive side. Defense...not so much.
  9. That statement right there is why you should take most of those defensive metric and throw them in the fire. They're junk. Hardy's got about average range for a MLB SS but he's also got one of the quicker transfers in the league. He's also got above average hands and a slightly above average arm. He's solid and moving him to 3B would not only negate some of his defensive ability but also take away his value as an offensive player. As a 3B he's below average with the bat, at SS his average to slightly above if he continues on his success this year. I know you stat lovers might get bent out of shape, but really defense is one area where scouting has a huge advantage in player evaluation. The offensive side I think is a wash scouting/stats. I just think there are too many variables to defense that one needs to see with the naked and trained eye that can't be explained by a formula. I saw Brent Brewer play 10+ games in HS. He's going to end up in CF. Tremendous athlete with cast iron hands.
  10. Pinstripes and the old terrible logo. It's no longer "old school". It's no longer cool. It's now a reminder of how we haven't won anything in 26 years and counting. And while we're on the subject...I really wish we'd quit hiring ex-Brewers in any capacity.
  11. Stosh Wawrzasek is a HS kid to keep and eye on. He's from Langley, BC and is a RHP. He's built like a barrel (6-1 and 230) but his arm is special. FB @ 90-93 with hard sink. Power breaking ball at times and I love his approach to pitching. Comes after guys with his FB and really pounds the zone with that sinker. Closers mentality and will have closers stuff when he learns to be consistient with the CB. He was one of my favorite guys at the PG national. Not much projection but he's pretty darn good already.
  12. I actually contributed some of the scouting notes that went in Zarraga's report at the NE showcase. I was impressed by how well he moved behind the plate for a bigger kid. He catches and throws very well during games. He is also very good on balls in the dirt. He hunts outs behind the plate and throws behind runners consistently for outs. He's very athletic and probably bigger than the 210 he's listed at by PG. He's put together. At the plate, he's a little bit of a swinger and will chase bb's out of the zone. But he's got legit 30+ raw power and I think they'll close him up which will help his approach at the plate some. I also remember that he was a great kid. Good to talk to, good with his teammates, mature enough to carry on a conversation with the scouts that were around and a leader on the field. I think the Brewers got a good one there.
  13. Trust me it's not a Milwaukee thing. It's a too much time on your hands, easily offended, PC thing.
  14. My definition of a professional hitter has always been guys like Todd Helton, Larry Walker, Lyle Overbay, and Jeff Cirillo. Guys that do the little things well. Get on base, go the other way, drive in runs...basically whatever the situation asks for. Also known as the anti-Estrada. The possession receiver is a good analogy.
  15. Didn't see it there. Mods feel free to move.
  16. Well now we know why Mark A sent that nice little letter. Taken from here: Linkage. It always about getting deeper into our pockets...just like when Uncle Bud was running the show. What a scam! Oh well. With Nedly back and the 9% increase I guess it will just be single games next year, no way I'm renewing the 20 pack.
  17. We get Ned back next year and ticket prices are going up 9%...joy. Seriously did someone let Wendy back in the building? I'm fairly certain I will not re-up my 20 game pack.
  18. From McCalvy's comments. This is praise worthy? This is why Ned is still our manager? Because he was patient with 2 of our future conerstones in years where we didn't have a shot to win anything? Because he was ok with trading away Lyle Overbay so a potential league MVP could start his career? Wow! Talk about setting the bar low. It's like DM is rewarding Ned for being the manager of the crappy Brewers with a chance to ruin a team that has a chance of winning next year. "Ned you were a good soldier when we were 67-94. We don't really think you're the best man for the job but we're going to make it up to you by letting you manage 1 more year to prove to everyone that you unequivocally suck." Did someone let Wendy back in the building? I wish that was all it took to keep my job.
  19. I'm with you my brother. I've been doing the same thing all night. YES! Cubs lose! Cubs lose!
  20. So what was the guy holding up behind home plate in the 9th inning? It had some kind of red light around the outside. The 2B umpire made the guy stop. He looked like a Cub fan. Idiots.
  21. Wow kgbaseball... Who do you like tomorrow? I'll fade your picks and make some money. Like printin' money! http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif Kidding of course.
  22. D-i-c-k Stockton should stick to football. He's a terrible baseball PBP man. Actually all of the announcers have been bad thus far. Edit: Apparently the cuss filter doesn't like the shorted version of Richard.
  23. Anyone still think Ryan Braun won't end up as a LF'er? Wow he's actually worse than when I saw him in AZ...brutal. Yost should still leave him in when the game is in the balance though because the kid can mash.
  24. Actually sometimes they do less than that. Some common bench coach duties: Hitting fungos Throwing BP Spitting chew Telling Jokes They're probably the most inconsequential member of an MLB staff. It's basically a way to get one of your "buddies" the best seats in the house to 162 games.
  25. How about leaving your All-star closer rotting in the bullpen (again) while Turnblow walks in a run to a catcher batting .176 on 4 straight with two outs? Do I win a prize? Can I manage one of the last games? I promise I won't do worse than Yost.
