  1. When you have a League when most of the really good players want to either play in a major market like NYC, LA, Miami, etc or they all want to play on the same team as each other competitiveness kind of goes by the wayside. Add in the fact that the draft is becoming more like the MLB draft where even top five picks take years to develop, which makes it hard for the really bad teams to improve quickly. I’ll watch the Bucks from time to time but in general I could not care less about the NBA.
  2. The rotation is NOT a strength of this team. They’ve been bailed out countless times by the offense in some cases and the bullpen in others. The big concerns were that Anderson would revert back to his old self, which it seems like he has, and that Nelson won’t be himself either, which we’ll have to wait and see. We could use an upgrade in my opinion
  3. I’d hate to go into the playoffs with this rotation. The team ERA for starting pitchers in currently 10th in the NL. Yes we get Nelson back but he’s coming back from a significant shoulder injury and counting on him to be the 2017 version of Nelson is risky. If we have a chance to upgrade the rotation we shouldn’t hesitate. I’d much rather do that than rely on a couple of rookies like Peralta or Burnes. I’d argue starting pitcher and a super utility guy that can handle SS should be our two biggest targets.
  4. We probably will take an outfielder. A “toolsy” one at that.
  5. I’d substitute either Woodruff, Ortiz or Peralta for Williams because I dont think teams generally care about replacing relievers but it seems about right as far as what I’d offer. It’s a real shame about Dubon as he’d be the obvious choice to replace Arcia next season.
  6. We can go back and forth forever but the point is Baltimore isn’t trading Machado for a return that includes Ponce and Supak type pitchers, not unles there is a heck of a lot more along with it.
  7. That’s one example, and it’s not even as bad as you’re making it out to be. Segura was a top 60 prospect and I saw Hellweg as high as the Angels #6 prospect. In other half season rentals, the Indians got two highly rated prospects from us in Laporta (Brewers #1) and Brantley (who they picked over Cain and Lucroy) plus two others. And the Yankees got Torres, who was a top 30 in all of baseball prospect, plus others for a half season of Chapman. It depends on how the Orioles view Arica but I think assuming Supak and Ponce are the types of pitchers the Orioles would settle for is severely underrating Machado’s value. As I said, he’s putting up MVP numbers. They aren’t accepting a deal for a struggling shortstop with severe offensive question marks and two low ceiling starting pitching prospects who aren’t even organizational top 10 prospects in a weak system.
  8. Manny Machado isn’t your typical rental though. He’s putting up MVP caliber numbers at a premium position and he’s in the prime of his career. He’s not some reliever or #3 type pitcher. Yes his value is diminished but multiple teams will still come calling. Arcia might tempt them but he’s struggling terribly right now and if Baltimore doesn’t think this is an outlier then Arica is worthless to them.
  9. I guess it depends on what we have to give up. Given how we’ve handled the rotation since Stearns has been here (handled in the sense that he avoided trading prospects for established pitching and passed on free agents) it seems like we are kind of depending on our starting pitching prospects to fill in the rotation the next few years. If we have to trade two or three of our best pitching prospects (say Burnes and Peralta or Woodruff) PLUS a top positional prospect I think we would have to change our entire strategy the next few years to fill in the rotation. I’m not sure how “worth it” that would be but it would certainly be risky. I’m also of the opinion that our rotation isn’t strong enough to win the WS this year so that increases the risk further. To answer your question, if trading for Machado guaranteed a championship then yes I’d move Burnes, Hiura and Peralta (as an example). But I think it’s too risky to give up so much right now given that even with Machado we are far from guaranteed a championship.
  10. As much as I like Machado I think trading for him would be foolish. It’d cost a ton and he’s gone after this year. Our system lacks top tier talent as it is, trading away what little top tier talent we do have will really hurt the systems depth. Id rather get a Neil Walker type who can be an upgrade over Arcia’s woeful numbers than to go all in on Machado. I still think if we go all in on anyone it needs to be a quality starting pitcher who is here at least thru next season. The bullpen is historically good right now and the offense, when everyone is healthy, is more than capable. We need help at SS and possibly at catcher but I wouldn’t go crazy trading away 4 of our top 6 prospects for half a season of Machado.
  11. I’d rather take my chances with Archer then continuing to throw Brent Suter out there. Archer isn’t an “ace”, but he likely makes the team better. His bad nine start beginning to the season doesn’t all of a sudden make him a bad pitcher. He’d clearly be a top five starting pitcher on this team. And I think going to a contender from a team that’s already out of it 38 games into the season might help him refocus a bit. I’d take him in a heartbeat but the price would have to be right.
  12. It not much of an argument but neither is the “he’s pitching bad now in Tampa so that means he’d be pitching bad now if we traded for him” argument. It’s pointless to look at how someone is doing under completely different circumstances and argue that he’d be doing the same same here.
  13. This is a tough argument to make. Just because Archer is bad in TB doesn’t mean he would have been equally bad in Milwaukee. Let’s also not forget that in the spot Archer or anyone else would have taken Suter has made 7 starts with an ERA over 5 and Woodruff has started two games and he currently has an ERA over 8. So it’s not like the guys we are using instead are any better. Meanwhile, not that I would have advocated giving Arrietta the contract he got from Philly, but he currently has a 2.59 ERA through 7 starts. Ultimately I think we’d still have have better off with an Archer or Arrietta because I don’t think they are nearly as bad as their early early numbers indicate.
  14. A month later and he’s still DHing. Not good.
  15. Any chance they grab Falk if he’s there? He could be a guy that nets them a second round pick in a few years. The backup QB position is far from settled. Huntley showed nothing and Kizer has a long way to go.
  16. I don’t understand why we are letting travel ball dictate when high school ball is played. Let’s play in 35 degree weather half the season so the for-profit travel teams can get better players.
  17. I wondered if the Packers were interested in moving up for Chubb. I also wondered if they would perhaps take their pick and try to parlay it into multiple first rounders, maybe a lower one this year and another one next year. Really a lot of ways they could go here.
  18. Yeah I’m anti wasteful spending but I don’t consider sports wasteful spending. They help kids stay active, make friends, improve self esteem, learn how to deal with failure, etc. I realize all that can be done with AAU and traveling sports as well. If we’re truly at that point where High School sports are irrelevant than absolutely get rid of them. But I don’t think they’ll ever be irrelevant. Heck now local high school sports are even being shown on tv. They’re getting their own websites and sponsorships. It seems like they are ten times more popular then when I was there.
  19. I’ve read a couple articles on the ending of summer ball. The main reason they seem to suggest was because of travel ball. If that’s the case it’s actually pretty disappointing. I get that a lot of players do the traveling team thing but I’d have to imagine most players don’t. Now the ones that don’t will have to decide between baseball and other sports if they indeed do play other sports. I just think High Schools should do what’s best for everyone, not the few select players who want to play on a non high school team as well.
  20. There were quite a few summer teams. A lot of high schools in the area. I know the West Bend schools played summer too. We played games in Kettle Morraine. Slinger. Watertown. Random Lake. Etc. I read that at its peak 110 schools played summer ball. I’m fact, when I played I didn’t know where was a spring season too. But I agree. I’d like to know the reason for the two seasons to begin with. It wasn’t lack of fields because most schools either have their own or they live a community with a field at a nearby park or something. I honestly wonder if some schools didn’t want to play in our crappy spring weather.
  21. I don’t think it’s really a “snow” thing as much as it is a “weather” thing. We can all agree it rains a lot more in April and May then it does in June and July. We can also agree that the temperature is usually significantly lower in April and May then it is in June and July. Personally I just think it would suck to play when it’s 40 degrees out and windy. I’ve played outdoor volleyball in that weather and it’s just plain miserable. And volleyball has a lot less standing around not doing anything then base does. I get that weather isn’t necessarily an overriding factor. I just am curious then if not weather what the overriding factors are? They were mostly in the Milwaukee area.
  22. Would you see to elaborate? I don’t understand why playing baseball in between snowstorms makes way more sense but I’m willing to listen.
  23. Weather like we’ve had the last two days and going forward this week is why I don’t understand why teams are interested in spring ball. Plus, it sucks for kids who have life outside of baseball. My school didn’t seem to really have anyone playing travel ball so had they chosen to move to the spring for that reason pretty much anyone interested in track or tennis would have been SOL. That’s if we would have even had a team as both my junior and senior year my varsity baseball team only had 11 players.
  24. Not one quality pitcher was available for trade? I think even Gerritt Cole would have helped. You cant just say which is more valuable 2 years of Gray or 5 years of Yelich. You have to look at he whole picture. If they had acquired Gray, for instance, they still could have signed Cain, had a starting outfield of Cain, Braun, and Santana with Broxton and Philips coming off the bench and Thames and Aguilar platooning at first. I really don’t know how much worse that is than what we have now. Plus then you have Gray in the rotation vs, say, Suter or Guerra. Then also consider Gray probably wouldn’t have cost as much as Yelich, meaning you still have the prospects and then if Gray leaves in two years you have to take into account what they do with the money (or if the trade him who do they get in return). Then there’s also the fact that Gray could have gotten them into the postseason last season. How valuable is that? Regarding Archer. I have no idea if he’s more valuable than Yelich or nkt but in general I’d say pitchers are more valuable than hitters. Yeah he’s had a rough start but it’s only been three games. To be 100% honest if the package was the same and I had my choice of Yelich or Archer I probably would have taken Archer just because pitching was so much more of a need than a LF and LFs are usually much easier to find. Obviously others are free to disagree. That’s just my opinion.
  25. That’s not the point. My point was that if they were willing to trade such talented prospects I think they should have done it to shore up the biggest hole on the team. Not to add to the biggest strength. That doesn’t mean it was a bad deal or that I don’t like Yelich. I just think it would have been a better idea to target pitching so we didn’t have to go all year relying on guys like Suter, Miley and/or Guerra.
