  1. I can't say for certain, but I think I remember during the wild card celebration in St. Louis that JJ was off to the side and I believe was holding a Coca-Cola cup. It seemed clear that he did not want to get in the middle of all the champagne and beer, and that probably wasn't an option in the closet also known as the visitor's clubhouse at Wrigley. You could tell during that celebration that people could hardly move in there. I also don't think people are jumping to conclusions, but it does seem fair to ask why the club wouldn't simply say he was being saved for a possible game on Tuesday. I get the competitive reasons for not saying it prior to or during the game, but to still have some secrecy about it after the game was over just seems a bit odd. Anyway, sincerely hope that is all there was to it, and that JJ will be a huge part of this postseason run just as he was during this fantastic regular season.
  2. Which is crazy to think about because it was going to be off the charts anyway coming home after the road trip he has had. Just a fantastic article. Loved the part about being on the plane with Mark and Braun and stopping to pick up Robin and Ueck. Like being a kid in a candy store times a million.
  3. In this season full of great moments, watching the broadcast with Ueck calling that two out nobody on four run rally capped off by the Yelich triple, in that game with such huge stakes, was the most enjoyable moment of the season for me (so far!)
  4. Played against Eric Hinske in the 1995 state tournament. Our pitcher struck him out.
  5. Don't forget Rick Dempsey! (How I instantly recognized his picture, and remembered that he played one season with the Brewers over 20 years ago, is either impressive or frightening)
  6. Broxton did it against Baltimore. Struck out for the first out and struck out for the third out. Crazy thing about the other two is that they made the first and second outs of the inning. Villar and Shaw made the first out, then eight straight got on, then they made the second out.
  7. My recollection is that they were pretty confident no one else was taking him in the top ten, and it was a chance they were willing to take.
  8. Not picking on you, but every time I have read a statement like this over the past 19 years it has driven me crazy. Dallas had the #6 pick, Milwaukee had picks #9 and #19. This trade was a pre-draft deal. If the Bucks did not agree to this deal, Dallas would have simply picked Dirk at #6. Dallas made the deal because the Bucks were willing to trade them #19 (which they flipped to Phoenix for Nash). There is no scenario in which the Bucks could have ended up with Dirk. They could not have "kept" him because he was never theirs. As soon as the deal was made prior to the draft, he always belonged to Dallas, and if the deal had never been made, he would have been picked by Dallas. The Bucks have made some incredibly dumb moves over the years, but this one should not be included since they really did not "trade away a future HOFer" which is how people tend to characterize this deal. The criticism they truly deserve from that draft? Paul Pierce was pick #10.
  9. Here is my problem with Villar, and it is something we all discussed at length last year. At this point you have to question both his baseball instincts as well as his ability to take coaching. The glaring example last year was getting thrown out at third so many times. So far this year, the test will be how quickly he learns from his mistakes in the field. After botching that double play on opening day, how many more times are we going to see him not set his feet when making the pivot? I think this play got overlooked last night, but early in the game a gapper was hit to the left field side with no one on base. There is literally nothing else for the 2B to do on that play but cover the base, but Villar wasn't there (he then laughed about it, which could lead to a completely different discussion - I'm sure his pitcher thought it was just hilarious that there was now a runner on second when they possibly could have gotten him out). I agree with everyone who is saying it is still relatively early in his development, particularly as a 2B, but it will be very interesting to monitor throughout this season which areas improve and which do not. That will tell us a lot about whether he is someone who is maturing and is able to adjust, or is someone who just may never "get it."
  10. After reading post #96, I have never been more sure of anything in my life that I'd shortly be reading what was written in post #97, and by whom it would be written.
  11. I don't recall what he did, but as a rookie Gregg Jeffries did something to anger his veteran teammates that resulted in them smashing every single one of his bats.
  12. I had those! Thought that one looked like Molitor so I wrote a "4" on the back in black marker. There was also an African-American version, and I wrote a "15" on the back of that one. 90% sure both were purchased at a game at County Stadium.
  13. Sadly it does have just a little to do with the Brewers. The 2011 trade was to St. Louis, and he was a member of the bullpen that LaRussa used rather masterfully in the NLCS. He appeared in five of the six games with 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K. Inherited three runners, none of them scored.
  14. I sat on the first-base side on Sunday and was watching his at-bats closely since it was the first time I had seen him in person. I definitely noticed that he was consistently out on his front foot. I like what they are doing with him, getting him used to the majors and seeing what they have in him. He has been as advertised in the field and has been fun to watch out there.
  15. I admit this is a completely cynical, judgmental take, but Juan doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will put in a ton of off-season work to get good at playing 1B.
  16. Time to make this thread a little more judgmental. Being bugged by friends/family that do this is one thing. Being in a position to do something about it in the moment and not stopping them is very different. I don't care if someone gets pissed, starts calling you names, or even gets physical, if someone you care about is drunk and you don't do everything you can do get those keys away from them, it's partially on you if they get hurt or they hurt someone else. Talk to them for as long as it takes, call their spouse or their parents, tackle them, or even call the cops, whatever it takes to make sure they don't get behind that wheel.
  17. Congratulations! It is going to be the hardest job you will ever have, but also the best job you will ever have. Regarding the car seat, if you have someone else put it in the first time make sure you pay attention to how it is done, and also keep the owner's manual handy. You'll have to be able to move it to different vehicles and the first couple times it can be tricky (but after you have done it a few times it is pretty easy). Also, don't buy a used car seat. Once they are in an accident they are garbage and there is no way of knowing what a used one has been through. Two things that made our lives so much easier right after the birth was having one of those special tiny bath tubs just for babies, and having 'sleep sacks' for pajamas. Those are the ones that zip all the way up but instead of having separate legs the bottom is just one big piece of material. Makes it so much easier to change a diaper in the middle of the night not having to stuff the little feet and legs back into the feet and legs of the pjs. One other piece of advice is to not be afraid to ask for help, especially during the first month. We kind of wanted to prove to others and ourselves that we could do it on our own and didn't really take any time for ourselves, which I'm sure made that first month harder than it had to be. Selfishly, I'd like to thank you for starting this thread. Our son was born seven years ago and we thought we weren't going to be able to have any more children. On this past Halloween we had the shock of a lifetime, finding out that we are pregnant and are due in July. Reading through this thread has helped me think through all the things we need to be thinking about too, since it has been a few years and we never thought we would have to think about this stuff again
  18. I believe HOF voters look at top 5 and top 10 MVP finishes, so a second place finish is still a significant accomplishment as it relates to his HOF chances. And a 9th place finish for Ramirez! After Prince left I thought it might be long time until we saw two Brewers in the top 10 again.
  19. My wife was an assistant district attorney for five years and had her life threatened several times. We had to implement the same measures you described numerous times. Scary.
  20. That's awesome, some of my favorite childhood memories are of me and my Dad going through his collection. The only thing he saved from growing up was his card collection, which spanned mostly from 1960-1966, with a couple nice ones from the mid-to-late 1950s mixed in. We had a lot of fun going to card shows completing his sets for 1960, 1961 and 1963, and used a lot of his doubles to trade for newer sets or cards we both really wanted (e.g. Yount rookie, Molitor rookie). Our only regret was trading a 1958 Ted Williams (his only one) for the 1987 Fleer set. Was close to even value then, not even close now I hope you have a blast going through them with your kids!
  21. I just watched the first 10 seconds of that video 12 times in a row to hear the roar of the crowd. The Brewers know what kind of support they have waiting for them at home, and WILL get this series back to Milwaukee.
  22. Two games in a row with an assist for Braun. That can only help his MVP push.
  23. After reading the first two sentences I was 100% sure there was going to be a "Brewer Fever" comment/joke in there somewhere http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. I was in the first row of the Loge level behind the Brewers dugout, and the sight of 80% of the Field level fans on the first base side throwing up the T as Plush came off the field was awesome. It was my five year-old son's first Brewer game yesterday. Except for trips to the bathroom, he stayed in his seat/on my lap for the entire game, which I never expected. The only issue was one of those bathroom trips occurred in the bottom of the 9th. If Kotsay's fly ball had gone out, there is no telling how many times in his life the story would be told of how his first Brewer game ended in a walk off HR and we were in the men's room at the time.
  25. Anyone notice that on Prince's sac fly Friday night, after he hit the ball he pointed to Nyjer at third as if to say "yo, there are less than two outs, make sure you're tagging up." If so, good to see a team leader making sure he is focused after admitting he didn't know the score or the inning even though "we got all the scoreboards!!"
