  1. Or, since they have him for four years, maybe they don't trade him.
  2. Would the Giants trade P Tyler Beede or Inf Christian Arroyo, plus C Aramis Garcia and a lottery ticket, for Braun? Would the Brewers do that?
  3. Thanks Dale - that makes the deal even more terrific, if Thames is the real deal. Which we should be closer to knowing by mid-season, after the second time through the division and all the adjustments teams and Thames have made. That would give us an incredible 1B option through 2020, well into the contending years, I'd say.
  4. Interesting idea. Funny thing is, if they're each doing that, then probably each side knows it. Which makes it both funny and absurd. Now if the Gigantes suddenly jump in (if they have enough to offer), things could get interesting...
  5. Much as I'd love the Brewers and Dodgers to make a good deal on Braun, if I'm LA in 2017 I'll plug Bellinger in LF and go with Puig in RF (OPS-ing 1.100 so far this year) and not have to spend a dime on Braun.
  6. Not positive on this, but I think I remember hearing that like Aoki's deal, the Brewer's deal with Thames was worded so that they would eliminate his arby years and he would be a free agent after the three-year deal was done. Edit: From Cot's Eric Thames 1b 3 years/$16M (2017-19), plus 2020 option 3 years/$16M (2017-19), plus 2020 club option signed by Milwaukee as a free agent 11/29/16 17:$4M, 18:$5M, 19:$6M, 20:$7.5M club option ($1M buyout) may earn additional $0.5M annually in performance bonuses assignment bonus if traded may not be optioned or assigned to minors without permission Milwaukee may not tender a contract to Thames and must release him at contract’s end Confusing, no? It says the Brewers have the club option for 2020, but then says they "must release him at contract's end." IE at the end of three years? Baseball Reference btw says that the 2020 deal is player's option: 2017 Contract Status: Signed thru 2019, 3 yrs/$16M (17-19) & 20 player option Service Time (01/2017): 1.063 • Arb Eligible: 2020 • Free Agent: 2022
  7. This is what Baseball Reference says about the Thames contract. I find it confusing. Is he eligible to walk after 2019, or after 2021? 2017 Contract Status: Signed thru 2019, 3 yrs/$16M (17-19) & 20 player option Service Time (01/2017): 1.063 • Arb Eligible: 2020 • Free Agent: 2022
  8. I just checked Thames's Baseball Reference page and it says, "Free Agent 2022." So, that means that with his arb years the Brewers could have Thames for FIVE YEARS including 2017? If that's the case, that's incredible value. If he's the real deal, look out.
  9. But if Bellinger has been playing OF in spring training and at the beginning of the AAA season, that would indicate the Dodgers would bring him up and play him there, right? And why wouldn't they? It would cost a whole lot less than Braunie.
  10. What makes you say that? We have reports from both Jon Morosi of MLB.com and the Boston Globe's Cafardo, plus the interview with Braun himself, to strongly suggest that talks are still ongoing. Curious as to why you say otherwise. Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports that the two sides are not currently discussing a trade. http://www.latimes.com/sports/mlb/la-sp-dodgers-report-20170416-story.html Thanks for that. Well, the beat writer for the Dodgers is certainly a better source for this than Morosi or Cafardo, sad to say. Maybe Braun's team planted this? Wonder how the rumor started. Unless somehow Morosi and Cafardo have better sources than Shaikin, or the Dodgers are somehow freezing Shaikin out, which seems doubtful. And it does seem that Bellinger could just take over in LF any time. Maybe the Braun trade ship has sailed. If so, too bad... Then again, if the Crew could somehow contend for the second wildcard this year, it'd be good to have Braun on the team.

  12. Who else throws a split outside of him and Guerra? Way to welcome the newcomer, TPlush. Geez! Anyway - AshleyP, glad to see you here. It does seem that Stearns likes to mine splitter guys - we'll see what Drake has in store. Enjoy the forum. The discussions can get pretty spirited.
  13. The Morosi article today on MLB.com makes me think that whatever we all think and argue, this trade may well happen, with a Giants-Dodgers bidding war a real possibility. Braun is remarkably candid about the prospects of a trade. Makes me think he is trying to build up his appeal as a good-citizen ballplayer, after all that has happened. http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/224009890/two-trade-deadlines-approaching-for-ryan-braun/
  14. My other than that, what? comment was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek, because I thought the previous answer was pretty convincing. Darn that elusive sarcasm font!
  15. The fact that the Padres are a bad rebuilding club with no chance to contend in the West and zero need for a 19M a year 33 year old veteran outfielder. But other than that, what?
  16. Gotta agree with that. Plus, Puig could have been flipped for significantly more than what we'd get back for Braun now, once the prospects are ready. Too bad they didn't just do the deal. I appreciate Stearns's patience but here he missed an opportunity.
  17. I could see making a claim if he were a true utility guy. But it seems he only plays OF. Would rather have DeJesus or Sogard.
  18. Yeah, adambr2, I'm sure that's right. Just felt like going out on a limb.
  19. I will boldly say that Wren makes the team and that the Brewers find a trading partner for Gennett or even Hernan for the right price. The other day when someone asked Counsell about Wren, he said "it's March 19," implying that many things can still happen.
  20. I still think there's a lot of room for improvement in Santana's defense, and he seems to have a great arm. As someone said there are a ton of moving pieces and it's possible that any one of those currently in the OF, and possibly any of the prospects, minus Brinson, could be traded in the next year. It's fun to speculate on what the OF might look like in 2018 or 2019, but that's what it is - speculation. And IMHO Santana staying in RF could most def be one of those scenarios.
  21. That's why some serious salary relief, to the tune of $20M, which the Brewers can afford, would help them land better prospects.
  22. Or maybe we should curse you for having the read the same arguments made over and over and over Good point, that. Maybe I should go sit in the corner with a golden dunce hat. Just let me have a TV, I can't miss the Packers game today.
  23. OK I don't want to be presumptuous or anything but as the instigator of this topic lo these many months ago, should I get some special recognition, like a gold watch or at least a party hat, on the occasion of this thread having reached 1000 posts? Maybe some Frank Charles organ music? Retro stirrups for the old pinstripe uniforms? A frozen malted milk? Beuhler? Anybody? On the other hand, I'd settle for a good return for Ryan Braun.
  24. OK so I'm not the first person to suggest this but haven't seen much discussion of it either. Given that Stearns is accumulating very high-upside middle infielders (Dubon, Diaz) who will soon be in the mid-to-upper minors, what's the chance Braun and Villar go to the Dodgers (or somewhere else) in a blockbuster? I think the likelihood of that is low, but let's say for a moment it happens. What could the Brewers get back?
