  1. Curious to know: Do players who truly mashed in Korea (like Thames is doing) tend to do well at the MLB level? Is there a precedent for past players in the Korean league, something that would make signing Thames a wise choice -- or at least, a reasonable gamble?
  2. NO KIDDING! Totally forgot Hader. Yes, I took out Ortiz and put Hader in there.
  3. This is fun. I'll play, too. Gone: Braun, Thornburg (for a serious haul), Gennett, Maldonado, Carter, Nelson, Nieuwenhuis, Anderson ,Torres, Garza Arrived: Puig, McCarthy, DeLeon, Bellinger, awesome 3B prospect ready to slot in, others in AA/AAA, possibly including a top C prospect Lineup: Villar 2B Broxton CF Puig Santana Bellinger Awesome 3B prospect Arcia Susac P SP (by mid-2017 -- note the jump from AA, which seems to be part of Stearns' emerging plan): Guerra DeLeon Davies Woodruff Hader (edit! Not Ortiz yet) Pen: Peralta (closer) Knebel Blazek (rebuild his value) Suter Barnes Jungman Cravy Bench: Perez (super-utility) Wren Pinto Piña Rivera
  4. So, Puig may have rebuilt his value, at least somewhat. His September/October numbers include a .338 OBP and .900 OPS. With four homers/11 RBIs in 57 ABs. Those are pretty good numbers. And with at least some reports on his recent good behavior (minus the Bumgarner confrontations) , might he be more of a centerpiece than a salary dump/throwin in any deal? How might this affect the discussions between Stearns and the Dodgers? Guess we'll find out in the next few months.
  5. I think it's worth pointing out that Puig has a .961 OPS since his callup -- sure, only 46 ABs, but still, that's pretty good, and maybe he is turning some kind of corner and won't be just a throw-in, whether we all like it or not.
  6. So, let's say the trade is completed, Braun (or Braun + a reliever not named Thornburg) for Puig, McCarthy, plus De Leon and a lower level prospect. And let's say that Puig really does bounce back, big time. Not hard to imagine given his age. This could be a pretty decent lineup, say by July next year: Villar 2B Broxton (Brinson) CF Puig RF Perez 3B Carter (or someone better) 1B Santana LF Arcia SS Susac/Piña C Rotation: Guerra Davies De Leon Hader Woodruff (Other #5 starter candidates: Jungman, Suter, Wilkerson, McCarthy. Peralta and Thornburg are the awesome 8th and 9th inning guys. Or if Thornburg is traded for a haul, Peralta just becomes the closer.) Traded for prospects: Braun, Gennett, Maldonado, Torres, Nelson, Anderson, Garza (if possible) Depending on how the kids do, this could be a .500 team or better, I think.
  7. Great thread. OK so I'm going to cheat slightly and say what I think the Brewers 25-man might look like on July 1 2017. This scenario is based on the idea that Stearns & Co are going to want to have some of their pitching prospects skip Colorado Springs. It also assumes a Braun trade (possibly for Puig + in a matter of hours) and Gennett and Thornburg trades. SP: Guerra Davies Hader Ortiz Wilkerson Batting order: Villar 2B Broxton CF Perez 3B Puig RF Carter 1B Brinson LF Arcia SS Susac C Bullpen: Wily Peralta (closer) Knebel (setup) Torres Rowen Barnes Magnifico Jungman (long relief) Bench: Santana (supersub in LF/RF/1B, with Broxton sitting some and Brinson moving to CF - in this scenario Santana plays maybe 2/3 of the time) Piña Wren Rivera Rule 5 OBP Monster, experiment #2
  8. Not sure what you mean - I don't think the Brewers' price tag will go down at all during the off season. If anything, it would go up, right? Plus, the Dodgers could really use Braun NOW, in the middle of a tight pennant race and for the postseason.
  9. People, people! Life's too short to quibble over whether someone read your posts carefully or not! I say again: Now, levity aside: Corey Ray went 3 for 4 last night. His August OBP is .350 and OPS is .856. Walk rate for August is 12 percent. Could it be the young man, after skipping two minor league levels, is putting it together in a very difficult hitting environment? It would seem so.
  10. There seems to be a consensus that if Braun is traded -- this coming winter, or less likely, this month -- the logical choice would be to the Dodgers. They seem like a good fit, especially this year. But it's not clear they're interested. If they were, Stearns has made it clear (including to the Braves) that this would be a prospect deal, not a salary dump. So. Would the Dodgers part with Cody Bellinger + for Braun? Perhaps Bellinger and a high pitching prospect? And what if the Brewers added Tyler Thornburg? (That deal would almost certainly have to be in the winter.) Probably it's too much to ask for Bellinger and Urias for Braun and Thornburg. But what about Bellinger and Jose DeLeon (or one of Yadier Alvarez/Frankie Montas), plus a lottery pick? Would you do a deal like that? Would the Dodgers? And as for Bellinger himself -- how much would you expect from him ultimately?
  11. Agreed... but Perez was a Melvin guy. Got him after Detroit released him early in the 2015 season.
  12. If 10/5 status means literally the 10th anniversary of Braun's debut, which I think it does, that means the Brewers would have until next May 24th to trade him to one of the teams on his no-trade clause without his permission. Which means of course that they could do something over the winter, if they found the right match. Though as others have pointed out, given the other issues, it would seem Dodgers or no one.
  13. Brewer Prospects had a tweet also asking why, and showing a video of his groundout, after which he was pulled. Not clear if he pulled something as he wasn't visibly limping but he wasn't running hard either. https://twitter.com/BrewerProspect/status/765059831246061568
  14. I mean, yes, it's especially ironic for that song to blare when Chapman comes in, but under what circumstances would it be appropriate to play that song to a stadium filled or even half filled with people?
  15. "...Think Stearns may have asked for Rangers to challenge him perhaps..." An interesting theory, especially given that he went to Spokane the day after the trade. That would make the trade quite a haul for the Brewers. Though it's nice to see Luc tearing it up in Texas. Six homers already, in 11 games.
  16. Every single prospect could bomb...That's the problem with prospects. Yes, every prospect could bomb, but Gallo's numbers in AAA compared to other legit prospects who have done well at the MLB level, as others have pointed out, provide real cause for concern.
  17. Gallo - I'm afraid he'll be a bust. Can't manage .250 in AAA - or even .200 last year. And has struck out 9 times in 14 ABs with the Rangers this year. Looks completely overmatched. Let's stay with the inexpensive version of an all-or-nothing slugger, Chris Carter, and not spend our Lucroy capital on a prospect who may well bomb.
  18. This seems like exactly what it is boiling down to. His goal is to maximize his free agent value and he has a lot more perceived value to teams as a full-time catcher than a C/DH/1B. Given the Cleveland beat writer's source -- that Lucroy's claim of not being guaranteed playing time at catcher in 2017 -- I think this is a matter of Lucroy doing damage control. I think it really undermines his straight-shooter image. Hypocritical of him, IMO.
  19. And this - #3 tweet from Paul Hoynes: Source: If Tribe was going to offer SS Chang, C Mejia and OF Allen, it wasn't going to do it for parttime catcher. Lucroy was going to start
  20. These two tweets from Indian writer Paul Hoynes make the most sense of all the explanations and makes Lucroy look really really bad, IMO: #1: Lucroy, agent wanted Indians to decline his 2017 ext., making him a FA after this yr. Tribe felt prospects were too high a price for rental #2: Source: Says Lucroy's reported claim that he nixed deal bec. he wasn't guaranteed starting job bogus based on talent Tribe offer Mil.
  21. My favorite comment so far. Like any NFL draft, we really won't know the outcome for a couple of years at least.
  22. Mejia at the plate for the Hillcats, AB #2 for the night
  23. If Mejia was replaced they'd likely have another name as DH in the box score by now, I'd suspect.
  24. About the Sabathia trade -- Wasn't the once-bright prospect Angel Salome on the list for Cleveland to choose from? As I recall he seemed like a can't-miss prospect -- .in 2008 he had a 973 OPS in Huntsville, the old Brewers AA team. I was hoping he wouldn't be included in the CC deal, and as I recall he was passed over in favor of Brantley, who Tom Haudricourt wrote was considered to have the ceiling of a 4th outfielder. Funny how things changed. Salome meantime flamed out, apparently due in part to some emotional issues.
