  1. Pina may be a "nobody" but he had a great year at AAA last year, held his own despite limited playing time and played average defense in the big leagues, and is having a decent enough spring (small sample size, pretty low OPS for such a high AVG so far but still, again, holding his own). Pina is a DS acquisition with no options. He's as good as on the 25-man roster, they just can't say that. As to whether or not he'll be the starter, who's to say? I think the real roster battle is between Bandy and Susac, and Bandy clearly has the edge on that one due to his performance so far. The question will be if Bandy is good enough to take the everyday catcher's role or if he'll backup Pina to start the year. Wouldn't surprise me if the battle continues past opening day and we see split playing time between whichever 2 it is until one distinguishes themselves.
  2. So there's no way to clear his 40-man spot at this point without letting his service clock run? Seems kinda dumb.
  3. Can Houser be put on the 60-day DL AFTER being optioned, or is he now going to take up a spot on the 40-man all year? Seems like a waste of a spot that could be used on someone else.
  4. I honestly couldn't be higher on either of these two guys. Broxton looked great in center today, and his approach at the plate seems consistent with where he was at at the end of last year. He could be our best player this year. Santana seems to get lost in the shuffle right now with other flashier prospect names like Brinson and Arcia getting thrown out there, but I think he's going to have a great year this year and make it really tough on the Brewers as to when and how to bring up Brinson.
  5. 1. Counsell doesn't have the final say on roster decisions. 2. Nieuwenhuis has a split contract this year which pays much less if he's in the minors, so they must have at least considered that he might not make the team. The question is who you'd want to be our 5th OF instead.
  6. Turns out if the difference is between playing and not playing, Weeks doesn't much care. If the difference is between getting paid and not getting paid, apparently he'll give any position a try.
  7. Adam McCalvyVerified account‏@AdamMcCalvy 6m6 minutes ago Upcoming Brewers probables: Today: Guerra Tuesday: Davies Wednesday: Anderson Thursday: Garza (I think) Friday: Nelson Peralta already pitched to prep for the WBC, so hard to say where he'd slot in if he's doing well (probably in place of Nelson), but I think if I counted correctly and these guys pitch every 5th day, this would line up perfectly for Guerra to start on opening day. There's obviously plenty of room for adjustment in the next month, but this has to at least somewhat represent what Counsell is thinking for the rotation.
  8. To be fair to Villar also, it's not like he made this decision in a vacuum. I'm sure his agent has spreadsheets and data for stuff like this showing what a player of his caliber would make in those 3 arbitration years plus in whatever FA years he would have to give up if he continued to play as well as he did last year, and I'm sure it's well over what he would be paid in this deal. That said, $20M (or even the $10M he's likely to see after taxes and agent fees) is seriously life changing money and I'd have real difficulty turning it down if it were me. So many talented athletes have lost future millions due to injuries that stopped their careers before they ever really started, I'd hate to see that happen to Villar.
  9. I think they typically don't gun the pitchers in the first week or two of ST because they don't want them to over exert themselves.
  10. Scooter gets two outs in the 1st inning today in left field, then came up and hit a double. [sarcasm]New opening day left fielder? Who could possibly take his spot with the way he's been playing.[/sarcasm]
  11. 1B/3B are offense-first positions, they require that players there be better hitters than at other positions (typically). The reason they don't play other positions is because they aren't good enough defenders, not because they can't hit. I'm not saying any of these guys is going to be a better hitter than Broxton in CF, but the reason they aren't playing CF isn't because they aren't good enough hitters. Having more than 3 people to play 2 positions in the infield is probably a good idea.
  12. I personally think this is a mistake for any player who isn't a slam dunk absolute all star to turn down an early extension offer like this. Pro sports is a fickle profession, and you could be out on your ass tomorrow, and I think the security of knowing you aren't playing for your life anymore would really help take a lot of weight off a player's shoulders. Then again, to be successful in the MLB you have to have shockingly high amounts of confidence anyways, so I'm not really in a position to say what's going on in Villar's head. Obviously I would've preferred that he take this deal, but Villar probably would've been viewed as leaving a ton of money on the table if he took a deal that pays him less per year than Eric Thames.
  13. Someone literally just asked Haudricourt if any of them would get reps at 1B and Tom said he didn't think so, which seems odd to me.
  14. I'd be surprised if they just let Pina go after keeping him on the 40-man this long and Stearns himself trading for him. If he was a Melvin acquisition I'd get it, but Stearns doesn't seem likely to just give up on him when he had a great year at AAA last year and showed that he could stick in the majors in limited playing time last year (at the very least, he'd be a quality backup catcher and pinch hitter, and I think he could stick as the starter potentially). I'd say Pina is near a lock to make the opening day roster even though they'd never say that publicly. Susac seems most likely to me to be the 2nd catcher on the OD roster just because I think he has more upside than Bandy, but it will probably be whoever performs better in ST. Competition is good for young guys. Having 3 capable catchers and only 2 slots is a good thing.
  15. Players to be named later aren't typically agreed upon by both teams at a later date. For Manny Pina in the K-Rod deal, I believe he was always the player Stearns wanted, but he was a PTBNL because Stearns wanted to make sure he wasn't selected in the Rule 5 draft first. With Ryan Cordell, he was coming back from injury and I think the Brewers wanted to see some signs that he was going to heal and come back from injury before committing to him. He never did come back from injury last year but I guess Stearns saw enough that he was still interested. We lost Michael Brantley in the CC Sabathia trade because we made the playoffs that year, and if that happened, then Brantley would be the PTBNL, otherwise it would've been someone lesser (can't remember if that was made public who that was). So basically, there are various rules that could apply to a PTBNL. There's a couple guys on a list somewhere, and we'll be getting one of those based on some metric I would guess (maybe if Thornburg starts the year healthy and in the pen, we get a better player? Health could be a concern for him). Maybe if Thornburg blows out his arm in ST, we only get $100. Could be a lot of things. I'm honestly surprised there's a PTBNL at all in that deal, it seems like we got pretty fair value for Thornburg with the 3 guys we got (especially excited about Dubon).
  16. Kinda missed that I hadn't included a lefty. Cravy/Suter/Lopez/Magnifico/Jungmann all have at least one option left (I think this is the last option year for Cravy/Jungmann). I would guess that's working pretty heavily against all 5 of these guys starting the year in the bullpen, even though some of them performed pretty well at the end of last year (Cravy/Suter notably). Blazek/Knebel/Marinez are out of options, so if we're just putting together a bullpen based on our ability to keep as many of these guys in our organization as possible to start the year (which is probably wise for a non-contending team), then I'd say the bullpen looks like this: Feliz, Knebel, Torres, Barnes, Marinez, Blazek, Milone Keeping Barnes in there even though he has options. You could add Chamberlain to that list instead, but that seems like a waste. Better off keeping Barnes and seeing if you can get Chamberlain to AAA. There should be some interesting decisions made with our rotation/bullpen at the major league level and in AAA to start the year. There's a lot of talent and potential there, and I'm sure it'll all sort itself out based on who is performing, but right now it's kind hard to tell. This is why I love Spring Training!
  17. Very excited about Dubon this year. Do we think he'll start in AAA? How much more does he have to learn at AA, it seems like he pretty much killed it there, even if it was only for 60 games. It's not like our upper minors system is overwhelmed with middle infield prospects either (he and Rivera can split time at SS/2B maybe?). Hoping in August/September he comes up and can be another Hernan Perez for us.
  18. I've been thinking the same thing lately. If he has an impressive ST, it'll be hard to keep him out of the bullpen I think. Haudricourt said during his last Q&A, and I would agree, that Feliz/Knebel/Torres/Barnes/Marinez all seem like locks for the bullpen, which only leaves two spots open. He also mentioned, and I agree, that if Blazek is healthy he's more or less a lock too. So it's certainly possible that Lopez takes that final spot, it'd be over whoever doesn't make the rotation out of ST (side note: I really think Milone is going to have to impress big time in order to make the team, we just have too many guys and not enough spots and he's not at all a priority). That said, if he's as impressive as he was in winter ball, they're going to have a tough decision to make. I like Lopez as the long reliever out of the pen to start the year and first backup in case of injury in the rotation. Then let him maybe prove himself in higher leverage situations if he succeeds there (we've had success with that strategy with Thornburg and again last year with Marinez). With the amount of competition for spots in the rotation and bullpen this year, I'd find it hard to believe that we can't put together a roster of 12 pitchers better than last year, even with missing Thornburg/Jeffress/Smith. There's lots of young talent, especially in the bullpen, ready to take over where those guys left off.
  19. Brewers Record: 78-84 Playoffs: No Brewers MVP: Santana Brewers Cy Young: Davies Brewers ROY: Pina First Player Traded: Guerra Surprise Player: Pina Disappointing Player: Shaw World Series: Dodgers over Red Sox
  20. Are we looking at this the wrong way? Could we be looking at an 8-man bullpen instead of a 6-man rotation, with the starters who don't make the rotation being used as long relief on whatever day they're needed in that role, instead of slotting them in to pitch every 6th day? Just a thought, but it still leaves us with a pretty short bench. Still thinking either injury or trade will fix this for us.
  21. Based on Stearns's comment in Haudricourt's recent interview, it sounds like they will be making case-by-case decisions on whether pitchers will ever pitch in Colorado Springs this year, and he also won't be afraid to call up a pitcher directly from AA. I think this will help us put together better predictions for what pitchers will start where at the beginning of the season. For example, we can probably infer from this that Jungmann and Lopez will never see Colorado Springs again. So based on that, my guess for the start of the year would be something like: AAA: Hader, Woodruff, Wilkerson, Burgos, Wang AA: Ortiz, Lopez, Jungmann, Ortega, Perrin A+: Bickford (after suspension), Ponce, Diplan, Medeiros, T Williams, Kirby (with Peralta, D Williams, and maybe Burkhalter going multiple innings in relief) A: Burnes, Supak, Pennington, Yamamoto, Desguin(?) There's a bit of a logjam at A+, especially when Bickford comes back, but chances are that Bickford moves up to AA after re-establishing himself post-suspension, and also the possibility that Taylor Williams gets off to a hot start and gets promoted to AA quickly. Most of those A+ prospects underperformed there last year in a pitcher-friendly league, so it'll be interesting to see who continues to burn out and who turns it around. I'm guessing I forgot about a few guys in the listing above, but there's definitely talent at every level that I'm excited to see develop this year.
  22. I'm guessing this isn't new about Missaki, and that the TJ he underwent is the same one we've already known about, but maybe he had TJ prior that at some point too? Sorry, I didn't read this whole article, maybe they make that clear.
  23. Let's say you have a 6-man rotation AND a 7-man bullpen: Guerra, Davies, Peralta, Garza, Nelson, Anderson Feliz, Knebel, Torres, Barnes, Marinez, Blazek/Milone/Jungmann/Cravy/Lopez (take your pick of 2 of those guys, the other 5 seem relatively safe to me) Then you've got: Pina/Susac/Bandy (2 out of those 3) Thames, Villar, Arcia, Shaw, Perez Braun, Broxton, Santana, Nieuwenhuis And 1 more spot if I'm doing my math correctly. Probably someone who can play some 1B so give it to Aguilar for now I guess (unless one of Pina/Susac/Bandy can play some 1B, which would certainly help). I'm ok with this. Nieuwenhuis can play all over, and Perez can too. The only issue here is in case of injury to a position player, we'd probably have to make a move. I'm still holding out hope we find a trade partner for Guerra or Garza before the season starts. Here's hoping they both look good in ST.
  24. Sounds like Carter has offers in the 2.5-3M range already but is looking for more money. I wouldn't want to pay him more than that.
  25. I more or less exclusively use StubHub to buy Brewers tickets. I'm usually up in the Terrace Reserved section (which I actually really like) and you can consistently get those tickets for $10, sometimes less. Season tickets are a waste of money, in my opinion.
