Considering the difficulty of remaining schedules and the fact that ST Louis has dominated the losing teams that we keep flailing against the division looks close to sealed.
I remember when Counsell was great at playing matchups with the bullpen and used Hader in the 7th or 8th inning when the top hitters were due up and now you can almost predict exactly who is coming in and the over reliance on Milner lately when he's been pitching horribly makes no sense.
Stearns has done a very bad job starting at the last trade deadline through the offseason and now this deadline was a big fail. As for Counsell his performance has been nothing short of awful.
Counsell has to take a ton of the blame for the way the season is going. His refusal to play Hiura against most righties and his bullpen decisions have been awful. Might be time to stop using Milner in high leverage situations or pitching Rogers against the likes of Goldschmidt and Arenado with the game on the line.
Its too late since they've played most of their games against the terrible teams. They are going to have to win a lot against the good teams to make up for this awful play against the likes of the scrubs, reds, and pirates.
I'd feel a lot better if they were dominated by the top teams like the Dodgers but missing out on the playoffs becase of their inept play against the bottom of the league is infuriating.
Respectable showing against the Dodgers will all be thrown down the drain if we don't win at least 2 out of 3 this weekend. If this team is going to get into the playoffs they need to dominate the bottom feeders which they sure as heck haven't accomplished lately.
What exactly does it really mean to be a league average bat when around half or more of the teams are not even competitive. I think being league average may have meant something years ago when you didn't have so many uncompetitive teams but since our competition is the few teams trying to win being average at something means little to nothing.
How long does Hiura have to keep performing until the unsustainable label disappears. He has been the most productive hitter on this team yet many don't want him in the lineup which makes no sense at all.
If you listened to Attanasio talk about the trade I think the disconnect is between him and boy wonder who cant leave town soon enough. Ownership should just let the distracted GM go back home since he clearly stopped caring or just became stupid this and last trade deadline.
Stearns doesn't care about the long term future of the franchise. He is just waiting it out till he can go home and run the muts. Overall Stearns has done an admirable job but his last two trade deadlines were disastrous.
The Hader trade totally demoralized the team. I was in favor of moving him since I didn't think this team was a true contender but only if we received a top package of prospects which clearly did not happen. Between the deadline moves and non moves for offense as well as the 1-5 week against trash opponents the season is clearly over.
You and in particular one other guy have made your point about Castellanos and I admit to being wrong about him but that doesn't change the fact that McCutchen isn't any good either or the fact that Hiura should be the DH against all righties and probably every day regardless of who is pitching.
