  1. "We're gonna be getting rid of these people here. First, Mr. Samir Naga... Naga... Naga... not gonna work here anymore, anyway!" Or for a more recent example, you could fake fire her ala Michael Scott. In reality though, nobody enjoys letting people go and there certainly isn't anybody out there that wants to get fired. If it makes it any easier, just remember that it's part of your job and that at the end of the day, you (as a manager) would be the one underperforming if you didn't do it.
  2. http://media.movieweb.com/news/03.2006/louieB.jpg These are the only two people in the world with the ability to do this, and one of them is dead.
  3. I did this when I was a kid as well. My reward was the opportunity to stand on the pitchers mound next to Brewer legend Brad Woodall. It was sponsored by Gander Mountain back then, and one was required to write a little paragraph about "why you love the Brewers". Perhaps a sign of the times that it's now sponsored by a fast food joint and you earn it by eating frozen custard..http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  4. Which of course wasn't even what I said..the picture is of Hughes being hacked, and my quote was "I don't remember a foul being called on Curry while Hughes was on the floor..." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The silver lining through all this is that I'll officially be ready for Brewers season. It'll take me just about until the opener to get over this one..
  5. Well, i'm obviously not going to change your mind, but you're the only Badgers fan in a couple forums i browsed that thought the refs played even a very minor role in the loss, much less a big one. I was going to check out Scout.com, i'm curious to see if i'll see a single fan upset with the refs. I didn't feel the officiating was bad. The travel was pretty obvious IMO, but in this particular game, the play on the floor was the determining factor of the outcome. But interesting to see the following photo on the front page of JSOnline. I don't remember a foul being called on Curry while Hughes was on the floor..if that's the case, how was this not a foul? http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/badger/img/mar08/thughes328.jpg
  6. That stretch where UW got caught up chucking 3 pointers and not getting inside..a guy like Hughes that can penetrate and create his own shot (albeit poor ones at times) really would have helped.
  7. He's an employee who was paid to do his work. Now he's a former employee. I have mixed feelings about the immediate removal of the signage, but he by no means was being "used" during his time with the Giants.
  8. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. Anyways, tickets for the regular season opener were hard to come by and pretty pricey, but I made it to the exhibition game between the Red Sox and the Hanshin Tigers. It's hard to take pictures from the second to last row in the upper deck (approx price: $30), but..Lew Ford sighting! http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc117/ccbrew/P1010021.jpg
  9. Coincidentally, I downloaded Civilization II a couple of days ago and have been partying like it's 1995 for several nights in a row.
  10. I didn't expect team highlights, but I expected the scores. (I think sports coverage tends to be better WITH the scores.) But Japanese coverage of MLB games really included ONLY shots and descriptions of the Japanese player. Nothing else. Once Ohka was out of the game in the 6th inning, the game might as well have been sucked away in a vortex. Who cares who won. Ohka pitched today in America... Here he is. That's it. And it was the same for most of the Japanese players in the MLB. This isn't true. I apologize for being curt, but I haven't ever seen a highlight where they don't mention the score or flash it on the screen..and I've been here for Nomo-mania through now. The player-based coverage only really is true for the 10 minute sports section of a typical news broadcast, and there isn't really a Japanese equivalent of ESPN and SportsCenter. The emphasis is definitely on how the individual players performed and you'll rarely see how the teams scored their non-Japanese-player-related runs, but to construe it as the fans not caring about the teams is not right. I do agree that it's frustrating when you hear the typical 10 second news clip: "Akinori Otsuka and the San Diego Padres played the Milwaukee Brewers today, and Otsuka threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 0 runs and 0 hits . The Padres lost the game 7-2." This pretty much sums up what brought me to this very site. I understand the passion people have for Opening Day, and the time of game certainly could have been better to accommodate U.S. fans - especially those on the west coast. But like others have said, it sure beats the alternative of trying to do this midseason. The benefit of playing games here are both tangible and intangible.
  11. The answer would be close to zero..all live games on mlb.tv are blacked out in Japan. Perhaps I'm biased because I was able to watch it in prime time, but I don't really think it's a big deal - it's two games in a very long season. The teams agreed to take part, and there were plenty of incentives provided to them to do so. In case you're wondering, they've expanded the "Red Sox Nation" membership card program to Japan as well..http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/indifferent.gif For what it's worth, the Japanese league is getting a raw deal out of this too. The Pacific League season is already underway and hardly anybody has taken notice. Edit: And perhaps the most ironic part of this whole deal is that the game was nationally televised here in Japan but nobody outside the dome got to see the ending. The live broadcast ended at 11pm, which was right as things got interesting in extra innings..
  12. Recent (Dec 07) UW-Madison SoB graduate. Best of luck to you guys/gals applying to the program http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. This will all be over within the next 24 hrs - neither the team nor MLB can afford the PR nightmare. It's $40,000 a head, right? They'll pay up.
  14. 1. 13-Siena 2. 10-Davidson 3. 1st Round 4. Final Four 5. UNC, UCLA, Texas, UW 6. UNC over UCLA Upset Special that I don't have the courage to actually put in my bracket: 14-Cornell over 3-Stanford Edit: Davidson is a 10-seed. Edit 2: As reflected in my bf.net bracket, I now have Marquette going to the Sweet Sixteen after upsetting Stanford.. Edit 3: Not to mention 10-Arizona moving on after beating West Virginia..and in a decision I'll surely regret later, defeating Duke in the 2nd round.
  15. Cool. Next time you see him you can ask him what on earth is an "Oscar-worthy" catch..
  16. I'm sure there are a bunch. Mike Doss 1997 & 1998 Canton McKinley HS (1997 USA Today HS National Champion) 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes 2006 Indianapolis Colts Jeremy Shockey 1998 Ada HS (lost in state championship) 2001 Miami Hurricanes 2008 New York Giants
  17. Thanks for the insight. I had actually already accepted the trade but was feeling a case of 'buyer's remorse' and needed confirmation that I made an ok decision http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. I have mixed feelings about Gregg as well..it's hard to ignore how the closer's job became his by default last season, but he did get the job done.. Gagne has to be one of the lowest drafted closer-on-a-winning-team in recent memory. Some of the names going before him were surprising - I guess people are quite scared/scarred by his Boston tenure.
  18. Another iTunes question: Anyone know of a program that will 'fix' song/album information? I'm borderline OCD when it comes to getting the appropriate letters capitalized, album covers, correct track numbers..etc. But doing it manually is quite the painstaking process..
  19. General fantasy baseball question (not keeper) - I've always been an advocate for not having too many players from the same team on my squad. I suppose it's not as bad of a problem in 5x5 leagues compared to weekly head-to-head, but my reasons to avoid teammates include sharing of RBIs, tough matchups on the same day, etc. Keeping in mind that I already have Prince Fielder and Corey Hart in my starting roster and Bill Hall on the bench, the following trade has fallen in my lap: Brian Roberts Jason Isringhausen for Ryan Braun Kevin Gregg I cringed when picking Isringhausen because he's bound to get hurt and the Cardinals arn't going to give him many opps this season. I'm covered in the SB category with a specialist in Willy Taveras and others. I know it's hard to judge a trade in a vacuum, but would you ever decline a trade simply for the sake of diversification?
  20. Carbon monoxide - the odorless killer. Make sure you have a detector for that as well.
  21. This arrest really puts a damper on his otherwise stellar career.
  22. For study abroad purposes, I say Belgium. I know several UW people that have gone to Australia for a semester and while they say with unanimity that it was a great time, there was not much studying involved. Depends on what you're after, I suppose.
  23. Pretty neat. Looks like something straight out of the movie "Day after Tomorrow".
