He's very very valuable with his odd style going through the lineup 1 time. He's a 2+ IP reliever. Honestly, if they go with Houser and Peralta in the rotation I almost expect the piggy back idea that we've never seen to come into play. Woodruff Anderson Lindblom treated normally. Houser 4-5 /Suter 2-3 Peralta 4-5 /Lauer 2-3 Leaves Hader Phelps Claudio Black and a random until Knebel is back. Lauer and Suter can pitch 1 IP days here and there behind the starter 1-2-3. But you can toggle them so that they line up for a longer stint with Houser and Peralta. I honestly don't know why more teams don't just schedule it this way. 3 IP x 32 (160/5) = 96 innings in a year. You give Suter and Lauer 3 innings every 5 starts and they carry a lot of weight in the pen without being over taxed. It'd save your pen a lot of wear and tear. Houser/Lauer Peralta/Suter styles are about as opposite as they get.
-
Well it's 100% not going to happen. It's about as relevant as saying, Erceg and Arica are so hot right now. How can you consider taking them out of the lineup!
-
What depth does he actually provide with this current team build? He's mediocre in CF as is Garcia. He hits LHP better despite being a lefty and every single OF we have other than Yelich hits LHP better than RHP. He's not a defensive replacement vs Yelich in LF or Garcia in RF. If you play him vs RHP he's pretty broken, so whats the point? You want Cain Braun Garcia and Yelich in vs LHP. Broxton is at least speed and defense plus. Taylor will be back shortly enough to be the injury call up if someone goes down. He's a decent player who doesn't fit.

Who really cares if Peralta and Burnes were in the rotation in April last season? Chase Anderson didn't start a game until April 20th By then MKE had seen 4 starts by Burnes a 10.7 ERA and 5 earned in 3.1 ip vs the Cardinals. A 6-3 loss. Also lost to the Cubs 14-8 allowing 7 runs in 5 ip. 4 starts by Peralta a 7.13 ERA and 4 earned in 3 ip vs the Cardinals. A 9-5 loss. Also lost to the Angels 11-8 allowing 7 runs in 3.1 ip. No biggie. It's 162 games. You can punt early in the season. Those games won't matter at seasons end, you have time to make it up. Wait, we lost 2 to the Cardinals in April in terrible pitcher outings. They won by 2 games? Doesn't that mean 1 of those going to MKE would have forced a tie?

I’m dead set on Houser not being a starter so obviously I agree here. Also a very weird trade made if he’s not given a chance to be in your rotation. That's the other reason it's fascinating despite other's stating its not. You traded Davies for Anderson and a guy who has pitched 52 starts in the MLB who you don't see as a starter? Your going to go with a guy who has performed worse than him every step of the way because he has a nice duo of FBs? 18 starts. 4.57. 4.5 innings per start vs 52 starts. 4.43. 5 innings per start. 5.11 last year. And younger by 2 years. I'd rather have Davies than Lauer and Anderson if you're going to make Lauer a reliever. Why trade a good cheap pitcher for a guy who you don't see as a starter and a OF prospect who flew up the rankings for a middle infielder who is loosing his prospect luster?
-
Houser locked in over Lauer is a fascinating thought for someone to have. Lauer has been a better starter every single step of the way and his FB cutter curve is all trending in the right direction.

Am I nuts for thinking this? Woodruff and Burnes
TJseven7 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Has a splitter and a curve. They didn't do very well last year but he has them. He had an incredibly high 4 seam vs 2 seam ratio last year. The 2 seam was less than his curve and splitter. -
Arica and Gyorko I’d guess. Lester will be the Cubs OD starter. If it's a lefty its Gyorko and Sogard. Sogard has reverse-ish splits. (basically even vs RHP and LHP but more power vs LHP) People are over reacting about SS. Holt is going to play A LOT at 3b. They paid him and Sogard the most of the 4 healthy options. Those are your platoon leads. Only guy who can change that is Urias. Urias had wild splits last year but they don't show up in the minors so I'd expect him and Sogard to split SS without much platoon based reason. Sogards pretty even with more power vs LHP. Urias is fairly even in the minors but leans towards LHP. I think they split that spot, not platoon it. Holt/Gyorko is the 3b platoon now. As long as Gyorko is healthy I don't see Sogard playing there a lot. I expect Sogard to be the every day SS until Urias is back.

Am I nuts for thinking this? Woodruff and Burnes
TJseven7 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't agree with this. He can lead with his slider, he can throw his slider for strikes. Keeping his FB down is what got him clobbered. He can work the majority of his FBs up and his sliders down and it'll still work. That's also exactly what it sounds like the brewers pitch lab is doing with him. If Chacin can throw the slider 60% of the time, so can Burnes. -
Do we pay any mind to Hiura's bizzare splits? They show themselves in the minors as well. Do we want him 3rd vs RHP and 5th vs LHP until numbers change or do we ignore the numbers. VS LHP we have Braun Garcia Cain and Yelich who should chime in before we get down to that next level of Gyorko Sogard Pina types.

tyrone taylor is out until late april or early may as recovers from left wrist surgery. makes the club less likely to trade gamel early in the season. Oh that's right. Slipped my mind. Well Broxton until Taylor is healthy isn't that bad. It really comes down to the fit of Gamel. He reverse splits LHP well. 3 of the 4 are better vs LHP and while Yellich is worse vs LHP he's still better than everyone else. Gamel isn't that good in CF and he really shouldn't play much in the OF with the other 4 taking up as many starts as they can. Garcia and Yelich play RF. Gamel is on the roster to backup Cain and his splits are bad when you'd prefer to sit Cain. He likely has some value, and he's a nice player but unlike so many of the puzzle pieces there isn't a way to put him in position to succeed without taking someone out of a good matchup. We need a guy who splits well vs RHP more than we need a neutral CF option. Garcia is a neutral CF option stunningly enough. Broxton doesn't fix the RHP part but he's plus in CF. 256-327-706 is his career slash line when he's most likely to play. It's not terrible, but it's pretty weak. Especially for this OF and the way MKE's offense leans on the OF. There's just a clear line of platoon through this entire roster, and Gamel doesn't fit that. (Arcia really doesn't either but I don't count him because he can't hit anything and Urias' crazy splits in the MLB are not reflected in the MiLB at all.)
-
He said something on the news about his wife saying, "ok it's time to get a job." Makes me wonder if Holt held out looking for something better and it didn't show up. Then teams pulled their other options and money dried up. I wonder if he semi-misplayed this looking for something sweeter. The 5 mil in 2021 really isn't too shabby. The 3.25 if MKE opts out is really solid. He could hit 4 mil though. As you said, he could certainly lead off for us vs RHP and top 450 AB. He has the big role in the Gyorkogard platoon. He's the one who hits RHP. As shown on page 1. Holt vs RHP 354 OBP the last 3 years Sogard vs LHP 343 OBP the last 3 years. Cain insurance and Cain's career OBP is 27 points higher vs LHP. Last years 324 OBP from the lead off spot won't cut it.
-
As stated in another thread. 1st batter OBP in 2018 was 357 1st batter OBP in 2019 was 324 That needs to be fixed even if it means putting Holt and Sogard as a lead off platoon. Or Holt/Cain platoon. This team can't let Cain sit in the 1 hole if he's sub 350 OBP vs that days split.
-
You want a 1st inning where your best batter doesn't bat? Because he hits a lot of HRs? You want a 400+ obp guy behind 3 guys? I don't get that. Invert Yelich Hiura sure. Otherwise I think you are trying to be too smart.
-
Braun has been a 330 obp guy for the last 3 years. Smoak hit 200 and got on base as much. If you aren't putting up north of 350 obp you shouldn't be in front of Yelich. I want Cain in the lead off spot vs LHP and Holt at lead off vs RHP. Yelich 2 and start the parade of Hiura Braun Garcia Smoak Narvaez depending on the matchup. Only time I'd even consider Braun ahead of Yelich is vs LHP. RHP Holt Yelich Hiura Narvaez Smoak Garcia (or Braun Smoak) Cain Sogard LHP Cain Yelich Braun Garcia Hiura Gyorko Sogard Pina (If Cain doesn't rebound Braun or Sogard are leading off) Before you say that's not RLRL... 3 batter minimum. As for where they should hit. I believe in the logic of 2. Especially when you have solid depth behind Yelich and his OBP is insanely high himself. Whether its 2 or 3 it can go in your favor or against you. I think if your best hitters OBP is coming off back to back 400+ seasons you put 1 guy in front of him and that guy has to be over 350 OBP. If you best hitter is more power less OBP then I'd put them 3rd. Yelich OBP vs RHP over the last two years has basically averaged 430. LHP only 390. HA! I'm not a big believer in the 1 swing only offense and I don't think this team relies on that as heavily as it has. Not saying they swing for singles but I'm very fond of high OBP lower K guys. They don't only WALK, they put the ball in play. High K guys frustrate me and kill a big innings and natural happening run production. You don't swing to move a runner but if you don't put a ball in play you aren't going to move a runner. Josh Bell: 109: 292: 4th OBP 367 so 4th makes sense Freddie Freeman: 109: 281: 3rd OBP 389 3rd or 2nd makes sense. Anthony Rendon: 109: 283: 3rd OBP 412 bat him 2nd. José Abreu: 104: 301: 3rd OBP 330 on a better team bat him 4th Cody Bellinger: 101: 296: 4th OBP 406 bat him 2nd Pete Alonso: 101: 278: 2nd OBP 358 should be 4th Mike Trout: 101: 254: 2nd OBP 438 boy is him and Rendon a duo at 2-3. Just bonkers. 850 OBP between the 2 and 3 hitter O.O I think where they bat should have a lot to do with OBP. Christian Yelich: 89: 238: 2nd OBP 429 so bat him 2nd. He had 110 RBI in 2018. You NEED the lead off guy to get on. Cain was a big problem for Yelich in 2019. 2018 leadoff hitter 357 OBP 2019 leadoff hitter 324 OBP Can't have the latter. Has to be north of 350. Yelich was down .00173 RBI/PA in 2019. I'm pretty confident the 33 point OBP drop in front of him played a part in that. While that seems small every number AVG OBP OPS OPS+ and HRs increased so RBIs should have increased as well but the lead off hitter did so much damage that it actually declined.
-
It doesn't help Gamel that he has reverse splits and 3 of the 4 other OFs particularly mash lefties. Yelich, the 4th, mashes everyone. Broxton doesn't fix that. Taylor looks a little more consistent in his splits over the last 2 years. 2018 much more than 2019.

Hader/Yelich Day of Reckoning
TJseven7 replied to Soupbone's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Your last paragraph, I think, is a bit off base. The Brewers could sign Yelich to a 7-year, $225 million extension that wouldn't cripple the franchise. * $15 million bonus over 2020, 2021, and 2022. * $210 million over the next 7 years * $90 million of that is deferred - to be paid out over the 30 years after the extension ($3 million/year) * That leaves an average salary of $17.143 million over those seven years. Or, slightly above the $16 million AAV that LoCain currently has. That is a non-albatross deal, and it keeps Yelich in Milwaukee through 2029. And you keep saying this but if Yelich continues what he's been doing he's going to get 280 mil over 7 years on his next contract. DEFERRING 90 mil so that we can keep his elite self for 4 more years is bonkers. -
I seriously doubt if the electronic umpire had anything to do with the Brewers' not committing long term to Grandal. They knew the money was just too much to handle long term. His defense was secondary to his offense. That's why they went and got Narvaez this year. The electornics will have little effect on the overall value of catchers. I agree with you but that's not perception. Framing is, in my opinion, the most wildly overrated metric for valuation of a player in all of pro sports. You take that metric away and certain catchers are going to look far less valuable on a number of measuring sticks.

Misc. Offseason Brewers Prospect Rankings
TJseven7 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I'm not going to bat for McClanahan. It just wouldn't be stunning if this was his year. It also won't be stunning if this isn't his year and if it isn't he's on that lost cause list. Ward is certainly a very interesting guy. He's got 2 years in my opinion to put something together though. That what I believe gets overlooked in this system. There are a lot of guys who have no reason to be rated on anyone's top 30 list, who 1 year later could fly up everyone's top 30 list. Lots of athletes. Lots of true lottery tickets. -
Am I nuts for thinking this? Woodruff and Burnes
TJseven7 replied to The stache's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
As much as I'd love to see this I don't think Burnes is going to be in that level of talk before 2021. I don't think he starts the year in MKE. I don't want him in the pen. Guy is coming off a nightmare season and they've changed approaches and there was a sports psychologist etc etc. I don't see that being a light switch moment for him. I believe it'll get him back on the right path and he'll grow back into the lofty expectations he had prior to 2019. I think he could build towards a pretty impressive 2021. To be completely honest, I don't care if he's ACE level. Right now the Brewers have 5 years of control on Woodruff Lauer and Burnes. They aren't incredibly far away from Small Ashby File Supak and maybe Brown (with people warming up on Bettinger) having a shot at being MLB starters. Some feel Houser can start, there's talk of Peralta as well. They also have 5 years of control. 1-2 punch would be great, but the narrative that MKE can't develop starters could take a serious hit in the next 2-3 years when MKE has 5 starters that they didn't have to sign in FA. 5 controlled guys from our system (via trades or draft picks) starting in MKE and throwing 4.0 or below ERA ball would be a huge feat for MKE and I think it's highly possible in the next few years. In the coming years (as soon as 2021 or 2022) MKE should have 8 legitimate threats to be in the rotation via trades or draft picks. and 3 could be lefty O.O (our farm is garbage ) Sure would be nice to see Lindblom do well and be able to flip him before the end of his deal. -
Well CC even made a comment about figuring out the pen. The last 3 spots in the pen are completely up in the air. I think the rest is cut and dry. Black Wahl Burnes Devin Feyereisen Yardley. Could all slot in there. Anyone else would be a bit of a surprise and require a big spring. I'd prefer Burnes to start AAA over the MLB pen. I think Peralta and Houser are locks and may stay where they are or swap roles. However, they have 6 clear cut front runners for 3 roles heading towards opening day. Hader Suter Peralta/Houser Phelps Claudio... 3 roles The only way I see them shaking up the offense is: injury or Gamel (insert Taylor on the MLB roster) being traded for a RP.
-
If we are really that concerned about his defense pull him after the home 7th or road 6th for a defensive sub in games where we have a lead. He's a starter. He'll rest a few games but he's an every day guy.
-
His stuff was much better for most of those sub 4 era seasons. His first season with the Brewers and 2nd half the prior season were the classic "reinvent himself as a pitcher" seasons where he threw half sliders half fastballs. For starters, that catches up with your arm. Also, Chacin needs extended stretches of basically spotting those pitches exactly where he wants to have success as he's a 2 pitch starter and only the slider is plus. In 2019, he could spot the slider consistently but not the fastball. We saw the results. On top of that, even when he was on in 2018...I was still generally surprised he posted a 3.5 ERA considering his metrics. K rate, BB rate, BABIP, contact stats. Looking at those for 2018 don't paint the picture of a 3.5 ERA guy. You look at Woodruff stuff and those same metrics for 2019 Woodruff, it's clear who the better pitcher is and it's not close. That's a lot of thinking to explain to create a story about why a guy with one of the most dominant sliders in baseball fell on his face with a new ball that destroyed a lot of slider pitchers.
