  1. Thankfully this team has played well enough that they can play like crap for a week and it doesn't put them in a hole. There's still a long way to go, and I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that they have a few more stretches of crappy play in them. It's a matter of keeping those stretches small, and taking advantage of the hot stretches by trying to prolong those as much as possible.
  2. Oh sure ... there are plenty of excuses, but I don't know if any of them are legitimate. Hernan Perez has been slumping pretty bad the last couple weeks, and while Travis Shaw hit a dinger yesterday, he's been ice cold for the most part as well, and shouldn't really be facing lefties even if he were hitting his weight. I expect Hiura or Dubon to come up today or tomorrow and see time at 2B. Saladino has been solid in AAA as well, even though he's been a little colder lately.
  3. Santana's defense certainly doesn't erase his value as an offensive performer, but it certainly helps temper it. He'd hold more value strictly as a DH ... which is likely his future role, as his defense isn't going to improve at this point.
  4. Well ... Moose has arguably been this team's 2nd offensive MVP so far, so things would look pretty rough taking him out of the lineup. It would have, however, opened a spot for Hiura to be starting every day at 2B, though, so perhaps the drop-off in production wouldn't have been hugely significant. Minor's numbers would sure look good solidifying the staff right now.
  5. Santana WAS a 4th OF for the Brewers. So they traded a 4th OF and got back a 4th OF and a pitcher. Plus now the 4th OF is a decent defender who can play all 3 OF positions. Santana was and never will be a 4th OFer. He just had nowhere to play here and had an impossible road back to playing time here after early struggles. We 100% gave up the better and more valuable player...but we got something we needed for something we couldn’t use. I think people are really trying to find any way to devalue Santana, but the guy is still solid. I don’t think we have some huge loss on our hands (or any loss really), but let’s not pretend Santana isn’t a good player. I don’t regret them trading him because we flat out had to and he had nowhere to play here. They weren’t eating Braun’s contract and dumping him. Santana>Braun...but let’s be honest and just accept that wasn’t ever going to happen. Even then it isn't like Santana is some 4 WAR player. He is just solid. I've always thought that to be a good player, you need to be a solid defender, as well as good with the bat. Santana is an atrocious right fielder. He is a good hitter, but not a good overall player, because his defense makes him a flat out liability. It's too bad, too, because he's easily athletic enough, and has a cannon for an arm. I'm happy with the trade because it brought back decent value in Gamel, who doesn't profile as a superstar, but as a solid role player and energy guy who seems to be a great fit on this team. And don't sleep on Zavolas, who is turning out to be a nice little pitching prospect.
  6. This is 100% bingo. I agree ... I just have a really difficult time understanding our some of the guys that go extremely negative on nearly every post can enjoy watching baseball. The IGTs I would say are more toxic than they have ever been this year.
  7. I think playing consistent, winning baseball is a tough thing to accomplish for any team. The best teams over the last decade all had stretches of the regular season where they looked like crap. A regular season is a marathon, and there are 88 games left to this season. Last year's team went through very similar stretches where they played terrible baseball, and fans proclaimed them to not be a good team. By all means, showing frustration in the way the team is currently playing is warranted. However, I think a little bit of perspective and humility also needs to come into play. Most fans realized going into the year that the April and May schedule for this team was a gauntlet of very tough, playoff-worthy teams, whereas last year's team feasted off lower-rung teams while building their great early season record. And as of today, this team sits at 40-34, while last year's squad sat at 44-30 at the same point of the season. That's only a four game difference, which is quite literally nothing when you have 88 remaining. To sum it up, I think we should have high expectations, but living and dying on every game in a 162-game season is probably a fool's errand. The story of this season is yet to be written.
  8. Has given up 9 runs in his last 12 innings. On edit....make that 10 in his last 13 innings. I'm a huge Davies fan, but some regression was probably in the cards. He's not an ace, but is likely a solid mid-rotation guy. Those guys are going to have outings where they don't look great.
  9. Sample size is too small to draw those conclusions So, Hiura's AAA numbers mean nothing? Cain would not hit like Hiura at AAA like Hiura has, either. Hiura is a pure hitter that has proven himself at every level ... Cain is in decline this season. I want Hiura to come up, if only to put this "I have a fever, and the only cure is more Hiura cowbell" narrative to bed.
  10. This is pretty much what a lot of people said last year as well. Whole lot of season left.
  11. If you think Counsell would have Hiura at the top of the line-up even if here were up right now, I have bridge to sell you. And no, I'm not disagreeing that Hiura shouldn't be up. He makes a lot more sense than Cain and his .300 OBA. If you think that Counsell would ever drop Cain in the lineup, much less for a rookie, I have another bridge for sale

  13. This! Perfection! We've scored 1 run combined the last 2 games. Yeah, what's your point? Brew4U was responding to a poster who literally said it was a short-lived lead and Hiura is who we need. Hiura doesn't pitch.
  14. Agreed on Perez. Aside from the fact that he can play any position on the field and provides a solid, if unspectacular bat, there's the fact that Counsell seems to adore him. Saladino and Spangenberg are very similar-type players, but swapping Perez for one of them would probably be making a move just to make a move. Perez comes across as a fun-loving but very intelligent, thoughtful player. That's why it's sometime painful to see some of the undisciplined at-bats he puts up. I think other than his often poor plate discipline, Counsell sees a lot of himself in Perez. He's an "intangibles" guy, and every team needs those.
  15. I disagree that Medeiros was a bust. He brought back Soria in a trade, and Soria was a huge part of the shutdown pen in September that they rode to the playoffs. He has not looked good so far for AA Birmingham in the White Sox system, though. He had an ERA north of 6 in September/October last year and was a human trash can in the NLCS too. Soria was pretty terrible for us and the fact two months of a reliever is all our former #12 could net us is a solid sign he was a bust for us. Not to mention he was pretty expensive on top of that. I mean, sure, he was apart of the shutdown pen. He wasn't the shutdown part of it though. Yeah, i guess when you qualify it that way, that makes sense. But when you consider that this team has drafted the likes of Mark Rogers, Evan Fredrickson, Eric Arnett, Kentrail Davis, Kyle Heckathorn, Dylan Covey, Taylor Jungmann, Jed Bradley, Clint Coulter, and Victor Roache in the 1st round over the last 15 years, getting a half season of a decent reliever doesn't sound too bad. Of course, that is more of an indictment of how poorly this team has drafted in the 1st round than anything. But if Medeiros continues down his path, that deal was a decent example of making lemonade out of a lemon. It certainly wasn't a good pick.

  17. Yep, this weekend is it. It's do or die time for Shaw and Aguilar. I know I've been preaching patience with both of these guys, but watching Shaw flail away like a T-Baller last night after he came in for Moose was disgusting. Aguilar wasn't much better, and he's a guy they have depended on this year to face left-handed pitching. The guy the Padres had going last night wasn't the type of overpowering left-hander that Aguilar shouldn't have been able to handle, but he looked lost yet again. I'm not one to shoot from the hip or make rash decisions, but this team is seemingly in a funk right now, and it may be time to shake some things up. Hell, if they don't want to bring up Hiura, there a re plenty of other guys at San Antonio bashing lately, including Frietas, Saladino, Dubon, Nottingham and Spangenberg.
  18. Well, Yamamoto's terrific start to his MLB career ought to quiet the "Brewers fleeced the Marlins so now they won't trade with us" farce that has popped up here a time or two.
  19. Yep, exactly. I mean, I love what Gamel brings to the team, except that that lefty bat is redundant. Ugh Shaw ... I stood by you, and preached justification for you continuing to get your opportunities. That patience is wearing very, very thin now. I wouldn't imagine that a 29-year-old power hitting corner infielder could just lose it ... but maybe. They only thing he's improved since his IL stint is his patience. Otherwise he still can't catch up to anything in the zone.
  20. Braun swings right through a 93 mph fastball he should destroy. He's still swinging that dang log too. I think it may be time for him to swallow that pride a bit and switch to a lighter stick.
  21. So I guess in the grand scheme of things it could be worse than stinking up a few games on the west coast. Yet Rick Hahn continues to draw a big paycheck. Granted Tatis wasn't a huge heralded prospect, but that deal didn't even make sense when it happened.
  22. There's a BIG difference between throwing out the blanket "this team is not very good", and saying this team isn't as good as the one that won 96 games last year. Given the difficult first part of the season schedule, I imagine most fans would be more than happy to have the team with a record where's its currently at. Yeah, they are having a bad trip. They'll play better soon. I think it's possible this is just a bad stretch. The problem is they don't seem to be all in on winning now when you look at the roster management. You can't demote good players that can help for players who are mot helping and then expect the fan base to just be like nothing to see here. Play your best players. We all can live with the results a bit better if that happens. I agree with you there ... 100%. I get why Stearns loves those lefty power bats, as they play really well at Miller Park. But he may have gone overboard, which is being proven in this series. Of course, it doesn't help that the guys who are supposed to be able to hit lefties aren't hitting lefties right now.
  23. This is the toughest pill to swallow, IMO. It’s impossible to know if any of these game results would have been different, but at least you would have been giving yourself the best possible chance to score runs throughout these six games on the west coast, five of which were against left handed starting pitchers. Getting tougher and tougher to justify that the move wasn't motivated by save a few million dollars a few years down the road. And as a fan, that sucks.
