When we entered 2024 with 77 DSL-level players (including 8 signed mid-to-late 2023 who had not yet debuted), then announced a 35-player signing class in January, I wondered how we'd manage the whopping 112-player base, particularly since we typically commence the season with about 69 DSL-level players (including injury placements). It looked to me like we were facing about 43 moves (total of promotions and releases). Well, after adding 3 more signings to bring the grand total to 115, here's how it shook out: 60 active DSL players (this is the maximum allowed - i.e. 30 per team) 21 promotions (20 to ACL, Yophery to Low-A) 17 injury placements (4 from 2024 signings, 13 from prior classes) 13 releases (all from prior classes) 2 placed on restricted list (1 from 2024 signings, 1 from prior class) 2 not yet assigned (1 from 2024 signings, 1 from prior class)

Clarke consistently touched 93-94mph (peaking at 94.6) and was given a nice 2-0 lead by the 2nd inning, then deftly navigated around a double and hit-by-pitch to open the bottom of the 3rd inning (K, soft line out, ground out to pitcher). In the 4th inning, an infield single, walk and error with nobody out set the table for 1B Tyler Black (2-for-6, HR, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored), who jumped on a first pitch, 70.9mph curveball to bring everyone home in grand fashion: Sounds’ Extras: Left fielder Isaac Collins (3-for-5, 3 RBIs; .886 OPS) knocked in the first run of the day en route to a 3-hit afternoon. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Wisconsin had already clinched this week’s series on Saturday, so perhaps that explains why the offense was a bit flat on Sunday (out-hit 12 to 5). Midwest League K/9 leader 6’4” LHP Mark Manfredi (3.52 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 14.1 K/9 in 30 2/3 IP) is scheduled to dominate the first game of the series. RHP Blake Whiting and Aidan Maldonado were unsuccessful in stranding inherited runners, going 0-for-5 in that department, though Maldonado’s work was marred by a 2-run error (one of 2 errors by 1B Reece Walling). Whiting and RHP Morris Austin combined for a rather poor day at the office: 2 IP, 5 R (3 ER), 1 H, 6 BB, 1 HBP, 2 WPs, 2 Ks. Who else contributed to the day’s septet of errors?: Timmerman 1, Guilarte 1, Luis Castillo 1 (but he had 3 RBIs), RHP Cristopher Carrasco 2. Carrasco’s (1 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) two-some came in the top of the 9th inning to give Delmarva its last lead. Next week’s outlook: The Mudcats will bus four hours down the coast to Charleston, South Carolina to open their series with the Rays’ affiliate. Although no starter has been announced, 18-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez (3.98 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 in 40 2/3 IP) is most likely to get the ball for Game One. High-A Wisconsin leads its home series 4-1 over Fort Wayne and has solid 22-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 in 41 IP) toeing the rubber tonight. 2B Dylan O’Rae is tied for the Midwest League lead in stolen bases (26 in 49 games).

21-year old RHP Josh Timmerman (4.23 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 27.2 IP) and Low-A Carolina are indeed shooting to finish off a 6-game home series sweep of Delmarva. LF Yhoswar Garcia’s .336 batting average is 4th in the 12-team Carolina League (of top 100-PA players).
