AA Biloxi battles the Mississippi Braves this week, with LHP Adam Seminaris (3.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 38 IP) making his 2nd start of 2024 in tonight’s opening game of the series. CF Carlos D. Rodriguez comes in with an 11-game hitting streak.

High-A Wisconsin faces Marlins’ affiliate Beloit this week, with LHP Mark Manfredi (4.04 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 in 49 IP) aiming to bounce back tonight from a rough last outing. SS Gregory Barrios has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.

Hard-throwing, 26-year old LHP Justin King went undrafted in 2021, signed in June 2022, skipped Low-A, played in Australia and the Arizona Fall League, rapidly moving all the way up to AA ball this year. As we’re not in the habit of releasing hard-throwing lefties in AA ball with 4.5 years of minor league control remaining, there’s likely something more to this, in my opinion. Let me not speculate. I think we dangled Black last year but didn’t find the right deal, but his value may now be LESS than last year - a year older, still no defensive position, no next level offensive achievement (e.g: more power) unlocked. We can probably trade from our 2nd tier of prospects, excluding most pitchers - e.g. Luis Lara, Yophery Rodriguez, Eric Bitonti, Luke Adams, Mike Boeve, Dylan O’Rae, Juan Baez, Wes Clarke, Bishop Letson, Filippo Di Turi.

Maybe it's time to give up on Tyler Black actually mastering a position and just go the Brad Miller route - let Black loose all over the field, demonstrating versatility and athleticism while making mistakes.

Starting 17-year old, 6'5" RHP Paul Hoff (born in Buchholz, Germany) has recorded his 2nd straight "take note" outing for DSL Brewers-2, throwing 5 scoreless innings while allowing only 1 single with zero walks and zero HBPs. Of course, we can’t really blame Manager Nick Stanley for the aggressive approach on the basepaths, as the club went 9-for-9 on steal attempts one game prior. Although eight Mudcats reached base via hit or walk in the game, Carolina only had two at-bats with runners in scoring position, with C Satchell Norman singling home DH Miguel Briceno in the 2nd inning and 1B Blayberg Diaz striking out with Norman on third base to end the same frame. Mudcats’ Extras: 2B Filippo Di Turi (2-for-3, walk) was a bright spot for the offense, reaching base 3 times including leading off the 8th inning with a single, before the final six Mudcats were retired in order. RHP Jeferson Figueroa (2 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) made his second spot start of 2024, giving up two homers and a double as the Mudcats fell behind 3-1 by the 2nd inning. Let’s note the solid relief work of RHPs Jose Nova, Brailin Rodriguez and Aidan Maldonado, who combined to concede just one run: 7 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 5 BB, 5 Ks. While Brailin needs to curtail those walks (3), I won’t begrudge Nova’s two walks given that he’d never exceeded 2 innings in any of his prior 12 games. A win would give AA Biloxi a 4-2 home series victory over Pensacola. We sat LF Zavier Warren and his 6-game hitting streak yesterday in a 4-2 loss, then choose to bat him 8th today. And we’re sitting OF Carlos D. Rodriguez and his 11-game hitting streak today. Interesting.

The final 6 Mudcats went down in order, so they fall 4-2 and tied their home series against Lynchburg 3-3. 2B Filippo Di Turi reached base 3 times (2 singles, walk), but credit Hillcats’ just-turned 20-year old catcher Manuel Mejias with throwing out 3 of 4 attempted basestealers, a day after his teammate went 0-for-9.

Hicklen K’d, then Wiemer’s basically an automatic out at the moment (K), but Owen Miller walked and Yonny Hernandez put the Sounds ahead 7-6 with a 1st-pitch single the other way to score Wes Clarke! That’s Nashville’s first lead of the day and RHP Kevin Herget comes in. Is he tasked with getting the final 6 outs?

Isaac Collins ties it up on a blast to right field! 6-6, still in the 8th inning. That’s his 10th homer of the year. And Clarke follows with a walk.

They’re into the 8th inning in Jacksonville, with the Sounds trailing 6-5. It wasn’t planned as a bullpen day, but they were reasonably-rested to handle it after Garrett Stallings lasted only 1.2 IP. Collins, Clarke and Hicklen are a promising trio due up.
