  1. Kapler or Shildt sound like decent options based on 5 minutes of desktop research.
  2. In the AFL All-Star Game, the Brewers' major highlight (Eric Brown Jr.'s homer) was captured above. The NL side had more opportunities, but went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position, stranding 8 baserunners and falling 6-3 to the AL side. The AL team hit three home runs in the 4th/5th innings to stretch their lead from 2-1 to 6-2, with Brown's homer temporarily cutting the deficit to 5-2. Box score. SS Eric Brown Jr. - 1-for-2, HR, RBI - K'd the other time up; fielded 4 ground ball outs 1B Wes Clarke - 0-for-2 - K'd and flied out to right field I hate to say it, but OF Victor Scott is looking like a heckuva find for the Cardinals - 94 stolen bases in 2023 in High-A/AA, then another 16 already in 22 AFL games. He doubled, walked twice and stole 3 bases for the NL side in this game. Scott's a 2022 fifth round pick - about 2 months younger than Brown Jr. and cost far less to sign. I love that Brown Jr. is shining and confident in his refined stroke, but also detest seeing the Cardinals have an exciting prospect.
  3. Sunday fun in Venezuela and Mexico: CF Jackson Chourio - 2-for-4, walk (singled to left field and third base; now hitting .280) - in Zulia's 5-1 victory over CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 1-for-4 (hitting .288) - in Magallanes 8-2 loss to La Guaira RHP Christian Mejias - 1.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K - earned the Win in Aragua's 10-6 defeat of Lara LHP Jesus Broca - 2.2 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 2 Ks, 1 WP, 1 balk - it was a tough start for the 20-year old in Mexico, wearing the Loss in Guasave's 8-7 defeat to Monterrey Unfortunately, I'm still struggling to find consistent box scores from Puerto Rico. I'll also say that RHP JC Mejia (injured on August 13, 2023; technically still a Brewer, but suspended until late September 2024) is playing for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Republic. His line from Thursday's 9-5 loss to Cibao: 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks.
  4. Saturday's Action (Jackson): CF Jackson Chourio - 1-for-4, HR, RBI - temporarily cut the deficit to 3-1, in Zulia's 6-1 defeat to La Guaira CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-5, RBI - 4th inning RBI single extended Magallanes lead to 3-1 over Anzoategui; Magallanes ultimately won 6-3 Elsewhere, the Puerto Rican league commenced play on Friday, although the opening day box score is difficult to find: C Brian Navarreto (likely a free agent in a few days) Friday: 1-for-4, SF, RBI - added a late insurance run for Carolina in their 4-2 win over Mayaguez Saturday: 0-for-2, HBP, sac bunt - Carolina was one out away from a 1-0 victory, but instead fell 2-1 to Santurce
  5. Home Run Derby Live Stream starts shortly. Go Wes Clarke!!:
  6. Baez didn’t play any shortstop in his final 23 games (including ACL and Low-A playoffs), so I really think that ship has largely sailed. I’m excited to have solid bat-first third basemen at each level: Black (until promotion), Wilken, Adams, Baez. I understand each one will see continued speculation about possible position moves, but such is life.
  7. From Friday’s games in Venezuela: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 0-for-3, 2 walks, caught stealing - in Magallanes 9-6 defeat to La Guaira - RHP Christian Mejias - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua’s 2-0 loss to Anzoategui Also, back on Wednesday in the Dominican Republic, LHP Fernando Abad (likely a free agent in a few days) helped Toros del Este win 7-1 over Tigres del Licey - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks
  8. Oh my. Now the Rea move makes even more sense. No Miley or Lauer. No idea if Gasser will excel in his first MLB season. Tricky proposition. Anyone fancy Alex Wood or Hyun-Jin Ryu?
  9. These articles rank the NL 2024 ROY favorites as 1) Jordan Lawlar, 2) Pete Crow-Armstrong, 3) Paul Skenes and 1) Paul Skenes, 2) Jordan Lawlar, 3) James Wood, 4) Jackson Chourio, 5) Pete Crow-Armstrong, 6) Jackson Merrill: https://www.mlb.com/news/pipeline-inbox-contenders-for-2024-rookies-of-the-year https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/38271478/mlb-2023-prospects-call-help-rookie-year My position is usually a boring one on these call-ups, as I think the evidence suggests that we're rather conservative on starting clocks and allowing anybody to be Super-2 eligible (after being on the wrong side of that by 1 day with Hader one year). To me, this is why we didn't see Frelick in MLB in 2022 or Black/Gasser in MLB in 2023. So I don't think we'll see Chourio in MLB until relatively late in 2024, for better or worse. And I think he'll be sharing that Nashville outfield with Wiemer and Mitchell quite a bit, as we seriously manipulate their service time. Chourio started relatively slowly (for him) in AA in 2023, so it wouldn't necessarily be shocking if that repeats itself in AAA in the first half of 2024, which I believe would suit the Brewers' brass just fine as a reason to keep him down for longer seasoning.
  10. Barrios and Pratt seem to be the priority shortstops based on this year’s innings. I’ve got Baez projected at 3B, Barrios at 2B, Pratt at SS, O’Rae in CF. Once Bitonti (still 17) is ready for Low-A, he’d likely push Baez into a rover role. I’d be disappointed if we held either of Areinamo or Guilarte back in Low-A, though I understand High-A may look like a bit of a logjam. Maybe we’d trade one player from that High-A infield surplus.
  11. On Thursday evening, the Saguaros reversed Wednesday's mojo, this time coming back from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the Mesa Solar Sox 5-2. Box score. They now hold a 2.5-game first place lead, with just 4 scheduled games remaining (plus an All Star Game, Home Run Derby + hopefully Playoffs). 1B Wes Clarke - 1-for-4, HR, RBI - that's his 5th homer of the AFL season (.292 AVG, 1.017 OPS), adding an insurance run late in the game (video evidence) 2B Eric Brown Jr. - 0-for-4 (.289 AVG, .802 OPS)
  12. Wednesday's games in Venezuela were largely rained out, but here are relevant performances from Thursday: RHP Edwin Jimenez - 4 IP, 6 R (4 ER), 6 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks - took the loss as La Guaira fell 6-4 to Lara CF Jackson Chourio - 1-for-4 (hitting .235) - in Zulia's 3-2 loss to Magallanes CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 0-for-4 (hitting .300) for Magallanes
  13. Depth in case we trade Adames or lose Devanney in Rule 5 draft? Capra's got just one option year remaining. I didn't see any articles calling him a plus defensive player...just "versatile" mentioned severally. Relatively high BABIPs the past 3 years, but not a big base stealer. Solid BB/K rates past 2 years fits the profile we like.
  14. What are we guessing? $2.75m base, incentives for 110+ innings, $6m option for 2025, $250k buyout? Maybe I’m waaaayyy off.
  15. 1B Wes Clarke in the AFL Home Run Derby on Saturday:
  16. Brailin Rodriguez came through when it mattered most (ACL Championship Game), so hopefully he shines (e.g. starting at Low-A Carolina) in 2024.
  17. Re-sign Santana (fielding, OBP) and Donaldson (betting on HRs, also not a bad fielder). Let’s not make the mistake we made in late 2019 when we didn’t welcome Jesus Aguilar back with open arms.
  18. Not much Tuesday action: - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 1-for-4 - in Magallanes 4-0 loss to Caracas - CF Jackson Chourio - 0-for-4, walk - in Zulia’s 10-3 win over La Guaira - LHP Jesus Broca - 1.1 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 0 Ks - short start in Guasave's 8-6 victory over Obregon
  19. - RHP Caleb Boushley outrighted to AAA Nashville by MLB Brewers. I suspect he'll likely also be a minor league free agent in a few days.
  20. Sunday fun: CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 2-for-5, RBI in Magallanes 5-3 win over Aragua RHP Christian Mejias - 2.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks - in Aragua's defeat 2B Eduardo Garcia - 0-for-2 in Lara's 6-2 victory over Zulia PH Jackson Chourio - 0-for-1 for Zulia (flew out to right field) RHP Kaleb Bowman - 0.2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks - in La Guaira's 7-0 loss to Margarita
  21. 5-game series, so we can’t just be bounced in 2 games. Less rest for the weary. Sounds good. I’m torn on the Free Win. Either way is fine to me. Oh, and Go Dinos!
  22. The Saguaros pushed their first place lead to 1.5 games with a 4-2 victory over Scottsdale in a 7-inning contest. Box score. - 1B Wes Clarke - 0-for-2, walk - 2B Eric Brown Jr. - 0-for-3
  23. Saturday action: - DH Jackson Chourio - 0-for-4, run scored - in Zulia’s 3-2 loss to Lara - 1B Jesus Chirinos - 0-for-3 for Zulia - CF Carlos D. Rodriguez - 0-for-4 in Magallanes’ 4-1 loss to Aragua - RHP Edwin Jimenez - didn’t retire any of 6 batters (BB, 1B, HR, BB, BB, 1B) - but his La Guaira club stormed back from deficits of 4-0 and 11-5 to defeat Margarita 16-12
