  1. With Scherzer’s back surgery, what are the latest Burnes 2024 odds?: - Rangers - 25% - Orioles - 25% - Brewers - 40% - Other - 10%
  2. Manager Nestor Corredor’s Aguilas del Zulia squad dropped their 6th game in a row (20-0 to Margarita), falling to 7th in the 8-team Venezuelan League. They have about 12 games remaining to claw back into the Top 4. - PH/1B Jesus Chirinos - 0-for-1 for Zulia - C Brian Navarreto - 0-for-3, walk, run; nobody attempted to steal against him - in Carolina’s 4-1 win over Ponce
  3. It looks like the Wilson, NC stadium project is a go, to be completed just before the 2026 season. The council approved all the resolutions, though perhaps they’ll have to issue the municipal bonds first.
  4. Yonny’s 2-for-49 Venezuelan Winter League disaster has me expecting nothing. 🤦‍♂️
  5. Clarke’s remaining option basically gives us the whole season to help him find the right mix and groove. Can’t complain. We may one day look back on INF Cam Devanney like INF Dylan Moore, though at least we’re getting a player in return this time. Good luck to Devanney and Ryan Brady. This may open the door to a spot in AAA for INF Freddy Zamora, but he may still need to earn it with a solid spring. INF Vinny Capra’s our numero uno SS in AAA, I think.
  6. Good analysis there. I think Dunn’s nearly 2 years older than any other position player (despite barely playing above AA ball), so maybe he’ll sit this one out in favor of Daniel Guilarte. We’ll see. Something tells me Tanner Shears will likely be part of this.
  7. Wednesday games: C Brian Navarreto - 2-for-4, double, 2 runs scored in Carolina's 9-0 victory over RA12 - again, nobody attempted to steal against him RHP Christian Mejias - 1.2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K - in Aragua's 8-4 loss to Caracas. He gave up a homer to 29-year old UT Jose Rondon, who's mashing in Winter Ball (13 HRs, 1.079 OPS) Of course, Ronald Acuna Jr. (1.468 OPS), Yasiel Puig (1.344 OPS), Maikel Garcia (1.161 OPS) and Wilson Garcia (1.046 OPS) are also mashing in Venezuela.
  8. On Tuesday, C Brian Navarreto went 0-for-3 with 2 walks as Carolina defeated Santurce 5-4 in 10 innings. Nobody tried to steal on him for the second straight game.
  9. Jackson Chourio, Ronald Acuna and others in the Venezuelan League’s Home Run Derby:
  10. On Sunday, C Brian Navarreto went 0-for-3 as Carolina lost a walk-off 4-3 to Santurce.
  11. I’d think some Brewers’ fans would be interested in Max Muncy and/or Chris Taylor. How about 1B/3B Max Muncy and INF Miguel Vargas for INF Brice Turang, OF Tyrone Taylor and RHP Adrian Houser? Am I crazy?
  12. Friday games: - C Brian Navarreto - 2-for-3, 2 RBIs - in Carolina’s 9-3 win over Mayaguez (Puerto Rico) Checking in on our coaches - Victor Estevez’s Leones del Escogido (Dominican Republic) have won 7 of 10 to move to 3rd place in the 6-team league at 21-18 - Nester Corredor’s Aguilas del Zulia (Venezuela) have won 6 of 10 to move to 4th place in the 8-team league at 20-20
  13. On Thursday, C Brian Navarreto went 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs as Carolina defeated Caguas 5-0.
  14. I doubt there’s much available to our liking. Probably best to re-sign Brent Diaz, Jason Lopez, Jose Sibrian and Alex Hall.
  15. And we've also selected nobody in the minor league phase:
  16. Interesting. I'd initially had him pegged for possibly a fresh start, but the trades of Avina and Mendez, plus the fact that he plays center field and seems to have a great attitude, made me think we'd protect him again.
  17. No MLB Rule 5 pick for the Brewers this year, per Adam McCalvy
  18. The Rule 5 Draft is underway. It looks like the Yankees (Spence, Sauer) and Red Sox (Drohan, Fernandez - to the Cardinals) quickly lost two pitchers each. The Marlins lost the first position player (INF Nunez) and the Rangers also lost a pitcher (Slaten),
  19. From a little desktop review, maybe we'd look at the ranked Yankees' arms (RHP Matt Sauer, LHP Edgar Barclay), a Giants' reliever (RHP RJ Dabovich) or stash a youngster (Blue Jays' RHP Dahian Santos). We may also lose RHP Evan McKendry, who had one of the top WHIPs in the 20-team International League. I'll also once say that in theory it should be much easier to stash a bat than in the past, with teams forced to roster 13 position players (vs. typically holding 11-12 in recent years) and the introduction of the DH to the National League (much fewer pinch hitting appearances). For that reason, we could lose INF Cam Devanney and also choose to select any number of prospects with one dominant tool (e.g. defensive SS/C, stolen base artist, pinch hitter).
  20. Brisbane held on for a 3-2 victory over Melbourne on Sunday morning, with 1B Tayden Hall (1-for-4; batting cleanup but still hitting just .190) contributing a double and a run scored. Box score. They should be back in action starting Thursday, hosting 4 games over 3 days against Canberra.
  21. There are not many Brewers left participating in Winter League ball, which is a marked deviation from prior years. Tuesday's sole note: C Brian Navarreto - 1-for-4; threw out only basestealer - but Carolina lost a tough one 2-1 to Mayaguez
  22. Pure speculation with no offense to the hard-working players: I'm guessing that the McGee, Hicklen and Carlson additions are not yet official, meaning that we would only need to expose 7 players to the minor league phase. I'd guess those would be: P Rafael Garcia, P Fray Morelo, OF Reidy Mercado, C Nick Kahle, INF Yonny Hernandez (hitting 2-for-49 in Venezuela), INF Jose Acosta and P Jeferson Figueroa. However, if I assume that the McGee, Hicklen and Carlson additions are official, then I'd add OF Terence Doston, P Nick Bennett and P Christian Mejias. Of course if we lose any players in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft (e.g. Evan McKendry, Cam Devanney, Freddy Zamora, Tobias Myers, Justin Yeager, Isaac Collins, Patrick Dorrian, Carlos D. Rodriguez, Alexander Cornielle), then we'd be able to protect more in the minor league phase.
  23. Adames to Dodgers? Dodgers Could Be Looking To Upgrade At Shortstop ”Ardaya mentions Brewers shortstop Willy Adames, who the Dodgers were interested in last offseason, as a potential trade candidate. Indeed, the 28-year-old would certainly be an upgrade…However, after Adames, it’s hard to identify other shortstops who would count as an upgrade.” I hate to admit it, but an Adames trade now is probably safer than hoping he does enough from April-July 2024 to retain solid value before the trade deadline. Turang would presumably shift to SS and we’d need to add 2 major infield bats.
  24. I have to give Arnold the benefit of the doubt this time around, after wondering how we’d make it all fit together last year (Guerra, Varland, Payamps and Wilson all could not be optioned).
