RHP James Meeker's low walk rate is incredible and I hope he gets a taste of AAA ball this year, with an eventual MLB call-up in 2024. RHP Nick Merkel has also done a terrific job limiting walks (78 Ks vs. 17 BBs), although the 5.24 ERA in High-A ball and age (25) give some pause. His OPS against in High-A is just .699 after registering .643 in Low-A, so he's worth monitoring. RHP Shane Smith is also an interesting arm - 23 - Low-A/High-A - 1.99 ERA. 0.95 WHIP. 71 Ks vs. 16 BBs in 49.2 IP. This is all coming after barely pitching in 2021 (college) and 2022 (MILB) due to injury and recovery. RHP Ryan Brady is also doing special things in his first full minor league season - 24 - High-A/AA - 2.88 ERA. 1.11 WHIP. 66 Ks vs. 17 BBs in 68.2 IP. LHP Luis Amaya dominated High-A ball, but is now trying to figure out AA - 24 - High-A/AA - 3.35 ERA. 1.10 WHIP. 54 Ks vs. 15 BBs in 53.2 IP. RHP Chase Costello is still sitting in Low-A for some reason. It's tough to assess him and whether his low K-rate will inhibit him until he's given some time at Wisconsin - 23 - Low-A - 2.53 ERA. 0.95 WHIP. 44 Ks vs. 15 BBs in 57 IP. LHP Justin King didn't stand out in Australia, but was exceptional early in the year for Wisconsin, then has recently struggled since return from injury - 25 - High-A - 3.25 ERA. 1.59 WHIP. 51 Ks vs. 21 BBs in 27.2 IP. Yes, he's striking out 16.6 per 9 innings! RHP Tanner Shears - last but certainly not least as he's raising eyebrows and expectations in his first season in affiliated baseball after half a year in independent ball - 24 - High-A/Low-A - 1.54 ERA. 1.34 WHIP. 65 Ks vs. 31 BBs in 41 IP.

2023 Minor League Transaction Thread

Thanks for this. There are lots of intriguing outfielders throughout the system, some of whom will hopefully shock us with 2024 breakouts. Carlos D. Rodriguez is still relatively young, but likely needs to either develop 10 HR power or become a basestealing threat. Jace Avina has turned his season around over the past 2 months, so should get a big opportunity in Wisconsin next year.

Hey, we let Toro bat. Now the big question: will we allow him to play in the field? Put him at 3B, shift Anderson to RF, Frelick to CF? More likely to put Taylor in CF… -

47 Ks vs. 11 BBs over last 2.5 months not appealing? -
Thank you for this article and similar ones on players at other positions. Taking another angle at this: 155 players have pitched for our minor league squads in 2023, including regulars, rehabbers, position players 100 players have thrown 20 innings or more Sorting those 100 by Batters Faced / Game, I'll take the top 45 on that list to zero in on Starting Pitchers. This includes guys like Eric Prado, TJ Shook and Jesus Rivero, but excludes players like James Meeker, Quinton Low and Aidan Maldonado Of these remaining 45 players, I'll sort by K/BB ratio and find: RHP Enniel Cortez - 17 - DSL ball - 44 Ks to 5 BBs. Wow. 1.55 ERA. 0.89 WHIP RHP Logan Henderson - ranked, not overlooked LHP Thomas Pannone - getting paid and hopefully having fun in Korea RHP Tobias Myers - 25 - AA - 123 Ks to 36 BBs. 5.47 ERA. 1.30 WHIP. Maybe we need to shift him to the bullpen? RHP Manuel Rodriguez - 18 - ACL - 34 Ks to 10 BBs. 4.35 ERA. 1.23 WHIP. He's the youngest pitcher that we have state-side. Listed at 6'2", so hopefully he'll find more velocity. Will he start next season in the ACL or at Low-A Carolina? RHP TJ Shook - 25 - AA - 81 Ks to 24 BBs. 5.48 ERA. 1.31 WHIP. Okay, these AA strikeout numbers are likely juiced by the pre-tacked balls used for over half the season RHP Edwin Jimenez - 21 - mainly High-A - 94 Ks to 29 BBs. 3.90 ERA. 1.19 WHIP. Just had two awesome outings in his last three appearances, going 7.1 IP each time LHP Anthony Flores - covered above RHP Melvin Hernandez - covered above LHP Robert Gasser - ranked, not overlooked Now re-ranking those 45 Starting Pitchers by WHIP: RHP Enniel Cortez RHP Logan Henderson - why has this man not yet been promoted to High-A? RHP Eric Prado - 17 - DSL - 1.70 ERA. 1.00 WHIP. 32 Ks vs. 14 BBs in 37 IP RHP Gabriel Colmenarez - 17 - DSL - 2.00 ERA. 1.03 WHIP. 24 Ks vs. 13 BBs in 36 IP. That's a pretty low K-rate, without a great K/BB ratio LHP Anthony Flores RHP Jesus Flores - just 21.1 IP LHP Thomas Pannone RHP Jesus Rivero - 20 - mainly Low-A - 3.21 ERA. 1.13 WHIP. 50 Ks vs. 18 BBs in 33.2 IP. Now we're talking RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez - ranked, not overlooked RHP Melvin Hernandez Now re-ranking those 45 Starting Pitchers by Strikeouts / Batters Faced: RHP Jesus Rivero RHP Logan Henderson RHP Jacob Misiorowski - ranked, not overlooked RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez RHP Daniel Corniel - 19 - ACL - 6.03 ERA. 1.66 WHIP. 47 Ks vs. 22 BBs. Our second youngest pitcher in ACL ball, but let's see some better results LHP Anthony Flores RHP Bryan Rivera - 18 - DSL - 3.94 ERA. 1.19 WHIP. 57 Ks vs. 23 BBs. One year too old for my liking, especially with that level of ERA RHP TJ Shook LHP Robert Gasser RHP Enniel Cortez So these would be my overlooked guys, although this leans toward younger players: Enniel Cortez Manuel Rodriguez Edwin Jimenez Anthony Flores Melvin Hernandez Eric Prado Jesus Rivero

It appears we’re intent on stretching out Eric Lauer: 67 pitches today after throwing 52 five days ago. He touched 94mph 4x in the first inning, 2x in the second inning, 1x in the third inning. The line: 3 1/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks. I see this as evidence that we’ve no intention of promoting not-yet Rule 5-eligible Robert Gasser this year, similar to how we had no intention of promoting not-yet Rule 5-eligible Sal Frelick last year.

Transactions: OF Luis Lara promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Gerson Calzadilla promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers RHP Yorman Galindez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers RHP Will Rudy placed on Low-A Carolina’s injured list (as of 8/12) RHP Aidan Maldonado placed on Low-A Carolina’s injured list (as of 8/14) INF Josh Adamczewski (15th round draft pick) assigned to ACL Brewers The switch-hitting Lara is just 18 years old and a joy to watch, giving 100% hustle in center field and on the bases, while demonstrating solid plate discipline. Let’s hope that he has an excellent final four weeks of the season in Appleton. Game Action: Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 2, ACL Reds 1 Box Score / Game Log Our Arizona men were in control throughout to improve to 30-21 on the season, though cashing in runs was a challenge. The team’s two youngest pitchers, 19-year old starting RHP Daniel Corniel (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks) and 18-year old Manuel Rodriguez (3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks) combined on 8 innings of 14-strikeout baseball. Corniel’s work is all the more impressive considering that the first two batters of the game reached base (single + error, bunt single) to put him in a first-and-third, nobody out situation. He deftly evaded damage via a strikeout, then a line out double play. The offense was led by left fielder Miguel Briceno (two singles, RBI in 2nd inning), SS Cooper Pratt (two singles, RBI in 6th inning, SB), C Alejandro Rodriguez (double, walk, run scored) and 2B Juan Baez (single, walk), although the squad stranded 11 baserunners vs. just 5 left-on-base for the Reds. 24-year old RHP Bayden Root earned his first save in his second game with a three-up, three-down 9th inning. Oddity you may only see at Rookie levels: the Reds apparently stopped having their right fielder bat half-way through the game, skipping the fifth spot in the order two times. The game also featured the organizational debut of 15th round draft pick INF Josh Adamczewski. The 18-year old led off, DH’d and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before being substituted. I’ve not seen any confirmation of playoff plans for the Arizona Complex League, but my guess is that the three division winners and one wildcard will square off next week. The ACL Brewers lead the ACL Central Division by five games over the Reds, with 5 games remaining for the Brewers and 7 games left for the Reds. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Guardians Blue 3, DSL Brewers-1 Squad 2 (in 10 innings) Box Score / Game Log The Uno young men nearly pulled out a victory despite the Guardians generating much more traffic on the bases – 8 Guardians’ hits vs. 4 Brewers’ hits, 10 Guardians left-on-base vs. 4 for the Brewers. The loss drops DSL Brewers-1 to a record of 24-23. Credit the duo of 17-year old RHPs Gabriel Colmenarez (4 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks, 1 WP; season ERA 2.00) and Eric Prado (4 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks; season ERA 1.70) with another effective day, with Colmenarez keeping the Guardians hitless through four innings. C Luis Garcia (double, walk, RBI), center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (single, walk) and Kevin Ereu (single, RBI) delivered three hits in the squad’s two-run 4th inning to grab a 2-1 lead, but the team only managed one hit and one walk from the 5th through 9th innings. After escaping a two-on, nobody out jam in the 9th inning, 20-year old RHP Yonawil Florimon nearly pulled off a similar feat in the 10th inning, but a wild pitch brought home a run with two outs in the top of the 9th inning. The offense then went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the 10th inning to strand the ghost runner at third base in defeat. Final: DSL Angels 4, DSL Brewers-2 Squad 0 Box Score / Game Log From a hitting, fielding and baserunning standpoint, the shutout loss by our Dos squad only gets worse as you delve further into the box score: three singles with no extra base hits no stolen bases, but one player was caught stealing and two more were picked off three errors four stolen bases allowed, with nobody caught. That said, the pitching staff only allowed two earned runs, with 18-year old RHP Bryan Rivera (4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 19-year old Aneuris Rodriguez (4 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 3 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks, 2 WP) combining for nine strikeouts in eight innings of decent work. 17-year old Pedro Ibarguen made his ninth start in center field, collecting a single and a walk to lift his season AVG to .307 and OPS to .853. 2B Luis Lameda exited the game early after a groundout in the 3rd inning, so we’ll try to monitor his availability. The loss drops DSL Brewers-2’s season record to 19-29. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Enjoy Tuesday’s 9-game slate, including two DSL doubleheaders to start the day! Mon. 8/14 - Next-to-Last Time for Monday Rookie Games
Ro Mueller replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
He opted for the Brewers over his university commitment. We may have quietly given him a signing bonus of up to $125,000 (hard to know how much), as the signing rules loosened in 2022. -
For the week, Nashville (4-2) and Carolina (4-2) were series winners, Wisconsin managed a 3-3 draw and Biloxi fought back but lost 4 of 6 games. Transactions: OF Skye Bolt activated from AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Indianapolis 4, Nashville 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Shut Out by Indy in Series Finale Nashville did not expect to be one-hit by 29-year old journeyman Beau Sulser and the Indians’ bullpen after Sulser struggled in Korea and gave up eight runs in his last outing, but that’s how this one played out. Even the Sounds’ one hit was weak: an infield grounder from 1B Keston Hiura in the top of the 4th inning when the game was still scoreless. Sounds’ Extras: RHP Caleb Boushley (4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) limited Indianapolis to one hit in the first three innings before conceding two singles and a 3-run homer to derail his outing. His fastball topped out at 90.1 mph. The Hiura single came just after 3B Tyler Black made another successful ball-strike challenge, converting a full-count strikeout into a walk. That was the only time a Sound got into scoring position in the game, as the Indians retired 14 straight Nashville batters at one point. After an 0-for-4 day with 2 strikeouts, DH/1B Rowdy Tellez is now 2-for-18 in five AAA games. Will the Brewers require him to continue his rehab work in the upcoming week? The bullpen of LHP Clayton Andrews and RHPs Jason Alexander and Trevor Megill were respectable, allowing one run over four innings, although Alexander allowed five baserunners. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (60-52) returns for some home cooking, as they host White Sox’ affiliate Charlotte (41-73). Perhaps RHP Colin Rea will get a start, which would be his first appearance since August 4 with the Brewers. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 14, Tennessee 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Freddy Zamora Grand Slam Powers Shuckers to 14-7 Win in Series Finale After escaping a bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the 1st inning, the Shuckers took advantage of three walks, with SS Freddy Zamora (3-for-4, HR, walk, 5 RBIs) blasting a grand slam for their first hit of the game. The Smokies made two comeback attempts, cutting the deficit to 6-4 in the 4th inning and 7-6 in the 6th inning before Biloxi’s seven-run 7th inning put the game to bed. C Jeferson Quero (2-for-4, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) was just 1-for-14 skid since his return from injury, but broke out of it in a big way: Walking and scoring in the 1st inning Smacking a two-run homer in the 3rd inning to extend Biloxi’s lead to 6-1 Singling in a run to increase the lead to 8-6 in the 7th inning You’ll find many more video highlights of the Shuckers’ offensive explosion at their Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Others with two-hit games included right fielder Carlos D. Rodriguez (plus 2 RBIs), left fielder Isaac Collins (plus a walk and SB) and C Brent Diaz (plus an RBI and walk). Starting RHP Christian Mejias (3 1/3 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 4 BB, 5 Ks, 1 WP) unfortunately struggled again, with his ERA now up to 7.24 in 97 innings pitched. This follows a seven-run, two-inning start five days earlier, but the K-rate (9.8 K/9) and age (24) suggest there may be something more to be tapped into. Kudos to RHPs Max Lazar and Ryan Brady for combining on two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Unfortunately, we’ll need to monitor the health of 1B Ernesto Martinez, who exited after walking and scoring in the 1st inning. He’s gotten off to a tremendous start since promotion to AA ball (1.171 OPS in 21 PAs), so we pray that nothing derails his momentum. Next week’s outlook: The Shuckers (55-53) head out to face the Mississippi Braves (49-57). RHP Jacob Misiorowski is the most likely starter for Tuesday’s series opener. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, Dayton 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Jimenez Pitches Rattlers Past Dayton As always for home games, we’re blessed with detailed video highlights along with the Mehring-Lobner post-game podcast. 21-year old RHP Edwin Jimenez (7 1/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) delivered his second exceptional performance in his last three starts, needing only 76 pitches to record 22 outs, before adding six pitches to the last batter he faced – a double which later scored to cut the Timber Rattlers’ lead to 3-1. All of Wisconsin’s runs came in the 1st inning, thanks to a double (1B Alex Hall), two singles (2B Mike Boeve, right fielder Hendry Mendez) and a walk (3B Brock Wilken). Wilken reached base three times in the game (two singles, walk). Timber Rattlers’ Extras: 23-year old RHP Shane Smith (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) only allowed two baserunners as he earned his third save in High-A ball, dropping his ERA at this level to 0.98 in 18 1/3 IP after recording a 2.59 ERA in 31 1/3 IP at Low-A earlier in the year. Let’s tip our cap to C Darrien Miller for gunning down the Dragons’ only attempted basestealer to end the top of the 8th inning after they’d tightened the game to 3-1. Former Brewers’ All-Star Corey Hart was on hand to deliver the ceremonial first pitch and hopefully impart some wisdom or serve as inspiration for the Rattlers and 5,372 fans in attendance. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (47-59) hits the road to take on Twins’ affiliate Cedar Rapids (66-42), with LHP Nathan Peterson (3.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 54 IP) scheduled to start the opening game on Tuesday. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Delmarva 8, Carolina 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: First-Place Mudcats Fall 8-4 in Finale to Delmarva At this point we expect Carolina to dominate every game and we’re somewhat surprised when they don’t. Despite reversing an early 2-0 disadvantage thanks to a three-run, three-hit 3rd inning, things unraveled for starting RHP Will Childers (5 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) in the top of the 5th inning: bunt single, walk, walk, grand slam. Mudcats’ Extras: 1B Jesus Chirinos is ready for a second crack at High-A ball if the Brewers will give it to him, putting up a 3-for-4 day with a double, walk, 2 RBIs and no strikeouts. Left fielder Jace Avina (single, 2 walks) and C Blayberg Diaz (2 singles) also had productive days at the plate. 2B Dylan O’Rae also stole his first base since his recent promotion. For Diaz, the field was a bit of a nightmare, however, conceding seven stolen bases (vs. one caught stealing) and committing two errors. Balls simply weren’t falling in for center fielder Luis Lara on this day: 0-for-5 with no strikeouts. His line drive out with two runners on to end the 6th inning (still trailing 6-4) was Carolina’s last decent chance to turn the game around. Relief RHPs Jeferson Figueroa and Jeison Pena delivered scoreless outings, but RHP Aidan Maldonado (1 IP, 2 R) is still trying to find his mojo after an up-and-down year. Next week’s outlook: The Mudcats (60-45) travel to face White Sox affiliate Kannapolis (55-52). RHPs Alexander Vallecillo and Jesus Rivero are likely to tag-team the opening game. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Monday will be a light day again, with the DSL squads in action at 10:00am CST and the ACL Brewers playing at 8:00pm, while even the Milwaukee Brewers will have the day off.
