  1. Keston Hiura showing some defensive capability:
  2. Jace Avina continues to crush it. Mudcats lead 2-1 early, with Luis Lara walking and ultimately coming around on a sac fly.
  3. 25-year old RHP Evan McKendry (4.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 in 96.2 IP) makes his Brewers’ organizational debut in AAA Nashville against his former Durham teammates. RF Tyler Naquin has hit safely in his last 13 starts.
  4. The Low-A Mudcats lead their series in Fayetteville 2-1 and have 20-year old RHP Patricio Aquino ready to continue his terrific season (2.79 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 9.1 K/9 in 61.1 IP). LF Jace Avina has a 9-game on-base streak and we’re relieved to see 3B Luke Adams right back in the lineup after exiting yesterday’s game early.
  5. 2023 first round draft pick 3B Brock Wilken makes his full season affiliate debut with the High-A Timber Rattlers, who are tied 1-1 in their series in South Bend. RHP Alexander Cornielle looks to continue his recent run of form (2.08 ERA with 19 Ks in last 17.1 IP).
  6. - INF Abraham Toro optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - RHP Trevor Megill optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers
  7. - RHP Ryan Birchard (5th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - LHP Tate Kuehner (7th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - LHP Mark Manfredi (9th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Morris Austin (10th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Brett Wichrowski (13th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Ryne Moore assigned to ACL Brewers (essentially extended rehab)
  8. We seem to be winding his work down: 45 pitches on July 21, 72 pitches on July 27, 8 days before next start on August 4. My guess: he gets a cup of coffee (2 starts) in AAA in the final two weeks of September.
  9. For reliever promotions, I'm still scarred from the Luke Barker days... But yeah, I was thinking that Yerlin Rodriguez and Chase Costello could/should merit looks in High-A, with any of 26-year old Sam Gardner, 25-year old Justin King (struggling a bit since injury return, but still K'ing guys and we can blame the recent .474 BABIP), 25-year old Nick Merkel, 24-year old Tanner Shears, 23-year old Karlos Moralas or 23-year old Shane Smith being promoted to AA Biloxi.
  10. We're all twiddling our thumbs, waiting on: Black, Chourio and Quero to AAA Woessner, Martinez, Miller and an outfielder to AA Wilken, Adams (don't be hurt, don't be hurt, don't be hurt), Lara, Sibrian and Henderson to High-A Boeve, O'Rae and Baez to Low-A Wilken didn't play yesterday, so maybe that's a sign that his promotion will be announced today. Woessner is scheduled to pitch for the Rattlers on Friday, but we've got to be tired of thrusting Meeker, Shook, Bennett and now Lazar into short rest starts for Biloxi.
  11. Box score shenanigans! Yeah, the powers that be corrected themselves. Pratt exited, not Baez. Then Bitonti also exited for a pinch hitter, so it’s clear these were planned early exits for their debut games. Pay that man his money…er…promote that (Baez) man to Low-A!
  12. Baez added a single and stolen base in the 5th inning, then comes out for a defensive replacement. Hopefully he’s being promoted (along with Wilken, Boeve and O’Rae); not injured nor stuck dominating ACL ball for the rest of the season. The lead is down to 4-3 though, with 1 1/2 scheduled innings to play.
  13. Pratt doubles in a run for a 3-hit debut! Bitonti grounds out in his 3rd at-bat. Juan Baez is having a heckuva game. Solo home run. Caught two line-outs at 3rd base. Caught a foul pop and threw to 2nd base to trigger a runner being caught in a run-down for a double play. Lined out his first time up. ACL Brewers lead 4-1 in the 5th inning.
  14. Yerlin Rodriguez collects the 4-out save as the Mudcats win 5-2. His work included stranding 2 baserunners of Tyler Wehrle. Together, they combined on 5 scoreless innings. This could be a great win, but instead we wait to find out whether that 2nd HBP of the day will cost Luke Adams some time.
  15. In their 2nd time up, Pratt singled again and Bitonti flied out. Still 1-1 in the 3rd inning of this 7-inning ACL affair.
  16. After trailing 8-1 with a poorly defended 8-run 2nd inning, Biloxi got 4 runs back via a Wes Clarke grand slam in the 5th inning. That’s his 15th homer of the year, though we still trail 9-5.
  17. Adams exited for a defensive replacement to start the bottom half of that inning. The man should be in High-A. God, please don’t let this derail the plan.
  18. Organizational debuts for 3rd round pick Eric Bitonti and 6th round pick Cooper Pratt with the ACL Brewers. Pratt drew the lucky straw and is playing shortstop. Bitonti DHing. Brock Wilken is not in the lineup - could he be on his way to Wisconsin or Carolina? Juan Baez shifted over to 3rd base, as expected. In their first plate appearances, Pratt reached on an infield single (scoring on a Mike Boeve single - why is Boeve still in Arizona?) and Bitonti K’d. 1-1 game early.
  19. After playing 3 games in the ACL, Cubs’ 13th overall pick Matt Shaw is playing shortstop in High-A ball against the Timber Rattlers. The Rattlers lead 3–1 in the 7th inning, with RHP Cameron Wagoner registering 7 Ks in 6 innings. 3B Eduardo Garcia had an RBI triple and scored on a sac fly.
  20. Traded just yesterday, Alex Jackson is Durham’s starting catcher today, batting 5th. He homered off Caleb Boushley in his first plate appearance. Nashville C Payton Henry responded with a 2-run shot in the next half-inning. Sounds lead 2-1, now in the 3rd inning.
  21. RHP Max Lazar (2.96 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 54.2 IP) gets his first start of 2023 as he seeks to lead AA Biloxi to a 2-0 series lead in Pensacola. 1B Tyler Black has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games.
  22. The Low-A Mudcats are tied 1-1 in this week's series in Fayetteville and RHP Quinton Low (4.23 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 12.7 K/9 in 27.2 IP) gets the start today. 3B Luke Adams has a 1.119 OPS in 73 PAs during his 16-game on-base streak.
  23. AAA Nashville looks for a 2-0 series lead at home against Durham. RHP Caleb Boushley (4.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 in 95 IP) aims to earn his 7th win. 3B Patrick Dorrian has an 8-game hitting streak to lift his season OPS to .821.
  24. High-A Wisconsin needs a win to even their series in South Bend 1-1. RHP Cameron Wagoner (7.53 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 in 69.1 IP) gets the start today. 2B Jose Acosta will try to homer for the 3rd straight game.
  25. Boushley (Nashville) and McKendry (then-Durham) were originally scheduled to face each other today. Now it’s Boushley for Nashville today, McKendry for Nashville tomorrow against his former teammates. The schedule is also showing Woodruff penciled in to start on Sunday, but that’s more likely to be Fernandez or Alexander.
