2023 Arizona Fall League Thread
Ro Mueller replied to Ro Mueller's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Surprise lost a second straight game, this one 5-1 to Salt River, thus catapulting Salt River (now 9-5) to first place and dropping Surprise (now 8-6) to 4th place in the 6-team league, though they're actually just one game apart in the tight standings. Box score. Three Brewers' position players and one relief pitcher all had respectable efforts, although the Saguaros could have really used some extra base hits (Salt River 4 XBHs, Surprise 0): 1B Wes Clarke - 1-for-3 - single, walk SS Eric Brown Jr. - 1-for-4 - single, 6th stolen base of the season RF Hendry Mendez - 1-for-4 - single RHP Justin Yeager - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks - threw 19 pitches (12 strikes) in the top of the 9th inning. The walk came on a full count and the hit was a single- 133 replies

2023 - 2024 Winter League Thread
Ro Mueller replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
In the Mexican League, the only current Brewers' player that I've noted thus far is LHP Jesus Broca, who just turned 20 years old yesterday. He's playing for Algodoneros de Guasave and has already put in one fine performance, starting Sunday's game which his team ultimately won: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks. The Brewers signed Broca on July 15, 2023 and he pitched in two games for DSL Brewers-2 after appearing in 8 games in the independent Mexican League this summer. -

The four most popular Winter Leagues in Latin America are commencing at about this time: Mexico - started on October 13 Dominican Republic - October 19 Venezuela - October 21 Puerto Rico - November 3 We oftentimes can only see which Brewers' minor leaguers (plus a few major leaguers) are participating by checking the various team rosters when the games actually commence, although some snippets may pop up on Twitter or elsewhere. -
Australian Baseball League - 2023/2024

Who are we thinking might participate this year? INF Mike Boeve? - following in Robert Moore's footsteps? C Matt Wood? - or did he log too many innings behind the plate this season? Could we see Blayberg Diaz or Satchell Norman in his place? 1B Tayden Hall, SS Eduardo Garcia or any of OFs Luis Castillo, Terence Doston, Hedbert Perez or Eduarqui Fernandez could make sense, after dealing with injuries or relatively limited playing time in 2023. On the mound, I'd look for the likes of LHP Brandon Knarr (if healthy), LHP Brian Fitzpatrick, RHP Jeferson Figueroa, RHP Aidan Maldonado, etc. -
Now an annual tradition, the Brewers will once again be sending several minor league prospects Down Under to play for the Brisbane Bandits, whose season will run from November 17 to January 21 (plus playoffs, if applicable). We can use this thread for all things Aussie Baseball-related.

2023 Arizona Fall League Thread

The Brewers' contingent have been clutch contributors for several victories, but Monday was unfortunately the reverse, as the Saguaros blew a 7-2 lead, ultimately falling 10-8 in extra innings to Mesa. Box score. LHP Adam Seminaris got the start, but only lasted two innings: 2 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks. RHP Joseph Hernandez will unfortunately be pointed to as the main culprit in the collapse, conceding 5 runs in the 6th inning: 1.2 IP, 5 ER, 6 H (including 2 HR), 1 BB, 1 K. Down to their final strike in the bottom of the 9th inning, Mesa tied the game on an RBI single. Then LHP Justin King entered for the bottom of the 10th inning, getting ahead of Cubs' prospect Kevin Alcantara 0-and-2 before conceding a walk-off 2-run homer to end it. Yes, King only threw 3 pitches in the game. Offensively, SS Eric Brown Jr. got another start, contributing 2 singles and a stolen base: 2-for-4. He's now batting .333 with a .905 OPS in a solid AFL campaign thus far.- 133 replies

Pretty solid day in Surprise’s 5-2, seven inning win over Mesa. Box score. 2B Eric Brown Jr. pulled off an EBJ special: walk, SB, SB inducing an error to score. Also doubled. 1B Wes Clarke walked in the game’s first run. Also drew another walk later. RHP Justin Yeager struck out 2 of 4 batters faced in a scoreless inning. 11 of his 12 pitches registered as strikes. RF Hendry Mendez also went 1-for-3.- 133 replies

Taylor Rogers gave up earned runs in 8 of his last 12 games before joining the Brewers. We’d have been better off without him, maybe just putting a claim on LHP Angel Perdomo instead and getting a bat. It was also bizarre to me that we weren’t willing to use Ruiz as an MLB pinch runner during that 2022 stretch run. Oh well. Matt Arnold flipping Ruiz for Contreras, Payamps and Yeager was beyond masterful. Then the team turning Payamps into a top reliever was amazing. Hopefully Gasser is our next star MLB pitcher.

A solid 7-6 come-from-behind win on Thursday for the Surprise Saguaros over Salt River improves their record to 6-4 and puts them in second place in the 6-team AFL. Box score. Down 5-3, the Saguaros tied the game in the 6th inning, then took the lead for good on a 1B Wes Clarke (1-for-4 in this game; .321 AVG, 1.174 OPS overall) RBI double in the 7th inning. Hendry Mendez also started in left field, going 0-for-1, walking twice and scoring the game-tying run in the 6th inning.- 133 replies

I'd imagine that the relative success of Colin Rea and Julio Teheran in 2023, coupled with uncertainty surrounding Burnes, Woodruff and Ashby going into 2024, should make the Brewers a relatively attractive destination for starting pitchers who struggled in 2023 and face the prospect of having to sign a minor league contract for a chance to bounce back in 2024. I ran some numbers to identify 10 pitchers who may fit this profile: Noah Syndergaard Adrian Sampson - injured most of 2023 Spencer Turnbull (e.g. if he's non-tendered) Luke Weaver Chris Flexen Madison Bumgarner Mike Minor - didn't pitch in 2023 Michael Pineda - didn't pitch in 2023 Joe Ross - severely limited by injuries in 2022-23 Danny Duffy - injured most of 2022, only played in minors in 2023

2023 Arizona Fall League Thread

Brewers reps played key parts in enabling Surprise to grab a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning: SS Eric Brown Jr. singled in the second run, then RF Hendry Mendez reached on a fielders' choice which combined with an error to three runs to score. The squad ultimately won 17-5 over Scottsdale, but the story of the game was Rangers' catcher Liam Hicks going 6-for-6 (all singles). Box score. Brown (3-for-5, double, walk, 4 RBIs) also singled in a run in the 5th inning, doubled in two more runs in the 8th inning and was part of three double plays on defense. Mendez (1-for-6, 2 RBIs) also singled in a run in the 6th inning and had an error in the field. RHP Justin Yeager's apparently on a mission to throw lots of strikes as he builds back strength from an injury that wiped out most of his 2023 season: 21 pitches, 15 strikes. 1 IP, 0 ER, a single and a full-count walk. No Ks.- 133 replies

Yeah, but I’ll forever say that it didn’t make sense to burn that final option, especially with a 26-man roster. It reduced roster flexibility for ourselves in 2023 and also reduced Keston’s value to other teams at 2022 trade deadline and thereafter. But it’s done. And it wasn’t as bad as DFAing Troy O’Leary years ago. Maybe a lesson has been learned. Glad he played hard all year in AAA in 2023. Good luck to him.

There was a thought that Hiura was still one season short of MILB free agency, in part because he’d spent the entire 2020 season on the MLB roster. Who knows? Perhaps 2020 is given some sort of dual status. We still could have selected his contract if we truly wanted to work something out. So ridiculous that we didn’t trade him in July 2022 (1.026 OPS in last 44 PAs (.500 BABIP, 16 Ks) before inexplicably burning final option).

This may be the first indication that we could avoid Super-2 games with Tyler Black. I’d been a bit pessimistic on the timing of Black and Gasser promotions.

I figure the Royals (didn’t have a proper DH in 2023), Tigers (replacing HOF Miguel Cabrera) or Giants (replacing Joc Pederson). I wonder if Keston will take some guaranteed money (e.g. $1.1m) or sign an all-or-nothing minor league deal for potentially more money (e.g. $2.3m).

Thank you for this. Apparently, our offense wasn’t good enough, even with Donaldson, Canha and Santana, who were temporary adds that we are unlikely to keep & pay for a full season. And now we have probably lost Woodruff for some extended period of time, so our 2024 pitching will unfortunately likely be worse than our 2023 pitching. I believe our best hope of even making the 2024 playoffs is to keep Burnes and Adames around for the first 4 months of the year, having at least 2 bats equivalent to Donaldson/Canha/Santana and also keeping Miley and Houser. We’d still sell off Burnes and Adames in July 2024 and it may even be a mass exodus if we play terribly from April-July, but this is the most viable route to the playoffs that I can see.

2023 Arizona Fall League Thread
Ro Mueller replied to Ro Mueller's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
1B Wes Clarke singled home the game's first run with 2 outs in the 1st inning, then his 3-run blast with 2 outs in the 4th inning extended Surprise's lead to 4-0. For the game, he went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a walk. 24-year old LHP Adam Seminaris (acquired in the Hunter Renfroe trade, but injured for about 2/3rds of 2023) had one of his best outings ever, facing the minimum number of batters (12) over 4 innings (2nd through 5th frames), while striking out 7. He did concede one single, who was eliminated via a ground ball double play. His domination earned him the Win. Like Seminaris, 23-year old RHP Joseph Hernandez (acquired for Justin Topa, but also injured for about 2/3rs of 2023) also made his first appearance of the Arizona Fall League, but struggled with control: 2 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 4 BB, 2 Ks). RF Hendry Mendez had a late double in a 1-for-4 performance with one K. Surprise won 7-2. Box score.- 133 replies
