C Jose Sibrian’s 2nd inning solo shot gave the Mudcats their first lead since June 23rd. RHP Will Childers pitched an excellent 5 innings (1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) and CF Luis Lara singled and scored in the 6th inning to restore the 1-run lead (2-1). And now SS Jadher Areinamo has an RBI single in the 7th inning for a 3-1 advantage. Go Mudcats!

AA Biloxi leads their home series 2-1 over Mississippi and has RHP Tobias Myers (5.21 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 65.2 IP) making his 14th start (15th appearance) tonight. SS Freddy Zamora just delivered an .857 OPS in June.

High-A Wisconsin is looking for a win in Quad Cities today to give them a 3-1 series lead. Starting RHP Edwin Jimenez aims to bounce back from two tough games (3.23 season ERA, but 10 ER in last 10 IP). C Darrien Miller has a 12-game on-base streak.

Low-A Carolina sends RHP Will Childers (4.97 ERA with 10 Ks in 12.2 IP) to the hill for his 2nd start (5th appearance), as they need a win to avoid a 4-0 series deficit at Down East. 3B Luke Adams (team-leading .827 OPS; 2nd most walks in 12-team Carolina League) is back in the lineup after a day off.

DSL Brewers-1 is giving Dodgers Mega a battle, heading to their 3rd extra inning. An error and wild pitch helped them score 2 runs in the first extra inning, then 17-year old INF Gery Holguin logged a 2-out, 2-run double to tie the game again in the second extra inning. Fingers crossed for some pitching and luck.

How funny/sad would it be if some team about to play a series against the Brewers claims LHP Pannone and starts him against us? As it stands, I hope he scales through and voluntarily accepts an assignment back to AAA, similar to Alex Claudio earlier this year.

It’s been tough sledding for 3B/1B Zavier Warren at Biloxi this year: - April OPS - .600 - May OPS - .574 - June OPS - .488 But the .200 season BABIP suggests a LOT of bad luck. If INF Eduardo Garcia is sidelined for a bit (hopefully he’s not), maybe Warren could spend a few weeks mashing for Wisconsin before returning to Biloxi.

While Biloxi, Wisconsin and Carolina get mauled tonight… Nashville’s 8 games over .500, with someone different stepping up each evening. Tonight, it’s Patrick Dorrian with a 3-run homer in the 4th inning to put ‘em in front 3-1. Go Sounds!

Nightmare start for Wisconsin: walk, triple, single, homer off Woessner before recording an out. Down 4-0. Then 3B Eduardo Garcia exited 2 plays later after being injured recording a 5-3 ground ball out. All in the bottom of the 1st inning. After losing Fernandez to injury and Lazar to promotion, the active roster was already down to 26 players (vs. 30 standard). The team may end up having to promote some players from Carolina whether they’re ready or not.

AAA Nashville can also take a 3-0 series lead with a victory at Memphis tonight. RHP Jason Alexander aims for a 2nd straight solid rehab start (4.2 scoreless innings last outing). 6’1” Cam Devanney, who’s 9-for-his-last-21 with 6 extra base hits, gets a start at first base.

According to the game notes, RHP James Meeker has the lowest % BB rate in the whole of the minor leagues (min, 30 innings). He makes his 2nd spot start tonight as Biloxi tries to go up 3-0 in their home series against Mississippi. DH/C Wes Clarke has an .883 OPS over the past 41 games (169 PAs).

By contrast, the High-A Timber Rattlers target a 5th straight win tonight, playing at Quad Cities. RHP Tyler Woessner (2.70 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 66 2/3 IP) gets the start and 2B Robert Moore comes in with a 17-game on-base streak.

The Low-A Mudcats, who trail their series 2-0 at Down East, send RHP Alexander Vallecillo (3.33 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 11.1 K/9 in 24 1/3 IP) to the mound to turn their luck around. With a .782 OPS in this month of June, 20-year old DH/OF Hedbert Perez moves up to second in the batting order.

The offense was largely provided by 26-year old SS Cam Devanney (2-for-3, 2 HRs, SF, 4 RBIs), whose solo homer gave Nashville a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning, followed by a two-run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning to push the advantage to 4-1. Sounds’ Extras: Already on the 40-man roster, Junk may not be a fireballer (just 47 Ks in 75 2/3 IP this year), but he’s getting the job done for the Sounds (3.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, team-lead in innings pitched). Passed over by 29 teams in last offseason’s pitcher-heavy Rule 5 draft, Devanney’s making an even stronger case this time around with a 1.057 OPS in his last 82 plate appearances, after starting the year slowly due to injury. MLB call-up watch: 1B Keston Hiura and 3B Abraham Toro each collected two singles and a walk, while center fielder Sal Frelick had a single in four at-bats. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor manned right field for his first action since June 1st, going 0-for-5 but contributed by throwing out a runner to end the 1st inning. And RHP Abner Uribe (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) topped 100mph five times in his one inning of fabulous relief work, while RHP JB Bukauskas (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) also pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Friday’s outlook: If he can replicate his last outing (4 2/3 scoreless innings five days ago) with a solid start tonight, RHP Jason Alexander will certainly strengthen his case to be added to the 40-man MLB roster when he comes off the 60-day injured list shortly. RHP Robbie Baker (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) helped Jarvis escape the 5th inning by delivering a strikeout, then covered an additional 1 2/3 innings, though conceded a homer to Drew Lugbauer (26 years old; .996 OPS – c’mon Braves, promote the man). After RHP Zach Vennaro struggled (1/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 0 H, 2 BBs, 2 HBPs, 1 K), LHPs Luis Amaya (Biloxi debut) and Ryan Middendorf were terrific in relief, combining on two scoreless innings, with Amaya striking out three batters. Friday’s outlook: 28-year old RHP James Meeker (2.41 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 11.3 K/9 in 37 1/3 IP) is due to make his second straight start, after 16 relief appearances to commence the year. He’s reached 56 and 54 pitches in his last two outings, as we try to decipher whether this is an actual experiment (i.e. converting him to a starter) or simply a case of Manager Mike Guerrero managing limited starting pitching depth. He lowered his season ERA to 6.59 in what has been a rather frustrating year thus far. Cruz left the game with a 1-0 lead, which SS Eric Brown Jr. (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) added to in the 8th inning with his third home run of 2023, a 2-run shot. From there, Wisconsin held on for dear life, as RHP Brannon Jordan (2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) was not his usual sharp self, handing over to RHP Tanner Shears (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 0 Ks, 1 WP) who closed out the game with a bunt force out and ground ball double play. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: The middle innings were covered by RHP Alexander Cornielle (2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K), in his first appearance in 25 days. He was limited to 40 pitches, though the team will be thrilled to have effective starter available. The Timber Rattlers only notched five hits and walked twice, with no player reaching base twice. 1B Ernesto Martinez (1-for-3, RBI) had a key game, however, singling in a run in the 3rd inning, then gunning down the lead runner at third base for the first out of the bottom of the 9th inning. River Bandit Manager and ex-Brewers infielder Brooks Conrad did not agree with the call and was ejected. The eight strikeouts were a season high for Cruz, lifting his season K/9 rate to 8.0 (vs. 10.7 last year), which hopefully bodes well for future success. We also note that DH/C Matt Wood was back in the starting lineup, despite leaving Wednesday’s game in the 3rd inning. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Dodgers Mega 5, DSL Brewers #2 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log Our Dos youngsters fell to their fifth straight loss in this 7-inning contest, dropping their record to 7-11. Starting 16-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 2 WPs; season ERA 1.93) put in a respectable performance, conceding only one earned run in spite of the six hits and exiting with his team down 2-1. However, a 4-for-23 day at the plate with one double and one walk was not enough to get the job done. Key signing 17-year old 2B/SS Filippo Di Turi (2-for-3; season OPS .864) singled twice, but was caught stealing and also picked off base. 19-year old C Eric Martinez (1-for-3, double; season OPS .781) notched the double and scored the team’s only run. Final: DSL White Sox 6, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 1 Box Score / Game Log The young Uno men dropped their third straight game, falling to a 10-8 record thus far. Similar to their DSL-2 brethren, 18-year old starting RHP Jose Meneses (4 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks; season ERA 2.70) navigated traffic to make the game competitive, but the offensive performance was lacking – e.g. 3-for-31 at the plate. Meneses exited with the game tied 1-1. That said, I’m blaming lightning at least in part for this loss, as 17-year old RHP Eric Prado’s (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) relief outing was cut short after just one inning due to a one hour and five minute game delay. Prado had thrown five scoreless innings in his last appearance (see video from prior outings below). 20-year old RHP Yonawil Florimon walked four batters and threw a wild pitch in two innings of work, though he only conceded one run and zero hits. The game really got away due to a four-run 8th inning off of 22-year old RHP Roman Perez, who walked three, hit one batter and threw five wild pitches in just 2/3rds of an inning. Offensively, the team did manage to collect 7 walks, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. 17-year old center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (2-for-4, double) was the bright spot, doubling and singling, though he was caught stealing.
