  1. It was a terrific day across most of the Brewers’ system, as teams won six of seven games and the Mudcats welcomed OF Luis Lara back to a lineup in desperate need. Only Wisconsin fell in a tough one-run affair. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 5, Gwinnett 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Devanney's Heroics Gives Sounds Third-Straight Win Over Stripers After not pitching for eight days, a refreshed RHP Caleb Boushley limited contact in keeping the Stripers off the board through the first five innings, while a tie-breaking 2-run blast from 2B Cam Devanney delivered the Sounds’ third straight victory at home over Gwinnett. Take a gander at the Sounds’ Twitter feed to see Devanney’s homer, a confident LHP Clayton Andrews strut off the mound after cleaning up danger in the 8th inning and other highlights. Sounds’ Extras: SS Brice Turang and 3B Mike Brosseau are starting to find their stroke, hitting homers in the 5th and 6th innings to give Nashville a 3-0 lead. After starting the season late due to injury, then understandably struggling over his first month, 2B Cam Devanney has found his groove since May 24th, connecting on a first pitch, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to win the game. Rehabbing RHP Matt Bush and AAA debutant RHP Abner Uribe struggled with walks and an error each, which enabled Gwinnett to tie the game at 3-3 by the 8th inning. Thankfully LHP Clayton Andrews had less difficulty, stranding two runners in the 8th inning and earning the 4-out save. Friday’s outlook: LHP Eric Lauer will make his first start since being optioned to AAA ball, after two difficult rehab outings with the Sounds (4 2/3 IP, 7 ER, 12 H, 4 BB, 6 Ks). Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 6, Montgomery 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Twirl Seventh Shutout of the Year to Win Third Straight RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, LHP Ryan Middendorf and RHP James Meeker were dominant in the 2-hit, 3-walk, 12-K shutout, with no Montgomery playing even reaching third base in the game, giving Biloxi a 2-0 series lead on the road. Leading the team in most offensive categories, 3B Tyler Black got the party started with a 3rd inning RBI double and added a solo homer to lead off the 5th inning, while Isaac Collins came through with a clutch 2-out, 2-run single in the 4th inning. Shuckers’ Extras: We’ll set the concern-o-meter at 2 of 10 for Rodriguez, who exited at just 60 pitches after two walks in the 4th inning. Fanatic watcher wiguy94 commented in the daily forum that no trainer visited the mound, so the current assumption is that this was a planned short start. Back in the comfort of AA hall after a rough 10-game stint at AAA Nashville (7.71 ERA), Middendorf stranded those two baserunners, allowing just one of six batters to reach base (a harmless walk). Four innings, no runs, eight Ks, no walks was exceptional from Meeker, achieved in just 56 pitches (a season high). Friday’s outlook: The Shuckers and Biscuits have a rare doubleheader to make up an earlier rainout, with RHP Justin Jarvis (2.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 in 62 2/3 IP) starting one of the games. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Great Lakes 3, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Loons Edge Rattlers 3-2 The Timber Rattlers battled but lost their second straight one-run game at Great Lakes to fall behind 2-1 in this week’s series. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Starting RHP Cameron Wagoner has been markedly better over his last 3 games, but 3 runs in 5 innings is still a 5.40 ERA, so there remains room for improvement. 24-year old LHP Luis Amaya (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) continues to impress as a multi-inning reliever, averaging nearly 40 pitches per outing. As close as the game appears, Wisconsin only had one batter make it as far as second base over the game’s final seven innings. Coming away with just two runs on their 5 singles and 3 walks in the first two innings was a missed opportunity. Friday’s outlook: It’s been a rough season thus far for RHP Stiven Cruz (6.91 ERA in 43 IP), who now faces the task of turning it around against one of the top minor league clubs Great Lakes (41-18 season record). Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Augusta 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Aquino Totals 7 Ks in Streak Snapping Victory Center fielder Luis Lara returned to action after missing most of the Mudcats’ 8-game losing streak, as the team erupted for 14 hits in support of a terrific start from RHP Patricio Aquino (4 1/3 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks). Mudcats’ Extras: Lara was a willing spark plug for the offense, walking and stealing a base in the 1st inning, singling and scoring in the 3rd inning and doubling in 4th inning as the Mudcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Don’t look now, but 20-year old Aquino just lowered his ERA to 1.82 after retiring 13 of 14 batters, placing him 6th in the 12-team Carolina League (min. 30 IP). Every spot in the lineup grabbed at least one hit, with five players notching two hits. Of particular note, SS Gregory Barrios had a triple, single, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Vallecillo (1.35 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 11.7 K/9 in 20 IP) is scheduled to start as Carolina aims to even the series 2-2. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 6, ACL Angels 5 Box Score / Game Log Our young men in Arizona improved to 6-2 in this 7-inning affair, bolting out to a 6-1 lead through four innings before nearly giving it all back in the top of the 5th inning. ACL Brewers’ Extras: 20-year old RHP Jesus Rivero (4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks) had a terrific outing in his first start (second appearance) of the year, lifting his season strikeout total to an eye-popping 13 in just 8 1/3 innings pitched. 18-year old RH reliever Daniel Corniel commenced poorly (single, two hit-by-pitches, 3-run homer) before retiring eight of the last nine batters. Every spot in the lineup was productive (led by 22-year old center fielder Reidy Mercado and rehabbing 3B Josh VanMeter combining on four hits and an RBI), with seven batters collecting hits, one walking twice and the remaining batter grabbing an RBI. Don’t be surprised if Mercado makes his way to Carolina soon and VanMeter re-joins the Nashville squad. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 11, DSL Giants Orange 8 Box Score / Game Log A 7-run first inning on six singles and three walks put the Dos Squad in a comfortable position, but the game was 10-7 by the 5th inning as they had to hang on to improve their season record to 4 -4. SS Roderick Flores, big-money signing 2B Filippo Di Turi and 3B Luis Lameda provided most of the offense, combining to go 8-for-13 with a double, two walks, and eight(!) RBIs. On the mound, 16-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 0 Ks) made his second start, exiting with a comfortable 8-2 lead after three innings, while 18-year old RHP Justin Caceres (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) overcame steady traffic to lock down the final three innings to earn the save. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 5, DSL Angels 2 Box Score / Game Log The Uno boys continued their hot start, improving to 6-2 on the back of terrific pitching from 18-year old LHP Jose Meneses (3 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks) and 17-year old RHP Eric Prado (4 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 6 Ks). At the plate, SS Joan Gutierrez continues to show why he’s atop the batting order, reaching base three times to set the tone. 2B Luiyin Alastre added two doubles, but the franchise bosses may be most excited about $1.5 million bonus center fielder Yophery Rodriguez (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI) hitting his first home run in the Brewers’ organization. 3. 18-year old CF Luis Lara returns from injury for his first game in 8 days, as Low-A Carolina will try to end its 8-game skid and cut its series deficit to 2-1 in Augusta. RHP Patricio Aquino (2.08 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 8.9 K/9 in 30.1 IP) gets the start.
  4. The AA Shuckers lead their series 1-0 in Montgomery and have solid 21-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (3.54 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 12.5 K/9 in 53.1 IP) starting tonight. DH/C/1B Wes Clarke is on a solid run (.894 OPS in last 123 PAs).
  5. AAA Nashville is up 2 games to 0 at home against Gwinnett and gives RHP Caleb Boushley (4.88 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 55.1 IP) his first action in 8 days. 1B Patrick Dorrian has a .983 OPS in his last 106 PAs.
  6. High-A Wisconsin lost a close one yesterday at Great Lakes. They’ll try to claim a 2-1 series lead behind RHP Cameron Wagoner (4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP in last 2 starts) today. SS Robert Moore has a .794 OPS over his last 13 games (58 PAs).
  7. - RHP Robert Stock released by AAA Nashville
  8. The Shuckers seek a second straight win in Montgomery, with LHP Russell Smith (4.73 ERA in 26.2 IP) making his 2nd start (13th appearance) of the season tonight. 19-year old CF Jackson Chourio seems to be figuring out AA ball (.967 OPS in last 74 PAs).
  9. It’s time for RHP Jacob Misiorowski’s second start for High-A Wisconsin, this one at Great Lakes as they seek a 2-0 series lead. Last week, Misiorowski gave up zero earned runs in 5.1 IP with 7 Ks. After a rough start (.390 OPS in first 52 PAs), C Darrien Miller has turned things around (.811 OPS in last 107 PAs).
  10. Yes, AAA Nashville leads their home series against Gwinnett 1-0 and welcomes back 23-year old CF Sal Frelick for his first AAA game since April 18. Today’s start goes to LHP Thomas Pannone (3.24 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 8.0 K/9 in 41.2 IP).
  11. Low-A Carolina has the early game today and needs to end its 7-game losing streak. RHP Logan Henderson (2.16 ERA with 24 Ks in 16.2 IP) gets the start today, LF Hedbert Perez has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games.
  12. Unfortunately there’s no succor for the wounded Low-A Mudcats, whose roster is unchanged as they take on Braves’ affiliate Augusta. RHP Quinton Low (1.74 ERA with 18 Ks in 10.1 IP) makes his 6th appearance. Time to break a 6-game skid.
  13. AA Biloxi is on the road this week to take on Rays’ affiliate Montgomery. RHP Christian Mejias (5.36 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 50.1 IP) starts the series opener. 22-year old 3B Tyler Black leads the Southern League in stolen bases (33) and walks (45) in his 48 games played.
  14. AAA Nashville hosts Braves’ affiliate Gwinnett this week, with LHP Robert Gasser (4.66 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 56 IP) getting tonight’s start. Rehabbing OF/DH Jesse Winker is making a case for another MLB shot (2 HRs, 3 BBs, 2 Ks in 12 PAs).
  15. High-A Wisconsin is in Midland, Michigan to take on Dodgers’ affiliate Great Lakes. RHP Edwin Jimenez (2.09 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 47.1 IP) makes his 5th start (12th appearance). 20-year old Eduardo Garcia continues to man the shortstop position as the team awaits Eric Brown Jr.’s return from injury.
  16. Adam McCalvy wrote an article indicating that Misiorowski will likely start in Great Lakes tomorrow (Wednesday), then make his home Appleton debut on Tuesday, June 20th.
  17. 10 stolen bases (vs. 0 CS) for the ACL Brewers, including 4 for Juan Baez (1.218 OPS). 2 HRs, 6 RBIs for Jhonny Severino (1.483 OPS).. Fun! Um, the pitching… Well, Gerson Calzadilla threw well. And Jose Chavez did okay.
  18. - RHP Abner Uribe promoted to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi - OF/INF Noah Campbell assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville - INF Josh VanMeter sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers
  19. Thanks. Trying to be realistic. To me, Arnold somehow made a tolerable stew out of three tomatoes, one potato, celery and croutons. Attanasio needs to do right by him and open the checkbook - $5m, $10m, $20m - anything. Give Arnold a chance to boost this roster.
  20. I’m grateful to Attanasio for hiring Stearns, Counsell and Arnold, then actually going for it in 2018 and 2019. But I think it’s also necessary to call him out for the present underperforming state of the team. Matt Arnold made some real off-season magic in adding Contreras, Anderson, Owen Miller, Miley, Payamps, Wilson, Peguero, Rea, etc. with quite meager means. With even $5 million of additional funds, I can’t help but imagine that Arnold would have done additional magic to improve the team and put us well ahead by this point in our terrible division.
  21. For the week, Wisconsin (4-1) was the sole series winner, though Nashville (3-3) and Biloxi (3-3) each managed to split their contests. Carolina was a miserable 1-6 as their first half title hopes fade. Transactions: LHP Wade Miley sent on rehab assignment to AA Biloxi Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One (Continuation) Final: Nashville 6, Jacksonville 4 (in 8 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Jacksonville 8, Nashville 4 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Settle For Sunday Split in Jacksonville After rain washed out Friday’s contest and limited Saturday to just 3.5 innings played, the Sounds and Jumbo Shrimp managed to play 11.5 innings Sunday, with plenty of rehab stints and fireworks. The continuation game picked up in the bottom of the 4th inning tied at 1-1, with 2B Eddy Alvarez (3-for-4, 2 HRs, double, 3 RBIs) homering in the 6th inning (a solo shot to tie the game 3-3) and again in the 8th inning (a 2-run shot to extend the Sounds’ lead to 6-3). The second game was played as a 7-inning affair but it was essentially over after eight pitches (single, double, homer) from rehabbing LHP Eric Lauer, who needed 34 pitches to survive a 3-run first inning. The second inning didn’t go any better as Jacksonville needed just seven pitches to load the bases (three singles), followed by a Little League grand slam. However, two homers by right fielder Tyler Naquin (2-for-3, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs) and another by C Payton Henry (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs) showed the potency of the Sounds’ offense in their 8-4 defeat. Sounds’ Extras: RHP Matt Bush’s second rehab appearance was a success (13 pitches, 3 ground outs), while RHP JB Bukauskus’ second rehab stint was an up-and-down affair: conceded 2-run homer, but retired five of next six batters including three in a row via strikeout. RHP Thyago Vieira (2 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) came through once again for the Sounds in the first game, working around a lead-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning to get the game to extra innings, then only allowing the Manfred Man to score in the following frame to earn the win. While most of the organization’s concern rightfully centers on Eric Lauer’s struggles, center fielder Monte Harrison also picked a bad time to turn that 2nd inning single into a grand slam by allowing the ball to slip under his glove and roll to the wall. With the recent additions of OFs Michael Reed and Roman Quinn, along with the expected return of rehabbing OF Sal Frelick, roster spots may suddenly be at a premium. Next week’s outlook: The Sounds (31-31) return home to take on Braves’ affiliate Gwinnett (29-34). Expect RHP Pedro Fernandez (3.86 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 44 1/3 IP) to start the series opener on Tuesday. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Mike Guerrero Notches 1,400th Career Win, Shuckers Win Finale over M-Braves Outside of a tricky 3rd inning, LHP Wade Miley (5 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 1 WP) cruised through what he hopes will be the only rehab start that he requires, needing just 65 pitches to pitch five shutout innings. After retiring the first six batters of the game, consecutive singles to start the 3rd inning put Miley in a jam, though he deftly escaped with a force out at third base, fly out and strike out. The victory was Manager Mike Guerrero’s 1,400th in the minor leagues, making him only the 7th active manager to achieve this feat. Have a look at several Shuckers’ highlights at their Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: After stranding four runners in the first three innings, the Shuckers offense didn’t miss in a three-run 4th inning, with a leadoff double by DH/OF Tristen Lutz (2-for-5, double, RBI), then singles by each of SS Freddy Zamora, 2B Ethan Murray (1-for-5, RBI, 2 SBs) and center fielder Jackson Chourio (3-for-5, 2 RBIs, SB). Unfortunately, the game tightened to 4-3 upon RHP Bo Bowman’s (1 IP, 3 R (2 ER)) entry in the 6th inning and Biloxi needed solid relief and an insurance run to hold on for victory. Relief came in the form of RHPs Tobias Myers, Cam Robinson and Abner Uribe covering three innings, with Uribe registering 103mph on the radar gun although he also allowed a homer. Biloxi ran the Braves ragged for much of the game, stealing six straight bases before getting caught twice in the top of the 8th inning. Their seventh stolen base was perhaps the most crucial: 3B Tyler Black singled to lead off the 9th inning, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 5-3 before Uribe earned the save. Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (29-28) stays on the road to take on Rays’ affiliate Montgomery (28-29). Although no starting pitcher is listed for Tuesday’s game, RHP Christian Mejias (5.36 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 50 1/3 IP) is most likely to get the start. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Via the Rattlers’ website, rainout details: Rattlers Rained Out of Series Finale at West Michigan If you suspected that West Michigan had simply had enough of being beaten by the Timber Rattlers, so called the game due to a few drops, you’d probably be mistaken: three of the six scheduled games in the Midwest League were rained out on Sunday. This game will not be made up. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (22-33) stays in Michigan to play Dodgers’ super-affiliate Great Lakes (39-17). I assume 21-year old RHP Edwin Jimenez (2.09 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 47 1/3 IP) will start Tuesday’s noon contest after missing out due to today’s rainout. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 6, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Nicasia Homers as Mudcats Lose Sixth Straight Losers of five straight games entering Sunday’s contest, the Mudcats needed an early spark but instead found themselves behind 4-0 before even swinging their bats. RHP Will Rudy (4 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) uncharacteristically struggled, walking two of the first three batters and then allowing three consecutive hits. At least Rudy was able to recollect himself and pitch three scoreless innings after that brutal first inning, but unfortunately the hole was already too deep for struggling Mudcats, who fell to four games behind Down East in the standings. Mudcats’ Extras: The Mudcats were outhit 10-to-4 and struck out 16 times in the game, but they did in fact make a game of it with one big swing from right fielder Kay-Lan Nicasia (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBIs) in the bottom of the 6th inning: a 3-run blast to cut the deficit to 5-3. A double from C Jose Sibrian with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning brought the potential tying run to the plate, but 2B Jheremy Vargas and SS Jadher Areinamo weren’t able to come through. In the relief corps, each of RHPs Nick Merkel and Yerlin Rodriguez conceded one earned run over their combined four innings of work. RHP Shane Smith’s hitless, scoreless, 3-strikeout inning looks better by comparison, though he also hit two out of five batters. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (30-25) heads out to take on Braves’ affiliate Augusta (27-30), hoping any number of their wounded position players (e.g. Daniel Guilarte, Luis Lara, Tayden Hall, Luis Castillo) make a return. RHP Logan Henderson may get the call to start the first game of the series. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck in the three Rookie affiliate games tomorrow. 22. Wade Miley pitched five shutout innings and Jackson Chourio collected three hits. Eddy Alvarez and Tyler Naquin combined on four homers, though Nashville split its doubleheader. Carolina’s terrible week continued, while Wisconsin was rained out. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic For the week, Wisconsin (4-1) was the sole series winner, though Nashville (3-3) and Biloxi (3-3) each managed to split their contests.
