  1. AAA Nashville’s LHP Robert Gasser (5.17 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 in 31 1/3 IP) gets the start in Durham tonight, as they aim to even the series 2-2.
  2. AA Biloxi trails 3-0 in its series in Chattanooga and has RHP Tobias Myers (3.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 12.6 K/9 in 36 1/3 IP) starting tonight. RF Noah Campbell and his .443 OBP return to the lineup after a day off.
  3. High-A Wisconsin hosts Quad Cities and turns to RHP Joseph Hernandez (3.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 31 2/3 IP) to try to end its 4-game losing streak. 2B Robert Moore has 4 doubles and 5 RBIs in his last 3 games.
  4. The 2-win, 3-loss night puts our squads at a combined 4-9 this week, collectively three games below .500 on the season. The Mudcats were actually no-hit in the 7-inning opening game of their doubleheader before exacting revenge in their nightcap. Thursday’s Game Balls go to Nate Peterson, Brian Navaretto, Justin Jarvis, Bennett Sousa and Robert Moore, with honorable mentions to Eric Brown Jr. and Skye Bolt. Three Quick Strikes: LHP Bennett Sousa (2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) and Skye Bolt (2-for-3, walk, RBI) combined for a great escape, with Sousa entering in relief of a struggling LHP Clayton Andrews to face a bases loaded and nobody out situation while clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning. A single was limited to one run via a Bolt assist to nab a runner at home, before Sousa retired the next five batters, four via strikeout. Returning from a nearly 3-week absence, RHP Robert Stock (1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) got the brief start. LHP Ethan Small (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) walked the first two batters he faced (allowing one inherited runner to score) before settling in to give the team some sorely-needed innings. 2B Patrick Dorrian (2-for-3, 2 doubles, walk, RBI) also had a nice game, while right fielder Monte Harrison exited early via ejection after striking out in his two at-bats. Friday’s outlook: LHP Robert Gasser (5.17 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 11.2 K/9 in 31 1/3 IP) is scheduled to start the fourth game of the series, trying to get back on track after two difficult starts. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga 2, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Pitching Strikes Out 13 in 2-0 Loss to Lookouts Another day, another 2-0 shutout loss for our beloved Shuckers. The team went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven. Once again, Biloxi’s hurlers deserved better, as the team fell to a fifth straight defeat. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Justin Jarvis (6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 9 Ks) took his second loss of the year, but was solid once again in throwing 95 pitches over six innings. Biloxi managed just three hits in the game, but at least 1B Zavier Warren and center fielder Jackson Chourio each doubled to show a glimpse of potency. Each went 1-for-4 with a strikeout, as the team K’d 11 times. LHP Nick Bennett (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) was solid in relief, retiring all six batters he faced. C Jeferson Quero (1-for-4) also threw out Chattanooga’s only attempted basestealer, while the Lookouts’ catcher matched the feat by throwing out 3B Tyler Black (0-for-2, walk, HBP). Friday’s outlook: RHP Tobias Myers (3.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 12.6 K/9 in 36 1/3 IP) gets the next crack at ending Biloxi’s losing skid, but the offense needs to score! Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Quad Cities 7, Wisconsin 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Bandits Get Late, Two-Out Runs to Beat Wisconsin For the second game in a row, the Timber Rattlers could not keep up with Quad Cities, who came through with clutch hits to score three runs in the final three innings. SS Eric Brown Jr. (2-for-4, 2 doubles, walk, SB) and 2B Robert Moore (2-for-5, double, 3 RBIs) had 2-out hits in the 9th inning to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of C Matt Wood (2-for-5, triple), but he flied out to end it. Check out the video highlights as compiled by the Wisconsin’s excellent media team, including this smooth defensive play from Brown and Moore: Three Quick Strikes: RHP Alexander Cornielle (5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 3 Ks) didn’t allow a hit in the first three innings as Wisconsin built a 2-0 lead, but then gave up four consecutive hits in the top of the fourth inning, the last a 2-run homer to fall behind 4-2. Moore is steadily heating up, doubling in two runs to tie the game in the 5th inning, which was part of a 3-RBI night for him. 3B Eduardo Garcia (1-for-3, HR, walk, RBI, SB) also continued his topsy-turvy season, crushing his 3rd homer of the year and stealing a base. Unfortunately, outfielders Joe Gray Jr. and Je’Von Ward weren’t able to match their contributions, going a combined 0-for-8 with five strikeouts. RHP Max Lazar (2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) took the loss despite quality work, while RHP Bo Bowman conceded two runs in the 9th inning to make the comeback much more difficult. Friday’s outlook: RHP Joseph Hernandez (3.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 31 2/3 IP) is the expected starter, with the team needing a win to claw back to 1-3 in their series. After being no-hit by Kannapolis’ 23-year old Connor McCullough (who faced just one batter over the minimum) in the opening game, LHP Nate Peterson (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) steadied the ship to earn the win in the nightcap. Three Quick Strikes: 3B Jadher Areinamo and 2B Jheremy Vargas each collected two singles in the late game, but getting runs across was a team effort: DH/1B Jesus Parra RBI single, left fielder Jace Avina RBI hit-by-pitch, 1B Jesus Chirinos sac fly, wild pitches to score Areinamo and Vargas. With the tying runs on base against RHP Jeison Pena in the top of the 7th inning, RHP Shane Smith was called into action to get the final out, striking out dangerous Jacob Burke, thus earning Smith his third save of 2023. It was death by a thousand cuts for RHP Aidan Maldonado (2 1/3 IP, 7 R (6 ER), 11 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 3 WPs), against whom every ball seemed to find its way through for a hit in the first game. His season ERA balloons to 6.20, but he only conceded one extra base hit and one walk against 20 hitters. Friday’s outlook: Exciting 21-year old RHP Jacob Misiorowski (2.45 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 15.3 K/9 in 14 2/3 IP) aims to build on a terrific last start, as Carolina looks for a 4-1 series lead. 6. Wood flies out and Wisconsin has a 4-game skid. Biloxi also dropped its game, its 5th in a row. But Carolina earned a split today, leading series 3-1. And Nashville also grabbed a win, now trailing series 2-1.
  7. Hall and Doston grounded out, but Eric Brown Jr. and Robert Moore collected hits. It’s 7-5, 1-on, 2 outs with Matt Wood up.
  8. LHP Bennett Sousa calmed the waters for Nashville, coming in to limit damage on a bases loaded, nobody out situation in the 7th inning (1 run scored, 3-3 game), then striking out the side in the 8th inning to earn the win.
  9. Wisconsin gives up 1 in the 7th and 2 in the 9th, now trails 7-4 and is down to their final 3 outs. Alex Hall, Terence Doston and Eric Brown Jr. are up.
  10. Nate Peterson K’d 6 in 5 innings of work for Carolina in their nightcap, conceding 1 run, while the offense manufactured some early runs. Mudcats ultimately win this one, 5-3, with RHP Shane Smith coming in to bail out RHP Jeison Peña.
  11. Four consecutive hits off Cornielle to open the 4th inning, the last a homer, have completely undone his earlier work. Rattlers trail 4-2.
  12. Nashville ties up Durham 2-2 in the top of the 7th inning, as Skye Bolt, Patrick Dorrian and Brian Navaretto open the inning with 3 straight hits.
  13. 3B Eduardo Garcia with a no doubter solo shot to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead through 3 innings, with Alexander Cornielle cruising thus far.
  14. Justin Jarvis has only conceded 1 run on 2 hits through 4 innings, but Biloxi’s only managed 1 hit thus far themselves. Shuckers trail 1-0.
  15. Here’s how the Mudcats line up for the 2nd game is todays doubleheader, with LHP Nate Peterson (3.04 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 23.2 IP) getting his 3rd start (7th appearance). We’ve no word on why steady SS Daniel Guilarte has been absent today.
  16. The AAA Sounds need a victory in Durham to avoid a 3-0 series. RHP Robert Stock (9.39 ERA in 15.1 IP) gets his first action in nearly 3 weeks. SS Andruw Monasterio has a 19-game on-base streak.
  17. High-A Wisconsin trails Quad Cities 2-0 in this week’s home series. RHP Alexander Cornielle (6.33 ERA in 21.1 IP) starts tonight. SS Eric Brown Jr. comes in with a 15-game on-base streak.
  18. AA Biloxi has dropped 4 straight games, including 2 in Chattanooga. RHP Justin Jarvis 2.18 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 10.4 K/9 in 33 IP) tries to right the ship tonight. 3B Tyler Black is 6th in the league in OPS, 2nd in OBP and 1st in stolen bases.
  19. Low-A Carolina leads their series 2-0 in Kannapolis and plays a doubleheader today. RHP Aidan Maldonado (4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 18 IP) makes his 4th start (7th appearance) in the opening game. After an atrocious start to 2023, LF Jace Avina is finally starting to heat up with a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-20, HR, 2 doubles, 3 walks).
  20. RHP Robert Stock activated by AAA Nashville from Development List C Brent Diaz transferred to Development List by AAA Nashville
  21. Will Rudy pitched five shutout innings and Jesus Chirinos drove in four runs in Carolina’s victory. Biloxi stranded 13 runners in a frustrating loss, Wisconsin couldn’t keep up with Quad Cities and Nashville was one-hit in defeat. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic In a repeat of Tuesday’s results, the Carolina Mudcats were the sole affiliate to win on Wednesday night, dropping our minor league squads to a 2-6 record on the week thus far. Wednesday’s Game Balls go to Will Rudy, Jesus Chirinos, Adam Seminaris, Noah Campbell and Robert Moore. Transactions: RHP Lucas Erceg traded to the Oakland A’s (for cash) from AAA Nashville. This is one more twist in Erceg's epic journey to (hopefully, eventually) a long career in the Major Leagues OF Arbert Cipion assigned to High-A Wisconsin (last played September 9, 2022, also for Wisconsin) RHP Jake Cousins recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 4, Nashville 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Silenced in Durham The Sounds had the sole late game amongst Brewers’ affiliates on Wednesday, but their bats had already slept off by game time, generating just one hit and striking out 14 times in the shutout defeat. Three Quick Strikes: RHP Pedro Fernandez (3 1/3 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 5 Ks) was relatively effective through the first two innings, but his night ended early at 66 pitches, after a solo homer in the 3rd inning and the first two batters reaching in the 4th inning (single, walk; both scored). The defense let him down with two errors and a passed ball. RHPs Tyson Miller and Thyago Vieira combined on 4 2/3 scoreless innings (1 hit, 2 BB, 6 Ks) to keep the Sounds in the ballgame throughout. 29-year old Vieira continues to throw 99mph consistently and has yet to allow an earned run in 2023 in 7 2/3 innings pitched. The Bulls tried to be generous, committing three errors of their own, walking six Sounds (including 1B Jon Singleton three times) and hitting one batter, but Nashville’s lumber couldn’t come through, stranding nine runners. Newly-added right fielder Michael Reed went 0-for-3 with a walk. Thursday’s outlook: I’m guessing Nashville will opt for a bullpen game (e.g. LHP Alex Claudio to open?), unless RHP Caleb Boushley is recalled early from the Development List. The Sounds needs a victory to get back to 2-1 in the series. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Chattanooga 2, Biloxi 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Seminaris Ties Career-High with Seven Innings, Shuckers Fall to Lookouts, 2-0 Losing a fourth straight game doesn’t get more frustrating than this, as the Shuckers went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 13 men on base (vs. just four men left on base for the Lookouts): 1st inning: 2 of first 3 batters reached base, but didn’t score 3rd inning: 4 of first 5 batters reached base, but didn’t… 4th inning: 3 of first 4 batters reached base, but… 5th inning: 3 of first 4 batters reached base, … 6th inning: 2 of first 4 batters reached base… 9th inning: first 2 batters reached… Three Quick Strikes: LHP Adam Seminaris (7 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) collected his fourth loss of 2023, but the organization will be happy that he put together a second consecutive decent start after a rough commencement to the season. After right fielder Noah Campbell (1-for-1, 4 walks; .900 season OPS) singled to start the game, Chattanooga pitchers wanted nothing more to do with him, walking him the next four times up. Campbell also gunned down a runner at home to end the 7th inning. Is it time to test out 23-year old switch hitting Campbell in AAA ball? Left fielder Tristen Lutz returned from a month-long injury absence, going 1-for-5. However, both he and center fielder Jackson Chourio (1-for-5) stranded seven men on base during their at-bats. Thursday’s outlook: RHP Justin Jarvis (2.18 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 10.4 K/9 in 33 IP) gets the start, as the Shuckers need a victory to claw back to 2-1 in the series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Quad Cities 9, Wisconsin 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Drop Decision to Quad Cities The River Bandits were a bit relentless in this game, outhitting Wisconsin thirteen to eight and going 4-for-21 with runners in scoring position, stranding a whopping 16 baserunners. They also stole six bases and weren’t caught even once (troubling for C Darrien Miller, whose defensive development is a major focus). The Timber Rattlers’ loss was their third in a row. Check out the video highlights as compiled by the Wisconsin’s excellent media team. We’ve also got another Chris Mehring and Kyle Lobner post-game podcast for your listening pleasure, including comments on 1B Ernesto Martinez (exited early with knee tenderness), Matt Wood and others from Manager Joe Ayrault. Three Quick Strikes: Starting RHP Tyler Woessner (4 1/3 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 Ks) dealt with more traffic than usual but limited the damage, ultimately exiting early in the 5th inning after reaching 87 pitches. LHP Karlos Morales managed to strand two inherited runners in that 5th inning, but then conceded three runs of his own in the pivotal 6th inning, as the 7th-year minor leaguer was tagged with the loss. In all, the bullpen of Morales, Ryan Brady, Michele Vassalotti and Brandon Jordan conceded eight runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 IP. 2B Robert Moore (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) is not yet out of his hitting slump (.182 season AVG), but he was clutch in the 7th inning, doubling in a run and scoring on a ground out to cut the deficit to 6-5. Thursday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (6.33 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 21 1/3 IP) will try to turn the tide for Wisconsin, who trail their home series 2-0 against Quad Cities. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Kannapolis 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: First Place Mudcats Blank Ballers 7-0 Let’s be grateful for the Mudcats, who were the sole winning affiliate for the second day in a row, dominating the Cannon Ballers from start to finish in this game, including outhitting them 10 to 4 and not committing any errors (vs. two errors for Kannapolis). RHP Will Rudy (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks) managed to breeze through his five innings on just 62 pitches, as I’m sure excitement among Brewers’ brass grows regarding their 2022 5th round draft pick. He did not concede any extra base hits. Have a look at many beautiful strikeouts here and check out the Mudcats’ Twitter feed for the offensive highlights: Three Quick Strikes: Eight players in the lineup reached base two times, with 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) having his best game of 2023 as he rediscovers his stroke. It was also good to see left fielder Hedbert Perez (2-for-5, double) record a double and a single with no strikeouts. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K) closed out the 9th inning in his first game since September 2, 2022, while Chase Costello (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) was solid over three scoreless innings. 3B Luke Adams (1-for-3, double, walk, 2 RBIs) knows how to get on base (.397 season OPS, despite a .184 AVG that’s supressed by a .213 BABIP) and get in scoring position from there, stealing his 11th base in this game. SS Daniel Guilarte (1-for-4, walk, SB) also stole his 16th base while extending his on-base streak to 35 games (including five games last year). Thursday’s outlook: RHP Aidan Maldonado (4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 18 IP) and LHP Nate Peterson (3.04 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 23 2/3 IP) are scheduled start two ends of a doubleheader (with Carolina "hosting" one game on the road to make up for a prior rain-out), as the Mudcats seek a 4-0 series lead.
