  1. Transactions: 3B Brock Wilken (1st round draft pick) promoted to High-A Wisconsin from ACL Brewers RHP Ryan Birchard (5th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers and activated LHP Tate Kuehner (7th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers and activated LHP Mark Manfredi (9th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers and activated RHP Morris Austin (10th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers RHP Brett Wichrowski (13th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers and activated RHP Ryne Moore assigned to ACL Brewers – essentially continuing rehab work that began in July 2023; Moore was injured while playing for High-A Wisconsin in June 2022 INF Abraham Toro optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers RHP Trevor Megill optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers Signed LHP Jesus Broca to a minor league contract – 19-year-old native of Mexico currently on the Reserve List, having thrown 33 1/3 innings in the Mexico Winter League and 8 1/3 innings in the Mexican League this summer Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 4, Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Come Up Short Against Bulls It can’t be easy when you plan to pitch for Durham against Nashville, get traded to the other dugout and thus pitch for Nashville against Durham, but that’s exactly what Sounds’ starting pitcher RHP Evan McKendry had to do this week. The result? – he conceded four runs and seven hits (including two homers) over five innings and was tagged with the loss. But at least his defense helped him out of a key jam early: You’ll see more defensive and offensive highlights at Nashville’s Twitter feed. Sounds’ Extras: Together, the teams produced for just six runs despite their twenty hits, going a combined 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position while stranding 23 men on base. But the real difference in the game was the four extra base hits for Durham versus none for Nashville. Bullpen bright spots: each of LHP Alex Claudio, MLB rehabbing LHP Bennett Sousa and RHPs Pedro Fernandez and Thyago Vieira threw a scoreless inning to give the offense a chance, with Fernandez recording two strikeouts while not allowing a baserunner. Offensive bright spots: Center fielder Skye Bolt had 3 singles and a walk; 1B Keston Hiura had 2 singles, an HBP and an RBI; 3B Cam Devanney had 2 singles, a walk and an RBI. Not clutch: from the 5th inning onward, the Sounds trailed 4-2 and managed to get the potential game-tying run on base every inning, but failed to score. Friday’s outlook: Trailing 2-1 in the series, 24-year old LHP Robert Gasser (4.15 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 95 1/3 IP) faces off against RHP Taj Bradley, who’s thrown 74 2/3 innings in the majors for the Rays this year at just 22 years old. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Misiorowski Strikes Out Eight, Shuckers Beat Blue Wahoos, 7-4 21-year old starting RHP Jacob Misiorowski (5 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 Ks, 2 WP) dug deep in his third-ever start in AA ball, overcoming a difficult first two innings to retire nine Blue Wahoos in a row at one point, deservedly earning his first win at this level. It likely helped the confidence level to have his offense pick him up with a five-run 3rd inning to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 advantage. That 3rd inning was like a spark that quickly grows into a blaze: 2B Felix Valerio single, right fielder Lamar Sparks RBI double, center fielder Jackson Chourio RBI single, left fielder Isaac Collins 2-run homer, DH Wes Clarke solo homer. Clarke’s homer was his fifth in his last five games, giving him 17 dingers on the season. Shuckers’ Extras: 19-year old Chourio collected three singles in the game as he stokes the promotion fire. He now leads the Southern League with 108 hits, which is 15 more than the player in second place. Sparks (2-for-5, double, SB) manned the leadoff spot as Tyler Black had the day off. After the game tightened up to 5-4 with two runs off LHP Nick Bennett in the 6th inning, Sparks played a pivotal role in stemming the momentum: one-out single in the 7th inning, stole second base, scored on an errant throw by the catcher for a 6-4 advantage. High leverage RHPs Ryan Middendorf and Cam Robinson retired 9 of 10 batters they faced over three scoreless innings to close out the win for a 2-1 series lead, striking out six Pensacola batters. Collins reached base two times (HR, walk) in five plate appearances, which actually lowered his season OBP to .441, which is second in the Southern League. We’re lucky to have the 26-year old Collins under contract for 2024 as well. 3B Ethan Murray added two doubles and some stellar defense. Friday’s outlook: RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (2.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 12.0 K/9 in 85 1/3 IP), recently named Southern League Pitcher of the Month for July, is the scheduled starter as Biloxi seeks a 3-1 series lead. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend 13, Wisconsin 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Six-Run First Sinks Wisconsin in South Bend 21-year old starting RHP Alexander Cornielle’s run of four decent outings came to an abrupt halt in South Bend, as he retired just one of nine batters faced and exited after 35 pitches (just 15 strikes). In better news, 2023 first round draft pick 3B Brock Wilken made his debut in full season affiliate baseball: strikeout, ground out, strikeout, walk with a run scored. Somehow, no balls were hit to him in the field, although he did get to make the tag out on a rundown in the 3rd inning. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Outhit 14-4 and outwalked 12-3, there weren’t many positives to draw from the game, but at least 1B Ernesto Martinez hit the ball hard: first triple of 2023, 3 RBIs in the game, robbed of a double on a great catch early in the contest. LHP Karlos Morales only allowed one of Cornielle’s three baserunners to score, putting in the best pitching line (2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks, 1 WP) on a difficult day for the team. Neither of RHP Michele Vassalotti or Nick Merkel were able to deliver much better results than position player Alex Hall on the mound – combined, they yielded eight earned runs over five innings pitched. Friday’s outlook: RHP Tyler Woessner (3.69 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 7.9 K/9 in 92 2/3 IP) gets another chance to make his case for promotion to AA ball, as he’ll try to lead Wisconsin to a win to even the series 2-2. Final: Fayetteville 3, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Concedes Late and Drops Game 3 in 3-2 Loss Where are closers Yerlin Rodriguez (4-out save on Wednesday night), Shane Smith (in High-A ball), Jesus Rivero (converted to a starter), Tanner Shears (in High-A ball) and Nick Merkel (in High-A ball) when you need them? The young Mudcats nearly polished off a 2-1 victory for starting RHP Patricio Aquino (5 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks, 1 balk), with Low-A debutant LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks) throwing three scoreless innings of relief and RHP Jeferson Figueroa (pop out) and C Blayberg Diaz (threw out attempted basestealer) grabbing two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning before Carolina was done in by three consecutive singles. Mudcats’ Extras: Carolina only managed to produce five hits in the game (two from 2B Jadher Areinamo), then didn’t help their cause by being thrown out stealing three times (including twice for Areinamo). 3B Luke Adams had a quiet game (0-for-4, with an error in the field), but we were relieved to see him back in the lineup after exiting Wednesday’s game early. 20-year old left fielder Jace Avina has a .777 OPS in 211 plate appearances since flipping a switch on May 11, not including this 1-for-4 game with his 11th homer of 2023. Friday’s outlook: No starter is listed yet, but RHP Yujanyer Herrera (last pitched 10 days ago) is most likely to get the call. Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 7, ACL Athletics 5 Box Score / Game Log Borrowing notes from @Joseph Zarr: The ACL squad scored seven unanswered runs over the first four innings to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 7-2 lead which held up the rest of the way, improving their season record to 23-20. Starting 19-year old LHP Osbriel Mogollon did the heavy lifting going 5 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 ER, 9 K. Third round draft pick Eric Bitonti was moved to SS (DH last night) and rewarded with a 2-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBIs, 1 HR, 2 K performance. Nice to see that long ball action! Sixth round draft pick Cooper Pratt was shifted to the DH and lead-off slot and also rewarded with a 1-for-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K, 1 SB evening. Second round draft pick Mike Boeve (is he next up for promotion after Wilken?) manned second base again, delivering a double, single, walk and an RBI. INF Juan Baez was moved to 3B where he went 1-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 SB batting clean-up. Baez was also charged with his 16th error (fielding) of the season on the very first play of the game. C Edgardo Ordonez also contributed with a double, walk, sacrifice fly, 2 RBIs and a stolen base. 20-year old RHP Gerson Calzadilla tossed another scoreless inning in late relief and picks up his 4th Save - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 2 K. His season ERA is now down to 0.83 with a 0.89 WHIP in 32 2/3 IP. Quite the impressive work from this young man. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers-1 Squad 4, DSL Dodgers Bautista 1 Box Score / Game Log The Uno young men chased the Dodgers’ starter by producing seven hits in the first 2 1/3 innings to grab a 4-0 lead which was sufficient behind excellent pitching and defense (no errors). On the mound, starting 18-year old LHP Anthony Flores (4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K) was solid once again, while the bullpen of RHPs Jesael Cabrera , Wilfredo Cordero and Roman Perez combined to throw five scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts. Offensive highlights: Right fielder Brian Sanchez: double, single, RBI Center fielder Yophery Rodriguez: double, walk, RBI 3B Gery Holguin: two singles, RBI Left fielder Idalberto Santiesteban: two singles. The impressive victory over the league-leading 32-8 Dodgers improves their season record to 23-17 and the teams will square off once again on Friday. Continuation Game (resumed from top of 3rd inning) Final: DSL Braves 8, DSL Brewers-2 Squad 3 Box Score / Game Log This game began on July 27 and the teams picked up play with the score tied 1-1 in the top of the 3rd inning, with the Dos squad not requiring any lineup change. Unfortunately, starting 17-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K, 1 WP, 1 balk; season ERA 2.48) wasn’t able to deliver his usual excellent performance, conceding two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning as the team fell behind 3-1. From there, it was a game of missed opportunities, as the offense stranded 14 baserunners and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Eight hits, eight walks and five stolen bases (with nobody caught) weren’t enough to keep up with the Braves, who actually went 1-for-14 with RISP but only left eight men on base. Usual contributor 2B Filippo Di Turi reached base four times (double, single, 2 walks; season OPS .842) and 1B/C Roman La Torre made it thrice (single, 2 walks). The loss drops the DSL Brewers-2 squad’s record to 16-24 on the year. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Enjoy Friday’s 7-game slate! 3. - INF Abraham Toro optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers - RHP Trevor Megill optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers
  4. - RHP Ryan Birchard (5th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - LHP Tate Kuehner (7th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - LHP Mark Manfredi (9th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Morris Austin (10th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Brett Wichrowski (13th round pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - RHP Ryne Moore assigned to ACL Brewers (essentially extended rehab)
  5. We seem to be winding his work down: 45 pitches on July 21, 72 pitches on July 27, 8 days before next start on August 4. My guess: he gets a cup of coffee (2 starts) in AAA in the final two weeks of September.
  6. For reliever promotions, I'm still scarred from the Luke Barker days... But yeah, I was thinking that Yerlin Rodriguez and Chase Costello could/should merit looks in High-A, with any of 26-year old Sam Gardner, 25-year old Justin King (struggling a bit since injury return, but still K'ing guys and we can blame the recent .474 BABIP), 25-year old Nick Merkel, 24-year old Tanner Shears, 23-year old Karlos Moralas or 23-year old Shane Smith being promoted to AA Biloxi.
  7. We're all twiddling our thumbs, waiting on: Black, Chourio and Quero to AAA Woessner, Martinez, Miller and an outfielder to AA Wilken, Adams (don't be hurt, don't be hurt, don't be hurt), Lara, Sibrian and Henderson to High-A Boeve, O'Rae and Baez to Low-A Wilken didn't play yesterday, so maybe that's a sign that his promotion will be announced today. Woessner is scheduled to pitch for the Rattlers on Friday, but we've got to be tired of thrusting Meeker, Shook, Bennett and now Lazar into short rest starts for Biloxi.
  8. - RHP Bradley Blalock assigned to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina - C Jesus Garcia assigned to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers
  9. - SS Eric Bitonti (3rd round draft pick) assigned to ACL Brewers - SS Cooper Pratt (6th round draft pick) assigned to ACL Brewers
  10. Re-thinking this 18 hours later, I'm guessing that we fully expect to protect McKendry. He's younger than Janson Junk and has better numbers than him. Knowing how much we value catching depth, I'm not sure we'd have made that trade unless we think highly of McKendry. This feels somewhat similar to the Mark Mathias and Owen Miller acquisitions in the past. Is McKendry likely to be selected by another organization? Perhaps not, as his K numbers don't jump off the charts and he's sporting a 4.00 ERA. However, we're really lacking young AAA starting pitching at the moment, so we may not risk the 10% chance of him being selected.
  11. With Miley starting for the Brewers tomorrow (and Chafin arriving via trade), along with Woodruff and Anderson appearing in decent form for AAA Nashville today, it looks like we'll probably add 4 players to the 26-man MLB roster shortly: Two tomorrow (Miley, Chafin) - likely for Megill, along with Toro or Perkins Two in a few days (Anderson, Woodruff) - likely for Toro or Perkins, along with maybe Mejia
  12. Maybe this will free up space for a Quero move to AAA. Let’s see
  13. - LHP Eric Lauer assigned to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers - RHP Brandon Woodruff’s rehab transferred to AAA Nashville from High-A Wisconsin - 3B/RF Brian Anderson sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville - LHP Bennett Sousa’s rehab transferred to AAA Nashville from ACL Brewers - LHP Adam Seminaris sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers
  14. Thank you @RedStickBrew for the kind words and support! It’s a real pleasure to contribute to the community that’s brought together here. It’s a particularly exciting period now with likely promotions across the system.
  15. At 6’2”, 210 lbs, we’re probably thinking/hoping that Boeve will be able to tap into some power - e.g. 15 homers a year. On Wilken, maybe there’s no need to rush him to High-A Wisconsin.
  16. Transactions: RHP Justin Jarvis (who had been at AAA Nashville) traded to New York Mets for OF/1B Mark Canha RHP Jake Cousins (who had been at AAA Nashville) claimed off waivers by Houston Game Action: Arizona Complex League Action Final: ACL Brewers 7, ACL Rangers 6 Box Score / Game Log Our hitters in Arizona came through, taking the lead for the fourth and final time in an exciting walk-off victory which improves the team’s record to 21-19. 2023 first round draft pick 3B Brock Wilken (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs) knocked in the winning run with an RBI single after the team had loaded the bases with nobody out. In equally exciting news, each of Wilken and 2023 second round draft pick DH/INF Mike Boeve (2-for-3, HR, walk, HBP, RBI) hit their first home runs in the Brewers’ system – a solo shot for Boeve to take a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning, then 2-run blast for Wilken in the 5th inning to tie the game 5-5. The top five spots in the lineup came through early and often, with 2B Dylan O’Rae, Boeve, Wilken, SS Juan Baez and 1B Yeison Perez combining on two home runs, a triple, four singles, six RBIs and six runs scored. Despite giving up six runs, the mound work was actually encouraging, save for 17-year old starting RHP Manuel Rodriguez (4 2/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 10 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) understandably struggling when pushed to work what ultimately became a four-run 5th inning for the Rangers. Never fear, as 19-year old LHP Anfernny Reyes (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks, 1 WP) helped the team escape that 5th inning by stranding two inherited runners via a strikeout, then dominating for three more frames during which the Brewers re-took the lead at 6-5 on an RBI groundout off the bat of C Alejandro Rodriguez (debut game for the undrafted free agent – 1-for-4, RBI). For the Rangers, 2023 fourth overall draft pick OF Wyatt Langford was a one-man wrecking crew, singling in two runs in that 5th inning and scoring shortly thereafter, then hitting a solo homer off RHP Gerson Calzadilla (1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K; season ERA 0.85) to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the 9th inning. Dominican Summer League Action Final: DSL Brewers-2 Squad 2, DSL Brewers-1 Squad 0 (in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The Brewers obviously have strong confidence in second-year, 18-year old RHP Bryan Rivera, giving him his 9th start of the season. On this day, Rivera delivered his best start (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks; season ERA 4.28), getting the better of 17-year RHP Eric Prado to earn his first official win of 2023. For his part, Prado was respectable in defeat: 4 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks, 1 WP as his season ERA lifted to 1.50. At the plate, DSL Brewers-2 grabbed the game's only runs in the top of the 3rd inning, with C Freider Rojas (1-for-2, SB) singling, stealing second base and scoring on a Filippo Di Turi (1-for-3, RBI; season OPS .800) ground out, then DH/UT Pedro Ibarguen (2-for-3, RBI; season OPS .776) following with an RBI single. Let's hear it for relief pitchers 19-year old RHP Yeferson Tales and 18-year old Lenin Mendez, who combined on five scoreless innings with 5 Ks with no walks. And the catchers both came through defensively, throwing out 4 of 5 attempted basestealers - two each for Rojas and C Yannic Walthier. Finally, center fielder Yophery Rodriguez went 0-for-3 with a K (season OPS .924), but did throw out a runner on at second base. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 18. After experiencing the 2014, 2020 and 2022 trade deadlines, I’m happy to see us acquire two guys who appear to qualify as “bat-first” players. Fangraphs rates Canha’s defense as a negative, so maybe we won’t actually be seeing him much in the outfield. In that case, I assume that Toro will get the boot back down to AAA, since CC obviously isn’t a fan of Toro’s 3B/2B defense. We’ll see.

  20. For the week, the Mudcats and Shuckers went undefeated (12-0). The Timber Rattlers also won their series 4-2, while the Sounds split six games. Transactions: RHP Peter Strzelecki recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (for injured Julio Teheran) RHP Aidan Maldonado activated from Low-A Carolina’s 7-day injured list LHP Russell Smith activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Norfolk 6, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review the affiliate write-up as part of their Link Report routine: Sounds Humbled by Tides in Series Finale With RHP Jason Alexander (4 2/3 IP, 6 R (5 ER), 10 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks, 1 WP) making his second start of the week, the Tides pounced to take leads of 3-0 by the 2nd inning and 6-2 by the 3rd inning in cruising to a Sunday win over our Sounds. Sounds’ Extras: C Brian Navarreto (2-for-3, double, walk, RBI) was the surprise offensive catalyst on this day, singling and scoring in the 3rd inning, walking but stranded at third base in the 4th inning, then doubling in a run in an attempted 9th inning rally. After Navarreto, three Nashville batters then came to the plate representing the potential game-tying or winning run, but all came up empty. The bullpen of LHPs Darrell Thompson, Clayton Andrews and Alex Claudio covered 3 1/3 scoreless innings to give the offense a chance, with Thompson impressing in particular (3 Ks, retired all four batters). Promotion Watch: DH/INF Luis Urias went 0-for-3, but had a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch. Keston Hiura had the day off. Outside of Navarreto, the main offense came from 3B Patrick Dorrian (solo homer, two walks) and SS Cam Devanney (double, single). Right fielder Tyler Naquin was ejected in the 4th inning, apparently for arguing over a pitch timer violation. Next week’s outlook: Nashville (54-46) hosts Rays’ affiliate Durham (55-47), with rehabbing Brandon Woodruff expected to make his third and final rehab start in the opening game. Rehabbing 3B/RF Brian Anderson is also expected to play for the Sounds this week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 14, Birmingham 1 (in 8 2/3 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Break Out the Offense and the Brooms in Rain-Shortened Series Finale This game was actually close through 5 ½ innings, with the Shuckers escaping a 5th inning jam with a 2-1 lead before erupting for the 10-run 6th inning to the delight of 2,606 home fans. In the end, eight of the nine Biloxi lineup spots recorded at least one hit, with center fielder Jackson Chourio (2-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) leading the way. You can see more of the hit parade at the Biloxi Twitter feed. Shuckers’ Extras: Other highlights from the outburst: 2B Felix Valerio (HR, walk, 2 RBIs) smacked a 2-run homer, while each of Zamora (double, walk, HBP, 3 RBIs), 1B Tyler Black (double, walk, HBP, 2 RBIs) and left fielder Tristen Lutz (two singles, walk) reached base three times. Converted starting RHP James Meeker (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) was making his second start of the week, but managed to shut down the Barons despite having to extend to 86 pitches after SS Freddy Zamora’s 16th error came with two outs in the top of the 5th inning. Kudos to C Brent Diaz (2nd inning RBI single to give Biloxi a 1-0) for contributing after not playing for much of the season, as well as RHP Zach Vennaro, LHP Nick Bennett and LHP Russell Smith for combining on 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. At last year’s trade deadline, the trio of Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell and Joey Wiemer were promoted to AAA. Will we see the same happen on Tuesday with Black, Chourio and C Jeferson Quero? Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (51-45) heads out to play Marlins’ affiliate Pensacola (57-38). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, Cedar Rapids 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Rattlers’ website, game details: Jimenez Tosses a Gem to Beat Kernels 21-year old RHP Edwin Jimenez (7 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 10 Ks) was back in stellar form after a 6-game rough patch, delivering 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball against a solid Cedar Rapids ballclub. He threw 62 strikes in 88 pitches in the masterpiece. As usual for Wisconsin home games, but quite unusual across the minor league landscape, we’re blessed to have extensive video highlights and a nearly 22-minute postgame podcast. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Every Wisconsin batter collected at least one hit, but 2B Jose Acosta (1-for-3, HR, walk, 3 RBIs) delivered the one that mattered via a 3-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning. C Darrien Miller singled twice. RHP Shane Smith (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) was effective in relief to lower his season ERA to 2.05 in 44 innings pitched between Low-A and High-A ball. The Kernels only had one at-bat with a runner in scoring position – i.e. the last batter of the game, who grounded out. Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (42-52) will bus to face Cubs’ affiliate South Bend (43-52), with LHP Nate Peterson expected to start the first game of the series. No Pre-Game Media Notes Available Final: Columbia 3, Carolina 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Carolina Drops the Final Game of the Series 3-1 in Columbia 22-year RHP Will Childers (6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks; season ERA dropped to 5.50) didn’t start, but still produced his best outing of the year, blanking Columbia for six consecutive innings to give the Mudcats’ hitters a chance to come back. Unfortunately, the offense never quite arrived on this day. Mudcats’ Extras: Dependable contributors INF Luke Adams and OF Luis Lara had the day off, so we’ll dream about their possible promotion to High-A ball. Without them, no Mudcat reached base twice, the team had only one extra-base hit (a double by 2B Daniel Guilarte) and the last 12 Carolina batters went down in order. 2022 14th round draft pick RHP Aidan Maldonado (1 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) returned from injury for his first game action in 40 days. Unfortunately, the Fireflies jumped on him with five of the first six batters collecting hits in a 3-run first inning, but very well done to Maldonado in striking out three of the last four batters he faced. Next week’s outlook: Carolina (51-41) travels to face Astros’ affiliate Fayetteville (43-52) in a 7-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Tuesday. Dominican Summer League All-Star Game Final: DSL AL All-Stars 4, DSL NL All-Stars 3 Box Score / Game Log A whopping 70 players participated in the DSL All-Star game, representing 50 teams in the league. Each of DSL Brewers-1 and DSL Brewers-2 had one representative: 17-year old INF Filippo Di Turi has started 22 games at shortstop and 8 games at second base in his Brewers’ career, but was sent out to play third base in this game. The result: a throwing error on the second play of the game, which was the only ball hit to him. This helped lead to three unearned runs as the AL built an early 3-0 lead. Di Turi also grounded out in his only plate appearance. 17-year old OF Yophery Rodriguez entered the game in the 4th inning, playing center field for three innings. He gunned down the lead runner at third base to keep the game 3-1 in top of the 5th inning, then singled in a run in his only plate appearance to reduce the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom half. The NL squad stranded 11 baserunners in the game, including five in the final three innings. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 22. Great write-up as always, @Mass Haas From that DSL All-Star game link, it seems INF Filippo Di Turi is getting a start at 3rd base. Gotta believe we’ll see OF Yophery Rodriguez. Also deserving are INF/OF Demetrio Nadal and OF Brian Sanchez. Pitcher selection is usually unpredictable, based more on who happens to be available. That said, Eric Prado, Enniel Cortez, Melvin Hernandez, Anthony Flores, Aneuris Rodriguez, Gabriel Colmenarez and Jose Meneses are all having solid seasons.
  23. The offseason plan, even if it was flawed, was for Hiura to make the Opening Day MLB roster, splitting DH duties with Winker. But Hiura hit .156 in spring training and more importantly looked totally lost while K’ing 15 times in 32 ABs. So the team grudgingly went with Voit instead. Then, as we often do with players (see Frelick, Almonte and Mathias last year), we watched him tear it up in AAA in April instead of making the gutsy early call to replace Voit, Winker or someone else. We did the exact same thing with Singleton in May, watching him launch 7 homers in 17 games and only reluctantly promoting him in June after Winker got hurt. And now did the same thing with Toro this month, watching him tear it up in AAA but not promoting him even when the MLB player at his natural position (Brian Anderson - 3B) went down.
  24. LHP Bennett Sousa sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers LHP Eric Lauer assigned to ACL Brewers from AAA Nashville (rehab? roster management?) OF Eduarqui Fernandez placed on High-A Wisconsin's 7-day injured list (one day after being activated from it? bizarre)
