Starting RHP Chad Patrick was throwing on 4 days’ rest after an 85-pitch outing on Saturday, so was unsurprisingly limited to 3 2/3 innings and 71 pitches. He struck out 7 of 17 batters faced and issued no walks, but also allowed 5 singles and a 2-run homer (first pitch, 356-foot pull shot with 2 outs in the 2nd inning). Patrick’s velocity peaked at 94.8mph. In a microcosm of their offensive struggle, DH Rhys Hoskins (1-for-3) walked and OF Tyler Black singled in the 4th inning, but their teammates were unable to bring them around, then 3B Oliver Dunn and C Jeferson Quero came aboard via walks while still trailing 2-0 in the 6th inning, but Hoskins K’d and Black flew out. Quero threw out an attempted basestealer to end the 4th inning and LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 Ks) had a 3-up, 3-down 5th inning before four consecutive batters reached against him in Norfolk’s 2-run 6th inning. 1B Ernesto Martinez Jr. had the team’s only extra-base hit (a 7th inning double) and he’s now 11-for-22 during his 6-game hitting streak. SS Freddy Zamora also reached base twice in a 1-for-3, 1-walk, 1-RBI day for him. LHP Raul Alcantara allowed the first two aboard in the 7th inning, but escaped before LHP Jesus Broca retired consecutive batters in the 8th inning only to allow a full count walk, single and 2-run double to break the deadlock. Shuckers’ Extras: In another silver lining, 2B Zavier Warren (1-for-3) returned to action for the first time in 11 days, delivering a double with 1 out in the 5th inning. I would imagine that Luke Adams’ return next week will complete the team’s roster restoration before the Southern League playoffs commence on September 16th. Friday’s outlook: RHP Jaron DeBerry looks to continue his second half surge (1.61 ERA in 28 IP with 29 Ks over his last 5 starts) and lead Biloxi to a 3-1 series lead. And Letson absolutely did his part to lead the team toward a potential victory, allowing no earned runs and striking out 5 batters over 4 innings while he upped his pitch count to 61 (43 strikes). However, an untimely error extended the 6th inning, ultimately resulting in 2 unearned runs coming across. Rehabbing Adams (0-for-2, walk, HBP) is understandably still trying to find his groove after a 2-month absence, but the 21-year old knows how to get on base, drawing a catchers’ interference and scoring to re-knot the game in the 7th inning. Unfortunately, Wisconsin failed to convert a bases loaded, 1-out opportunity in the 8th inning and LHP Anthony Flores had his first difficult outing in about 2 months as the Timber Rattlers fell short. In the 7-inning nightcap, Wisconsin out-hit the Cubs 7-5 and had 3 extra-base hits, but never quite recovered from the 3-run, 29-pitch first inning that starting RHP Sam Garcia (3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 3 H, 4 BB, 3 WP, 4 Ks) labored through. C Marco Dinges’ 12th homer of 2025 made it a 4-2 game in the 4th inning as part of two highly productive games for Dinges (combined 3-for-7, 2 walks, 2 RBIs), but a 2-out, 2-run double off RHP Miles Langhorne dug the hole deeper. Outs on the bases hurt the team in the 3rd and 5th innings, but an OF Luiyin Alastre RBI single cut the deficit to 6-3 and OF Kay-Lan Nicasia walk loaded the bases with 1 out before a strikeout and lineout ended the opportunity – part of a 2-for-13 performance with runners in scoring position. RHP Yerlin Rodriguez struck out 5 of 9 batters faced over 2 solid innings, allowing only a single and a walk to go with an unearned run. Timber Rattlers’ Extras: Along with Dinges, each of Alastre (3-for-7, 2 RBIs, SB), 3B Andrew Fischer (2-for-8, double, RBI) and Nicasia (1-for-4, double, RBI, 3 walks) had solid 2-game numbers. INF Jesus Made went a combined 1-for-8 with a walk, run scored and an error. Entering the second game in a 2-for-44 slump with 1 walk, SS Luis Pena swung at the first pitch his first two times up (both fly outs) before a single to center field in the 5th inning. He also lined out to center field with the bases loaded in his final at-bat. The two contests were a bit of a nightmare for OF Daniel Guilarte (0-for-6, walk, 4 Ks, caught stealing, error), but we know the 21-year old will bounce back. Starting LHP Wande Torres, relief counterpart RHP Joshua Quezada and 1B Eric Bitonti stepped up to the moment in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader, with Bitonti smashing his 19th blast of 2025 to plate SS Brady Ebel (2-for-4, RBI) in the top of the 1st inning. That lead was extended to 5-0 on RBI hits from Ebel (a double for his first professional extra-base hit), OF Handelfry Encarnacion and DH Kevin Garcia in a 3-run third inning. 20-year old Torres (4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) didn’t face any real tension until the bottom of the 3rd inning, allowing a 2-out walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases and running the count to 3-and-1 before getting the key ground ball out. 20-year old Quezada (3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks) was tasked with covering the final 3 innings and did so with aplomb, striking out 5 of the first 7 batters he faced and also limiting the final inning damage to 1 run despite loading the bases with nobody out in that frame. In the crucial nightcap, a 2-out, 1st inning single plated 2 runs against 18-year old starting LHP Enderson Mercado, but OF Jose Anderson quickly responded with a 2-run shot to bring home OF Josiah Ragsdale (1-for-3, walk, RBI) in the bottom half of the inning. Yes, Carolina was the home team in this particular game, a make-up of their July 13 rain-out. A 2-run homer restored Fredericksburg’s advantage in the 4th inning and consecutive extra-base hits to open the 5th frame chased Mercado (4 1/3 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks), but the Mudcats were back in business in the bottom of the 5th inning, down 5-3 with the bases loaded and 1 out. Unfortunately, a pitching change fizzled that rally. The doubleheader split means that the Mudcats’ season is now down to its final strike, as they need to reel off 3 victories over their final 3 games at Fredericksburg (and hope for at least one Fayetteville loss elsewhere) to overcome a 2-game deficit in the standings and claim a playoff berth. Mudcats’ Extras: INF Filippo Di Turi had solid production over the 2 games (3-for-5, walk), while Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the one game he played in. The second game marked the full season affiliate debut of 2B Juan Ortuno, who returned to game action after a 3-month injury absence, collecting a 7th inning single as part of a 1-for-2 evening with an HBP. Three outfield assists by Ragsdale, Encarnacion and Anderson weren’t enough to overcome the 10-to-4 hit differential in the second contest, but that’s still some notable defense over 7 innings. RHP Bryan Rivera covered 2 2/3 IP of relief in the second game, registering 4 strikeouts while allowing 2 runs. Friday’s outlook: 19-year old RHP Miqueas Mercedes is set for his 2nd Low-A start (5th appearance), needing a breakout performance after allowing 21 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings over his last 4 games. Hey, a Ragsdale single and Jose Anderson 2-run shot knot things back in the bottom of the 1st. Sweet!! Anderson nearly hit for the cycle in yesterday’s tough loss, so that’s back-to-back homer days for him.

Sadly, a 2-out, 2-run single to center gives Fredericksburg a quick 2-0 lead in Game 2 of Carolina’s doubleheader. Carolina is the home team in this contest, as it’s a make-up game from an earlier home series.

Nicasia stays hot, doubling home Dinges, but that’s all we get. Down 3-1 in the 2nd inning.

Salem just turned a 2-0 early deficit into a 6-2 lead in the 4th inning against Fayetteville. That’d be a helpful result for our Mudcats, who are battling Fayetteville and Fredericksburg for a playoff spot.

Garcia had an unpleasant 3-run, 29-pitch first inning, conceding a double, 2 singles and 2 walks. But a Dinges walk and Baez single have us in business in the 2nd inning.

After finishing up yesterday’s rain-suspended game with a close loss, Wisconsin is tied 1-1 in their series at South Bend. LHP Anthony Flores had been on such a great run: 1 ER over last 20 IP with 24 Ks; 3 ER over last 26 IP with 31 Ks. But tonight he gives up a single and homer to the first 2 batters he faces in the bottom of the 8th inning in South Bend. Shoot! Timber Rattlers trail 5-3.

Great job by Quezada to close it out in Fredericksburg, even after loading the bases with nobody out in the 9th. He allowed just 1 run over 3 innings, registering 6 Ks in 54 pitches to save arms for Game 2 tonight. That’s a 5-1 Mudcats’ win in Game 1.

Kind of a nightmare game for Guilarte, as his error in center field extended the 6th inning with Letson on the mound, ultimately resulting in 2 unearned runs for a 3-2 deficit. Now he Ks (0-for-4, 3 Ks between yesterday and today) with the bases loaded, 1 out in the top of the 8th inning with the game tied 3-3. And Luke Adams grounds out to strand ‘em. To the bottom of the 8th they go in South Bend. Letson has thrown 4 innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out 5.

And Quezada felt my slight, so he balls out by retiring 6 of 7 batters, includes 5 via strikeout. 5-0 lead entering the final inning!

I was wrong. RHP Joshua Quezada is in for the 5th inning. Hold on tight.

Torres is at 69 pitches thru 4 innings, but I’ve got to imagine he’ll continue and break his season-high of 76 next frame. The team needs to get thru 4 more games yet this week. Mudcats still up 5-0.

High-A Wisconsin’s rain-suspended game from yesterday in South Bend has resumed with the good guys leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning. It’s 20-year old RHP Bishop Letson on the hill for his 4th outing after missing 3+ months (2.1 IP, 2 R, 3 Ks in 49 pitches last week).

Whew. Torres escapes a bases loaded self-creation (1B, WP, BB, HBP) in the 3rd inning by getting a 5-3 groundout to Lameda with the count 3-and-1. On to the 4th, leading 5-0.

Yesiree Bob! 3 runs on 5 hits in that 3rd inning, including RBI doubles by Ebel and Encarnacion. 5-0, though we did strand the bases loaded in that frame.

Fine start for Eric Bitonti and the Mudcats, plating Brady Ebel after he’d singled to center. 2-0 thru 1 inning. That’s 19 dingers for our league-leading slugger.
