However, Manager Joe Ayrault has instilled some crazy confidence in these Timber Rattlers, who found another way to win, this time despite being down 3-0 and out-hit 10-1 entering the bottom of the 9th inning. RHP Max Lazar got the start, but was limited to just two innings (plus two leadoff walks in the 3rd inning) after pitching on Tuesday earlier in the week. Three TinCap 2nd inning hits put the Rattlers behind 2-0, which seemed likely to hold up against stellar Fort Wayne pitching. Thankfully, Wisconsin’s pitching and fielding kept them in the game, starting with RHP Tyler Gillies and C Alex Hall combining to eliminate that 2-on, nobody out 3rd inning threat: Strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out to catch the lead runner at 3rd base Another caught stealing, this time at 2nd base RHP TJ Shook came into the 2-0 game in the 4th inning, providing a near-certainty that the game would remain within reach: Two infield singles in the 5th inning didn’t faze Shook, who induced two ground-outs to exit that inning cleanly Shook responded to a 1-out, 7th inning double by striking out the next two batters However, a Fort Wayne run-scoring double off RHP Robbie Baker extended the TinCap lead to 3-0 in the 8th inning, which looked somewhat insurmountable after no Rattlers reached base in the bottom half of the inning. I mean, in the midst of a 6-game losing streak, down 2-0 with 2 outs in the 8th inning after mustering only 1 hit to that point in a frustrating contest, one could not reasonably expect the team to pull itself off the mat. And yet, the Shuckers showed their resiliency, tying it up against the odds and even taking an extra-inning lead before succumbing to the 7th straight loss, this one of the walk-off variety. RHP Tyler Herb was once again fantastic, starting a second game of the week and throwing blanks for 5 straight innings. Herb dispatched the most dangerous threat after a walk and hit in the 5th inning by notching a 3-pitch strikeout and inducing a 1-3 groundout. Unfortunately, Biloxi’s offense was downright pitiful through most of this one, putting the minimum number of men to the plate (21) through seven innings, though we must credit Montgomery’s terrific defense: A 1st inning walk by Sal Frelick was eliminated by being caught stealing A 5th inning Ashton McGee liner back to the pitcher enabled Felix Valerio (who’d singled) to be doubled up off of first base A 6th inning Cam Devanney liner to second base caught Brent Diaz (who’d walked) off of first base After solid 6th inning work by RHP Matt Hardy, the Biscuits ultimately grabbed a 2-0 lead with two doubles, a single and a sacrifice fly off of RHP Nash Walters in the 7th inning. However, with two outs in the top of the 8th inning, Biloxi responded, with McGee earning a full count walk and Brent Diaz pulling the first pitch he saw out to left field (his 3rd home runs of 2022) to knot the contest at 2-2. Diaz then threw out an attempted base stealer at 2nd base to send the game to extra innings, where McGee came through with a 2-out single to score Manfred’s ghost (Freddy Zamora) and give the Shuckers a 3-2 lead. OF Jonathan Davis capped off Nashville’s comeback with an RBI single in extra innings. Sizeable early leads for Carolina and Biloxi couldn’t hold up. Antoine Kelly’s 10-K, 1-hit performance wasn’t enough for Wisconsin. Although promising nights turned sour for Carolina, Biloxi and Wisconsin on Thursday night, that means there were a number of solid performances as well. Hopefully the young men can take some inspiration from Nashville, which put men on base all night and eventually snatched victory from defeat. The stars of the night were Wisconsin’s exciting prospect LHP Antoine Kelly, who dutifully bounced back from his shortest stint of the season (3 IP on April 29th) to dominate the TinCaps for 5 innings and AAA Nashville’s bullpen which blanked Norfolk for 5 1/3 innings to give the offense a chance. On some other positive notes, it was great to see RF Hendry Mendez back in action after departing Tuesday’s game early and LHP Jakob Brustoski threw a clean inning to put some early season struggles behind him. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fort Wayne 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: TinCaps Hold Off Late Rattler Rally It was a classic pitchers’ duel in Appleton, as Wisconsin’s LHP Antoine Kelly and Fort Wayne’s LHP Noel Vela posted nearly identical lines: 5 innings each, zero runs each, 10 strikeouts each. The two young studs didn’t even throw a wild pitch or hit a batter, so the only difference was the 3 hits yielded by Vela and the 1 hit and 1 walk given up by Kelly. This left it to the bullpens and unfortunately the TinCaps had the advantage on this night, though Wisconsin certainly had its chances, leaving 10 men on base and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. With Kelly’s exit after 5 innings, Fort Wayne quickly seized its chance, with the second batter (OF Corey Rosier) that RHP Miguel Guerrero faced hitting a first-pitch home run to right center field. Excellent work by RHP Joey Matulovich kept the game at 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Wisconsin took 4 walks (the last a full count RBI walk by Miller) to tie it up. However, RHP James Meeker is still searching for his 2020/2021 form and hasn’t found it yet. He opened the 9th inning with a hit-by-pitch, then issued a full count walk and a gave up an infield single to load the bases. Meeker nearly escaped the inning by getting a swinging strike out for the 2nd out. Unfortunately, consecutive singles gave Fort Wayne a 4-1 lead and RHP Robbie Baker came in to strand the remaining two runners, which he successfully did. The Wisconsin half of the 9th inning actually mirrored Fort Wayne’s, with leadoff man Carlos D. Rodriguez reaching via a hit-by-pitch, then 3 walks and another hit-by-pitch bringing the game to 4-3, bases loaded with two outs, before Miller struck out swinging to end the interesting affair. LHP Nick Bennett escaped a bases loaded, 1-out jam in the first inning by inducing a ground ball double play. Consecutive hits to lead off the second inning by OF Joey Wiemer (10th double of the season) and 2B Felix Valerio set up Thomas Dillard to smash his first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast. OF Sal Frelick added an RBI single in the 4th inning, as he continues to hit at every level, stretching the lead to 4-0, but Montgomery got to Bennett to even things up in the bottom half of the inning with 3 hits, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice which couldn’t catch a runner at home. C Jakson Reetz continues to surprise, parking his 4th home run in just 44 at bats this year to help the club re-take the lead in the 6th inning, but RHP JT Hintzen wasn’t able to hold it in the bottom half. Reetz actually left the game before the bottom of the 7th inning with Biloxi down 7-5, so we’ll need to see whether this was an injury or just a case of Nick Kahle sharing catching duties on the night. After Hintzen exited, Montgomery didn’t let up against the Shuckers’ next three relievers, adding 7 runs to turn it into a rout. Nashville tied it back up in the 3rd inning on a 2-run single by C Alex Jackson, plating 2B Mark Mathias and 1B Tyler White who had both singled. Boushley exited with 2-on, 2-out in the 5th inning, but JC Mejia gave up an infield single and walk to allow the Tides to re-take the lead. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Nashville loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a Jonathan Davis bunt, but only managed one run on a Brice Turang sacrifice fly. Like Friday’s nightcap, the Mudcats faced a formidable deficit, this time down 4-0 entering the 8th inning. But let’s go back to the beginning and acknowledge the work of RHP Miguel Segura, who gave up just three walks and three hits, including an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth inning. Though the Mudcat offense wasn’t ready to produce just yet, Segura was assisted defensively by CF Hedbert Perez throwing out a runner at second base and C Jose Sibrian catching an attempted base stealer in the fourth inning. Trailing 2-0, Segura handed over to RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, who started poorly (triple, wild pitch, home run) but retired six of the following seven batters to keep Carolina within striking distance, down 4-0. Now back to the heroics. Walks by Sibrian and LF Arbert Cipion brought SS Eduardo Garcia to the place. Despite an 0-2 count, Garcia planted the next pitch over the left-field wall to cut the Wood Duck lead to 4-3. Still down 4-3, this time with two outs and nobody in the top of the ninth inning, 3B Jheremy Vargas came to the plate, hitless to this point in the night. Facing Down East stud 22-year-old LHP Destin Dotson (0.00 ERA, 0.48 WHIP, 14.8 K/9 in 10 1/3 innings entering the contest), the 18-year-old Vargas blasted a 1-0 pitch to center field to knot the contest at 4-4. HP Jakob Brustoski put in his best work of the year, striking out two in the eighth and working around a hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and walk in the ninth inning to bring the game to extra innings. In the tenth, a double by Cipion brought Garcia to the plate with 2-on, 1-out. This time, Garcia again ripped a ball to left field, a 2-run double to deliver Carolina its first lead of the game, 6-4. RHP Trevor Tietz then handled the tenth with aplomb, striking out three hitters around one walk to not even allow Manfred’s ghost to score. That’s Tietz’s 3rd save and fourth straight clean inning. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 6, Wisconsin 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Peoria Powers Past Wisconsin Down 4-1 in the series, Wisconsin and LHP Russell Smith needed a strong game and initially appeared on course, up 3-0 in the fourth inning. After Smith worked out of two-on situations in the first and third innings, the Timber Rattlers put together two doubles (Sal Frelick, Zavier Warren), a single (Joe Gray Jr.), a walk (Wes Clarke), two stolen bases (Gray twice) and a sacrifice fly (Carlos D. Rodriguez) to take a 3-0 lead. However, Smith wasn’t quite able to work out of a three-on situation in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two walks and an infield single had loaded the bases for Peoria’s 20-year-old SS Masyn Winn, who hit the first pitch, a three-run triple to tie up the contest at 3-3. {Note: We’d have to see the video to understand whether the ball fell between three defenders in shallow right and rolled to the wall or exactly what transpired.} Our shell-shocked Timber Rattlers then called upon RHP Zach Mort, who’d had an excellent month of April (0.00 ERA, 0.63 WHIP in 8 innings) but will want to forget this appearance immediately: Home run to right field Fly out to left field Home run to right-center field Home run to right-center field The Rattlers’ appeared close to finding their inner Mudcat in the 7th inning, with a left field Tristan Peters triple bringing home 2B Ethan Murray with one out. However, the team couldn’t drive him home and fell 6-4 for a crushing series loss (one win, five losses). As much as we emphasize the positives, it’s also important to note possible areas of concern. It is in this vein that we mention that the Chiefs stole another 4 bases in this contest, with nobody caught stealing. That brings Miller’s 2022 stats to an anemic two runners caught vs. 26 stolen bases. Obviously, this will be an area of focus for improvement going forward for the 21-year old. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola 4, Biloxi 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Fall in Sunday’s Game 4-1 LHP Andy Otero did his best to keep his team in the contest, only yielding one run (unearned) before exiting after issuing a full count walk with one out in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Otero has to wear that unearned run however, as it was on the back of his own fielding error and two walks to load the bases with nobody out in the third inning, escaping with a run-scoring double play and a strikeout. Offensively, some solid Shuckers’ chances came and went early in the contest, with CF Joey Wiemer and DH Luis Urias stranded at second and third after a Wiemer double (first inning) and LF Noah Campbell left at second base after his 1-out double (third inning). Down 1-0, Otero handed over RHP JT Hintzen, who gave up a two-run homer to his first batter, then another double and single to leave Biloxi in a 4-0 hole. The team clawed one run back in the bottom of the 8th inning on a Urias RBI groundout to score 2B Gabe Holt (who’d singled), but that was all the offense could muster on this night. In all, Biloxi can be pleased with its pitching in the 3-3 series tie, giving up just nine runs in the last five games of the week.
