  1. I wonder if we’ll acquire any reliever, given that we’ve four injured hurlers in the last stage of their recovery (Peralta, Cousins, Topa, Perdomo all pitching in MILB rehab stints) and the initial positive production from Jake McGee (though a very small sample size).
  2. A day of solid pitching and late production delivered walk-off wins for ACL Brewers Gold and DSL Brewers-1, the latter in Game Two of its doubleheader. ACL Brewers Blue and DSL Brewers-1 (its opener) each dropped one-run games, despite excellent pitching. Henrison Mota didn’t yield an earned run in five inning of work, though ACL Brewers Gold still needed to come back from a 4-1 deficit, which they did in a walk-off 5-4 win over ACL Athletics. Jadher Areinamo tripled and reached base three times in the victory. Yujanyer Herrera was also solid in striking out seven ACL Reds over 5 2/3 innings, though ACL Brewers Blue ultimately fell 4-3 due to four errors and only four hits. DSL Brewers-2 had the day off, while DSL Brewers-1 played a doubleheader against DSL Texas Blue, dropping the opener 2-1 in spite of Manuel Rodriguez conceding only one earned run over five innings. Thankfully, they scratched out a 2-1 walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader on the strong effort of three pitchers. Gery Holguin reached base six times in the two 7-inning games. Transactions: LHP Ethan Small recalled to MLB Milwaukee from AAA Nashville OF Abraham Almonte traded to Boston from AAA Nashville for cash considerations RHP Luis Contreras assigned to AA Biloxi from AAA Nashville RHP JT Hintzen released from AA Biloxi INF Jean Carmona released from Low-A Carolina RHP Connor Sadzeck designated for assignment from MLB Milwaukee Game Action: ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Reds 4, ACL Brewers Blue 3 Box Score / Game Log This tough loss drops ACL Brewers Blue to 13-21 on the year. 18-year old RHP Yujanyer Herrrera (5 2/3 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 4 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 7 Ks) breezed through his initial five innings, only conceding an unearned run, a single and a walk, before perhaps tiring in the 6th inning when he yielded two runs on three hits. OF Jace Avina (1-for-3, walk, RBI) has not (yet) been promoted to Carolina, so instead delivered the squad’s first hit, an RBI single in the 3rd inning. The lead grew to 3-1, thanks in part to two Blue batters reaching base via strikeouts (wild pitch, throwing error) in the top of the 6th inning, before ACL Reds finally got to Herrera to knot it 3-3 in the 6th inning. The Reds grabbed their fourth run and the only lead they would need on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 7th inning. Blue only managed to produce just one hit in the final five innings, a one-out double from 1B Quinton Low in the 8th inning which unfortunately resulted in no runs. Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Athletics 4 Box Score / Game Log The win brings ACL Brewers Gold’s record back up to 18-16. 19-year old Henrison Mota (5 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks) walked the first two batters of the game, before settling in to deliver a fine start. The first of his unearned runs was due to his own error in the 1st inning, while the second was caused by a dropped ball at first base. 18-year old 3B Jadher Areinamo (2-for-4, triple, walk, RBI) opened up the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple, then scored on the Athletics second error of the inning. The A’s would graciously commit five errors in the game. LHP Jakob Brustoski continues to work on harnessing his arsenal, unfortunately throwing six wild pitches in two innings of work, though he also managed five strikeouts and only conceded two runs as Gold fell behind 4-1. 1B Branlyn Jaraba brought home SS Gregory Barrios (1-for-4, walk, RBI) and OF Luis Castillo with a 2-run single in the 6th inning, while Gold’s tying run scored without a hit in the 7th inning. RHP Raul Mendoza earned the win with two scoreless innings, as Barrios came through with a game-winning infield single with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the 9th inning. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Game One: DSL Texas Blue 2, DSL Brewers1 1 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log In the opener, 16-year old RHP Manuel Rodriguez was solid again (5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 3 Ks), but the offense went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 8 runners (vs. 3 runners for Texas) in a 2-1 loss. The team managed to load the bases with one out against Texas' 22-year old closer (unfair!) in the final inning, but couldn't punch the tying run across. Game Two: DSL Brewers1 2, Texas Blue 1, (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Victory in the second game brought DSL Brewers-1’s record to 13-22. Commencing the second game without three of their most consistent offensive contributors (Luis Lara, Edgardo Ordonez, Arnys Rodriguez) was a bold strategy, but it worked thanks to great pitching and no errors in a 2-1 extra inning victory. 18-year old LHP Jhofez Mejias was excellent in his last relief outing, so earned his first start in eight appearances and didn't disappoint (4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). 19-year old RHP Hamlet Vasquez followed with three scoreless innings (3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks). The Brewers' 2nd hit of the game came off the bat of 16-year old 3B Gery Holguin (1-for-2, 2 walks, 2 RBIs) and was clutch, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning. With 2-on, 1-out in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Brewers brought in Lara as a pinch hitter to try to walk it off, but unfortunately he struck out while the lead runner was also thrown out trying for 3rd base. In the extra inning, 18-year old RHP Dikember Sanchez got the call, striking out two batters and not allowing Manfred's ghost to move. That set the stage for another potential Brewers' walk-off, which they got...literally. Three walks (the second intentional) brought home the winning run, with Holguin again collecting the RBI. 4. Biloxi and Carolina grabbed series-clinching wins over tough competition with solid 7-3 victories. Wisconsin was swept in a doubleheader, as the bats disappointed. Nashville gave up four home runs to lose their finale in Louisville. Cam Devanney led the Biloxi offense with three hits and four runs batted in, while Carlos Luna and Noah Zavolas were excellent in covering the full nine innings, giving Biloxi a 7-3 win over Pensacola. Carlos F. Rodriguez was his usual exceptional self for the Mudcats, while the offense came through with a 6-run 5th inning in their 7-3 win over Down East. The Timber Rattlers produced only two runs in their doubleheader sweep at the hands of Beloit, spoiling a fine pitching effort by Antoine Kelly in the opening game. Nashville gave up big hits and left too many men on base in their series-deciding 9-5 loss at Louisville, despite Jon Singleton and Keston Hiura combining for two home runs and five RBIs. Sunday’s Game Balls go to Devanney, Rodriguez, Kelly, Luna and Singleton, with apologies to Hiura and Zavolas. Transactions: OF Jackson Chourio promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Freddy Peralta commenced rehab assignment at AAA Nashville Game Action: Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Louisville 9, Nashville 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Bats Power Past Sounds on Sunday DH/1B Jon Singleton (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) continued his terrific 3-game series (6-for-13, 3 HR, 8 RBIs), giving Nashville a 1-0 lead with a 1st inning single. However, the Sounds stranded four runners in the first two innings, a theme of the game. Rehabbing RHP Freddy Peralta (2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks) returned to action for the first time since May 22, throwing 33 pitches (22 strikes) over two innings and exiting with the score tied 1-1. Peralta gave up a home run on his very first pitch and also walked the lead-off batter in the 2nd inning, which were the sole blemishes in his encouraging comeback. RHP Luis Perdomo pitched a 1-2-3 third inning in his fourth rehab appearance for Nashville, though he’s yet to throw more than 14 pitches in any outing. RHP Josh Lindblom was unfortunately battered for four runs in the 4th inning to set Nashville back 5-1, though 2B Keston Hiura (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs) closed the gap to 5-4 by smashing his fourth homer in AAA this year, a 3-run shot in the top of the 5th inning. However, two more runners were stranded in that frame. Lindblom gave up a single and a walk in the bottom of the 5th inning, but nearly escaped via a caught stealing (thank you C Mario Feliciano), fly out and ground ball, but Hiura booted the latter. Lindblom then walked his final batter before giving way to RHP Zack Brown, who conceded a walk and a back-breaking grand slam to trail 9-4. Singleton homered in on a 2-0 pitch in the 7th inning to claw back to 9-5, while Nashville's bullpen of RHPs Matt Hardy, Trevor Kelley and Luis Contreras combined on three scoreless, hitless innings to give the offense a chance. However, Nashville stranded three more runners in the 8th inning to complete a frustrating night, as Hiura grounded out in his opportunity to play hero. 22-year old leadoff man SS Brice Turang (1-for-2, 3 walks, SB) reached base four times in the game, as he continues to perform at a high level (season slash: .282 AVG / .349 OBP / .378 SLG). Next week’s outlook: The 55-37 Sounds return home, facing 34-59 Charlotte this week. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Pensacola 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Devanney's Perfect Night Drives Shuckers To 7-3 Victory 3B Cam Devanney (3-for-3, HR, 4 RBIs) may be the surprise of the season, once again stepping up for this talented Biloxi offense. RHP Carlos Luna (5 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks) retired the first 11 batters he faced before conceding consecutive 2-out home runs in the 4th inning, as the Shuckers found themselves behind 2-0. Thankfully, the Biloxi offense immediately responded with 4th inning doubles from OF Garrett Mitchell (1-for-4, double), OF Joey Wiemer (2-for-3, double, walk, SB) and 1B Noah Campbell (1-for-4, double, RBI), a single from DH Tristen Lutz and a Devanney sacrifice fly, giving the team a 3-2 lead which it would not relinquish. Devanney’s second hit of the game extended the Shucker advantage to 4-2 in the 5th inning. RHP Noah Zavolas (4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks) entered in the 6th inning, getting a rough start by yielding a double and RBI single (4-3 lead), before settling in to retire eight straight batters in a fine outing. C Brent Diaz (1-for-4, HR, RBI) re-established the 2-run lead with his 7th homer of 2022, a solo shot in the 6th inning. Devanney completed his evening with a 2-run homer (15th of the season) in the 7th inning to push Biloxi’s advantage to 7-3. Whether his bat is hot or not, it’s excellent to see Wiemer continue to contribute in all manners, including his 24th stolen base of 2022 and this web-gem: Next week’s outlook: 42-46 Biloxi remains home to take on 41-42 Montgomery this week. RHP Victor Castaneda is expected to start the series opener. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Beloit 1, Wisconsin 0 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Beloit 5, Wisconsin 2 (final in 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, Game One details: Unearned Run Beats Wisconsin in Game One Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, Game Two details: Rattlers Drop Game Two 5-2 to Sky Carp LHP Antoine Kelly (5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 4 H, 3 BB, 7 Ks) threw 100 pitches (64 strikes) and deserved a better fate, but was instead saddled with a loss as the Timber Rattler bats couldn’t produce in the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader. The only run which Beloit needed came via a walk, two stolen bases and a throwing error in the first inning. 1B Ashton McGee (2-for-3, double) doubled in the 2nd inning and added a leadoff 7th inning single, but his teammates couldn’t come through. A two-on, nobody out 3rd inning opportunity (SS Antonio Pinero single, OF Terence Doston walk) also yielded nothing, while another two runners were stranded in the 6th inning (OF Joe Gray Jr. double, OF Tristan Peters walk). Kudos to RHP Joey Matulovich (2 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K) for two strong innings of relief work in the opening 1-0 loss. In the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, the Sky Carp scored in each of the first three innings against RHP Justin Jarvis (4 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) in building a 5-0 lead. RHPs Zach Mort, James Meeker and Taylor Floyd kept a flicker of hope alive with three scoreless innings, with Mort in particular striking out three batters. Wisconsin’s last push produced two runs on three hits in the 6th inning by Peters (2-for-3), Gray (1-for-3, double) and DH Darrien Miller (1-for-2, walk, RBI), but that was as close as they’d come in the 5-2 series finale, sadly concluding a 3-game sweep by Beloit. At least the team made some fine defensive plays along the way: Next week’s outlook: 48-41 Wisconsin will also remain home, hosting 55-35 Cedar Rapids, with OF Jackson Chourio expected to join the squad from Tuesday. LHP Russell Smith is scheduled to start the opening game. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 7, Down East 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details: Mudcats Score Six in the Fifth to Down the Wood Ducks After showing he was mortal in his last outing, 20-year old RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) was back in shutdown mode on Sunday to lead the Mudcats to a series clinching victory. OF Hendry Mendez (1-for-3, SF, RBI) got things started right away, singling to lead off the bottom of the first and extend his hitting streak to 13 games. OF Jackson Chourio (1-for-4, double) followed with his 23rd double of the season and OF Hedbert Perez (1-for-3, triple, SF, RBI) delivered the first run via sacrifice fly. A 3rd inning Wood Duck homer knotted the affair at 1-1, though Rodriguez’s defense came to his aid by throwing out two runners at third base in the same inning (left fielder Perez on a single; C Jeferson Quero on an attempted steal). Quero gunned down another robbery attempt in the top of the 5th inning (this time at second base) and Down East thankfully went to their bullpen in the bottom half of the inning, enabling Carolina to unleash its pent-up offense. In that 5th inning, the Mudcats produced six runs on four hits and two hit batsmen, with the big hits coming through a Perez triple and 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, HR, RBI) solo homer (6th of the year) for a 7-1 advantage. RHPs Fernando Olguin and Miguel Guerrero were both effective in relief, throwing scoreless 6th and 9th innings, respectively. This was Olguin’s fourth straight short appearance after working as a starter or long man in his first eight outings. Mr. Chourio was promoted to High-A Wisconsin after the game, ending his unforgettable 62-game stretch in Carolina with a .324 / .373 / .600 slash line in 271 plate appearances, including 40 extra-base hits, 47 RBIs, 51 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Way to go Jackson!!! Next week’s outlook: 45-45 Carolina hits the road to face 38-50 Fayetteville this week. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE DSL NL All-Stars 6, DSL AL All-Stars 6 Box Score / Game Log 17-year old switch-hitting OF Luis Lara and 18-year old left-handed hitting 1B/OF Yeison Perez represented the Brewers, along with the somewhat surprising selection of 17-year old LHP Wande Torres. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. While the full season affiliates have their travel day on Monday, the short season DSL and ACL clubs are back in action. 6. Eight extra base hits powered ACL Brewers Blue to a victory. ACL Brewers Gold lost big in spite of nine hits. DSL Brewers-1 were stopped by rain in the 3rd inning. DSL Brewers-2 lost a shortened five inning game. All minor league squads return to action on Friday. After having the spotlight to themselves for a few days, the Brewers’ two Dominican short season clubs were joined in action by the two Arizona short season clubs on Thursday. Outfielders Jace Avina and Eduarqui Fernandez (combined 6-for-9, 2 HR, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs) led ACL Brewers Blue to a 9-3 lead, which the squad barely held on to in a 9-8 victory over ACL Athletics. ACL Brewers Gold produced nine hits, but only two runs in a 10-2 loss to ACL Guardians. DSL Brewers-1 raced out to a 6-0 lead in the 1st inning, then conceded 11 unanswered runs before being suspended by rain down 11-6 in the 3rd inning against DSL Tigers-1. DSL Brewers-2’s pitchers struggled for control, issuing eight walks in their five-inning loss to DSL Cardinals by a score of 4-2. Transactions: LHP Jacob Brustoski assigned to ACL Brewers Gold from Low-A Carolina As feared, injured 2B/CF Tyler Black is done for the season, but thankfully should be fine for 2023, per this WTMJ interview with VP of Domestic Scouting Tod Johnson which colleague @Maas_Haas noted Game Action: ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Brewers Blue 9, ACL Athletics 8 Box Score / Game Log ACL Brewers Blue improves to 13-18 on the season. 19-year-old OF Jace Avina (2-for-4, HR, HBP, RBI) hit his sixth home run of 2022 to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. His season OPS is up to .991 in 105 plate appearances. 20-year-old OF Eduarqui Fernandez continues to let his bat do the talking, hitting a home run (5th of the year) and two doubles as he went 4-for-5 to raise his season OPS to .852 in 117 plate appearances. The downside remains his 48 strikeouts (vs. 11 walks). He also has four stolen bases this year and hasn’t been caught. Fernandez doubled in a run for a 2-1 lead in the 1st inning, singled and scored in the 3rd inning (4-1 scoreline), hit a solo homer in the 5th inning (6-2 advantage) and doubled again in the 8th inning. 18-year-old SS Daniel Guilarte has been in a mini-slump, but still managed an RBI double in the 8th inning. He went 1-for-5 on the day with three strikeouts, but retains a solid .345 average and .838 OPS on the season. 19-year-old 2B Alexander Perez (1-for-3, triple, RBI; .837 season OPS) tripled in a run in the 4th inning, but departed the game in the 6th inning. Let’s hope this was a planned exit / sharing of playing time, but we’ll have to wait and see when Perez is back in action. 19-year-old starting RHP Jared Albir (5.70 season ERA) struck out six batters as he fought his way through traffic (4 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks). Fellow 19-year-old RHP Jesus Rivero (9.19 season ERA) deservedly earned the victory with three shutout innings (3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 4 Ks). 24-year-old LHP Leoni De La Cruz managed to earn a save without retiring a batter at the plate. He entered after the Athletics scored five runs in the 9th inning to cut the lead to 9-8 with two outs and the tying run on second base. De La Cruz walked the only batter he faced, but 17-year-old C Felipe Valderrama threw out the lead runner trying to steal third base to the end the game. Final: ACL Guardians 10, ACL Brewers Gold 2 Box Score / Game Log The loss drops ACL Brewers Gold to 15-16 this year. After not yielding an earned run over 15 1/3 innings, 19-year-old RHP Gerson Calzadilla (4 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 2 Ks) ran into trouble with two outs in the 2nd inning, giving up five consecutive hits to fall behind 5-0. The Men in Gold produced nine hits, but hit into two double plays and had a runner thrown out trying to stretch a single. 19-year-old 3B Miguel Briceno continues to enjoy life since his promotion to Arizona, going 3-for-3 with a walk in this game. His 1.056 OPS (32 plate appearances) in Arizona is amazing, but so is his .591 BABIP. He’s 18-for-44 (DSL and ACL) on the season, with 14 singles and 4 doubles. 18-year-old OF Luis Castillo (1-for-3, walk) continues his mini-slump, but still managed to reach base twice to keep solid season numbers: .303 average, .927 OPS. 18-year-old SS Gregory Barrios reached base three times (2-for-3, walk) to raise his season average to .278 and OPS to .668. 18-year-old 2B Jadher Areinamo (0-for-4) had a rare off game, but retains a .324 average and .902 OPS. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Suspended: DSL Tigers 11, DSL Brewers1 6 (rain delay in 3rd inning) Box Score / Game Log DSL Brewers-1’s six-run 1st inning lead evaporated quickly as the team yielded 11 runs on nine hits, eight walks and a hit batsman in just 2 1/3 innings of work. The squad now trails 11-6 with one out and a runner on third base. Before the suspension for lightning, OF Duncan Garcia (.755 season OPS) hit a double and walked in his two plate appearances, while C Edgardo Ordonez (.866 season OPS) and DH/OF Luis Lara (.841 season OPS) each grabbed a base hit as they try to regain their early season form. 17-year old C/1B Ludwin Tejada hasn’t gotten much playing time this season, but went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs here to raise his season OPS to .924 in 35 plate appearances. 19-year old OF/IF Luis Watter has struggled (.555 season OPS), but hit an RBI double, walked and had an outfield assist in this abbreviated contest. Final: DSL Cardinals 4, DSL Brewers2 2 (final in 5 innings) Box Score / Game Log The loss drops DSL Brewers2 to 18-16 in 2022. 18-year-old starting RHP Daurys Mora (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks) saw his first action since June 27, pitching two scoreless innings. Relievers issued eight walks in the 3rd and 4th innings as the team fell into a 4-0 hole. However, presumably with rain threatening, the Brewers hit four consecutive singles to start off the bottom of the 5th inning, cutting the deficit to 4-1 with the potential game-tying on first base, nobody out and Mr. Consistent SS Juan Baez up at the plate. Unfortunately, 17-year-old Baez (0-for-3 in this game; .302 season average; 759 season OPS) hit into a ground ball double play and the Cardinals ultimately escaped the inning with a 4-2 advantage. The game was called and declared final in the top of the 6th inning. Neither 18-year-old 1B/OF Yeison Perez (0-for-1, walk; season OPS 1.090) nor 18-year-old C Brayan Oropeza (0-for-2; season OPS .926) managed a hit in this game, but 17-year-old OF Francisco Nina had a nice day (2-for-2; season OPS .747). 8. @Mass Haas picked up two nuggets: - 16th round selection Ethan Lege is not a sure thing to sign, as he'd committed to Mississippi in November 2021: https://www.theadvocate.com/acadiana/sports/high_schools/article_eadbf5ec-07b5-11ed-810c-2f3f40f07efc.html - 15th round pick Satchell Norman intends to sign: https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/sports/2022/07/19/brewers-select-former-sailor-norman-15th-round-mlb-draft/10100976002/
  9. 17 Neal (LSU) and 18 Cijntije (Mississippi State) both stated on Twitter that they’ll stick with their college commitments. LSU online fans sound confident that 19 Noot will honor his university commitment, but in contrast 15 Norman is getting a lot of congratulatory messages. VP Domestic Scouting Tod Johnson mentioned how difficult it may be to keep 13 Petty from sticking with Texas Tech. Trying to read the tea leaves, 15 Satchell Norman sounds most likely to sign, while 12 Luke Adams is worth crossing fingers for.
  10. Well, last year the Brewers signed 5 of the 10 late draft picks, not agreeing terms with 3 high schoolers and 2 JUCO-1’s. I assume that means we’re well-placed to sign 11 Wagner, 14 Maldonado (whom we also drafted in 2018), 16 Lege and 20 Hall. Of the remainder, 5 are recent high school graduates who’ve committed to play college ball (but can choose to go pro anyway): 12 Adams (Michigan State), 13 Petty (Texas Tech), 17 Neal (LSU), 18 Cijntije (Mississippi State) and 19 Noot (LSU), while the remaining one is a JUCO-1: 15 Norman. Maybe we’ll get one of the LSU guys to sign. Last year, we drafted two high schoolers who’d committed to Arizona State, one of which signed (Caden Vire).
  11. If I assume a fixed draft date (e.g. July 18th every year) for comparison purposes, then 3rd round selection SS Dylan O'Rae (18.42 years) is Stearns' youngest pick in the first 10 rounds since C Darrien Miller (18.35) in 2019, though still far off his overall youngest selection (Mario Feliciano in 2016 - 17.66). At the other end of the spectrum, 7th round pick 3B Ben Metzinger (23.06 years) is the oldest player taken in the first 10 rounds of Stearns' tenure since Dallas Carroll (Stearns' oldest pick ever - 23.17) in 2017.
  12. As I got on a domestic flight, I noted Nashville was trailing 8-1 against Memphis in the 6th inning, while Wisconsin was leading West Michigan 3-1 late in their game. Being something of a pessimist generally, I wasn’t surprised to discover later that the Timber Rattlers had lost that game but was stunned to see that the Sounds mounted a massive comeback to snatch a victory. Tyler White knocked in Nashville’s first and last runs via homers in the 3rd and 8th innings, while Weston Wilson and Brian Navaretto also homered in the come-from-behind win which salvaged a 4-2 series loss for the Sounds. As for Wisconsin, they led 3-1 for most of the game after some fine pitching by James Meeker and Christian Tripp, coupled with a Tristan Peters two-run shot, but coughed up two runs in the 8th inning and a one-run lead in the 10th inning to drop their contest at West Michigan 5-4, resulting in a miserable 5-1 series loss. Biloxi put together a solid game all-around, with TJ Shook and relievers limiting Tennessee to one run on three hits, while Cam Devanney hit two home runs and was joined by Andruw Monasterio and Sal Frelick (who went 4-for-5) in the dinger club. They won 7-1, grabbing the finale in a 4-2 series loss on the week. Carolina needed a win to be the organization’s sole series winner this week, but couldn’t keep up with Delmarva in a 10-4 loss, giving them a 3-3 series split. Jesus Chirinos and Hedbert Perez each homered, as the Mudcats had managed to keep it close until the 8th inning. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned White, Frelick, Monasterio, Navaretto and Devanney, with apologies to Peters, Meeker and Wilson, along with a tip of the cap to the Biloxi bullpen (six shutout innings in their win). However, Carolina battled back in the 2nd inning with a 1B Jesus Chirinos (2-for-4, HR, RBI) home run and an RBI single from Jheremy Vargas (1-for-3, walk, RBI) to knot the affair 2-2. In the 3rd inning, three Delmarva hits and the Mudcats’ second error of the game allowed the Shorebirds to take a 5-2 lead, which OF Hedbert Perez (1-for-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) sliced into with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning, his 11th dinger of 2022. Perez started in center field for the second straight game, with OF Jackson Chourio away to play in the Futures Game. RHP Miguel Segura (3 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 5 BB, 4 Ks) entered in relief in the 6th inning, conceding a run in the 7th inning on two walks and a single for a 6-4 deficit. A C Jeferson Quero (3-for-5, 2 doubles) single and Perez walk unfortunately produced no runs in the bottom half of the frame, before Delmarva blew open the game with a four-run 8th inning. At least RHP Miguel Guerrero (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks) pitched a clean final inning. Next week’s outlook: 43-44 Carolina will host 45-41 Down East starting Friday. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: West Michigan 5, Wisconsin 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: West Michigan Walks Off Wisconsin in Ten Innings OF Tristan Peters (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) homered on the first pitch he saw in the 1st inning, bringing home Joe Gray Jr. (who’d singled; 2-for-4, walk, RBI, SB) for the early 2-0 lead. RHP James Meeker (4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 3 Ks) made his 2nd start of 2022 in his 24th appearance, giving up just an RBI double in the 2nd inning as West Michigan kept the game close. 2B Jose Acosta (2-for-4, triple, walk) tripled and scored on a Gray single in the 3rd inning for a 3-1 lead, but the offense squandered most chances from that point onward. Leadoff hit-by-pitches in the 4th and 8th innings, a double and two walks in the 5th inning, a 6th inning single and a single and walk in the 9th inning all resulted in zero runs, giving the Whitecaps ample time to send the game to extra innings. RHP Christian Tripp (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) ably covered the 5th and 6th innings before RHP Robbie Baker also pitched a clean 7th inning. However, Baker ran into trouble in the 8th inning, giving up two singles and a walk, with Manager Joe Ayrault calling on RHP Taylor Floyd to try to escape the two-on, one-out jam in a 3-2 game. Unfortunately, a single tied the game 3-3 before Floyd induced an inning-ending ground ball double play. After the Timber Rattlers failed to score with two-on and one-out in the top of the 9th inning, West Michigan got an infield single to lead off the bottom of the 9th inning. Thankfully, Floyd deftly escaped that jam through a sacrifice bunt and two ground outs. In the 10th inning, Wisconsin regained the lead 4-3 thanks to a Peters single and 1B Wes Clarke sacrifice fly, but the team needed more. Sent out for his 3rd inning of work, Floyd conceded a walk and then a two-run double as West Michigan walked it off 5-4. We should credit the Whitecaps’ defense, as they converted three ground ball double plays, picked off a runner and threw out another Timber Rattler stealing giving them five extra outs in their tight win. Next week’s outlook: 48-38 Wisconsin will return to action on Friday, hosting 39-47 Beloit. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 7, Tennessee 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Blasts Four Homers In 7-1 Sunday Win Hitting home runs early and often is a great recipe for victory, which Biloxi enjoyed on Sunday. Although starting RHP TJ Shook (3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 5 BB, 2 HBPs, 2 Ks) struggled a bit for form (three walks and a two hit-by-pitches in the first two innings), he managed to keep it scoreless, enabling the Shuckers to grab a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning on an Andruw Monasterio (2-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs) 2-run shot and a Cam Devanney solo homer. Two more walks and an RBI single in the 3rd inning cut the deficit to 3-1, though Shook managed to complete that inning on a fly out and infield line out. But that was all for TJ after 67 pitches (34 strikes), as he handed it off to the bullpen early. By the 4th inning, OF Sal Frelick (4-for-5, HR, RBI) had already collected his third single, though the game remained tight at 3-1. JT Hintzen pitched a scoreless 4th inning, before 3B Cam Devanney (2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBIs) hit a two-run blast in the 5th inning for a 5-1 advantage. The Biloxi bullpen show continued with RHPs Kent Hasler, Nash Walters, Zach Vennaro and Robbie Hitt each completing at least one scoreless inning. Vennaro earned his fourth win of the year for his effort, stranding two inherited runners and retiring all four hitters he faced, including three by strikeout. Frelick wasn’t content with just a 3-for-3 day, hitting the first pitch he saw in the 7th inning over the wall in right center field for his 3rd homer of 2022. An RBI double from 1B Thomas Dillard in the 9th inning concluded the scoring at 7-1. Strangely RHP Cam Robinson entered to pitch the 9th inning, but was immediately pulled in favor of Hitt, not registering a pitch in the contest. Let’s hope that Robinson feels better after a few scheduled rest days. Next week’s outlook: 40-45 Biloxi will host a difficult Pensacola (44-38) side as of Friday. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Memphis 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Tyler White Leads Sounds to Dramatic Comeback Despite some humbling losses this week and daunting deficits of 5-0 (3rd inning) and 8-1 (6th inning), the Sounds gave 6,739 loyal home fans an epic comeback victory to remember, scoring the final nine runs of the game in this 10-8 thriller. Unfortunately, reliable starting RHP Caleb Boushley was hit hard, giving up five runs on six hits in the third inning. That’s more runs in one inning than the Hortonville-native has yielded in any game this season, to give you a sense of how solid he’s been this year. 1B Tyler White (2-for-4, 2 HR, walk, 4 RBIs) grabbed a run back in the bottom of the 3rd inning, hitting his 12th homer of 2022 on an 0-2 pitch for a 5-1 deficit. Memphis grabbed a 6th run on a homer off RHP Hobie Harris in the 5th inning, then consecutive 6th inning home runs off rehabbing RHP Miguel Sanchez for a sizeable 8-1 advantage. In the bottom of the 6th inning, OF/C Jakson Reetz got the comeback started with a single, before 3B Weston Wilson (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) smacked a two-out, two-run shot. OF Garrett Whitley then walked and C Brian Navaretto (3-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) hit another two-run, two-out home run to excite the home crowd as the game tightened at 8-5. Consecutive leadoff walks issued by RHP Peter Strzelecki in the 7th inning thankfully produced nothing for Memphis (strike out, fly ball double play to Whitley who caught a runner off first base). DH/OF Tyrone Taylor (3-for-4, SB) then continued the comeback with a leadoff 7th inning single, followed by a White walk. Taylor scored on a 2B Mark Mathias RBI double and White came home on a ground ball out, as the Sounds inched closer at 8-7. RHP Alec Bettinger came in for his first appearance since July 3rd, retiring all three hitters he faced in the 8th inning (two line outs, one fly out). Nashville then put two aboard in the bottom half of the inning, setting the stage for White’s three-run homer to give them their first lead of the game at 10-8. The beautiful golf shot (from one knee!) was on an 0-2 count with two outs. RHP Trevor Kelley pitched a three-up, three-down 9th inning to earn the save, while Bettinger was credited with the win. 13. The Sounds scored nine unanswered runs in an epic 10-8 comeback win. Biloxi smacked four homers in a comfortable victory. Wisconsin gave up two late leads in a tough defeat. The Mudcats were hit hard in a lopsided loss. 14. I thought we’d trade him rather than sacrificing his last player option. But I’m trying to be optimistic that this demotion to AAA and burning of his last player option will essentially force us to keep him around until the end of the 2022 season. Who knows, maybe he’ll pull a Ryon Healy and bat clean-up in a playoff elimination game.
  15. Carolina was cruising 5-2 before conceding four runs in the 7th inning, then pulled out a 7-6 win against Delmarva anyway thanks to Junior Montero (three scoreless innings), Oswal Leones (3-run homer, walk-off sacrifice fly) and Jackson Chourio (3-for-5, scored game-winner). Wisconsin was tied 4-4 in the 3rd inning and 7-7 in the 7th inning, but couldn’t muster another run in a 10-inning 8-7 loss at West Michigan. Tristan Peters reached base four times and knocked in three runs. Andruw Monasterio had a home run amongst his three hits, while Garrett Mitchell also produced three hits and two RBIs, but the squad left 10 men on base in a 7-3 loss at Tennessee. Josh Lindblom and the Sounds got rocked at home against Memphis, trailing 14-1 entering the 9th inning and ultimately losing 19-4 while giving up 23 hits. In short season action, both ACL clubs were victorious while DSL Brewers2 came back to run their record against DSL Brewers1 to 5-0 this year. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Leones, Peters, Montero, Mitchell and Chourio, with apologies to Monasterio. RHP Edwin Jimenez (6 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 WP, 6 Ks) had put together a solid outing through six innings, but gave up three singles and a home run to start the 7th inning, exiting with the game tied 5-5 and the game-leading run on base with nobody out. Delmarva grabbed the lead 6-5 that same inning, aided in part by a Jeferson Quero error. Quero’s frustration then boiled over with a pop out in the bottom half of the inning, so the umpires sent him home early. In the injury-watch department, OF Hendry Mendez exited to start the 5th inning, although he hadn’t batted or seen a ball in the outfield for several innings. With OF Hedbert Perez injured in Wednesday’s game, this forced INF Jean Carmona into outfield duty. Will these unfortunate injuries open the door for someone from Arizona (Eduarqui? Jace? Luis?) to come up? Nevertheless, RHP Junior Montero (3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) kept his squad in the game, facing 10 batters over three scoreless innings of superb work, not giving up a single hit and ultimately earning the win for his efforts. Veteran C Jose Sibrian started the comeback by drawing a full-count walk with one out in the 9th inning, moving to third on a Chourio single and scoring on a fielder’s choice which got nobody out. Chourio then moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Leones’ game-ending shallow sacrifice fly which saw the Shorebirds’ third baseman trip over the warm-up pitchers’ mound in foul territory. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: West Michigan 8, Wisconsin 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Whitecaps Top Rattlers in Ten Innings A 4-run 3rd inning on three singles (including DH Wes Clarke ’s 2-run single) and three walks gave Wisconsin its first lead at 4-2, but an error and Whitecap 2-run homer tied it back up at 4-4 in the same inning. LHP Russell Smith (5 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 4 BB, 1 WP, 3 Ks) didn’t have his best stuff but was positioned for a potential win when OF Tristan Peters (2-for-3, 2 walks, 3 RBIs) walked and scored on a sacrifice fly in the 6th inning for a 5-4 lead. However, RHP Christian Tripp gave that lead right back in a 3-run bottom half of the inning before Peters came through again with a 2-run single to knot the game at 7-7 in the 7th inning, scoring 2B Jose Acosta (2-for-4, double, walk) and OF Arbert Cipion (1-for-3, walk, SB). Similar to Montero’s effort for Carolina, RHP Brady Schanuel (3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 K; dropping his season ERA to 5.00) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief here to give the Timber Rattler offense a chance, but they collected no hits in the 8th or 9th innings, then blew their chance in the 10th inning. Peters singled yet again to lead off the 10th inning, giving the team first-and-third with nobody out. However, West Michigan escaped with a strikeout and 3B Zavier Warren ’s ground ball double play. Although Warren did manage a sacrifice fly earlier in the game, it’s time to admit that he’s having a miserable season thus far (.197 season AVG, .578 season OPS; 0-for-4 in this game). RHP Tyler Gillies got the chance to pitch the pressure-packed 10th inning, but didn’t retire a batter: walk, hit-by-pitch, walk-off single. C Darrien Miller went 0-for-5 in the game, but did manage to throw out both attempted base stealers which is important progress for him defensively. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Tennessee 7, Biloxi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Mitchell & Monasterio Each With Three Hits In Shuckers 7-3 Loss The Shuckers just can’t seem to put a complete game together these days, with one component always letting them down. In this game, it was the lack of a clutch hitting, stranding 10 men while Tennessee only stranded five. SS Andruw Monasterio (3-for-5, HR, double, 1 RBI) doubled and scored on a Garrett Mitchell (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) single to give Biloxi a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. LHP Brandon Knarr (5 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks) escaped a 2-on, nobody out 2nd inning, then got an assist from Mitchell to end the 3rd inning. However, after a 2B Felix Valerio double went for naught in the 4th inning, the Smokies smacked two homers in the bottom half of the inning (by Cubs’ #24 and #18 prospects Chase Strump (15th of season) and Alexander Canario (21st of season) for a 2-1 advantage. Monasterio’s fifth AA homer (in just 15 games) tied the game back up at 2-2 in the 5th inning, but Tennessee responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame. RHP Kent Hasler came on in relief in the 6th inning, giving up a run despite not yielding a hit (walk, stolen base, error, sacrifice fly) for a 5-2 deficit. A Joey Wiemer (2-for-4) walk, Monasterio single and Mitchell RBI double put Biloxi in excellent position in the 7th inning, down 5-3 with runners at 2nd and 3rd base and one out, but Smokies’ reliever Jeremiah Estrada came in to extinguish the threat (strikeout, ground out). RHP Cam Robinson then gave up his first runs, hits and walks in AA, allowing two runs in the 7th inning for a 7-3 deficit, though he did escape a 2-on, nobody out situation in the 8th inning via a strikeout and fly out double play (Mitchell’s second assist of the game). Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Memphis 19, Nashville 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Redbirds Thump Sounds at First Horizon Park Veteran RHP Josh Lindblom was tagged for eight earned runs in just two innings of work, ballooning his season ERA to 4.74. The game was fully out-of-hand at 14-1 when 3B Tyler White (45.00 season ERA) went to the mound to throw the 9th inning, giving up another five runs on seven hits to remind us that pitching is very hard. Leading 19-1, the stingy Redbirds didn’t return the position-player-pitching favor, instead sending out RHP Jacob Bosiokovic for the 9th inning, who exited due to injury after giving up a triple to SS Pablo Reyes (2-for-4, triple, walk). Memphis then called on yet another pitcher, who was tagged by homers from 2B Mark Mathias (7th of the year) and 1B Jon Singleton (14th of the year) to give the final 19-4 scoreline. ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Brewers Blue 14, ACL Guardians 4 (final after 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The come-from-behind victory boosts Blue’s record to 11-17. Yes, they actually trailed 4-1 entering the penultimate inning, putting across eight runs in the 6th inning and five runs in the 7th inning. RHP Jesus Rivero had his best outing, covering two scoreless innings to end the game, dropping his season ERA to 12.00 (gulp). After his teammates produced four runs to knot the game at 4-4 in the 6th inning, OF Jace Avina (2-for-4, HR, double, walk, 4 RBIs) had the game’s biggest hit, hitting a 2-out, 3-run blast (his fifth homer of the year) for a 7-4 lead. This was a nice offensive outburst for the Blue Men: 1B Quinton Low (3-for-5, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs), Reidy Mercado (2-for-4, walk, SB), Jhonnys Cabrera (2-for-3, walk, RBI). Final: ACL Brewers Gold 3, ACL Cubs 0 (final after 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log If excellent pitching is more your style, the Golden Boys fit the bill on Thursday, as Gold evened up their season record at 14-14. 19-year old RHP Gerson Calzadilla (6 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks) was rarely troubled as he threw his second straight 5+ inning game with zero earned runs, dropping his season ERA to 2.77 ERA in 26 innings. 21-year old RHP Raul Mendoza capped off the shutout by retiring the final two batters of the game to earn his first save in the Brewers’ system. Most of the offense came in the 1st inning, although rehabbing 3B Alberis Ferrer (1-for-3, double, walk) was the only player to hit the ball out of the infield. Jadher Areinamo played shortstop in this contest, getting on base three times (1-for-2, 2 walks, SB), while OF Luis Castillo (1-for-3, walk) and 2B Gregory Barrios (1-for-2, walk, 2 RBIs) each reached base twice. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Brewers2 3, DSL Brewers1 1 (final in 6 innings) Box Score / Game Log Here’s your DSL game summary from my colleague @JosephZarr (thanks!): 20yo Dominican RHP Jeral Vizcaino grabs the DSL Brewers 2 victory going 4 complete innings of no hit, 1 walk, 5 strikeout ball. He came aboard in the 3rd inning with the Brewers 2 trailing 1-0 and proceeded to close the game in shutdown fashion. Vizcaino moves to 2-1 on the year in 18 innings pitched over eight outings (1 Start). After today's outing, his numbers are becoming increasingly impressive: 21k:8bb, 0.145 BAA, 0.94 WHIP, 3.00 ERA. On the other side of the diamond, and pitching wonderfully for the DSL Brewers 1, 17 yo 6'3" Dominican Lefty Wande Torres gets the no decision - a chance at victory ended when fellow Domincan RHP Gregory Baez surrendered 3 runs in his inning of work; walking two to start and throwing a wild pitch for good measure. Whereas Baez has scuffled over his 7 plus innings of relief work to date, Torres remains upward trending and another arm to watch - 17 years old, lefty, decent k:bb ratio (23:11), hitters only batting 0.182, a respectable 1.25 WHIP, and now a sub-4 era at 3.93 after five complete shut out innings today (2 hits, 2 walks, 3 k's) . The game appears to have been ended early (?): after the Brewers 2 plated 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth the Brewers 1 were never given a chance to answer back in the top-half of the seventh. All three runs came via a Juan Baez (playing 3B today) single hit to short (after the runners had advanced to 2nd and 3rd via the aforementioned Baez wild pitch). Yeison Perez (1B and RF today) then hit a sacrifice fly. And, the game was over or called - it's hard to tell. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Friday, teams! 17. I missed the fact that 19-year old RHP Jeison Pena made his Low-A debut on Saturday. After an amazing 27K / 4 BB / 2 HBP compilation in 16 2/3 ACL innings this year, he went out and walked 4 batters and hit 2 players in his first ever Low-A game. Nerves!!! But never fear, he also struck out 7 hitters in 3 innings of work, while only yielding 1 run. Pena is the youngest pitcher on the Mudcats (7 months younger than RHP Miguel Segura), so he's definitely worth keeping a watchful eye on.
  18. Late leads were given up by Carolina (5-3 loss), Biloxi (7-6 loss in continuation of Saturday’s game) and Nashville (5-3 loss), while Wisconsin was one-hit in its series finale and the Shuckers couldn’t come back from an early deficit in their Sunday contest. The Mudcats’ Alexander Cornielle was the man of the day, cruising through six shutout innings of three-hit, zero-walk baseball, with five strikeouts. However, Kannapolis responded with five runs in the 8th inning to snatch a 5-3 win, dropping Carolina to its fifth straight defeat. The Timber Rattlers fell behind South Bend 4-0 early, which felt like a mountain of a deficit while being one-hit on the day, ultimately losing 6-2 and splitting their series 3-3. Biloxi entered the day expecting to grab two wins and a series victory, but instead imploded with a 6-4 lead and two outs in the 10th inning, dropping the concluding portion of Saturday’s game 7-6. Then they fell behind 4-0 in the follow-up game, losing 4-2 in Montgomery in spite of 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball from the bullpen. Nashville entered their Sunday riding an eight-game winning streak and grabbed a 3-2 lead in the middle innings, but were undone by a Columbus three-run blast in the 7th inning and a lack of further offense. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Cornielle, as well as Caleb Boushley, Mario Feliciano, Hedbert Perez and Kent Hasler. Transactions: N/A Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 5, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mudcats Lose Late Lead While Dropping Fifth Straight RHP Alexander Cornielle put the team in excellent position to snap a four-game losing streak in Kannapolis, throwing 87 pitches (60 strikes) over six shutout innings. Cornielle conceded just singles and no walks, striking out five Cannon Ballers, but exited with the game still tied 0-0, as opposing starter Jared Kelley was equal to the task (5 innings, 0 runs, 2 hits, 0 walks). The Mudcat offense finally awoke in the 7th inning, getting three runs on four hits, including Jackson Chourio’s 18th double of the year, a Hedbert Perez two-run double and an Oswal Leones RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Perez went 2-for-4 in the game to raise his season OPS to .652. Long inning reliever RHP Fernando Olguin had comfortably covered 2 2/3 scoreless innings (no runner reaching second base) before everything fell apart with two outs in the 8th inning: single, single, RBI single, run-scoring double. RHP Miguel Guerrero then entered the game to try to finish things off, but instead gave up a three-run homer to give Kannapolis a 5-3 lead, from which Carolina could not recover. Of course, most of those runs were charged to Olguin, who took the loss and saw his season ERA balloon to 5.30. Next week’s outlook: 40-41 Carolina returns home to face 26-54 Delmarva. Expect RHP Miguel Segura (4.11 season ERA) to start the first game of the series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend (Cubs) 6, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Cubs Hold Rattlers to One Hit; Gain Split in Series RHP Justin Jarvis (5 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks) came into the game in dominating form, but gave up a first-pitch, 1st-inning home run in this game and he and the team unfortunately never recovered. The Cubs added a second homer in that same 1st inning for a 2-0 advantage. Jarvis failed to help himself in the 3rd inning by fielding a grounder and throwing late to second base, putting the team in a two-on, nobody out situation. Both Cubs would score for a 4-0 lead. By the time Wisconsin got its first base runner in the 4th inning, they’d already seen center fielder Tyler Black exit the game early after making a catch to end the 3rd inning. Joe Gray Jr. grabbed the team’s only hit in that 4th inning, a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 4-2. That was Gray’s 12th homer of 2022. Other than Gray's homer, the principal other Timber Rattler highlight probably occurred in pre-game, when 1B Wes Clarke was announced as part of the opening line-up, his first action in about two weeks. You can’t really expect to score if you can’t get a hit. One Rattler reached base via error in the 5th inning, then the first two Wisconsin batters of the 7th inning reached base via hit-by-pitch, but no runs came around. In the bullpen, Robbie Baker (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) covered a clean 6th inning, but LHP Justin King ran into trouble by walking and hitting batters in the 7th inning, both of whom scored off RHP Taylor Floyd (nobody out on another fielder’s choice; RBI single). As noted in the linked game summary, King exited due to an undisclosed injury. Floyd (1 2/3 innings, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) threw well, however, so that’s a nice takeaway. Next week’s outlook: 47-33 Wisconsin stays on the road, travelling to face 42-39 West Michigan. Expect LHP Antoine Kelly (3.76 season ERA) to start the first game, attempting to recapture his early season form and earn a promotion. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery (Rays) 7, Biloxi 6 (conclusion of Saturday’s game) Box Score / Game Log Final: Montgomery 4, Biloxi 2 (Sunday’s game) Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: First Inning Runs Hold Up As Biscuits Top Shuckers In Finale In the denouement of Saturday’s postponed extra inning contest, Biloxi failed to do further damage with two-on and two-out in the 10th inning, but still led 6-4 as RHP Zach Vennaro came in for the attempted save. Two quick ground outs brought home Manfred’s ghost to bring the score to 6-5, before everything went awry starting with an infield single. Another base hit and then a full count walk loaded the bases for Montgomery before a visit to the mound. Shake it off. Make them beat you. Five-pitch walk to tie the game 6-6. Then a hit batsman on a 1-0 pitch to end it. The Shuckers lost 7-6 and had another nine innings to think about it. Still bruised from that setback, Biloxi starting RHP Victor Castaneda gave up a first batter home run in the next game, one of nine batters to come up against Castaneda that inning. Down 3-0 with two outs, an infield error on Victor’s 41st pitch of the inning brought home a fourth Montgomery run and sent Castaneda to the showers (2/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 1 K). He’s unfortunately struggled in his appearances since returning from an injury in mid-June. But hey, let’s hear it for the Shuckers’ bullpen: 7 1/3 scoreless innings pitched, four hits, one walk, nine strikeouts! The combination of Nash Walters (2 1/3 innings), Harold Chirino (2 innings), Cam Robinson (1 inning) and Kent Hasler (2 innings, 4 strikeouts) were terrific. Biloxi’s first hit came via a Sal Frelick 3rd inning single, which yielded nothing. A leadoff 4th inning double by Andruw Monasterio and single by Jakson Reetz (1-for-3, HBP) put the team in shape to claw into that Biscuit lead, but they only managed a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 deficit. Ground ball double plays ended both the 4th inning and 5th inning for the Shuckers. Frelick went 2-for-4 and raised his season OPS to .779. The next Biloxi threat came in the 8th inning, with a one-out infield hit by Noah Campbell (2-for-3; season OPS .792), Jason Lopez walk and then Frelick RBI single. Unfortunately, the Biscuits’ defense came through again, however, as Lopez was gunned down at third base for a deflating second out. Of course, Joey Wiemer followed with a single (a welcome sight given his ongoing rough patch) which could have really amped up the pressure but instead scored nobody, before Monasterio struck out to end the inning, Shuckers still trailing 4-2. Next week’s outlook: 38-41 Biloxi remains on the road this week, facing the 42-39 Tennessee Smokies. Expect RHP TJ Shook (5.40 ERA at AA level) to start the opener. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Columbus 5, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Win Streak Snapped in Series Finale Nashville came out on the wrong end of a quality, back-and-forth contest against a solid Columbus team which was not going to roll over when facing a potential 6-0 sweep for the week. Playing without a few studs (Abraham Almonte, Pablo Reyes), the Sounds still had a formidable lineup, as David Dahl doubled to start the 2nd inning, then scored on a Mario Feliciano single for a 1-0 lead. Feliciano went 3-for-4 in the game to raise his season average to .303 and season OPS to .744. Unfortunately, the Clippers answered in the bottom half of the inning on a walk and Bo Naylor home run, as starting RHP Caleb Boushley got himself into serious trouble. Down 2-1 with nobody out, Boushley also gave up a double and hit a batter before Columbus gifted Nashville with a sacrifice bunt for the first out. Boushley then walked a batter on four pitches to get the force out back into effect and induced a double play grounder to escape still down only 2-1. After Boushley escaped a two-on, two-out situation in the 3rd inning, Nashville grabbed the lead back in the 5th inning. Feliciano led off the frame with a single, followed up by a one-out single from Patrick Dorrian. With two outs, Brice Turang was unfazed by an 0-2 count, pulling a two-run double to right field for a 3-2 lead. Dorrian went 1-for-2 with a walk. RHP Hobie Harris then struck out the side in the 6th inning, before things unfortunately went sideways in the 7th inning. After failing to score despite a single and two walks in the top of the frame (unhelped by Weston Wilson being picked off base after reaching on a fielder’s choice force out), the Clippers tagged RHP Lucas Erceg with a double, single and three-run homer before he collected his first out. RHP Matt Hardy ultimately entered to retire the final batter, which was the only batter he faced. RHP Trevor Kelley, who’s been see-sawing between AAA and the Brewers, pitched a clean 8th inning, garnering two strikeouts. Down 5-3, no Sounds reached base in the 8th or 9th innings, but they can still take satisfaction from a 5-1 series win. Next week’s outlook: The 52-31 Sounds will host Memphis this week, with RHP Dylan File (4.37 ERA) expected to start Game One. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. 20. The Sounds grabbed an early lead to extend the winning streak to six games. Four Biloxi hurlers combined on a 2-0 shutout. Wisconsin gave up a grand slam to end a tough loss. Jackson Chourio’s homer wasn’t enough in the Mudcats’ loss. Outfielder Garrett Mitchell started his rehab with BRB Blue. David Dahl smacked not one but two home runs in the first three innings(!) of the Sounds’ 6-2 victory over Columbus, jumping out to a 3-0 series lead. LHP Ethan Small was stellar (save for four walks), giving up just two hits while striking out eight Clippers over five innings. LHP Nick Bennett had his best game of 2022, striking out nine Biscuits over six scoreless innings to break Biloxi’s six-game losing skid in impressive fashion. While Biloxi’s relievers got the job done in Montgomery, RHP Taylor Floyd’s Form Rediscovery Tour got off to a rocky start for Wisconsin, as he was tagged by a game-ending walk-off grand slam to lose 8-6 to the South Bend Cubs. Yes, those darned stinking Cubs. The loss was made worse by a scary play involving catcher Darrien Miller. Jackson Chourio’s three-run blast gave Carolina an early lead, but it wasn’t enough offense as the team fell 5-3 to the Cannon Ballers. In short season action, ACL Gold and DSL-1 grabbed victories (RHP Gerson Calzadilla five IP with zero earned runs; C Edgardo Ordonez grand slam), while DSL-2’s game was suspended in the 4th inning due to weather. Thursday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Bennett, Dahl, Small and Chourio, as well as James Meeker. Transactions: OF Garrett Mitchell assigned to ACL Brewers Blue for rehab assignment Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Kannapolis 5, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Chourio Homers Again in 5-3 Carolina Loss RHP Stiven Cruz gave up a 2-run blast to White Sox 19-year old prospect Wilfred Veras (13th of the year) in the 1st inning, before appearing to settle in. As seems to happen too often for comfort, Chourio notched Carolina’s sole extra-base hit in this game, a three-run homer (his 11th of the year) in the third inning to give the team a 3-2 lead over Kannapolis. After Cruz escaped a bases loaded, nobody out situation in the 4th inning (thank you RF Hendry Mendez for that fly out double play rifle home), the Cannon Ballers collected the game-tying run with two hits in the 5th inning, then went triple-homer in the 6th inning for a 5-3 lead. Cruz did manage to strike out seven batters over his six innings of work, but the five runs on nine hits obviously leave room for better days. The Mudcats collected zero hits in the final four innings of the game and also hit into four ground ball double plays in the game. Each team had two errors, but they didn’t result in any unearned runs. RHPs Junior Montero (3.18 ERA) and Michele Vassalotti (2.04 ERA) were terrific as usual, each throwing a shutout inning of relief, with Montero striking out the side. 20-year-old 1B Jesus Chirinos has not been having the season he anticipated (.558 season OPS), but let’s give him credit for a single, walk and run scored in his 1-for-2 effort. 3B Jean Carmona and Mendez each went 1-for-3, with Mendez also collecting a walk. Friday’s outlook: RHP Edwin Jimenez (4.18 season ERA) will get the start, as the Mudcats need a victory in Kannapolis to tie this week’s series 2-2. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend 8, Wisconsin 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: South Bend Walkoff Slam Beats Wisconsin Except for the scary play involving catcher Darrien Miller , I’m sure this was a fun game for any Timber Rattlers fans who left early, as well as the Cubs’ fans who stayed until the end. Wisconsin grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on OF Tristan Peters’ 1st inning triple, in which he also scored on an error. However, LHP Antoine Kelly had his second straight difficult outing, throwing 75 pitches while covering only three innings, yielding one walk and one run in each. Kelly’s final line: 3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks. With the game still 3-2 in favor of South Bend, Wisconsin missed a big chance by failing to score with the bases loaded and one out in the 5th inning. However, RHP James Meeker was exceptional in throwing three scoreless middle innings, thus giving the Timber Rattlers more chances. Meeker’s line: 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks. Three 6th inning Wisconsin hits gave them back the lead, the last a two-run double by OF Arbert Cipion (2-for-4 in the game). That lead was extended in the 7th inning on OF Joe Gray Jr .’s 11th home run of 2022, bringing home Miller who reached base in all four of his at-bats (1-for-1, BB, 2 HBPs). Gray went 2-for-5 in the contest. But wait, if Cam Robinson was promoted to AA and Meeker is throwing long relief, who’s closing games for the Timber Rattlers? Well, RHP Robbie Baker yielded a run on two 7th inning hits to tighten up the contest at 6-4. He then evaded damage in the 8th inning despite a leadoff walk and single, thanks in large part to Gray gunning down the lead runner at 3rd base. And this was the inning where catcher Miller was down for several minutes after taking a foul ball flush against his face mask. He walked off, but will require close monitoring obviously. Alex Hall came in to finish the game for Miller. Fanatic Contributor and Colleague @Mass Haas posted more information on the Miller incident in the daily forum. In Taylor Floyd ’s first action in High-A since his promotion to AA Biloxi in mid-August 2021, he faced six batters, striking out none but did manage to induce a fly out and pop out. He conceded two walks despite leading the hitters 0-and-2 and 1-and-2, respectively. After striking out 84 of 227 hitters last year (37.0%), Floyd has just K’d 24 of 116 batters in 2022 (20.7%). The game-ending walk-off grand slam was on a 1-and-1 pitch pulled over the right field wall by Owen Caissie , a 6’4”, 20-year old outfield prospect. Friday’s outlook: Also trailing their series 1-2, LHP Russell Smith (5.03 season ERA) will strive for a repeat performance of his last start (6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 Ks). He faces off against formidable 21-year old LHP DJ Herz (1.99 ERA in 54 1/3 innings with a whopping 85 strikeouts) – Cubs’ #9 prospect on mlb.com. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 2, Montgomery 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Bennett Leads Charge In Shuckers' Shutout Win Over Montgomery Given the 2020 Covid season wipeout, sixth-round 2019 selection LHP Nick Bennett has been moved quickly up the minor league chain without ever really impressing at any full season club level (just 20 innings in Low-A 2019, ERAs over 4.00 in High-A and AA in 2021, ERA over 5.00 in AA this year), but THIS is the performance to start to build a serious career around: six scoreless innings of three-hit, one-walk, nine strikeout ball. Woo hoo!! An error and single put Bennett in a dangerous two-on, one-out first inning situation, which he evaded by getting two called strikeouts. Then he also worked around leadoff hits in the 2nd and 5th innings. However, Bennett’s fine outing was matched pitch-for-pitch by Rays’ 21-year old RHP prospect Taj Bradley (their #2 prospect on mlb.com), who threw seven six scoreless innings himself, only allowing two singles and zero walks, while striking out seven Biloxi hitters. The Shuckers did not collect their first hit until the 4th inning, a SS Andruw Monasterio (2-for-4) single. 1B Thomas Dillard (1-for-3, walk) grabbed their second hit with a leadoff single in the 5th inning, but neither hit resulted in any damage. With the game 0-0 and Bradley finally exiting, Biloxi did its damage with two outs in the 7th inning, getting a Dillard walk and Felix Valerio hit-by-pitch to set the stage for RBI singles by 3B Cam Devanney and Gabe Holt for a 2-0 lead. RHP Nash Walters retired all three Biscuits he faced in the 7th inning, striking out two hitters. RHPs Harold Chirino and Zach Vennaro then each worked out of difficult jams (two-on, one-out in the 8th inning; three-on, one-out in the 9th inning) to close out the shoutout with a ground ball double play. A Joey Wiemer highlight is of course required: Friday’s outlook: LHP Brandon Knarr (2.27 season ERA, but 3.81 at AA level) will get the start, with Biloxi also needing a victory to even up their series in Montgomery. He’s been solid over his last three games (17 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 8 BB, 17 Ks). Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 6, Columbus 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Dahl's Homers Extend Sounds Win Streak to Six OF David Dahl served notice that he’s ready for a return to the majors, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, hitting his 8th and 9th homers of 2022 to give Nashville a 4-1 lead by the 3rd inning. Brice Turang also had an RBI triple in the 3rd inning. On the mound, starting LHP Ethan Small pitched his third straight solid game, limiting a good Clippers squad to one run on two hits, while striking out eight. However, he was limited to five innings as he’s already reached 90 pitches, not helped by walking four batters. Small was assisted in the third inning by OF Weston Wilson throwing out a runner at third base to avoid a two-on, nobody out situation. RHP relievers Matt Hardy (1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) and Zack Brown (1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks) were solid in covering the 6th and 7th innings, while Nashville extended its lead to 6-1 on a 2B Pablo Reyes (2-for-4, double) RBI single and C Brian Navaretto coming home when Reyes was picked off base. Similar to the Biloxi game, RHPs Hobie Harris and Lucas Erceg both ran into difficulties in the 8th and 9th innings, with Harris yielding a run on three hits and a walk, while Erceg walked two and had a batter reach base on a wild pitch strikeout. Thankfully, all that Columbus effort only resulted in one run however, as each got a key strikeout and ground ball double play to escape potentially big innings. It was good to see 3B Patrick Dorrian (1-for-4) back in action after leaving Sunday’s game early, but unfortunately C Mario Feliciano hasn’t played since leaving Saturday’s game early. Friday’s outlook: RHP Josh Lindblom (3.96 season ERA) will start tonight to try to claim a 4-0 series lead over Columbus. ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Reds 7, ACL Brewers Blue 2 Box Score / Game Log The Blue team fell to 7-16 on the season, being outhit 13-8 despite OF Garrett Mitchell making an impressive rehab start. More from @Mass Haas: In his return to action after being out since exiting a Biloxi game with an oblique injury on May 13th, CF Garrett Mitchell had an eventful night with Arizona Blue. Mitchell was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat (great - thanks a lot, I'm sure), He was stranded at second base. He also flew out to center field to end the 3rd inning. In the top of the 4th, Mitchell earned an outfield assist when his throw to shortstop Daniel Guilarte led to an 8-6-2 putout at home plate. Mitchell lined an opposite-field double to left in the 5th (stranded again). He was replaced in the field to begin the 6th. The Blue team going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranding 12 baserunners isn’t pretty, but the Reds also left 15 men-on-base in this one. Starting RHP Jared Albir gave up consecutive first inning singles to start the game, but INF Jonatan Guzman threw out a baserunner at home to help escape. However, a double, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the 4th inning allowed the first run to score with LHP Junior Castillo then throwing a memorable one-third inning: two wild pitches (scoring one run), one walk, one player caught stealing home. Castillo then gave up four runs on six singles in the 5th inning, as the Reds blew open the scoreline. 18-year old SS Daniel Guilarte keeps emulating Turang: three singles in this game to raise his batting average to .347. He has 26 singles and 5 doubles on the season (zero triples or homers). 18-year old 2B Guzman also doubled and singled, but his season OPS is still hovering at .650. 20-year old OF Eduarqui Fernandez (1-for-4; .827 season OPS) hit his 8th double of the campaign, but also sports a 7 BB / 37 K ratio in 84 plate appearances). 24-year old Leoni De La Cruz probably had the best outing on the team: 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks. Final: ACL Brewers Gold 7, ACL Athletics 1 (final after 7 innings) Box Score / Game Log The win boosts the Gold squad to 12-11 on the season, with terrific pitching by 19-year old starting RHP Gerson Calzadilla: 5 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks (to drop his season ERA to 3.66) and 20-year old RHP Phili Silverio (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K). Gold was victorious despite going 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position. INF Jadher Areinamo had the pleasure of playing shortstop in this game, contributing offensively as usual: triple, single to raise his season slash in the ACL to .318 AVG / .396 OBP / .459 SLG. Catcher Blayberg Diaz (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) played DH in this game, collecting his second home run of 2022. Stud 18-year old OF Luis Castillo didn’t collect any hits (0-for-4), but still garnered 2 RBIs and only struck out once. C Nader Garcia smacked a double in the 2nd inning, but promptly exited for a substitute so we’ll have to track Garcia’s return-to-play in the days ahead. Replacement C Jason Ollarve also collected two RBIs despite going 0-for-3 in the game. Rough night for catchers: Maryvale Blue catcher Jhonnys Cabrera was pulled mid-inning in the 6th. Maryvale Gold catcher Nader Garcia exited immediately upon hitting a double to left field in the 2nd inning. DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE Final: DSL Brewers1 4, DSL Rockies 2 (final in 5 innings) Box Score / Game Log The win improves DSL Brewers1’s record to 9-13, as it appears they were able to complete the 5th inning just in time. After CF Luis Lara's single, an error and a walk, C Edgardo Ordonez (.895 season OPS) blasted a 1st inning grand slam for his second home run of 2022 and a 4-0 lead. 17-year old Lara (2-for-3; 1.027 season OPS) doubled in the 2nd inning as he builds his resume for a promotion to the ACL. RHP Leonardo Rivera pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one. Suspended to Future Date: DSL Brewers2 12, DSL Tigers 5 (2-on, 2-out in bottom of 4th inning) Box Score / Game Log There were runs scored in each of the half-innings played, though the Brewers2 squad has maintained its lead throughout the initial innings. Quoting my colleagues, who along with me are somewhat enthusiastic about the performance being put in by 1B Yeison Perez before and after his injury: @Joseph Zarr It would appear 18-year-old left-handed hitting first baseman Perez is doing just fine. Just fine and dandy. Playing 1B today, he is currently 2-for-3 with his 2nd triple and four more RBIs (19 now on his season). In now 49 AB's he has bumped his BA to .417 and his OPS to 1.441. @Mass Haas It's insane. Perez was slugging .956 PRIOR to this suspended game in which he singled and tripled! (Just slugging!). He has 13 XBH's among his 20 hits, including six home runs. 2B Demetrio Nadal (3-for-3), RF Irving Igualas (2-for-3) and DH/C Edwin Tamoy (2-for-3) also enjoyed their 4 innings of work. It must be so much fun to put up 9 runs and 11 hits in less than half a game ?. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck on Friday, teams! 24. Amazing relief performances helped Carolina, Wisconsin and Nashville to wins, while four Biloxi home runs weren’t enough to complete its comeback. The top reliever in the minor leagues announced his promotion to AA Biloxi after the game, while all eight minor league squads will be in action today, the 4th of July. In a repeat of Saturday’s results, Carolina, Wisconsin and Nashville were all winners, with Biloxi unfortunately dropping its game. The bullpens combined for 15 scoreless innings in the three victories, with Biloxi also getting three scoreless relief innings before yielding a few runs in the 9th inning. The outcomes gave Carolina and Wisconsin highly-impressive 5-1 series wins over Fayetteville and Cedar Rapids, respectively, while Nashville won its series 4-2 over Indianapolis and Biloxi fell to 2-4 against Mississippi. The Timber Rattlers and Mudcat games were particular nail-biters, as Carolina battled back from a 3-0 deficit to extend the game to extra innings and win 4-3 on a 10th inning Zach Raabe single; and the Wisconsin game was tied at 4-4 for five innings before a Tyler Black RBI single. Scoreless two-inning relief appearances are nothing new to Cam Robinson, but this time he earned the victory instead of the save. Mr. Robinson was subsequently promoted, so he’s probably on a bus or plane to Montgomery, Alabama as we read and write. Jakson Reetz’ Southern League leading 18th and 19th homers of the season weren’t enough for Biloxi, which fell behind 5-2 and 8-3, ultimately losing 8-5. Nashville’s pitchers had to step into the batter’s box three times in this game, but the squad came out with a 7-4 win anyway. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Reetz and Robinson, along with Carlos F. Rodriguez, David Dahl and Jeferson Quero, with apologies to Brady Schanuel, Jon Singleton, Brannon Jordan and Michele Vassalotti. Transactions: RHP Cam Robinson promoted from High-A Wisconsin to AA Biloxi RHP Miguel Guerrero assigned to Low-A Carolina from High-A Wisconsin Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 4, Fayetteville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Raabe Rips Walk-Off Single in 4-3 Victory in Extras AUDIO: Post-Game Interview with Manager Victor Estevez In spite of a rare rough start for RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (first four batters of the game reached, scoring two runs), giving up an unearned run in the 5th inning and being one-hit through first five innings, the Mudcats were never far out of this game. DH/C Jeferson Quero started the comeback with a solo homer (sixth of the year) in the 6th inning, before OF Jackson Chourio doubled and scored on a Jean Carmona sacrifice fly in the same frame to cut the deficit to 3-2. RHP Brannon Jordan had one of best relief outings, throwing three scoreless innings (6th through the 8th) while yielding only two hits, no walks and striking out three Woodpeckers. Jordan’s effort thus gave Carolina ample time to grab that third and tying run, which they did via an 8th inning RBI double from SS Eduardo Garcia to bring home Chourio (who’d singled). RHP Michele Vassalotti was then extraordinary in the scoreless 9th and 10th innings, striking out five more Fayetteville hitters while conceding only a harmless hit and walk. Vassalotti lowered his season ERA to an impeccable 2.10 and earned the win for his efforts. Despite two 9th inning singles, Quero and Chourio were unable to walk off the game in that opportunity, thus leaving the hero work to 2B Zack Raabe, who singled home Manfred’s ghost with one out in the 10th inning. The victory gave Carolina a 5-1 series win on the week. Next week’s outlook: 39-36 Carolina will play 32-43 Kannapolis on the road this week. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 5, Cedar Rapids 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, details: Timber Rattlers Wrap a 10-2 Homestand with a 5-4 Win Youtube highlights from Wisconsin’s exceptional media team: The early game see-saw was active in this game, with runs scored off struggling starters before the very capable bullpens took over. Wisconsin RHP Zach Mort escaped a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning before Tristan Peters gave the Timber Rattlers the initial 1-0 lead on an RBI single. That lead was extended to 3-1 in the 2nd inning thanks to back-to-back jacks from 1B Ashton McGee and SS Antonio Pinero . However, Cedar Rapids responded immediately with a three-run homer off Mort in the 3rd inning for a 4-3 lead, before 3B Zavier Warren knotted it up 4-4 in the same inning with an RBI double. Warren now has a 10-game hitting streak. The Second Act of the game was in direct contrast to the frenetic first three innings, with RHP Brady Schanuel masterfully retiring nine of ten batters he faced over three scoreless innings, thus dropping his ERA from 6.86 to a more palatable 5.96. Of course, Wisconsin also posed minimal threat from the 4th through the 7th innings, as the home fans waited with bated breadth for an exciting denouement. Although it wasn’t a save situation, super stopper RHP Cam Robinson nonetheless entered the game in the 8th inning for the potential two-inning win. Although Robinson yielded a leadoff 8th inning single and two-out 9th inning single, the Kernels of course never really had a chance against Mr. Robinson. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, OF Arbert Cipion doubled, then was brought home by 2B Tyler Black’s RBI single into center field, giving Wisconsin an impenetrable 5-4 advantage. Robinson struck out the final hitter to earn the victory, in what is likely the last High-A action he’ll ever see, given his well-earned promotion to AA Biloxi, which he announced after the game: Next week’s outlook: 44-30 Wisconsin (8-1 in the second half) hits the road to face the 42-33 South Bend Cubs (also 8-1 in the second half) this week, with RHP Justin Jarvis starting the opener. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 8, Biloxi 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Four Home Runs Not Enough for Shuckers in Series Finale That’s a fourth consecutive loss for Biloxi, which may feel outgunned (11 available position players, including three catchers, along with two players that were expected to be playing at lower levels). However, one cannot blame an offense which puts up five runs. RHPs Justin Bullock and Carlos Luna once again tag-teamed this game, with Bullock starting and giving up runs in four of the first five innings. Together, they were knocked around for 15 hits over the nine innings. Future major league catcher Jakson Reetz hit a two-out 1st inning homer (18th of the season) for a temporary 2-1 lead. Tied up 2-2 in the 2nd inning, two Shucker singles unfortunately went for naught. Trailing 3-2 in the 3rd inning, a Cam Devanney double also yielded no runs. Down 5-2 by the 6th inning, Mr. Reetz smacked his 19th home run of the season to bring Biloxi within two runs at 5-3. Luna was actually terrific through three innings (no runs, two singles, one walk, seven strikeouts) before running out of gas in the 9th inning. In that final frame, he conceded three runs on five hits for an 8-3 deficit. 2B Felix Valerio and C Jason Lopez each hit 9th inning homers to make the final score a more respectable 8-5. Next week’s outlook: 36-37 Biloxi is on the move to play in Montgomery (32-36) this week. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 7, Indianapolis 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Take Series in Front of Sellout Crowd Three batters into this game, Nashville already trailed 2-0, but RHP Alec Bettinger got significant support early and often. First inning doubles from SS Brice Turang and OF David Dahl (RBI), then a run-scoring wild pitch and RBI single from 1B Jon Singleton gave Bettinger a helpful 3-2 lead. Bettinger then worked around a 2nd inning double before things got really weird. Yes, Nashville manager Rick Sweet has had a deep, loaded roster all season, but he ran out of infielders in this game! Newcomer 3B Patrick Dorrian exited after a 2nd inning flyout, forcing Tyler White to vacate the designated hitter spot and the Sounds’ pitchers to bat for the remainder of the contest. Bettinger was assisted by a terrific play from Turang in the 2nd inning, then C Brian Navaretto throwing out a base stealer in the 3rd inning. The deluge hit Indianapolis in the bottom of that 3rd inning: OF Abraham Almonte homer (9th of the year), Dahl double, Singleton RBI double, 2B Weston Wilson RBI single for a 7-2 advantage. Singleton is really turning a corner, reaching base all four times in this game (two singles, two walks). Indianapolis ultimately out-hit Nashville 14-9, getting to Bettinger for another two runs in the 5th inning to make the game interesting at 7-4. However, RHP Tyler Herb had his second straight solid game in relief, pitching four scoreless innings in spite of material traffic: six hits, one walk. The Indians will feel like they should have gotten more out of this game, stranding 11 runners and failing to score any runs despite having the game-tying batter at the plate in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. How’d those Sounds’ pitchers do at the plate, you ask? Mr. Bettinger walked(!) on five pitches in that exciting 3rd inning, then took three called strikes to end the 5th inning. Mr. Herb was also called out on strikes to end the 7th inning, stranding the bases loaded. In that frame, Nashville failed to score in spite of a single and two walks. Bettinger and Herb didn’t swing in any of their three at-bats. Oh, if you’re expecting a promotion from AA Biloxi to fill the sudden infield gap at AAA Nashville, given the injuries to Pablo Reyes and Dorrian, don’t hold your breath. Biloxi’s also a bit short on depth and INF/OF Mark Mathias is likely returning from the MLB taxi squad, given that the Big Club returns home to Milwaukee today. Next week’s outlook: The 47-30 Sounds travel to second place 46-32 Columbus this week, with RHP Caleb Boushley expected to start the opener We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report.
