Biloxi crushes a team record six home runs in support of Noah Zavolas’ 2022 debut. A phenomenal eight-K, three-inning shutout debut for Stiven Cruz led Carolina to victory. Nashville racks up 11 runs for a comfortable win. Brandon Knarr is once-again dominant for Wisconsin, with ten strikeouts in seven shutout innings. What a terrific Sunday for our minor league affiliates, as each and every one jumped out to early leads which held up nicely: Nashville Sounds – 8-4 by the 4th inning Biloxi Shuckers – 4-1 by the 4th inning and 7-1 by the 5th inning Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – 3-0 through 5; 4-0 through 6 Carolina Mudcats – 5-0 in the 2nd inning; 9-1 in the 5th inning And let’s give a shoutout to the minor league staffers and players obviously working hard in extended spring training in Arizona. If the fabulous initial performances of OF Jackson Chourio and RHP Stiven Cruz are anything to go by, there’s some serious competition and development going on down there. The recently-promoted 20-year old Cruz had a scintillating debut for Carolina, striking out eight of the 11 batters he faced, whilst otherwise only conceding a walk, fly out and “soft line drive” single to right field. Who does he think he is, Brandon Knarr? Well, that’d be something special, as Knarr dazzled for Wisconsin on Sunday by shutting out the opposition over seven innings of three-hit, one-walk, ten-strikeout ball. Or if dominant pitching is too boring for you, Sunday saw a team-record six home runs for our Biloxi Shuckers, including two each for Joey Wiemer and Cam Devanney. Oh, and Alberis Ferrer jacked a grand slam for Carolina ?. Coupled with a Brewers’ victory, Sunday, May 15, 2022 almost went down in history as a perfect Wisconsin sports day. Almost… Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Knarr, Wiemer, Devanney, Cruz and Nashville’s Weston Wilson (three hits, four RBIs). Sorry Alberis – your grand slam would have been enough on any other day. Transactions: · None Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 12, Fayetteville 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Cruz Totals 8 Ks; Ferrer Hits Grand Slam in 12-6 Victory It’s Stiven Cruz’s world and we’re all just enjoying living in it. The 20-year old Nicaraguan was more-than-ready for his 2022 debut, striking out the side in the first inning and then working around a 2nd inning walk to K the next three hitters. In all, he threw 60 pitches over three innings, with no runner reaching 2nd base. On this day, the opposing starter was not quite as sharp, to say the least. Five walks, a single and a wild pitch in the 2nd inning gave Carolina a 3-0 lead before OF Jackson Chourio lined a single to left field to extend the lead to 5-0. At 5-1 with two outs in the top of the 5th inning, 3B Alberis Ferrer blasted a grand slam to left field for his third home run of 2022, seemingly giving the team sufficient cushion. However, some scuffling by RHPs Trevor Tietz and Miguel Segura enabled Fayetteville to claw back to 9-6 in the 7th inning, before LHP Jakob Brustoski calmed nerves by striking out the side in the 8th inning. Thankfully, the Mudcats tacked on another three runs in the 9th inning to put the game out of reach, aided by four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Carolina’s win was enough to draw the week’s series 3-3 with Fayetteville and keep the Mudcats’ record above .500 in 2022. The main downside in this game was SS Eduardo Garcia’s early exit after a fielding error in the 7th inning. Hopefully he’ll be back in the lineup early this week. Performances of Note: Jackson Chourio – 2-5, double, 2 RBIs Jeferson Quero – 2-3, 2 BBs, 2 SBs Alberis Ferrer – 1-3, HR, BB, HBP, 6 RBIs Eduardo Garcia – 1-3, BB, RBI Jesus Chirinos – 1-2, 3 BBs Stiven Cruz – 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks Junior Montero (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Jakob Brustoski – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 3 Ks Christian Tripp – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BBs, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 17-16 Mudcats return home to face Down East (14-19) in the third series of 2022 between these rivals. Expect RHPs Edwin Jimenez and Israel Puello to start the opener of the six-game series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, Quad Cities 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Knarr Quiets Quad Cities with Ten Ks LHP Brandon Knarr doesn’t ask for much from his offense, so Joe Gray Jr.’s two-run shot to left field in the 3rd inning surely had him smiling with a 2-0 lead. After working around a one-out single and walk in the first inning, Knarr only allowed two more River Bandits to reach base over his seven innings of work. This was Knarr’s 5th consecutive win. Of course, Quad Cities players and fans must have been excited upon seeing Knarr remain in the dugout in the 8th inning and their prayers seemed to be answered when RHP Joey Matulovich allowed the first three hitters to reach base (two hit-by-pitch, single). Matulovich nearly escaped unscathed, but a two-out walk brought the potential game-winning run to the plate. Timber Rattler Manager Joe Ayrault wasn’t messing around in this one, pulling Matulovich after 23 pitches to have RHP James Meeker end Quad Cities’ threat with a strikeout. Meeker remained in the game to cover the 9th inning, earning his 3rd save of 2022. Wisconsin’s victory gave them a second-consecutive 5-1 series win over their opponent, which is huge in light of 3rd place South Bend coming to town next week. Performances of Note: Tyler Black – 3-5, double, RBI Joe Gray Jr. – 1-5, HR, 2 RBIs Darrien Miller – 1-4, double, HBP, RBI Zavier Warren – 1-3, double, 2 BBs Tristan Peters – 1-4, double Brandon Knarr (Win) – 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 10Ks James Meeker (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 22-11 Timber Rattlers return home for their second series of the year against South Bend (20-13). LHP Antoine Kelly is listed as the Game One starter, but don’t be surprised if LHP Russell Smith (last pitched May 7th) or RHP Ryne Moore (recently promoted to High-A) get in some work as well. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Birmingham 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: History Again! Biloxi Launches Franchise-Record Six Home Runs The Shuckers won their series! The Shuckers won their series! After a frustrating month, Biloxi’s bats have woken up and the squad notched a 4-2 series win over the Birmingham Barons, their first series victory since April 17th. RHP Noah Zavolas apparently does not subscribe to my “rust” theory, where I give athletes a few mulligans after a long lay-off. (Remember Michael Jordan putting his shorts on backwards and shooting 7-for-28 in his grand mid-season return to the Chicago Bulls?) Zavolas was cool, calm and collected through three innings of work in his 2022 debut, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced and getting the boost he needed when OF Joey Wiemer smacked his 8th homer of 2022 for a 1-0 Biloxi lead in the 3rd inning. However, the 4th inning looked like trouble, with a Birmingham single and two walks opening the frame. To my shock, Zavolas remained in the game, striking out dangerous veteran left-handed hitter Craig Dedelow (eight home runs in 2022) before then being lifted for RHP JT Hintzen. Hintzen was up to the task in this one, inducing a sacrifice fly and a ground out to keep the contest tight at 1-1. In the bottom half of the 4th inning, the Shuckers decided to make a winner of Hintzen, with Jakson Reetz connecting on his 7th home run of 2022 (for the 3rd consecutive day!) and then Cam Devanney blasting a 2-run homer to give Biloxi a 4-1 lead. The shock and awe kept coming, as Wiemer (two-run shot) and Felix Valerio went back-to-back in the 5th inning and Devanney added his 2nd of the game (and 4th of the year) in the 6th inning. The team decided to give RHP Victor Castaneda a bit of work in this one and he was unlucky to give up two runs in the 7th inning on a walk, infield hit and deflected single into left field. That said, Castaneda still struck out six batters over three innings and the Barons never seriously threatened. Performances of Note: Joey Wiemer – 3-5, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs Cam Devanney – 2-4, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs Jakson Reetz – 2-4, HR, RBI Tristen Lutz – 2-3, BB Sal Frelick – 2-5 Felix Valerio – 1-5, HR, RBI Noah Zavolas – 3 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BBs, 3 Ks JT Hintzen (Win) – 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 0 Ks Nash Walters – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 1 K Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: The 16-17 Shuckers travel to face the 14-19 Mississippi Braves. LHP Nick Bennett (5.28 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 6.5 K/9 in 29 innings) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Mississippi lineup. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 11, Jacksonville 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Take Sixth Straight Series With Sunday Win Nashville had won five straight series entering this game and wasn’t ready to entertain any possibility of a 3-3 draw with Jacksonville this week, jumping out to a 4-0 first inning lead on two-out doubles by 3B Weston Wilson and OF Pablo Reyes. However, starting RHP Alec Bettinger is still rounding into 2022 form and was unfortunately roughed up in the 2nd inning (thus re-proving my rust theory), giving up three hits, a walk and sacrifice fly to quickly re-knot the contest at 4-4. RHP Luke Barker then served as an efficient bridge to innings-eater RHP Josh Lindblom, covering the 3rd inning before another Sounds’ barrage. Once again doing all their damage with two outs, Nashville posted another four runs in the 4th inning, including an RBI infield single by Tyler White (snapping an 0-for-27 skid) and a bases-clearing double by Wilson. Lindblom was his usual efficient self, allowing only two hits and two walks over five innings of work. SS Brice Turang had been in a mini-slump (0-for-10 before a first inning infield single), so his 7th inning two-RBI single extending the Sounds’ lead to 11-4 had to feel good. As if 11 runs weren’t enough, the scoreline could have ballooned much further if not for three tremendous defensive plays by the Jumbo Shrimp, which you can see on their twitter feed. Performances of Note: Weston Wilson – 3-5, 2 doubles, BB, 4 RBIs Pablo Reyes – 3-5, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, SB Alex Jackson – 2-5, double, SB Brice Turang – 2-6, 2 RBIs Jonathan Davis – 2-4, BB, HBP Abraham Almonte – 2-4, BB, HBP Andruw Monasterio – 1-4, BB Alec Bettinger – 2 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Luke Barker (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BBs, 0 Ks Josh Lindblom – 5 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 BBs, 5 Ks Trevor Kelley – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: Nashville (24-11) is home this week to take on the Louisville Bats (13-22). RHP Caleb Boushley (4.28 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 33 2/3 innings) is expected to make his 8th start of the year to open the series. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Such a strange day injury-wise. We got Lutz, Figueroa and Mort back (though no injuries were ever confirmed for the latter two), but lost Zamora, Mitchell and perhaps Bello. If we want to boost the hitting depth in Biloxi and Wisconsin (open question, honestly), I'd look for possible promotions of 2B Zack Raabe and/or OF Arbert Cipion from Low-A Carolina to High-A Wisconsin, plus a return of IF Ashton McGee back to AA Biloxi. Of course, we could also be bold and push SS Eduardo Garcia, though that K rate is a bit scary. On verra...

Keston Hiura drove in seven runs as Nashville cruised. Clutch hitting (including three triples) turned ten hits into ten runs for a Wisconsin victory, while Biloxi produced only three runs on 11 hits in a loss. The frustrated Mudcats left 11 men on base in their defeat. Keston Hiura (2) and Mark Mathis (1) hit three home runs over the first five innings to give Ethan Small plenty of cushion in a Nashville 10-1 rout in Jacksonville. The Timber Rattlers produced a similar scoreline 10-2 in Quad Cities, though the runs came late and without any long balls. I’m sure Wisconsin’s Tristan Peters and Tyler Black enjoyed some rest after recording a combined three triples in the game. By contrast, Biloxi and Carolina missed several chances to knock in runs, with each dropping their second consecutive game of the week. Game Balls go to Hiura, Mark Mathias, Ethan Small, Peters and Black. Transactions: RHP Ryne Moore promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Stiven Cruz promoted to Low-A Carolina from DSL Brewers1 RHP Justin Bullock activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 7, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mascai and Cerny Lead Fayetteville Offense to Second Win Over Mudcats As is often the case in sports and life, you’ve got to take advantage of the chances when they come, lest you regret it later. In this one, the Mudcats stranded five runners over the first three innings and six more over the final three innings, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in their loss. RHP Alexander Cornielle took the loss after yielding two runs in the first inning and then giving up a two-run jack to .194-hitting Victor Mascal in the 4th inning to fall behind 4-2. However, let's take strong encouragement from his eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings, which looks like a sign of progress for the young hurler. That Woodpecker lead steadily grew to 7-2 by the 7th inning before the Mudcats loaded the bases with one out in the 8th inning. Credit must be given to Fayetteville’s Ian Foggo, who escaped that jam in his first appearance of the season, striking out six Carolina batters over the final two innings of the game. Performances of Note: Oswel Leones – 2-5, double Arbert Cipion – 1-3, triple, BB, RBI Hendry Mendez – 1-3, 2 BBs, SB Alexander Cornielle (Loss) – 4 2/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 5 H, 2 BBs, 1 WP, 8 Ks Junior Montero – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Miguel Segura (5.21 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 in 19 innings) is scheduled to start, as Carolina needs a win to tie up the series at two games apiece. However, let’s be on the lookout to see whether newly-promoted RHP Stiven Cruz gets his first full season action. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 10, Quad Cities 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Timber Rattlers Take Sixth Straight Win Although the final score suggests a blowout, Wisconsin actually trailed 2-0 after three innings in this one before the bats came to life in a big way. Kudos to Joe Gray Jr. and Ethan Murray for gunning down a River Bandit at third base to end a first inning threat. OF Tristan Peters collected Wisconsin’s first clutch hit, a triple in the 4th inning to score Zavier Warren (who’d walked), which 1B Wes Clarke followed up with a sacrifice fly to knot the contest at 2-2. An infield single by 2B Tyler Black accompanied by a Quad Cities throwing error gave the Timber Rattlers a 3-2 lead in the 5th inning, with RHP Justin Jarvis ultimately earning the win, though supported by RHP Robbie Baker's excellent 2 2/3 innings of scoreless work. Still tight heading into the 7th inning, Wisconsin opened the gap via an Alex Hall RBI-double, run scoring wild pitch and then a Tyler Black sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-2. In the bottom half, another solid defensive play (this time OF Micah Bello throwing out a River Bandit at home) wiped out another Quad Cities threat. The 8th inning saw Peters (another triple), Clarke (run-scoring single) and Tyler Black (3-run triple) again combine to put the game out of reach. Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 3-5, 2 triples, RBI Tyler Black – 2-4, triple, SF, 4 RBIs Alex Hall – 2-3, double, BB, RBI Carlos D. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Birmingham 5, Biloxi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Falls To Birmingham Despite 11 Hits The return of RHP Justin Bullock, an early 3-1 lead and usually-solid RHP Carlos Luna on the mound for the middle innings looked like perfect ingredients for a Shuckers’ victory, but it was not to be on this day. Bullock hadn’t appeared in a game since leaving his first start on April 8th early, so the team must have been excited to have their dependable starter back on the mound. Bullock was limited to 35 pitches over two innings, exiting tied at 1-1 thanks to a Felix Valerio solo shot. Luna looked to have things in hand with a clean 3rd inning, followed by a two-run double by Jakson Reetz in the bottom half of the inning to score Garrett Mitchell and Joey Wiemer (who’d both singled). However, five consecutive Baron hits opened the top of the 5th inning to re-knot the game at 3-3 before Birmingham’s Jose Rodriguez produced a two-run, two-out single to take a 5-3 lead which held up the rest of the way. Credit goes to JT Hintzen, though, for entering with the bases loaded and one out, then stranded all three runners (soft infield line out, strikeout). Unfortunately, Biloxi was unable to match that clutch hitting, failing to score despite a one-out single (Brent Diaz) in the 6th inning and leadoff 7th and 8th inning singles (Noah Campbell, Thomas Dillard respectively). In addition to Hintzen, Nash Walters and Luis Contreras must also be recognized for giving their offense a chance, as the three relievers gave up zero runs over the final 4 2/3 innings. Performances of Note: Joey Wiemer – 2-4, double Garrett Mitchell – 2-4 Felix Valerio – 1-4, HR, RBI Jakson Reetz – 1-4, double, 2 RBIs Brock Holt – 1-4, SB Justin Bullock – 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BBs, 0 Ks Carlos Luna (Loss) – 2 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 K JT Hintzen – 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K Nash Walters – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Luis Contreras – 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: Biloxi is counting on LHP Andy Otero (2.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 28 1/3 innings) to come through win a dominant effort to end their two-game skid and tie up this week’s series with Birmingham at 2-2. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Jacksonville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Small Shines, Hiura Homers Twice in Sounds Victory If anyone needed a reminder that 2B Keston Hiura can hammer right-handed pitching, they certainly got it in this Nashville blowout. After LHP Ethan Small once again avoided big hits despite struggling with walks (two in the first inning, one to lead off the second inning), the Nashville offense blew up the game in the 3rd inning, starting with Mark Mathias’ 3rd homer of the season. Then after young prospects Mario Feliciano and Brice Turang each singled, Hiura pulled a two-out, 0-1 pitch out to left field for a three-run blast, his first since recently being optioned to AAA. Unfortunately, Hiura helped give a run back with a throwing error in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but he made up for it with a two-out, full count homer the other way in the 5th inning, scoring Weston Wilson (who’d doubled) and effectively putting the game out of reach at 6-1. With Small striking out nine batters in just five innings, the Sounds were comfortable on this evening. However, even with that large cushion, RHP Zack Brown and Luke Barker still took their work very seriously, combining to throw four hitless, scoreless innings to close it out. Performances of Note: Keston Hiura – 3-4, 2 HR, HBP, 7 RBIs Mark Mathias – 3-4, HR, RBI Weston Wilson – 2-5, double Mario Feliciano – 2-4 Brice Turang – 1-3, 2 BBs Ethan Small (Win) – 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 BBs, 1 WP, 1 balk, 9 Ks Zack Brown – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K Luke Barker – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Dylan File (3.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.3 K/9 in 27 1/3 innings), will try to replicate his last start, in which he gave up only three hits and no runs over five innings, as Nashville aims for a 3-1 series lead over Jacksonville. Alex Hall delivered the game-winning single to snatch a Rattler victory from defeat. Jackson Chourio had a special day, as a Mudcat rally fell just short. The Sounds threw their 5th shutout of this young season. Biloxi gave it their all in another close loss. While the Sounds cruised to a comfortable Mother’s Day win, each of the Brewers’ other affiliates was left for dead late in their matchups: Carolina trailed 7-2 in the 8th inning Wisconsin had been out-hit 10 to 1 and was down 3-0 entering the bottom of the 9th inning Biloxi had 1 hit through 7 innings and was behind 2-0… …but each of those squads made their mothers proud by never giving up: Jackson Chourio homered to spark a 5-run Mudcat rally, though they eventually fell 9-7 The Timber Rattlers drew 5 walks, before Alex Hall’s 2-out, 2-run game-winning single Brent Diaz clobbered a tying 2-run blast, before the Shuckers lost in extra innings A few Game Balls on this special Sunday are reserved for the pitchers who kept throwing blanks to give their struggling offenses a chance (Tyler Herb, Jason Alexander, TJ Shook), while Jackson Chourio (4-for-4, 1st homer) was the star hitter of the day and Alex Hall was an offensive and defensive hero. Transactions: P Alec Bettinger was transferred to AAA Nashville’s Active Roster from the Development List Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Augusta 9, Carolina 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Chourio Goes 4-for-4 with a Home Run in 9-7 Loss Opening the game by giving up a leadoff double and then a run-scoring throwing error by 3B Alberis Ferrer on a sacrifice bunt obviously discombobulated normally solid RHP Brannon Jordan, who then walked a batter and gave up two singles to quickly put Carolina down 3-0 at home. Jordan was reasonably solid from that point, while OF Jackson Chourio kept trying to inspire the offense: Singling but not scoring in the 1st inning Singling, stealing second and scoring on a DH Hendry Mendez single to cut the Augusta lead to 3-1 in the 3rd inning Doubling in OF Arbert Cipion in the 5th inning to claw the game back to 5-2 Homering to cut it to 7-3 and lead a 5-run rally in the 8th inning Walking to lead off the 9th inning and bring the potential tying run to the plate with nobody out https://twitter.com/CarolinaMudcats/status/1523370833464692736?cxt=HHwWgMDU3fXsjKQqAAAA After a Green Jacket infield hit and outfield hit chased Jordan to lead off the 5th inning, a steal of home and then a third Ferrer error pushed the deficit to 5-1. https://twitter.com/CarolinaMudcats/status/1523375915325353984?cxt=HHwWgMDTxdyUj6QqAAAA It felt like the game was likely over in the top of the 8th inning, when an infield single, walk and 2-out, opposite field triple off LHP Jakob Brustoski stretched the score to 7-2, but it only added to the drama. Starting with Chourio’s homer opposite field homer, the first 5 Mudcat hitters reached base in the bottom of the 8th inning, ultimately tying the game on 2B Zack Raabe’s first-pitch single to center to score OF Hedbert Perez. https://twitter.com/CarolinaMudcats/status/1523386691280531456?cxt=HHwWgMCr1fuHlKQqAAAA Unfortunately, RHP Brandon Ramey wasn’t able to keep it knotted up, as Augusta’s Stephen Paolini pulled a 1-out pitch out to right field to re-claim a lead which would hold up, forcing Carolina to split the 6-game series 3-3. MLB Pipeline thankfully put the Chourio highlights in one clip: https://twitter.com/MLBPipeline/status/1523414349338931200?cxt=HHwWgMCjofDRoKQqAAAA Performances of Note: Jackson Chourio – 4-4, HR, double, BB, 2 RBIs, SB Jesus Chirinos – 2-5 Hendry Mendez – 1-3, BB, RBI Hedbert Perez – 1-4, RBI Zack Raabe – 1-4, RBI Brannon Jordan – 4 IP, 5 R (3 ER), 6 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 4 K Trevor Tietz – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 WP, 2 K Junior Montero – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Brandon Ramey (Loss) – 1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 0 K Next week’s outlook: The 14-13 Mudcats return travel to Fayetteville (9-18), with RHP Ryne Moore (unless Mr. Moore (2.57 ERA through 28 innings) is on a bus to Quad Cities to join the Timber Rattlers) likely to start the first game of the series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, Fort Wayne 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Do It Again! Wisconsin’s media team always does an amazing job, so please read their write-up and enjoy the video summary: https://twitter.com/TimberRattlers/status/1523427911323500546?cxt=HHwWhIDS9aTnpqQqAAAA Players and fans may have been forgiven in thinking this was simply not Wisconsin’s day, as they’d had more players caught stealing (2) than hits (1) through 8 innings. However, Manager Joe Ayrault has instilled some crazy confidence in these Timber Rattlers, who found another way to win, this time despite being down 3-0 and out-hit 10-1 entering the bottom of the 9th inning. RHP Max Lazar got the start, but was limited to just two innings (plus two leadoff walks in the 3rd inning) after pitching on Tuesday earlier in the week. Three TinCap 2nd inning hits put the Rattlers behind 2-0, which seemed likely to hold up against stellar Fort Wayne pitching. Thankfully, Wisconsin’s pitching and fielding kept them in the game, starting with RHP Tyler Gillies and C Alex Hall combining to eliminate that 2-on, nobody out 3rd inning threat: Strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out to catch the lead runner at 3rd base Another caught stealing, this time at 2nd base RHP TJ Shook came into the 2-0 game in the 4th inning, providing a near-certainty that the game would remain within reach: Two infield singles in the 5th inning didn’t faze Shook, who induced two ground-outs to exit that inning cleanly Shook responded to a 1-out, 7th inning double by striking out the next two batters However, a Fort Wayne run-scoring double off RHP Robbie Baker extended the TinCap lead to 3-0 in the 8th inning, which looked somewhat insurmountable after no Rattlers reached base in the bottom half of the inning. RHP James Meeker pitched around one single in the top of the 9th inning to give his mates one more chance. What a crazy finish: 5 walks and 2 strikeouts in the bottom of the 9th inning brought the Rattlers back to 3-2 with the bases loaded and 2 outs. That 5th walk was enough for the TinCap manager to call on a reliever to attempt to close it out. Likely counting on a first pitch strike, Hall received it and smacked the ball into right field to score Joe Gray Jr. and Tristan Peters with the game-winning runs. https://twitter.com/TimberRattlers/status/1523412705981345792?cxt=HHwWgMCtpZzyn6QqAAAA Performances of Note: Micah Bello – 1-3, BB, RBI Alex Hall – 1-4, 2 RBIs Ethan Murray – 0-1, 2 BB, 1 HBP Max Lazar – 2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 K Tyler Gillies – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K TJ Shook – 4 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 5 K James Meeker (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 2 K Next week’s outlook: The 17-10 Timber Rattlers take the bus to Quad Cities (11-16), with LHP Brandon Knarr the expected Game One starter. Again, that’s unless the excellent Mr. Knarr (1.27 ERA through 28 1/3 innings) is heading to Mississippi on a promotion. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 4, Biloxi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Walk-Off Home Run In Tenth Leads to Sweep of Shuckers After those amazing Carolina and Wisconsin comebacks, it really seemed too much to ask or expect that Biloxi would do the same. I mean, in the midst of a 6-game losing streak, down 2-0 with 2 outs in the 8th inning after mustering only 1 hit to that point in a frustrating contest, one could not reasonably expect the team to pull itself off the mat. And yet, the Shuckers showed their resiliency, tying it up against the odds and even taking an extra-inning lead before succumbing to the 7th straight loss, this one of the walk-off variety. RHP Tyler Herb was once again fantastic, starting a second game of the week and throwing blanks for 5 straight innings. Herb dispatched the most dangerous threat after a walk and hit in the 5th inning by notching a 3-pitch strikeout and inducing a 1-3 groundout. Unfortunately, Biloxi’s offense was downright pitiful through most of this one, putting the minimum number of men to the plate (21) through seven innings, though we must credit Montgomery’s terrific defense: A 1st inning walk by Sal Frelick was eliminated by being caught stealing A 5th inning Ashton McGee liner back to the pitcher enabled Felix Valerio (who’d singled) to be doubled up off of first base A 6th inning Cam Devanney liner to second base caught Brent Diaz (who’d walked) off of first base After solid 6th inning work by RHP Matt Hardy, the Biscuits ultimately grabbed a 2-0 lead with two doubles, a single and a sacrifice fly off of RHP Nash Walters in the 7th inning. However, with two outs in the top of the 8th inning, Biloxi responded, with McGee earning a full count walk and Brent Diaz pulling the first pitch he saw out to left field (his 3rd home runs of 2022) to knot the contest at 2-2. Diaz then threw out an attempted base stealer at 2nd base to send the game to extra innings, where McGee came through with a 2-out single to score Manfred’s ghost (Freddy Zamora) and give the Shuckers a 3-2 lead. However, the Biscuits’ opening hitter of the bottom of the 10th inning Evan Edwards gave his mother a nice memory, blasting a 1-2 pitch off of RHP JT Hintzen to score himself and Manfred’s ghost and give his squad 4-3 win and complete a 6-game sweep over Biloxi on the week. https://twitter.com/BiscuitBaseball/status/1523437862003220480?cxt=HHwWgICpob-qq6QqAAAA Performances of Note: Brent Diaz – 1-3, HR, BB, 2 RBIs Ashton McGee – 1-3, BB, RBI Felix Valerio – 1-3, BB Tyler Herb – 4 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 K Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K Zach Vennaro – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP,0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K JT Hintzen (Loss) – 0 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K Next week’s outlook: The 12-15 Shuckers come home to lick their wounds and face Birmingham (11-16). RHP Victor Castaneda (2.31 ERA, 1.11 WHIP in 23 1/3 innings) is the likely starter of the first game of the 6-game set. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Norfolk 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Shutout Tides on Mother’s Day Only the heroics of Alex Hall could prevent OF Jonathan Davis from claiming one of the Game Balls on this Mother’s Day. As a leadoff hitter, the 29-year old Davis is problem for other teams, showing why he’s played in the majors in 4 consecutive seasons. While 40-man roster RHP Alec Bettinger made his 2022 debut, successfully working around 5 base runners (2 hits, 3 walks) through 3 innings, the pesky Davis kept creating opportunities for the Sounds: First inning infield single and stolen base, though stranded at 3rd base Second inning single, scoring on a Jon Singleton walk to follow-up Keston Hiura’s RBI hit-by-pitch and extend the Sound lead to 2-0 Sixth inning single, coming home on a Singleton base hit to left field. 3-0 Nashville Eighth inning walk, though stranded https://twitter.com/nashvillesounds/status/1523409308553125888?cxt=HHwWgICpvbusnqQqAAAA After OF David Dahl was scratched from the original Saturday line-up, it was great to see him back in right field on Sunday, with his 6th inning RBI single completing the scoring on this fine day. With Bettinger’s return, RHP Jason Alexander was bumped from starting but thankfully still got in his scheduled work, keeping zeros on the board from the 4th through the 8th innings to earn a deserved win. https://twitter.com/nashvillesounds/status/1523401764321787904?cxt=HHwWgIDUyar1mqQqAAAA While Keston Hiura continues to hit righties well, I’m sure that Brewers’ brass is hoping he can face some lefties in AAA. Unfortunately, his first inning strikeout was his only chance against a left-handed pitcher in this one, as he went 1-for-3 against righties the rest of the way. We should recognize the nice work by 3B Mark Mathias to help Alec Bettinger keep a clean sheet: https://twitter.com/nashvillesounds/status/1523388337590968321?cxt=HHwWgoCp0eXnlKQqAAAA Performances of Note: Jonathan Davis – 3-4, BB, SB David Dahl – 2-5, RBI Weston Wilson – 2-4 Jon Singleton – 1-3, 2 BB, 2 RBIs Keston Hiura – 1-4, HBP, RBI Brice Turang – 1-4, BB Brian Navarreto – 1-4, SB Alec Bettinger – 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 3 K Jason Alexander (Win) – 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K JC Mejia – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: Nashville (20-9) heads to Jacksonville (18-12) this week, aiming to keep the good times rolling. Veteran RHP Josh Lindblom (2.33 ERA, 0.96 WHIP in 27 innings) is the expected starting pitcher in the opening game. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. OF Jonathan Davis capped off Nashville’s comeback with an RBI single in extra innings. Sizeable early leads for Carolina and Biloxi couldn’t hold up. Antoine Kelly’s 10-K, 1-hit performance wasn’t enough for Wisconsin. Although promising nights turned sour for Carolina, Biloxi and Wisconsin on Thursday night, that means there were a number of solid performances as well. Hopefully the young men can take some inspiration from Nashville, which put men on base all night and eventually snatched victory from defeat. The stars of the night were Wisconsin’s exciting prospect LHP Antoine Kelly, who dutifully bounced back from his shortest stint of the season (3 IP on April 29th) to dominate the TinCaps for 5 innings and AAA Nashville’s bullpen which blanked Norfolk for 5 1/3 innings to give the offense a chance. Game Balls go to Kelly, C Jeferson Quero, 1B Thomas Dillard, RHP Trevor Kelley and OF Jonathan Davis. Transactions: C Jesus Garcia assigned back to ACL Brewers Gold from AAA Nashville (he’d been moved to Nashville 6 days earlier, but didn’t see any action) Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Augusta 10, Carolina 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mudcats Waste Early Lead in 10-5 Loss Things looked rosy early in this game, as RHP Edwin Jimenez worked around a first-inning triple and walk, then six of the first seven Mudcats reached base in the bottom of the inning. The inning’s big hit was C Jeferson Quero’s first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast to score CF Jackson Chourio and 1B Jesus Chirinos. In all, Carolina led 5-0 after the first. Things looked rosy early in this game, as RHP Edwin Jimenez worked around a first-inning triple and walk, then six of the first seven Mudcats reached base in the bottom of the inning. The inning’s big hit was C Jeferson Quero’s first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast to score CF Jackson Chourio and 1B Jesus Chirinos. In all, Carolina led 5-0 after the first. Unfortunately, the Mudcat bats went to sleep from there and could not be awoken when needed, as the team failed to register any hits from the 2nd through the 9th inning, going 0-for-24 in that span. Meanwhile, Augusta clawed it back to 5-3 by the 5th inning and the dam burst against RHP Israel Puello in the top of the 7th inning, when 4 hits and 2 walks gave the GreenJackets a 7-5 lead which it would not relinquish. On some other positive notes, it was great to see RF Hendry Mendez back in action after departing Tuesday’s game early and LHP Jakob Brustoski threw a clean inning to put some early season struggles behind him. Performances of Note: Jeferson Quero – 1-4, HR, 3 RBIs Hendry Mendez – 1-3, BB Jackson Chourio – 1-4, double Jheremy Vargas – 1-4, RBI Edwin Jimenez – 5 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 2 BBs, 1 WP, 2 Ks Israel Puello (Loss) – 1 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Jakob Brustoski – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Alexander Cornielle (1.56 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 17 1/3 IP) is expected to make his 5th start, still searching for his first victory of 2022, as the Mudcats aim to take a 3-1 series lead at home against Augusta. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fort Wayne 4, Wisconsin 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: TinCaps Hold Off Late Rattler Rally It was a classic pitchers’ duel in Appleton, as Wisconsin’s LHP Antoine Kelly and Fort Wayne’s LHP Noel Vela posted nearly identical lines: 5 innings each, zero runs each, 10 strikeouts each. The two young studs didn’t even throw a wild pitch or hit a batter, so the only difference was the 3 hits yielded by Vela and the 1 hit and 1 walk given up by Kelly. This left it to the bullpens and unfortunately the TinCaps had the advantage on this night, though Wisconsin certainly had its chances, leaving 10 men on base and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. With Kelly’s exit after 5 innings, Fort Wayne quickly seized its chance, with the second batter (OF Corey Rosier) that RHP Miguel Guerrero faced hitting a first-pitch home run to right center field. Excellent work by RHP Joey Matulovich kept the game at 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Wisconsin took 4 walks (the last a full count RBI walk by Miller) to tie it up. However, RHP James Meeker is still searching for his 2020/2021 form and hasn’t found it yet. He opened the 9th inning with a hit-by-pitch, then issued a full count walk and a gave up an infield single to load the bases. Meeker nearly escaped the inning by getting a swinging strike out for the 2nd out. Unfortunately, consecutive singles gave Fort Wayne a 4-1 lead and RHP Robbie Baker came in to strand the remaining two runners, which he successfully did. The Wisconsin half of the 9th inning actually mirrored Fort Wayne’s, with leadoff man Carlos D. Rodriguez reaching via a hit-by-pitch, then 3 walks and another hit-by-pitch bringing the game to 4-3, bases loaded with two outs, before Miller struck out swinging to end the interesting affair. Here’s a summary of the squandered chances on the night: A leadoff first inning single by OF Tristan Peters was wiped out by a strike-em-out, throw-em-out 2nd and 3rd, 2-out situations in the 4th inning and 6th inning both went for naught A bases loaded, 2-out chance in the 8th inning mustered only 1 run The game finished with the bases loaded, Rattlers' unable to get the key hit this time In other notes: It’s great to see Joe Gray Jr. keeping at it while he slowly rediscovers his bat. On this night, he recorded 3 walks, a single and his 7th stolen base of the young season Darrien Miller caught his 4th straight game, as Manager Joe Ayrault must have decided he can benefit from more consistent work behind the plate Recently promoted Micah Bello had a night to forget, going 0-for-4 with 4 strikeouts Performances of Note: Joe Gray Jr. – 1-2, 3 BBs, RBI, SB Darrien Miller – 1-4, RBI, SB Antonio Pinero – 1-3, BB Antoine Kelly – 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 10 Ks Joey Matulovich – 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks James Meeker (Loss) – 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K Friday’s outlook: RHP Justin Jarvis (7.91 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 7.0 K/9 in 19 1/3 IP) seeks to get on track after yielding 5 earned runs and taking losses in each of his last two appearances, as the Timber Rattlers strive for a 3-1 series lead at home against Fort Wayne. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Montgomery 14, Biloxi 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi’s Early Lead Evaporates in 14-5 Loss Biloxi’s contest in Montgomery paralleled the events in Zebulon, with our squad jumping out to a 4-0 lead by the 4th inning and 5-4 lead in the 6th inning, before the Biscuit deluge. LHP Nick Bennett escaped a bases loaded, 1-out jam in the first inning by inducing a ground ball double play. Consecutive hits to lead off the second inning by OF Joey Wiemer (10th double of the season) and 2B Felix Valerio set up Thomas Dillard to smash his first home run of 2022, a 3-run blast. OF Sal Frelick added an RBI single in the 4th inning, as he continues to hit at every level, stretching the lead to 4-0, but Montgomery got to Bennett to even things up in the bottom half of the inning with 3 hits, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a fielder’s choice which couldn’t catch a runner at home. C Jakson Reetz continues to surprise, parking his 4th home run in just 44 at bats this year to help the club re-take the lead in the 6th inning, but RHP JT Hintzen wasn’t able to hold it in the bottom half. Reetz actually left the game before the bottom of the 7th inning with Biloxi down 7-5, so we’ll need to see whether this was an injury or just a case of Nick Kahle sharing catching duties on the night. After Hintzen exited, Montgomery didn’t let up against the Shuckers’ next three relievers, adding 7 runs to turn it into a rout. Performances of Note: Sal Frelick – 2-5, RBI, BB Cam Devanney – 2-4 Jakson Reetz – 1-3, HR, RBI Thomas Dillard – 1-4, HR, 3 RBIs Joey Wiemer – 1-4, double Felix Valerio – 1-3, BB Nick Bennett – 4 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 4 BBs, 3 Ks JT Hintzen (Loss) – 1 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K Robbi Hitt, Zach Vennaro, Nash Walters – combined 2 1/3 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 4 BBs, 1 WP, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Carlos Luna (2.12 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, in 17 IP) takes his turn, as Biloxi seeks to halt its 4-game losing skid and win its first game in the series in Montgomery. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Norfolk 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Walk Off on Jonathan Davis’ Base Hit The men in Nashville simply enjoy winning too much to give up on this one, with terrific bullpen work keeping the team in it throughout. After the Sounds stranded the bases loaded in the first inning, Norfolk grabbed the lead with a 2nd inning double and then 2-run shot by Rylan Bannon off Nashville starter RHP Caleb Boushley. Nashville tied it back up in the 3rd inning on a 2-run single by C Alex Jackson, plating 2B Mark Mathias and 1B Tyler White who had both singled. Boushley exited with 2-on, 2-out in the 5th inning, but JC Mejia gave up an infield single and walk to allow the Tides to re-take the lead. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Nashville loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a Jonathan Davis bunt, but only managed one run on a Brice Turang sacrifice fly. RHP Trevor Kelley was excellent, covering scoreless 9th and 10th innings, with Mathias throwing out Manfred’s ghost at home. xVictory came with Nashville’s own ghost (Weston Wilson) moving to 3rd base on a wild pitch, then scoring on a Jonathan Davis single to left Performances of Note: Alex Jackson – 2-5, double, 2 RBIs Mike Brosseau – 2-5, double Jonathan Davis – 2-4, BB, RBI, SB Caleb Boushley – 4 2/3 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks JC Mejia – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Luke Barker – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K Thomas Jankins – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Trevor Kelley (Win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks Friday’s outlook: April’s International League Pitcher of the Month LHP Ethan Small (0.77 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 13.1 K/9 in 23 1/3 IP) makes his first May start as Nashville tries to build a 3-1 series lead at home against Norfolk. After the position player promotions this week (Frelick, Bello, Chourio), I hope we see TJ Shook lead the pitcher promotions next week. I also hope Carolina OF Hendry Mendez is okay despite being subbed out in the 4th inning.

Big-time hits by Eduardo Garcia and Jheremy Vargas bring Carolina back from the brink. Wisconsin can’t hold an early lead. Biloxi’s offense continues to miss Felix Valerio. A rainout saves St. Paul from another defeat to Nashville. Our young Mudcats continue to show resiliency and savvy beyond their years, again coming out on top of a bleak game, this one a 6-4 victory at Down East in extra innings. Kudos to Coach Estevez and his young squad. Unfortunately, Wisconsin took the opposite tack, squandering a 3-0 lead against Peoria, while Biloxi continues to search for its offense sans King Felix. Game Balls go to SS Eduardo Garcia, RHP Miguel Segura, 3B Jheremy Vargas, LHP Andy Otero and LF Tristan Peters. Transactions: IF Mike Brosseau was optioned from MLB Milwaukee to AAA Nashville C Alex Jackson was optioned from MLB Milwaukee to AAA Nashville Though unofficial, prospect whisperer @ARobsBrewCrew noted after the game that OF Sal Frelick is expected to be promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin and that 1B Ernesto Martinez is currently out of Wisconsin’s lineup with a sprained wrist Game Action: Final: Carolina 6, Down East 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Garcia Leads Late Comeback in 6-4 Victory in Extras. his was a series between the Down East Wood Ducks and our beloved Carolina Mudcats, with all six games decided by two runs or less and our team coming out with a 4-2 series victory. Like Friday’s nightcap, the Mudcats faced a formidable deficit, this time down 4-0 entering the 8th inning. But let’s go back to the beginning and acknowledge the work of RHP Miguel Segura, who gave up just three walks and three hits, including an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth inning. Though the Mudcat offense wasn’t ready to produce just yet, Segura was assisted defensively by CF Hedbert Perez throwing out a runner at second base and C Jose Sibrian catching an attempted base stealer in the fourth inning. Trailing 2-0, Segura handed over to RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez, who started poorly (triple, wild pitch, home run) but retired six of the following seven batters to keep Carolina within striking distance, down 4-0. Now back to the heroics. Walks by Sibrian and LF Arbert Cipion brought SS Eduardo Garcia to the place. Despite an 0-2 count, Garcia planted the next pitch over the left-field wall to cut the Wood Duck lead to 4-3. Still down 4-3, this time with two outs and nobody in the top of the ninth inning, 3B Jheremy Vargas came to the plate, hitless to this point in the night. Facing Down East stud 22-year-old LHP Destin Dotson (0.00 ERA, 0.48 WHIP, 14.8 K/9 in 10 1/3 innings entering the contest), the 18-year-old Vargas blasted a 1-0 pitch to center field to knot the contest at 4-4. HP Jakob Brustoski put in his best work of the year, striking out two in the eighth and working around a hit-by-pitch, stolen base, and walk in the ninth inning to bring the game to extra innings. In the tenth, a double by Cipion brought Garcia to the plate with 2-on, 1-out. This time, Garcia again ripped a ball to left field, a 2-run double to deliver Carolina its first lead of the game, 6-4. RHP Trevor Tietz then handled the tenth with aplomb, striking out three hitters around one walk to not even allow Manfred’s ghost to score. That’s Tietz’s 3rd save and fourth straight clean inning. Performances of Note: Eduardo Garcia – 3-5, HR, double, 5 RBIs, SB Arbert Cipion – 2-4, double, walk Jheremy Vargas – 1-4, HR, RBI Miguel Segura – 5 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 3 walks, 4 Ks Jakob Brustoski (Win) – 1 2/3 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 4 Ks Trevor Tietz (Save) – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: Our 11-10 Carolina Mudcats return home for a six-game series against the 12-9 Augusta GreenJackets. Expect RHP Brannon Jordan (3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP in 16 innings) to start the opening game, though we’re still wondering about the status of RHP Jefferson Figueroa. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 6, Wisconsin 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Peoria Powers Past Wisconsin Down 4-1 in the series, Wisconsin and LHP Russell Smith needed a strong game and initially appeared on course, up 3-0 in the fourth inning. After Smith worked out of two-on situations in the first and third innings, the Timber Rattlers put together two doubles (Sal Frelick, Zavier Warren), a single (Joe Gray Jr.), a walk (Wes Clarke), two stolen bases (Gray twice) and a sacrifice fly (Carlos D. Rodriguez) to take a 3-0 lead. However, Smith wasn’t quite able to work out of a three-on situation in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two walks and an infield single had loaded the bases for Peoria’s 20-year-old SS Masyn Winn, who hit the first pitch, a three-run triple to tie up the contest at 3-3. {Note: We’d have to see the video to understand whether the ball fell between three defenders in shallow right and rolled to the wall or exactly what transpired.} Our shell-shocked Timber Rattlers then called upon RHP Zach Mort, who’d had an excellent month of April (0.00 ERA, 0.63 WHIP in 8 innings) but will want to forget this appearance immediately: Home run to right field Fly out to left field Home run to right-center field Home run to right-center field The Rattlers’ appeared close to finding their inner Mudcat in the 7th inning, with a left field Tristan Peters triple bringing home 2B Ethan Murray with one out. However, the team couldn’t drive him home and fell 6-4 for a crushing series loss (one win, five losses). As much as we emphasize the positives, it’s also important to note possible areas of concern. It is in this vein that we mention that the Chiefs stole another 4 bases in this contest, with nobody caught stealing. That brings Miller’s 2022 stats to an anemic two runners caught vs. 26 stolen bases. Obviously, this will be an area of focus for improvement going forward for the 21-year old. Unfortunately, we’re lacking many video highlights for the good guys this night, so let me post this one of IF Ethan Murray hitting home runs in previous games: Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 2-4, triple, RBI Joe Gray Jr. – 2-5, double, 2 SBs Sal Frelick – 2-5, double Zavier Warren – 1-4, double, RBI Russell Smith – 4 innings, 3 runs, 3 hits, 5 walk, 1 balk, 2 Ks Zach Mort (Loss) – 1 inning, 3 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 K Robbie Baker – 2 innings, no runs, 3 hits, 1 K Cam Robinson – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 12-9 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to take on the 11-10 Fort Wayne TinCaps. RHP TJ Shook (1.37 ERA, 0.86 WHIP in 19 2/3 innings) is the expected starter for the first game, perhaps tag-teaming with RHP Max Lazar. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola 4, Biloxi 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Fall in Sunday’s Game 4-1 LHP Andy Otero did his best to keep his team in the contest, only yielding one run (unearned) before exiting after issuing a full count walk with one out in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Otero has to wear that unearned run however, as it was on the back of his own fielding error and two walks to load the bases with nobody out in the third inning, escaping with a run-scoring double play and a strikeout. Offensively, some solid Shuckers’ chances came and went early in the contest, with CF Joey Wiemer and DH Luis Urias stranded at second and third after a Wiemer double (first inning) and LF Noah Campbell left at second base after his 1-out double (third inning). Down 1-0, Otero handed over RHP JT Hintzen, who gave up a two-run homer to his first batter, then another double and single to leave Biloxi in a 4-0 hole. The team clawed one run back in the bottom of the 8th inning on a Urias RBI groundout to score 2B Gabe Holt (who’d singled), but that was all the offense could muster on this night. In all, Biloxi can be pleased with its pitching in the 3-3 series tie, giving up just nine runs in the last five games of the week. To balance out the Sunday video highlights, here’s Holt making a nice play in the second inning: Performances of Note: Noah Campbell – 1-3, double, walk Joey Wiemer – 1-3, double Gabe Holt – 1-3 Andy Otero (Loss) – 5 1/3 innings, 2 runs (1 earned), 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 WP, 3 Ks Nash Walters – 1 inning, no runs, 1 hit, no walks Zach Vennaro – 1 inning, no runs, no hits, no walks, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 12-9 Biloxi Shuckers head out for the week to face the 9-11 Montgomery Biscuits. RHP Tyler Herb (1.96 ERA, 1.20 WHIP in 18 1/3 innings) is expected to start the first game in the series. Nashville Pre-Rain Media Notes Final: Cancelled due to wet grounds. Game will not be made up Via the Sounds’ website, rain details: Sounds Finale in St. Paul Canceled Due to Wet Grounds Next week’s outlook: First place Nashville (16-7) will be home this week, taking on the 12-12 Norfolk Tides. We’ll see which of RHPs Luis Perdomo, Jason Alexander (2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP in 20 innings) or RHP Josh Lindblom gets the honor of starting the opening game. When you give up 5 runs before recording your second out, then keep the other team scoreless for the next 5 2/3 innings, that’s some nice resilience. Way to go Israel Puello. He truly earned the Win this day. Too bad Wisconsin (lost) and Nashville (tie game, continuing today) couldn’t hold those leads. 1 hit, 1 walk and 18 strikeouts for Biloxi’s hitters?! That’s rough. Hopefully Valerio and Reetz are back in the lineup tonight.
