The Shuckers grabbed an early 4-1 lead, but defensive difficulties knotted it 4-4 before their suddenly lock down bullpen carried them to an extra inning win, with Tristen Lutz getting to play hero. Zach Vennaro earned that victory with two innings of stellar work, not even allowing Manfred’s ghost to advance. The efforts earned Biloxi a 3-3 series split. There was little to cheer in the Carolina or Nashville games, though Hedbert Perez continues his terrific resurgence (7th homer of the year). Each squad dropped its series 4-2 this week. Wisconsin never got a chance to even up their series in Beloit, with the Covid cancellation leaving them with a 3-2 series loss. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Lutz, Perez, Vennaro, Jakson Reetz and Mario Feliciano. Transactions: N/A Hopefully Wisconsin’s Covid cancellation doesn’t result player unavailability in the coming week. Fingers crossed! Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Myrtle Beach 15, Carolina 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mudcats Fall in Series Finale 15-6 to Myrtle Beach Carolina needed a victory in their finale against the excellent Myrtle Beach squad, but were essentially blown out of their own building, falling behind 5-0 (first inning) and 10-2 (third inning). Two game-opening walks issued by starting RHP Jefferson Figueroa were followed by an error, triple, two more errors and a wild pitch to put the Mudcats in an early 4-0 hole. On the bright side, Carolina leadoff man Eduardo Garcia homered to start the bottom of the first inning. Hedbert Perez then did the same in the second inning to cut it to 5-2, with a single and walk bringing the Mudcats’ potential game-tying run to the plate with just one out. However, opposing starter Tyler Schaffler dispatched that threat (strikeout, ground out) and the Pelicans’ offense erupted for five runs in the 3rd inning. None of the first four Mudcat pitchers were immune from the beatdown, as Figueroa, Brannon Jordan, Jakob Brustoski and Miguel Segura all struggled. Let’s give credit to Segura for at least covering five innings of work though, thus saving a few arms. Jackson Chourio had a rare game-to-forget, going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. I hate to bring attention to him this way, but that spotlight is not going to dim anytime soon, for better or worse. Shake it off, young man! We appreciate you! Performances of Note: Hedbert Perez – 2-4, HR, double, 2 RBIs Hendry Mendez – 2-3, walk Eduardo Garcia – 1-4, HR, walk, RBI Jheremy Vargas – 1-3, walk, 2 RBIs Jesus Chirinos – 1-4, RBI Jefferson Figueroa (Loss) – 2/3 IP, 5 R (1 ER), 1 H, 3 BB, 1 WP, 0 Ks Miguel Segura – 5 IP, 5 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks Karlos Morales – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: The 30-27 Mudcats hit the road to take on Royals’ Low-A affiliate Columbia (16-41). Expect one of RHPs Stiven Cruz, Edwin Jimenez or Israel Puello to start in the opening game. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Cancelled Due to Covid Safety Measures (Will Not Be Rescheduled) Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, rainout details: Sunday’s Timber Rattlers Game at Beloit Canceled Wisconsin was poised to grab a 3-3 series split with a victory in the finale, but never got the chance due to cancellation based on Covid concerns. Next week’s outlook: The 33-23 Timber Rattlers remain on the road to take on Dodgers’ High-A affiliate Great Lakes (33-24). Expect LHP Russell Smith (5 2/3 IP, 2 runs, 8 Ks last outing) to start the opener after missing his chance to throw today. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 5, Tennessee 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Walk Off Smokies for Second Time in Series Finale This was the only competitive game for the Brewers’ minor league affiliates, but Biloxi and Chattanooga gave us a doozy. Starter TJ Shook shrugged off a leadoff homer (INF Chase Stumpf’s 12th of the year) to prevent any more damage over the first four innings, though there was a bit of traffic (stranded two runners in each of the 2nd and 3rd innings). Biloxi responded in a big way in that same first inning, with a two-run Jakson Reetz double and RBI singles by Tristen Lutz and Cam Devanney giving the team a 4-1 lead. Shook’s 5th inning should have been straightforward, in spite of a leadoff walk. This was followed by a strikeout, high fly ball to left field and a grounder to first base. Unfortunately, that fly ball got caught in the lights (Lutz couldn’t see it) and the grounder somehow eluded both Noah Campbell at first base and Joey Wiemer in right field, giving the Smokies a lifeline. RHP Robbie Hitt entered the 4-2 game, with two on and one out, but a Reetz throwing error allowed both inherited runners to score. Shuckers 4, Smokies 4 – all to play for. To his credit, Hitt retired five consecutive batters, then handed over to RHP Arnaldo Hernandez. Hernandez pitched a clean 7th inning, but faced serious trouble with consecutive walks and a wild pitch to commence the 8th inning. However, he pulled a great escape, getting a harmless ground out and then an unconventional double play (left field to shortstop to double up the runner at 2nd base) to keep things even. RHP Vennaro entered to cover the 9th inning and more, working around a leadoff walk in the 9th inning and then retiring the next six batters in order. Offensively, Biloxi put two players on base in the 6th inning (single, error), had a leadoff 7th inning walk, a leadoff 8th inning double (Reetz) and a one-out 9th inning walk, but couldn’t convert any of the chances. On any other night, they’d be ruing the missed opportunities, but not this evening. Gifted with Manfred’s ghost (in the form of pinch-runner Terence Doston) on 2nd base to start the bottom of the 10th inning, Mr. Lutz made sure to end it immediately, smacking the game-winning single to left field. Performances of Note: Jakson Reetz – 2-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs Tristen Lutz – 2-5, 2 RBIs Sal Frelick – 2-5 Cam Devanney – 1-3, walk, RBI Joey Wiemer – 1-4, SB TJ Shook – 4 1/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 6 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks Robbie Hitt – 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks Arnaldo Hernandez – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 1 K Zach Vennaro (Win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 26-29 Shuckers will bus to Reds’ AA affiliate Chattanooga (30-27). Expect promising LHP Brandon Knarr (6 IP, 1 run, 8 Ks in his AA debut last week) to handle the series opener. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Norfolk 7, Nashville 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Drop Finale, Lose Six-Game Series to Norfolk The Sounds needed a win at home in the finale to salvage a 3-3 series split against Norfolk, but it was not to be on this day. The Tides’ bats were active, with eight hits scoring five runs over the first four innings of the game against Nashville starting RHP Dylan File. OF Corey Ray managed to double and score in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but a three-run 4th inning put the Sounds back on their heels down 5-1. A Pablo Reyes double and Mario Feliciano RBI single had them back in business down 5-2 with one out in the 4th inning, but old friend Marcos Diplan came on in relief to eliminate the threat and earn the win. Feliciano was the bright spot for Nashville, reaching base three times as he continues to prove his offensive capability (now hitting .301 on the season, though waiting for the power to come through). The game also marked a return to AAA for RHP Luke Barker after recently being optioned from the Big Club. Performances of Note: Mario Feliciano – 2-3, double, walk, RBI Corey Ray – 1-4, double Pablo Reyes – 1-4, double Jonathan Davis – 1-3, walk Abraham Almonte – 1-3, walk Dylan File (Loss) – 4 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks Alec Bettinger – 4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 2 H, 4 BB, 5 Ks Luke Barker – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: Nashville (36-23) will be away this week to battle Cardinals’ AAA affiliate Memphis (35-25). Expect dominant LHP Ethan Small (2.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 41 innings) to start the series opener. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Enjoy your travel day, young fellas! Stiven Cruz (Game One) and Jackson Chourio (Game Two) led Carolina to two tight victories over first place Myrtle Beach. Ryne Moore had his first terrific start in Wisconsin and Cam Robinson closed out the 3-1 win in Beloit. Wiemer, Frelick & Co. followed Biloxi’s recent script of dominating the game, only to unfortunately lose it late 10-9. Nashville continued its recent rough patch, losing two tight contests at home against Norfolk. The short seasons squads won three of their four games. Step-up performances by starting pitchers Stiven Cruz, Edwin Jimenez, Ryne Moore and Jared Albir helped lead the Brewers’ minor league affiliates to four of their six victories on the night. Jackson Chourio’s hitting and on-base streaks were a casualty of a shortened seven-inning game, so he responded by nearly hitting for the cycle in a 3-for-3 second game (single, homer, triple). In Biloxi, Joey Wiemer did a little bit of everything, showing reaching base four times and stealing three bases, before being picked off base for the second last out of their frustrating 10-9 loss. Game Balls for this Thursday night go to Moore, Chourio, Jimenez, Wiemer and David Dahl. Transactions: Signed INF Jean Carmona and assigned to DSL Brewers1 Placed RHP Thomas Jankins on AAA Nashville’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Carolina 3, Myrtle Beach 2 Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Carolina 2, Myrtle Beach 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mudcats Sweep Pelicans in Thursday’s Doubleheader The 2022 Carolina Mudcats continue to prove their mettle, coming back from a tough loss on Wednesday night to sweep Thursday’s doubleheader against a tough Myrtle Beach squad. In the opener, Carolina grabbed an early 3-0 lead via RBI singles from Jeferson Quero and Hedbert Perez in the first inning, then Jose Sibrian doubling in the second inning and scoring on a balk. On the mound, RHP Stiven Cruz was his usual strong self, escaping a first inning two-on, one-out situation (shallow fly out, ground out) and only conceding a two-run homer in the 3rd inning to tighten the contest. Credit to RHP Brannon Jordan for a clean 6th inning (ground out, two Ks) and LHP Karlos Morales for locking down the save in spite of two two-out singles in the final inning. Unfortunately, Jackson Chourio’s streaks (13 hitting, 21 on-base) had to end in the short seven-inning Game One affair, but it turned out he was simply saving his heroics for Game Two. In the second game, RHP Edwin Jimenez had his best performance of the year, throwing five shutout innings and only allowing three hitters to reach base (two singles, a hit batsman, zero walks). As for Chourio, he nearly hit for the cycle in leading the Mudcat offense: First inning single Fourth inning solo homer to give Carolina a 1-0 lead Sixth inning triple The Mudcats added a necessary insurance run in the 4th inning, thanks to some serious hustle and a little help from the Pelicans: Jeferson Quero walked, stole second and scored on a throwing error. RHP Israel Puello pitched a clean 6th inning in relief, before conceding a run in the final inning on two walks and a single, thankfully retiring the final batter on a first-pitch fly out to right field. Performances of Note (Game One): Hendry Mendez – 2-3 Jeferson Quero – 1-3, RBI Jose Sibrian – 1-3, double Eduardo Garcia – 1-3, SB Stiven Cruz (Win) – 5 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks Brannon Jordan – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Karlos Morales (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks Performances of Note (Game Two): Jackson Chourio – 3-3, HR, triple, RBI Jeferson Quero – 1-2, walk, SB Edwin Jimenez (Win) – 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks Israel Puello (Save) – 2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 balk, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: Carolina now leads the series 2-1 and will throw its best at the opposition today in RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez (3.90 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 12.0 K/9 in 32 1/3 innings). Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 3, Beloit 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Get Moore in 3-1 Win at Beloit After struggling through his first four starts since promotion to High-A, RHP Ryne Moore finally gave Wisconsin what they were expecting. And More! Coming off two losses in Beloit, with the offense struggling of recent, Moore dazzled with seven innings of two-hit, seven-K ball. Of course, it likely helped that the Timber Rattlers brought in three runs in the 2nd inning on an Ethan Murray homer (4th of the year) and RBI doubles by Jose Acosta (the new guy keeps contributing!) and Tristan Peters (10th double of the year). Beloit grabbed a run in the 7th inning to close the gap to 3-1, before hitting a one-out triple off RHP Joey Matulovich in the 8th inning to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate. Matulovich ably escaped that threat (shallow fly out, strike out), before handing over to ace closer RHP Cam Robinson. Robinson struck out three of four hitters to earn his 12th save of the season. Performances of Note: Ethan Murray – 1-4, HR, RBI Tristan Peters – 1-2, double, 2 walks, RBI Jose Acosta – 1-3, double, walk, RBI Wes Clarke – 1-3, double, walk Joe Gray Jr. – 1-4, SB Ryne Moore (Win) – 7 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 7 Ks Joey Matulovich – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Cam Robinson (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: Wisconsin seeks a win today to knot the series at 2-2, though the starting pitcher is not yet known after LHP Brandon Knarr’s recent promotion. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Tennessee 10, Biloxi 9 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Wild Back-And-Forth Affair Ends In 10-9 Smokies Victory Over Biloxi There were lots of fireworks in Biloxi, with the teams combining for 19 runs on 22 hits, whilst leaving 20 men-on-base. Unfortunately, these kinds of games tend to come down to which bullpen is able to eventually stop the bleeding and that’s not exactly been the Shuckers’ strength of late. Despite falling behind 3-0 in the first inning as the Smokies tallied three hits and two walks against starting RHP Noah Zavolas, the Shuckers grabbed leads of 4-3 (fourth inning) and 7-4 (sixth inning) through a hitting barrage, highlighted by a Sal Frelick solo homer (2nd in Biloxi), Tristen Lutz RBI single, Joey Wiemer RBI single and Jakson Reetz two-run double. However, the game went awry in the 7th inning, as RHP Taylor Floyd could not find the zone, walking three batters, beaning one and ultimately being charged with four earned runs in spite of not conceding a hit. RHP Nash Walters entered, but was not able to stem the tide, throwing a run-scoring wild pitch and then giving up a three-run homer for a 9-7 deficit. The Shuckers didn’t give up, with 1B Thomas Dillard doubling home two runners in the bottom half of the 7th inning to tie it back up 9-9. However, Tennessee put the first three batters on base in the top of the 9th inning against RHP Robbie Hitt, who ultimately did well to limit them to one run. Wiemer tried to spark a final rally with a one-out single in the 9th inning, but was unfortunately picked off, as he was itching for his 4th stolen base on the game. Wiemer argued his case, but was ejected from the 10-9 defeat. Performances of Note: Sal Frelick – 3-6, HR, double, RBI Joey Wiemer – 3-5, double, walk, RBI, 3 SBs Cam Devanney – 2-3, 2 walks, SB Jakson Reetz – 1-4, double, walk, 3 RBIs Thomas Dillard – 1-4, double, 2 walks, 2 RBIs, SB Tristen Lutz – 1-3, walk, sac fly, 2 RBIs Jason Lopez – 1-4, double, walk Noah Zavolas – 6 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 6 Ks Robbie Hitt (Loss) – 2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K Friday’s outlook: Biloxi trails their series 2-1 and RHP Carlos Luna (4.42 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 36 1/3 innings) is scheduled to make his 6th start (11th appearance) as they strive to tie it up. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Final: Norfolk 5, Nashville 4 Box Score / Game Log Game Two Final: Norfolk 5, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Swept by Norfolk in Doubleheader Nashville’s recent struggles continued in two close losses at home to Norfolk, with RHP Josh Lindblom having his 3rd straight difficult start, conceding three runs on two homers (including one to old friend Jacob Nottingham) in the first inning of the opener. To his credit, Lindblom settled in to cover five innings, yielding only one more run to exit with a 4-3 deficit. Jonathan Davis and David Dahl did everything in their power to bring the Sounds back into the game, each homering, doubling and driving in a combined four runs. However, with Davis representing the tying run on 3rd base with one out in the 9th inning, Nashville was unable to bring him home. The second Sounds-Tides game of the day was essentially a repeat of the first, with Norfolk jumping out to a 5-2 lead by the 4th inning, though this time keeping the ball in the park with seven hits against RHP Tyler Herb, who completed the initial five innings. Unfortunately, there was no stirring comeback for Nashville from there, registering no hits over the final three innings of the Game Two loss. Notably, RHP Lucas Erceg made his AAA debut in the 7th inning, hitting triple digits on the radar gun as he struck out three Tides’ batters. Reminder: Don’t test Brice Turang’s arm: Another defensive gem here: Performances of Note (Game One): Jonathan Davis – 2-4, HR, double, 2 RBIs David Dahl – 2-3, HR, double, 2 RBIs Jon Singleton – 1-3, double, walk Corey Ray – 1-3, double Brice Turang – 1-4, SB Mario Feliciano – 1-3 Josh Lindblom (Loss) – 5 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BBs, 1 HBP, 5 Ks Peter Strzelecki – 2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks Performances of Note (Game Two): Garrett Whitley – 1-3, double, RBI Brian Navarreto – 1-3, RBI David Dahl – 1-3 Tyler Herb (Loss) – 5 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 7 H, 2 BB, 7 Ks Hobie Harris – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks Lucas Erceg – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: Nashville trails 3-0 in this week’s series and turns to RHP Caleb Boushley (3.53 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 6.6 K/9 in 58 2/3 innings) to start the fourth game today. Final: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Cubs 3 Box Score / Game Log Brewers Blue notched its first win of 2022, coming back from an 8th inning deficit of 3-1 to score the six runs of the game. RHPs Jared Albir and Samuel Dario kept their team in the game by striking out nine batters over 7 1/3 innings, giving up only one run and four hits. To his credit, Albir also picked off two baserunners. The team took its first lead on a wild pitch in the 9th inning, then added three more runs on balks in the same inning. Performances of Note: Daniel Guilarte – 2-5, double, RBI Jace Avina – 2-5, HR, RBI Jared Albir – 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 1 balk, 4 Ks Samuel Dario (Win) – 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 5 Ks Final: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Reds 3 Box Score / Game Log The ACL Gold squad remain unbeaten (3-0), using long balls by Jesus Parra (three-run homer to take a 3-2 lead) and Luis Castillo (solo shot), while the pitchers worked around traffic throughout the shortened seven-inning contest. The Reds stranded nine runners, while Brewers Gold only stranded one. Brewers’ 12-round draft pick, 18-year old 6’6” left handed Caden Vire made his organizational debut, starting and covering 2 1/3 innings while striking out two batters. Performances of Note: Luis Castillo – 2-3, HR, RBI Jesus Parra – 1-3, HR, 3 RBIs Final: DSL Brewers2 12, DSL Rangers Red 10 Box Score / Game Log The Brewers2 squad registered double-digit hits for the third straight game, this time brushing off deficits of 6-0 (3rd inning) and 9-4 (6th inning) to storm back for a 12-10 win. 1B/OF Yeison Perez (18-year old left-handed hitter) smacked 2 home runs, including the game-winning 3-run shot with 2 outs in the 6th inning to give the team their first lead at 12-9. Performances of Note: Reminton Batista – 3-5, double, RBI, SB Yeison Perez – 2-5, 2 HRs, 4 RBIs Jamal Zalm – 2-4, double, BB, 2 RBIs Eric Martinez – 2-4, triple, double Final: DSL Phillies White 6, DSL Brewers1 5 Box Score / Game Log Brewers1 outhit Phillies White 8-to-4, but the opposition actually had more traffic on the bases due to walks, hit-by-pitches and errors. 17-year old $1.1 million signee OF Luis Lara looks the part thus far – 5-for-12, hitting safely in all three games. Jackson Chourio provided most the offense in Carolina’s 6-3 win, with Carlos F. Rodriguez shutting the door with 4 scoreless innings. Justin Jarvis pitched Wisconsin to a series-tying victory. Biloxi once again led most of their game, before inventing a new way to lose (3 ninth inning runs on zero hits). Nashville lost its first series of the season, failing to match Durham’s clutch hitting. In Sunday’s finales, three fine pitching performances very nearly resulted in three victories, though Biloxi’s generous bullpen narrowed it to a 2-win, 2-loss day for the Brewers’ MILB affiliates. In Lynchburg, the combination of Jackson Chourio (HR, 3 RBIs) and Carlos F. Rodriguez (4 shutout innings, 8 Ks) was too much for the Hillcats. In Pensacola, Sal Frelick, Felix Valerio and Nick Bennett put the Shuckers firmly in charge (6-1 lead mid-way; 6-4 entering the 9th inning), though Biloxi’s bullpen was once again unable to hold the lead, losing their 5th one-run game of the week. At home against Peoria, Justin Jarvis (6 innings, 1 run, 3 hits) didn’t require much offensive support, but received it anyway with home runs by Zavier Warren, Ashton McGee and Alex Hall, enabling Wisconsin to split the series 3-3. In Durham, Nashville only managed to score 1 run despite a few early opportunities, whilst the Bulls made the most of their chances. Durham’s bullpen was exceptional, retiring the final 14 Sounds of the game in dropping Nashville to its first series loss of 2022. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Chourio, Jarvis, Rodriguez, Bennett and Frelick. Chourio also singled and scored in the 4th inning to restore the 2-run lead at 3-1. RHP Alexander Cornielle bravely fought through traffic over 5 innings of work, conceding an unearned run in the 3rd inning, then a home run, walk and RBI single in the 4th inning as the Hillcats knotted up the game 3-3. The entrance RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez in relief in the bottom of the 6th inning had to give the Mudcats a shot of confidence. Still 3-3 in the 8th inning, it was Jackson Chourio once again who came through, plating Jheremy Vargas (who’d walked) and Luis Silva (who’d singled) with a 1-out, 2-run single to enable Carolina to re-take the lead at 5-3. OF Oswal Leones then added another run with an RBI double in the 9th inning for good measure. As to Rodriguez, he faced the minimum number of hitters (9) through 3 innings of work, then had to work out of a 2-on, 1-out situation in the 9th. Of course, he cleaned it up nicely, striking out the final two batters on 7 pitches. Jarvis was excellent as usual, conceding only 1 run and 3 hits over 6 solid innings of work. That run came via a triple-single combination to start off the second inning, after which the Chiefs did not manage even a single hit over Jarvis’ next 5 innings. The tight 1-1 affair didn’t open up until 1B Ashton McGee’s solo homer to lead off the bottom of the 5th inning. It’s wonderful to see McGee put his miserable start to 2022 far in the review mirror. That’s his second dinger of the year (first in Wisconsin) and he’s now sporting a 7-game hitting streak. Furthermore, he recorded zero strikeouts for the 3rd straight game. In the 7th inning, highly effective RHP Joey Matulovich picked up where Jarvis left off, before C Alex Hall blasted a 2-run homer (bringing home OF Arbert Cipion, who’d singled) to stretch Wisconsin’s lead to 4-1. Combined, Matulovich and RHP James Meeker covered the final 3 scoreless innings, only allowing 2 harmless singles. Oh, and pesky 2B Jose Acosta (recently acquired from Texas) looks like a keeper, singling and scoring via wild pitch in the 8th inning to put the finishing touch on the 5-1 scoreline. He now has a 5-game hitting streak (3 with Wisconsin, 2 from prior club). Losing a 5th one-run game of the week is extremely painful. Keep your heads up men! There are certainly better days ahead. In this contest, Biloxi shook off the disappointment of a failure to cash in on a first inning, bases loaded situation to jump out to leads of 3-0 and 6-1 on the strength of 2-run blasts by OF Sal Frelick (2nd inning – his first since his promotion to AA) and 2B Felix Valerio (4th inning). On the mound, LHP Nick Bennett put together a solid performance, conceding 2 runs on 3 hits over 4 2/3 innings. Unlike Saturday’s contest, when Biloxi appeared out of bullpen arms as RHP Taylor Floyd struggled in an attempted 2nd inning of work, Manager Guerrero employed something of a quick hook in this game, well at least until the fateful 9th inning: RHP Nash Walters pitched to just 2 batters, closing out the 5th inning to retain the Shuckers’ 6-2 lead RHP Carlos Luna threw 60 pitches to get through 2 2/3 innings, though that included 2 runs to tighten the game at 6-4 in the 8th inning RHP Arnaldo Hernandez picked up Luna nicely, striking out the only batter he faced to strand a runner at 3rd base Of course, in line with the theme of the week, Biloxi essentially laid down in the 9th inning, generously allowing 6 Blue Wahoo batters to reach base without even managing a single hit. Sunday’s nightmare experience went to RHP Harold Chirino, who’ll want to forget the walk and then 4 consecutive hit batsmen to end the contest in favor of Pensacola at 7-6. Performances of Note: Gabe Holt – 3-4, RBI Sal Frelick – 2-5, HR, double, 2 RBIs Felix Valerio – 1-3, HR, walk, HBP, 2 RBIs, SB Cam Devanney – 1-4, double, SF, RBI Jakson Reetz – 1-4, double, walk Tristen Lutz – 1-4, walk Nick Bennett – 4 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 7 Ks Carlos Luna – 2 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K Harold Chirino (Loss) – 0 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 0 H, 1 BB, 4 HBP, 0 K Next week’s outlook: The 23-36 Shuckers are home this week, seeking to turn over a new leaf as they face the 29-22 Tennessee Smokies. However, Sunday’s defeat was actually more a matter of Durham simply cashing in on the few opportunities which came its way. For the game, the Sounds went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position (leaving 5 men on base), while Durham went 2-for-4 in the same position (leaving only 2 men on base in the game). Credit Durham for their clutch hitting and pitching, then try again next week gentlemen! Despite OFs Jonathan Davis and Abraham Almonte putting Nashville in strong position with a first inning single and double, they were left stranded, while Durham went the easy route via solo homer by Jonathan Aranda (his 9th of the year) in the bottom half of the inning. Almonte then tied things up with an RBI single in the 3rd inning, but that’s the only run the Sounds would manage to bring home this day. A double and RBI single gave the Bulls a 2-1 lead against starting RHP Dylan File in the same inning. This lead was extended to 4-1 in File’s final inning of work (the 6th inning) via an infield single, full-count walk, base hit and steal of home. Credit to Durham for retiring the final 14 Nashville batters of the game. Unfortunately, the loss meant a 4-2 series defeat for the Sounds, their first series loss of 2022. Performances of Note: Abraham Almonte – 2-4, double, RBI Jonathan Davis – 1-3, walk, SB Brian Navarreto – 1-3 Dylan File (Loss) – 6 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks Peter Strzelecki – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Zach Vennaro – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K Next week’s outlook: Nashville (34-19) return home after their 2-week road trip, aiming to get back to their winning ways as they host 26-28 Norfolk. The Brewers’ full season affiliates added a victory-filled May (60 wins, 41 losses) to their super April (50 wins, 33 losses). Wisconsin’s Cam Robinson (seven saves, 0.00 ERA) is the clear award winner for relief pitcher, while the starting pitcher and top hitter awards could have gone any number of ways. The choices here are Carolina’s Carlos F. Rodriguez for 2.01 ERA-ball and 30 strikeouts over six games and Abraham Almonte, who hit six dingers and registered an OPS of 1.154 for Nashville. Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Month: RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez – Low-A Carolina Entering the month of May with an ERA of 13.50 after the first three appearances of his MILB career, we can all be forgiven for not realizing that the 20-year old Rodriguez was about to flip the switch which would have certain Brewer Fanatics putting him in their Top 20 Prospect List just a few weeks later. The 2021 6th round pick out of JUCO ball (Florida Southwestern State College), who didn’t actually play minor league baseball in his draft year, made six long appearances (including three starts) in the month of May, averaging 55 pitches per outing. In a 180-degree turnaround from his April work, the native Nicaraguan never allowed more than four baserunners in any outing and was only tagged for extra base hits three times in 76 at-bats. Let’s let Rodriguez' May numbers speak for themselves: ERA: 2.01 (second among Brewer MILB starters) WHIP: 0.76 (tops among Brewer MILB starters) K/9: 12.1 – 30 in 22 1/3 innings AVG: .171 OPS: .485 Win-Loss: 0-0 Saves: 1 Wait, no wins or losses but one save?! Well, that’s what happens when you pitch four innings in pretty much every contest. The save was earned via four innings of shutout work in a 13-0 Carolina victory, in which the score was actually 2-0 during the first two innings which Rodriguez pitched. While RHP Miguel Segura had initially caught my eye as the youngest pitcher on the Mudcats, the reality is that the squad has five exciting 20-year old longmen: Segura, Edwin Jimenez, Rodriguez, Stiven Cruz and Alexander Cornielle. Of those, only Rodriguez was drafted ($250,000 signing bonus) and all are from Latin America (two Nicaraguans, two Venezuelans, one Dominican). {Insert Picture - see attached} Carolina Mudcats pitcher Carlos Rodriguez delivers during a game May 19 at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. (Brett Friedlander / North State Journal) After his breakout month of May, don’t be surprised if Carlos F. Rodriguez is the leader of the Young Mudcat Guns going forward. Way to go, Carlos!! Other Top Starting Pitchers in May 2022 LHP Brandon Knarr – High-A Wisconsin Knarr continued his terrific season by winning all five of his May starts and posting the top ERA amongst among Brewer MILB starters in the month (1.55), concluding the first two months with a minuscule 1.58 ERA, 7-1 record and 60 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings pitched. Wait, Knarr was robbed! Is this discrimination against a non-draftee (the five-round 2020 MLB draft due to Covid likely cost Mr. Knarr a better signing bonus out of the University of Tampa). Is it ageism against the now-24 year old (birthday on June 2)? The margin of victory for these monthly awards is tight and this writer docked him slightly for the old peripherals – 1.14 WHIP in a pitching league (1.29 average Midwest League WHIP in May) and a relatively low 37% ground ball rate amongst batted balls. Knarr’s May numbers ERA: 1.55 (first amongst Brewer MILB starters) WHIP: 1.14 K/9: 12.4 – 33 in 29 innings (first amongst Brewer MILB starters) AVG: .243 OPS: .595 Win-Loss: 5-0 RHP Jason Alexander – AAA Nashville After a respectable April (2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 3-1 record), I was still reserving judgment on account of Alexander’s 5.4 K/9 rate and the fact that he’d only pitched 19 2/3 innings in the 2021 season. However, 29-year old Jason Alexander has proven to be an extremely effective ground ball pitcher (64% of batted balls over two months; 68% in May), improving upon all of his April stats over the past month while notching another three wins. As an awesome reward, Mr. Alexander was promoted to Milwaukee on June 1st for his first-ever big league call-up. Alexanders’ May numbers ERA: 2.60 WHIP: 0.94 K/9: 6.8 – 21 in 27 2/3 innings AVG: .196 OPS: .563 Win-Loss: 3-1 LHP Antoine Kelly – High-A Wisconsin When former 2nd round draft pick Antoine Kelly is on, opposing hitters at the High-A level can only flail away and hope a few balls drop in. This month, he was totally locked in for two games, only-dominant for another two games and then human in his 5th start: First start: 5 IP, no runs, 10 strikeouts – no decision Next two starts: 12 IP, 3 runs (2 earned), 7 strikeouts – both no decisions Fourth start: 5 2/3 IP, 0 runs if life were fair (though 3 came across via dumb Cub luck), 13 strikeouts – no decision Last start: 4 2/3 IP, 6 runs (5 earned), 7 strikeouts – loss One has to believe the 22-year old Kelly is a promotion candidate in the near future. Kelly’s May numbers ERA: 3.29 WHIP: 0.95 K/9: 12.2 – 37 in 27 1/3 innings AVG: .167 OPS: .503 Win-Loss: 0-1 Honourable Mentions: LHP Andy Otero (2.13 ERA, 1.07 WHIP), RHP Victor Castaneda (1.17 WHIP, 12.0 K/9), RHP Stiven Cruz (1.18 WHIP, 13.9 K/9), RHP Dylan File (2.86 ERA, 1.05 WHIP), Justin Jarvis (2.73 ERA, 10.6 K/9) Checking in on Last Month’s Winner: LHP Ethan Small – AAA Nashville Ethan Small continued his solid AAA work and was also rewarded with his first-even promotion to Milwaukee, though returned back to Nashville after the game: AAA in May: 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 10.8 K/9 in 15 innings MLB in May: 6.75 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 13.5 K/9 in 2 2/3 innings Minor League Hitter for the Month: OF Abraham Almonte of AAA Nashville Most visitors to the minor league portion of this website probably follow along closely enough to know that the AAA Nashville Sounds continued their winning ways throughout the month of May (17-8 for the month, after a 16-7 April), but possibly make assumptions when it comes to the underlying key contributors. Let’s be clear: Outfielder Abraham Almonte was the Sounds’ top offensive performer this month and in fact was the top Brewers’ hitter across the minor league system. Sure, there’s the six home runs, 14 RBIs and 1.154 OPS for the month, but one stat stands out above the rest: a .723 slugging percentage, which was 82 points above any other player (Catcher Jakson Reetz - .641) in the Brewers’ system for the month. Let’s review the 32-year old, switch-hitting Almonte’s numbers during May 2022: Slash: .298 AVG / .431 OBP / .723 SLG OPS: 1.154 (56.8% above the International League average) Hitting: 14-for-47 Home runs: 6 Extra base hits: 8 RBIs: 14 Runs scored: 14 Walks + HBP vs. Strikeouts: 11 vs. 12 The principal blemish on his month was that he missed the first dozen days due to injury, so only played in 12 games. However, he made up for that gap in a big way. After easing back in over his first five games (4-for-19 with 3 walks), it was all fireworks for Mr. Almonte from there: May 21: 3-for-4, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 9 total bases May 26: 2-for-5, 3 total bases May 27: 1-for-4, home run, 2 RBIs, 4 total bases May 28: 1-for-4, home run, 3 RBIs, 4 total bases May 29: 2-for-4, home run, 2 RBIs, 6 total bases May 30: 1-for-3, home run, RBI, 4 total bases Playing full-time in AAA as a corner outfielder at 32 years old can obviously make one wonder whether Major League Baseball is still in the cards for Abraham Almonte, so it’s worth noting that he’s seen time in the majors every year for the past nine seasons, including 175 plate appearances (.730 OPS) in 2021 with World Series champ Atlanta. Coupled with his current form, you can bet that Mr. Almonte has his eye on a return to The Show.Other Top Hitters in May 2022 OF Arbert Cipion – Low-A Carolina Although 18-year old super-prospect Jackson Chourio is rightfully garnering all the headlines these days, 22-year old Arbert Cipion was actually the Mudcats’ top hitter during the month of May, which the squad truly needed after the promotions of OF Micah Bello (May 3) and RHP Ryne Moore (May 12). And just like that, the 2018 9th round pick was rewarded for his excellent month with a promotion to High-A Wisconsin on June 2nd. Cipion’s May numbers Slash: .358 AVG / .469 OBP / .582 SLG OPS: 1.051 OPS (50.8% above the Carolina League average) Hitting: 24-for-67 Home runs: 3 Extra base hits: 7 RBIs: 9 Runs scored: 18 Walks + HBP vs. Strikeouts: 14 vs. 14 OF Tristan Peters – High-A Wisconsin If we’re being honest, most of us had Tristan Peters pegged to start the season at Low-A Carolina and didn’t necessarily even believe the initial 2022 posting at High-A Wisconsin would stick. To be fair to us, a 7th round draft selection in 2021 with a $147,500 signing bonus who put up a .737 OPS in the Arizona Complex League (55 plate appearances) doesn’t exactly scream Skip Low-A Ball. But the 22-year old left-handed hitting Peters can simply play, coupling with INF Tyler Black as the most dependable bats the Timber Rattlers have through two months of the 2022 campaign. Tristan’s .774 OPS in April was certainly no fluke, as he proved with a tremendous May. Peters’ May numbers Slash: .319 AVG / .405 OBP / .596 SLG OPS: 1.001 OPS (43.4% above the Midwest League average) Hitting: 30-for-94 Home runs: 3 Extra base hits: 15 RBIs: 15 Runs scored: 23 Walks + HBP vs. Strikeouts: 15 vs. 13 C Jakson Reetz – AA Biloxi Similar to Peters, Jakson Reetz also demonstrated that his surprising April (1.041 OPS in 44 plate appearances) was not a flash-in-the-pan. Having hit free agency from the Washington Nationals for the first time at the conclusion of the 2021 season, the Brewers can count their lucky stars (or proudly puff out their chests) that they inked this intriguing 26-year old to a minor league contract. Reetz’ May numbers Slash: .281 AVG / .425 OBP / .641 SLG OPS: 1.066 OPS (37.5% above the Southern League average) Hitting: 18-for-64 Home runs: 7 Extra base hits: 9 RBIs: 15 Runs scored: 16 Walks + HBP vs. Strikeouts: 16 vs. 22 INF Tyler Black – High-A Wisconsin Being the 33rd overall pick of the 2021 draft, 21-year old left-handed hitting Tyler Black is honestly doing what we expect, while thankfully proving that last season’s .660 OPS at Low-A Carolina (103 plate appearances) was nothing to worry about. Is a promotion to AA Biloxi on the cards? Black’s May numbers Slash: .301 AVG / .416 OBP / .518 SLG OPS: .934 OPS (33.8% above the Midwest League average) Hitting: 25-for-83 Home runs: 4 Extra base hits: 8 RBIs: 13 Runs scored: 19 Walks + HBP vs. Strikeouts: 17 vs. 18 Honorable Mentions: INF Mark Mathias in AAA (.971 OPS), C Brent Diaz in AA (.609 SLG), OF Jackson Chourio in Low-A (33 hits, 17 RBIs), OF Carlos D. Rodriguez in High-A (8 doubles), INF/OF Pablo Reyes in AAA (.913 OPS), OF Joey Wiemer in AA (9 homers), OF Tristen Lutz in AA (.945 OPS), C Mario Feliciano in AAA (.400 AVG) Checking in on Last Month’s Winner: OF Micah Bello – Low-A Carolina (since promoted): After carrying Low-A Carolina offensively in April (.994 OPS, 13 RBIs), the 21-year old Bello was deservedly promoted to High-A Wisconsin on May 3, though there’s some initial struggle: High-A in May: .167 AVG / .239 OBP / .286 SLG in 47 plate appearances Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Month: RHP Cam Robinson of High-A Wisconsin Most of these decisions are difficult, but thankfully not this one. Cam Robinson registered a whopping seven saves in the month of May (next highest: Zach Vennaro with two) and didn’t yield any runs over 16 innings of work. Let’s see Robinson's eye-popping May numbers: ERA: 0.00 ERA WHIP: 0.63 K/9: 10.7 – 19 in 16 innings AVG: .100 OPS: .336 Win-Loss: 0-0 Saves: 7 Thanks to @CMehring & @byKyleLobner’s podcast, we can listen to Cam’s deep insight into what’s working so well for him at the moment: scroll to 9:21. Between the solid strikeout rate and a groundball rate of 78% of batted balls during the month, opposing offenses proved futile against the 2017 23rd round draft pick (signing bonus not noted – i.e. pitifully low). Let’s revel in those saves a bit: May 4: Preserved 2-run lead. Faced 6 batters, recording 6 outs May 7: Preserved 3-run lead. Stranded 2 inherited runners. Faced 7 batters, recording 6 outs May 11: Preserved 1-run lead. Faced 7 batters, recording 6 outs May 14: Preserved 1-run lead: Faced 7 batters, recording 6 outs May 17: Preserved 2-run lead. Faced 3 batters, recording 3 outs May 29: Preserved 2-run lead. Faced 6 batters, recording 3 outs May 31: Preserved 1-run lead. Faced 3 batters, recording 3 outs Man, I bet AA Biloxi can’t wait to get access to Mr. Robinson’s services. Just 22 years old, Cam Robinson has found his niche and is determined to take it all the way to the top. Other Top Relief Pitchers in May 2022 RHP Michele Vassalotti – Low-A Carolina After a promising 2018 season as a 17-year old in Arizona, Michele Vassalotti endured some trying times from 2019-2021 and faced a shift to full-time bullpen work at Low-A Carolina in 2022. Well, the bullpen (supported by his strong mental game and improved fitness) obviously suits him, as evidenced by his 1.64 ERA, .128 batting average against, 7-0 win-loss record and three saves through two months of 2022. Still just 21 years old, the Venezuelan Vassalotti appears ready for promotion to High-A Wisconsin and has many more years of terrific baseball ahead of him. Vassalotti’s May numbers ERA: 0.82 WHIP: 0.45 K/9: 11.5 – 14 in 11 innings AVG: .105 OPS: .402 Win-Loss: 5-0 Saves: 1 RHP Kent Hasler – High-A Wisconsin Undrafted out of Louisiana Tech in 2018, Kent Hasler dominated in three seasons of independent ball before the Brewers had the good fortune to sign him in May 2021. After registering a 3.07 ERA and 16.4 K/9 in 44 innings in 2021 (mostly at Low-A Carolina), the 26-year old Hasler continues to wreak havoc in 2022, this time against High-A opposition. Through two months, his 1.04 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 13.5 K/9 and .159 batting average against are all pretty strong signs that Hasler’s ready to face a more advanced challenge. Speak of the angel: Kent Hasler was promoted to AAA Nashville on June 4th. Hasler’s May numbers ERA: 0.71 WHIP: 0.95 K/9: 14.9 – 21 in 12 2/3 innings AVG: .152 OPS: .409 Win-Loss: 3-0 Saves: 0 Honourable Mentions: RHP Junior Montero (0.00 ERA, 11.3 K/9), RHP Joey Matulovich (0.77 ERA, 0.60 WHIP), RHP Connor Sadzeck (1.13 ERA, 12.4 K/9), RHP Zach Vennaro (1.00 WHIP, 2 saves), LHP Pablo Garabitos (1.00 WHIP, 12.0 K/9), RHP Luis Contreras (0.84 ERA, 11.0 K/9), RHP Harold Chirino (1.38 ERA, 0.69 WHIP) Checking in on Last Month’s Winner: RHP Peter Strzelecki – AAA Nashville Mr. Strzelecki was inconsistent in his 6 AAA relief appearances, reverting to the mean a bit AAA in May: 7.04 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, 17.6 K/9 in 7 2/3 innings However, seeing his overall strong performance, Peter had his contract selected by the Brewers on May 30th to reach the major leagues for the first time. Thank you all for reading and following our minor league heroes at Brewer Fanatic. Do you agree with the selections for May? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Eight extra base hits powered Biloxi to a 10-7 victory, including 5 RBIs from the surprising Doston-Coca-Campbell combination. Unfortunately, Nashville gave up 9 runs on 6 homers in a 9-7 loss, while Wisconsin’s offense failed to show up in a 4-0 defeat. Carolina grabbed an 8th inning lead, but a rain delay means they’ll need to finish on Friday. Thursday night featured strong performances from some of the usual suspects (homers from Jackson Chourio, Mark Mathias and Tristen Lutz; Brandon Knarr 1-run over 6 innings of work), encouraging signs from Stiven Cruz and Jeferson Quero, a rare off night by the usually-stout Josh Lindblom and then surprising contributions from Terence Doston, Yeison Coca, Noah Campbell and Garrett Whitley. Hopefully, the Mudcats can finish off their rain-delayed contest on Friday (they lead 5-2), thus enabling the Brewers' MILB squads to call this a 2-2 night. And Wisconsin had better rediscover its offense, as they're now riding a 23-inning scoreless streak. Game Balls for this Thursday night go to Doston, Knarr, Quero, Lutz and Christian Tripp. Transactions: OF Arbert Cipion assigned to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina INF Jose Acosta (recently acquired from Texas Rangers for cash considerations) assigned to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina C Alex Hall’s contracted selected by MLB Brewers from High-A Wisconsin, replacing C Omar Narvaez who went on the Covid-19 injured list Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Postponed, to Conclude Tomorrow: Carolina 5, Lynchburg 2 (top of 8th inning) Box Score / Game Log The work in this Battle for First Place will need to continue on Friday, with the contest paused in the top of the 8th inning due to rain. RHP Stiven Cruz had a decent bounce-back outing, keeping the Hillcats off the board through the first 5 innings, though Lynchburg did put at least one runner on base in each of those innings. Carolina grabbed a 2nd inning lead, with an RBI single by Jheremy Vargas driving in Oswel Leones (who’d doubled). That advantage increased to 2-0 in the 6th inning on a Jesus Chirinos RBI single to bring home Jeferson Quero (who’d also doubled). However, Lynchburg finally came through against Mr. Cruz in that same 6th inning, going triple-triple-double to knot the score 2-2 with 1 out. Never fear, as RHP Christian Tripp came in to strand that last runner at second base, getting a strike out and a ground out. With the rains menacing in the 8th inning, the Mudcat offense came to life, with Jackson Chourio (now recognized as one of the top 50 prospects in all of baseball) leading off the inning with his 3rd homer of the season to give Carolina a 3-2 lead. Chourio’s dinger was followed by Hendry Mendez’s first pitch double and then Quero’s second pitch, 2-run blast over the center field wall for a sudden 5-2 Mudcat advantage. Leones then walked and the balance of the game was postponed by rain, to conclude on Friday. Let’s give extra credit to Carolina’s defense, in particular Mr. Quero for throwing out two attempted base stealers (vs. yielding zero steals) and Mr. Cruz for picking off a runner in the first inning. Performances of Note: Jeferson Quero – 2-4, HR, double, 2 RBIs Oswel Leones – 2-3, 2 doubles, walk Jackson Chourio – 1-4, HR, RBI Eduardo Garcia – 1-4, double Hendry Mendez – 1-4, double Jesus Chirinos – 1-2, walk, RBI Jheremy Vargas – 1-3, RBI Stiven Cruz – 5 1/3 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks Christian Tripp (pitcher of record) – 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: After Carolina tries to polish off the remainder of Thursday night’s game, RHP Israel Puello (6.55 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 12.3 K/9 in 33 innings) is scheduled to make his 10th appearance of the season, as the Mudcats aim to win both and even the series at 2-2. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Peoria 4, Wisconsin 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Miss Their Chances in 4-0 Loss Enjoy the video highlights which are always exceptional when the Rattlers play at home: Things are again tightening up atop the Midwest League’s West Division, just as Wisconsin’s offense has unfortunately gone cold. With this loss, the Timber Rattlers are one game behind first place Cedar Rapids and one game ahead of third place South Bend. LHP Brandon Knarr was the tough luck loser-of-record in this game, despite once again dominating the opposition, this time only giving up 1 run on 3 hits over 6 innings. That run came around in the 6th inning via some old school baseball: leadoff double, sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s best offensive chance came and went in the 2nd and 4th innings, when nothing was garnered from a 1st and 2nd, 1-out situation and a 1st and 2nd nobody out opportunity. For the game, the Timber Rattlers went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, but to be fair Peoria weren’t much better in this particular department (3-for-17). Coupled with Wednesday’s shutout and a few innings on Tuesday, Wisconsin’s scoreless streak has now reached 23 innings. Gulp. Although we were counting on Wisconsin’s normally-stellar bullpen to keep them in the contest, it wasn’t meant to be on this night, as RHPs James Meeker and Kent Hasler gave up 3 runs over 2 1/3 innings in the 8th and 9th innings. RHP Brady Schanuel did come in to retire the two batters he faced, thereby stranding one inherited runner to keep the game within reach at 4-0. However, that’s how it would conclude. We would be remiss not to recognize the terrific pitching effort by Peoria’s squad, including Dionys Rodriguez’s 5 shutout innings and the bullpen combination of Levi Prater and Andre Granillo striking out 7 Wisconsin batters over their combined 4 shutout innings. Three Wisconsin errors (two by Ashton McGee, one by Zavier Warren) certainly didn’t help their cause in this one, although they did not result in any unearned runs. Performances of Note: Zavier Warren – 2-4, SB Tyler Black – 1-3, double, walk Brandon Knarr (Loss) – 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks Friday’s outlook: Wisconsin is down 2-1 in their series and turns to LHP Antoine Kelly (3.27 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 12.3 K/9 in 44 innings) to make things right in Game 4, while hoping the offense wakes up after consecutive shutout losses. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 10, Pensacola 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Campbell, Coca and Doston Drive Shuckers Offense in 10-7 Victor Looking at a box score of 17 runs and 26 hits, one might not believe that this was a 3-2 contest through 5 innings, before both teams started making the most of their opportunities. Did anyone predict the Shuckers’ 7-8-9 hitters (Noah Campbell, Yeison Coca, Terence Doston) to produce 7 hits, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored? Heck, they even drew 3 walks and only struck out once. Well done young men! Pensacola grabbed the early 1-0 lead via a Troy Johnston 1st inning homer, while each team stranded one runner in the inning. Biloxi responded to that initial shot with Cam Devanney smacking a dinger of his own in the 2nd inning. The traffic against starters the Shuckers’ TJ Shook and the Blue Wahoos’ Zach McCambley continued throughout the next several innings, though the runs were more scarce. Biloxi did manage to grab a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning on a Doston RBI single to drive in Campbell (who’d reached via a ground rule double). Unfortunately, nemesis Griffin Conine answered with a 2-run homer off of Mr. Shook in the bottom of the 5th inning to give Pensacola its second lead of the game at 3-2. TJ managed to escape the inning without further damage, though it took a fly out and sharp line out to strand a runner at second base. The Shuckers hit brigade finally opened things up in the 7th inning, with RBI singles by Coca, Doston and then a 2-out, 2-run double by Felix Valerio to give Biloxi a 6-3 lead. That lead ultimately grew to 9-3 on a Campbell RBI triple and then back-to-back 8th inning home runs by Thomas Dillard and Tristen Lutz (who remains super-hot since returning from injury). Not wanting to bore the Pensacola home fans, Biloxi’s bullpen made it interesting, with RHP Taylor Floyd (still not himself after missing time to start the season) conceding two runs in the 8th inning and then the normally-reliable RHP Harold Chirino giving up another two runs in the 9th innings to allow the Blue Wahoos to close the gap to 10-7 with nobody out and a runner on 2nd base. Thankfully, Biloxi’s defense saved them in the end, with Chirino throwing out the lead runner at third base on an infield grounder and then a ground ball double play ending the affair. Oh, about that 10th Shucker run? It came in the top of the 9th inning, courtesy of a Coca triple and Doston RBI double. Yes, the unexpected contributions continued all 9 innings in this one. Super-prospect OF Joey Wiemer missed his 2nd straight game, after leaving Tuesday’s contest early. Let’s hope he’s back in action tonight. Performances of Note: Terence Doston – 3-4, double, walk, 3 RBIs Tristen Lutz – 2-5, HR, RBI, SB Noah Campbell – 2-4, triple, double, walk, RBI Yeison Coca – 2-4, triple, walk, RBI Thomas Dillard – 1-5, HR, RBI Cam Devanney – 1-5, HR, RBI Felix Valerio – 1-5, double, 2 RBIs TJ Shook (Win) – 6 IP, 3 R, 9 H, 1 BB, 2 WPs, 4 Ks JT Hintzen – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K Friday’s outlook: Solid RHP Victor Castaneda (2.84 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 9.7 K/9 in 44 1/3 innings) will be on the mound tonight, looking to even up the series in Pensacola at 2 games apiece. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Durham 9, Nashville 7 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Bulls Slug Their Way Past Sounds Again As terrific as minor league heroes look on a nightly basis, we always need to remember that they’re also human. I say this because we definitely need to give Nashville’s RHP Josh Lindblom a mulligan for his struggles this night, in which he was uncharacteristically tagged for 7 runs and 10 hits over 5 innings of work, including 4 home runs. I imagine it must be a tad bittersweet for Mr. Lindblom to see so many of his teammates getting call-ups to the Big Club recently, whilst he awaits his next turn. We appreciate you Josh!!! And that next turn will come. It was great to see Mark Mathias settle back into his role as an offensive force, with his 5th homer of 2022 giving the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Unfortunately, that lead was erased by a 2nd inning 2-run blast from Jordan Qsar and then 3 homers in the 3rd inning (including a second by Mr. Qsar) to quickly put the game out of reach at 7-2. DH/OF Garrett Whitley was welcomed back after a 5-week injury and made his presence known with a 5th inning solo shot, his first home run of 2022. To Mr. Lindblom’s credit, he covered his final 2 1/3 innings in scoreless fashion. Rehabbing Major League All-Star Willy Adames (well, at least I expect he’ll be in the ASG in 2022) had a ground out and line out before a 5th inning single was his last action of his planned short evening. A Durham pitching change in the 6th inning threw Nashville a lifeline, with Chris Muller (not my relation; I mean, it’s not even spelled the same) walking 4 Sounds before Jonathan Davis was unable to drive anyone home with the bases loaded. At least that tightened the contest at 7-4, with highly capable RHP Connor Sadzeck coming in to hopefully keep it that way. Um, no. Two batters, two Bulls’ home runs. 9-4 scoreline. Yes, Durham hit 6 moon balls on the night and all 9 Bulls’ runs scored via balls over the fence. Ugh. Of course, being the best non-MLB squad on Planet Earth, Nashville mounted a comeback, with an 8th inning walk (David Dahl), single (Abraham Almonte), double (Pablo Reyes) and home run (Tyler White – his 7th of the year) closing the gap to 9-7. However, that was as close as Nashville could get, as Durham’s bullpen combination of Seth Blair and Cristofer Ogando retired all 7 Sounds they faced to close it out. Performances of Note: Abraham Almonte – 2-4, double, walk Tyler White – 1-3, HR, walk, 2 RBIs Mark Mathias – 1-5, HR, 2 RBIs Garrett Whitley – 1-3, HR, walk, RBI Pablo Reyes – 1-3, double, walk, SB Willy Adames – 1-3 Josh Lindblom (Loss) – 5 IP, 7 R, 10 H, 3 BBs, 1 WP, 3 Ks Zack Brown – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Caleb Boushley (3.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 in 51 2/3 innings) aims to continue his recent resurgence (7 shutout innings of 3-hit ball last week), which Nashville will need in order to tie up their series in Durham at 2-2. Forgive me, Father, for my faith-o-meter was low heading into Sunday’s games, in light of the elevated ERAs of our starting pitchers: Mudcats’ Fernando Olguin – 6.75 ERA Rattlers’ Ryne Moore – 16.71 ERA (at High-A level) Shuckers’ Noah Zavolas – 7.71 ERA Sounds’ Alec Bettinger – 7.88 ERA Of course, the real games are played on the field, and “past results are not necessarily predictive of future performance” (or is that an investment caveat?). And the results on Sunday were terrific, with all four Brewer full-season affiliate offenses in high gear: Carolina stormed ahead 3-2 on a Willy Adames (yes, that Willy Adames, rehabbing from injury) hitting a two-run homer, after which the Mudcats would add another ten unanswered runs. Jackson Chourio starred with four hits Wisconsin jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 6-2, then hung on for a terrific win, with OF Tristan Peters homering and driving in three runs Biloxi wasn’t fazed by an early 4-0 deficit, putting up a team-record 16 runs in a game where both offenses were relentless. C Brent Diaz was the star with a home run and five RBIs Nashville had all the answers after a 4-0 early lead had evaporated into a 4-4 tie by the 4th inning, with Abraham Almonte smacking the go-ahead two-run blast and Pablo Reyes adding a three-run shot as insurance As to those starters, Olguin and Moore came through with solid performances, yielding two earned runs and one earned run, respectively, while Zavolas and Bettinger actually saw their ERAs increase (oh no!) as they continue to work back into game shape after long layoffs. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Chourio, Almonte, Diaz, Peters and Zach Vennaro, with shout outs to Jonathan Davis, Reyes, Jesus Chirinos, Robbie Hitt, Tristen Lutz and Thomas Dillard for their own massive contributions to Sunday’s terrific results. Transactions: OF/IF Noah Campbell was activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 13, Kannapolis 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Adames and Mudcats Slug Out 13-2 Victory The first place Mudcats were not daunted by a first inning 2-0 deficit, ripping off 13 straight runs from the 2nd through the 6th inning to win handily and take the series 5-1 over Kannapolis. In the 2nd inning, Jackson Chourio had the first of his four hits on the night, this one of the infield variety, ultimately scoring on a Jesus Chirinos RBI groundout. Rehabbing DH Willy Adames (yes, it’s totally unfair, we know!) then blasted the first pitch he saw in the 3rd inning to right field for a two-run homer and a Mudcat lead which would never be relinquished. Luis Silva then opened up the flood gates with a bases-clearing double in the 4th inning for a 6-2 lead, which was Silva’s second clutch hit in as many games after a game-tying RBI single in the final inning of Saturday night’s victory. In the same inning, Chourio’s 2nd hit of the night knocked in two more Carolina runs for an 8-2 lead. The hit squad continued their work in the 6th inning, with OF Arbert Cipion smacking his 4th home run of the year and Chirinos adding a bases clearing double to the Cannon Ballers’ misery. Bid kudos go out to starter Fernando Olguin for settling down and not yielding any runs over his final four innings of work. Carolina’s bullpen of Michele Vassalotti, Jesus Montero, Trevor Tietz and Christian Tripp were also fabulous, combining to cover 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Is it promotion time for the dominant Vassalotti, 25-year old Tripp and/or others (e.g. RHP Brannon Jordan, OF Cipion, 2B Zack Raabe)? Let’s see if there’s any announcement on Tuesday. Performances of Note: Jackson Chourio – 4-5, double, 2 RBIs Jesus Chirinos – 2-4, double, 4 RBIs Willy Adames – 1-2, HR, BB, 2 RBIs Arbert Cipion – 1-3, HR, 2 BBs, RBI Luis Silva – 1-4, double, 3 RBIs Hendry Mendez – 1-2, double Zack Raabe – 1-3, HBP Fernando Olguin – 4 2/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 2 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks Michele Vassalotti (Win) – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Jesus Montero – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K Trevor Tietz – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Christian Tripp – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K Next week’s outlook: The 26-19 Mudcats hit the road to take on 24-20 Lynchburg. Expect RHPs Carlos F. Rodriguez (4.81 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 in 24 1/3 innings) and Alexander Cornielle to tag-team the opener of the six-game series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 6, Cedar Rapids 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Hold On To Beat Kernels and Earn Series Split Needing a fast start on the road against a tough Cedar Rapids’ squad, Wisconsin’s offense was up to the task, getting a 1st inning run on a Tyler Black leadoff single and three consecutive walks, then getting consecutive home runs from Black and Carlos D. Rodriguez in the 2nd inning for a 3-0 early lead. Of course, when you’re facing the league leaders and have a starting pitcher coming off consecutive rough outings, you don’t want to gift the opposition any runs, but that’s unfortunately exactly what Wisconsin’s defense did, with throwing errors by Ryne Moore and Wes Clarke allowing the Kernels to claw back to 3-2 by the 3rd inning. Matters were made worse when red-hot Rodriguez exited the game with an injured knee after grounding out in the 4th inning. With Joey Wiemer itching for promotion from Biloxi to AAA and Rodriguez finally mashing in his 2nd season of High-A ball, the 21-year-old has actually been on the promotion watch. Let’s pray the injury is not serious. Thankfully, fellow OF Tristan Peters came through in a big way, fouling off three pitches and then hitting a three-run homer in the 4th inning to grow the Timber Rattlers’ lead to 6-2, before the Rattler bats went eerily silent. With only one more Rattler hit the rest of the evening, the team needed a stellar pitching effort the rest of the way to hold off the dangerous Kernels. Starter Moore ably covered six innings on the night, with a 5th inning homer being the only earned run he conceded. RHP Joey Matulovich was exceptional in his one inning of work (two Ks, line out), before RHP James Meeker yielded an 8th inning run on two hits and a walk, thankfully stranding two runners with Wisconsin clinging to a 6-4 lead. Cam Robinson certainly made it interesting by hitting the leadoff batter and giving up a single to open the 9th inning, then adding a one-out walk to load the bases and taking the count full to the next Cedar Rapids hitter. Of course, Mr. Robinson came through as he always does, striking out the final two batters to close out a 6-4 Rattler victory. And with that sigh of relief, Wisconsin can be proud that they managed a 3-3 series split for the week, remaining just one game behind Cedar Rapids for first place. Okay, will we see those expected promotions of LHP Antoine Kelly and RHPs Brandon Knarr, Cam Robinson, and Kent Hasler this week? What about ever-dangerous 2B Tyler Black? Again, let’s hope and pray that OF Rodriguez’s injury does not cause him to miss significant time. Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 2-4, HR, double, BB, 3 RBIs Tyler Black – 2-4, HR, BB, RBI, SB Carlos D. Rodriguez – 1-3, double, RBI Ashton McGee – 1-3, BB Ryne Moore (Win) – 6 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 5 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 4 Ks Joey Matulovich – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Cam Robinson (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 28-17 Timber Rattlers return home to face 18-27 Peoria. Expect RHP Justin Jarvis start in the opener, who’s coming off a gem in his last outing (6 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 9 Ks). Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 16, Montgomery 11 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Diaz Drives Home Five in Series Finale Victory What a turnaround for the Shuckers after a rough previous week! I believe the three days off (Monday-Wednesday) likely allowed the team to re-focus, while it probably didn’t hurt that the Montgomery Biscuits came into the series with an eight-game losing streak. Well, now the Shuckers have a four-game winning streak to feel excellent about and rather unbelievably sit in a tie for first place in the highly competitive Southern League South Division (the third-place team is only half a game out of first). Imagine scoring 16 runs on an 0-for-5 Joey Wiemer night! This was stunning! RHP Noah Zavolas has obviously not yet found his standard form after missing spring training and the first month of the season, again getting shellacked in this contest: three first-inning runs, on a homer, double, two singles, and a walk two second-inning walks, but thankfully only one run two fourth-inning runs, on two more homers Thankfully, the Biloxi offense was prepared to support their suffering starter, sending eight batters to the plate in a four-run second inning to knot the game at 4-4, with Gabe Holt doubling in a run, Brent Diaz singling in two runs, and Felix Valerio adding a two-out RBI single. Again trailing, this time 6-5 in the 5th inning, Cam Devanney doubled in the tying run and Mr. Diaz added a two-out, two-run single to give Biloxi an 8-6 lead. As mentioned above, key credit goes to RHP Robbie Hitt for calming the waters by retiring all four batters he faced over his 1 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, RHP JT Hintzen ran into trouble in the 6th, 7th innings, and 8th innings, with a walk, single, and passed ball cutting the lead to 8-7 and then a walk, error and three-run homer giving Montgomery ten runs to that point in the evening. Given the defensive miscues, only one of Hintzen’s five runs allowed was actually earned. Thomas Dillard had briefly extended the Shuckers’ lead to 10-7 with a two-run single in the 6th inning, then came through again in the 7th inning with another RBI single to re-take the lead at 11-10. From there, the inning quickly got out of hand for Montgomery, as Jakson Reetz plated a run on an infield single and then OF Tristen Lutz cleared the bases with a three-run double for a 15-10 Biloxi lead. Back to Hintzen, who gave up a double and walk to open the 8th inning before struggling RHP Taylor Floyd entered the game with the challenging two-on, nobody out situation. Mr. Floyd promptly walked the first batter he faced on four pitches and serious fear was creeping in. Was Montgomery going to have a big inning to tie up the game once again? Thankfully, Taylor Floyd came through on this evening, inducing a ground ball double play and striking out the next batter to escape with a 15-11 lead. For good measure, Mr. Diaz connected on his 6th homer of the year in the bottom of the 8th inning to restore Biloxi’s four-run advantage, before RHP Nash Walters closed it out with a three-up, three-down 9th inning (two strikeouts. Performances of Note: Brent Diaz – 3-4, HR, BB, 5 RBIs Tristen Lutz – 2-5, double, 3 RBIs Cam Devanney – 2-4, double, BB, RBI Thomas Dillard – 2-4, BB, 3 RBIs Felix Valerio – 2-5, BB, RBI Jakson Reetz – 1-2, 3 BBs, RBI Gabe Holt – 1-4, double, SF, 2 RBIs Noah Zavolas – 3 2/3 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 4 BBs, 2 WPs, 4 Ks Robbie Hitt – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks JT Hintzen (Win) – 2 IP, 5 R (1 ER), 3 H, 3 BBs, 1 K Taylor Floyd – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K Nash Walters – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 22-21 Shuckers will bus to 20-20 Pensacola. Expect LHP Nick Bennett (5.21 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 in 38 innings) to start the opener. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 9, Toledo 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Win Finale in Toledo to Earn Series Split Nashville’s prospect of earning a win to avoid their first series loss of 2022 took a hit during pre-game, when expected starter LHP Ethan Small (1.88 ERA) was replaced with RHP Alec Bettinger (7.88 ERA), who’s still rounding into game shape after missing spring training and the first month of the season. Of course, Small’s absence was actually excellent news, since he’s being promoted to The Show to start Game One of the Brewers’ Monday doubleheader against the Cubs. The Sounds’ offense was ready to support their surprise starter, with OF Jonathan Davis opening the game with a double and scoring on a ground out, then the team knocking in two more runs in the 2nd inning on two walks, an error and a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. That lead grew to 4-1 in the 4th inning, courtesy of a Davis RBI double. Unfortunately, Bettinger was hit hard again in this one, giving up: A line-drive single in the first inning A homer and line-drive single in the second inning Two doubles and a walk in the 3rd inning, bailed out by 3B Andruw Monasterio throwing out a runner at home A homer, two singles, and a walk in the 4th inning before exiting with a 4-3 lead with two on and nobody out. Zach Vennaro could not have been thrust into a more difficult spot in his first-ever AAA appearance, but was downright exceptional, getting a ground ball double play and ground out to escape the inning, though one run would score on a throwing error to tie up the game at 4-4. Vennaro then struck out three batters in the 5th inning and induced three ground outs in the 6th inning and ultimately earned the win for his amazing effort. In the top of the 6th inning, Jonathan Davis reached base with his third hit of the evening, following which OF Abraham Almonte cracked his sixth home run of 2022 for a 6-4 Nashville lead. RHP Matt Hardy continued the terrific bullpen work with two scoreless innings before Pablo Reyes put the game out of reach with a 9th inning three-run shot (his fifth of the year) to extend the lead to 9-4. The terrific offensive and bullpen efforts earned the Sounds a 3-3 series split for their week in Toledo. We should note that OF David Dahl was ejected after a three-pitch strikeout in the first inning, never getting to play in the field in this one. Performances of Note: Jonathan Davis – 3-5, 2 doubles, RBI Abraham Almonte – 2-4, HR, double, BB, 2 RBIs Pablo Reyes – 1-4, HR, BB, 3 RBIs, SB Brian Navarreto – 1-3, SF, RBI Weston Wilson – 1-3, BB Tyler White – 1-4, BB Alec Bettinger – 3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 8 H, 2 BBs, 1 K Zach Vennaro (Win) – 3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Matt Hardy – 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: Nashville (32-15) remains on the road this week to take on 25-23 Durham, playing on Monday (Memorial Day) before having Tuesday off. Expect RHP Dylan File to handle the opening game. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Enjoy your travel day (except for Nashville, who plays TODAY), young fellas! Terrific offensive output catapulted Nashville, Biloxi and Carolina to big wins, while the Timber Rattlers held on to a 6-4 victory to claw within a game of first place Cedar Rapids. The Sounds played 13 innings, winning the continuation of Saturday’s game 17-7 and coming back to defeat Louisville 5-4 in the night cap. Antoine Kelly was dominant with 13 Ks, but Wisconsin still had to rally to win it 7-6 late. Carolina tried to rally again from a big deficit, ultimately dropping the game 5-3. Biloxi never threatened in their 6-1 loss. The story of Sunday night should be Antoine Kelly and his 13 K performance in 5 2/3 innings against the hapless Cubs, but those lucky losers made a game of it before Cam Robinson, James Meeker, Tyler Black & Co. pulled it out. Nashville and Louisville kept it entertaining for the fans, scoring another 17 runs over the remaining innings of Saturday’s continued contest, while playing a 5-4 nail-biter in the night cap. Pablo Reyes went 4-5 with a home run in the opener and had the game-winning homer in the late game. Carolina laid low for most of their contest, before trying to score another 6 runs in the final inning to pull out a win, alas falling short 5-3. Lifeless Biloxi dropped their finale against Mississippi as they continue to struggle with three key players sidelined (Garrett Mitchell, Freddy Zamora, Sal Frelick). Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Reyes, Kelly, Robinson, Israel Puello and Abraham. Apologies to James Meeker, Joe Gray Jr., Josh Lindblom, Weston Wilson and Jon Singleton, who each had strong cases as well. Transactions: None, though let me mention RHP Trevor Kelley’s option from the MLB Brewers to AAA Nashville which I’d omitted in an earlier summary. Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 5, Carolina 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: The Mudcats Fun Continues All Month Long RHP Israel Puello had his best start since early April, keeping the Mudcats in the contest over 5 innings while striking out 7 and allowing 1 earned run. Unfortunately, opposing starter LHP Larson Kindreich was simply dominant, conceding no runs, 2 hits and a walk over 6 innings, whilst striking out 8 Mudcats. Wood Duck domination of Carolina hitters continued as they went down in order in the 7th and 8th innings as well, while Down East pushed 3 runs across on 2 home runs against RHP Edwin Jimenez to lead 5-0 heading into the 9th inning. However, that’s where things got interesting as Carolina’s bats finally woke up, with 4 singles and a walk closing the gap to 5-3 and Down East making a pitching change with 2 outs, runners on the corners and Jesus Chirinos up. Unfortunately, Chirinos went down swinging on a full count, but the Mudcats should still feel satisfied with their memorable 4-2 series win. Performances of Note: Zack Raabe – 2-3, BB, SB Hendry Mendez – 1-3, SF, RBI Jeferson Quero – 1-3, RBI Oswel Leones – 1-4, RBI Luis Silva – 1-3 Israel Puello (Loss) – 5 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 7 Ks Edwin Jimenez – 4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 2 WP, 5 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 21-18 Mudcats remain home to face Kannapolis (17-22) for the first time this year. Expect RHP Fernando Olguin (5 shutout innings in his first appearance last week) to start the opener of the 6-game series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 7, South Bend 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Rattlers Get the Last Rally in Walkoff, 7-6 Win Over Cubs See video highlights compiled by Wisconsin’s talented media squad here: LHP Antoine Kelly was simply on another level in this game, comfortably mowing down Cubbie hitters to the tune of 13 strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, including the first 6 batters of the game. Entering the 6th inning, Kelly had walked none and given up only 2 hits, before dumb luck got in the way as he neared his pitch limit. Offensively, Wisconsin’s bats stayed hot after Saturday’s night win, with Micah Bello driving in 2 runs (and himself on an error) with a 2nd inning double and then Joe Gray Jr. hitting a 2-run, 3rd inning homer to give the Timber Rattlers a seemingly large 5-0 lead. In the 6th inning, the Cubs put two runners on base via infield grounders, before their big basher Jake Washer (26 years old in High-A with an OPS over 1.100) came to the plate with Kelly already at 85 pitches. Predictably as these things tend to go, Kelly walked the dangerous right handed hitter and had to exit with the bases loaded despite no meaningful Cub contact. Unfortunately, usually electric RHP Kent Hasler was not himself this night, as the Cub smacked his first two pitches for a 3-run double and an RBI single, tightening the contest at 5-4 and ballooning unlucky Kelly’s season ERA from 1.82 to 2.52. Hasler was done after just 5 pitches, with RHP Robbie Baker coming in to give up another 2 runs in the 7th inning, as Wisconsin suddenly trailed 6-5. But RHP Cam Robinson was immune to South Bend’s magic, facing the minimum 6 Cubbies over the 8th and 9th innings and giving Wisconsin a great chance to pull out a victory. The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the 8th inning, getting the tying run across (Tyler Black, who’d started the inning with a single) on a Wes Clarke sacrifice fly. In the 10th inning, the Cubbies went with the old-fashioned approach of bunting Manfred’s ghost over to 3rd base, but RHP James Meeker would allow nothing from there, getting a strike out and fly out to leave the ghost runner stranded. In the bottom half, Mr. Black again opened the inning with a single, moving Micah Ghost Bello to 3rd base. Deciding to up the pressure on themselves I guess (or play for the triple play?), South Bend intentionally walked Zavier Warren and then allowed a passed ball to allow Bello to score the game-winning run. Wisconsin 7, Lucky Losers 6. That’s a 3-3 series split for the week. Performances of Note: Joe Gray Jr. – 3-4, HR, 2 RBIs Tyler Black – 2-5, double, RBI Micah Bello – 1-4, double, 2 RBIs Darrien Miller – 1-4, double Zavier Warren – 1-4, double, BB Antoine Kelly – 5 2/3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 13 Ks Cam Robinson – 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks James Meeker (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: The 25-14 Timber Rattlers hit the road to face first place Cedar Rapids (26-13) for the first time in 2022. Expect RHP Ryne Moore (3.46 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 39 innings across two levels) to make his second-ever High-A start in the opener. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 6, Biloxi 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Shuckers Drop Series Finale 6-1 There’s not much to talk about here, as the Shuckers just aren’t playing very good or interesting baseball without the likes of Mitchell, Zamora and Frelick. Mississippi jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning against LHP Nick Bennett on 3 hits and a walk, then conceded a 4th run on a Tristen Lutz fielding error in the 5th inning. Thomas Dillard came through with an RBI single to score Gabe Holt (who’d singled) in the 6th inning, but the Braves grabbed the run right back in the bottom half against RHP Nash Walters (triple, RBI single). For the week, Biloxi won 2 games and lost 4, hoping to turn things around at home next week. If you want to watch the other team’s highlights, visit @mbraves on Twitter. Performances of Note: Gabe Holt – 2-4 Joey Wiemer – 1-4, double Thomas Dillard – 1-4, RBI Cam Devanney – 1-3, BB, SB Brent Diaz – 1-3 Nick Bennett (Loss) – 4 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BBs, 1 K JT Hintzen – 1 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The struggling 18-21 Shuckers come home to face 15-19 Montgomery, which swept Biloxi in Montgomery earlier in the month. Expect either RHP Justin Bullock or RHP Carlos Luna to start the opener, likely tag-teaming the game. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final (continuation from Saturday night): Nashville 17, Louisville 7 Box Score / Game Log Final: Nashville 5, Louisville 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Slug Way to Sunday Sweep Nashville and Louisville played loose in the opening contest of the day, continuing from the 3rd inning of Saturday’s rain-paused game with the Sounds leading 7-0. Unable to copy RHP Josh Lindblom’s 3-inning shutout performance, RHPs Alec Bettinger and Thomas Jankins instead gave up 7 runs over 4 innings, which would have been a problem if Nashville’s offense didn’t also put up: 2 runs in the 4th inning (Pablo Reyes RBI double, Weston Wilson RBI single) 4 runs in the 6th inning (Reyes homer, Tyler White 2-RBI single, Mark Mathias sac fly) 4 runs in the 7th inning (Weston Wilson RBI single, Abraham Almonte 2-run homer, Jon Singleton dinger) RHP Luke Barker stopped the fireworks in the 8th inning, earning the win for his efforts. Things were far more difficult in Game Two of this pseudo-doubleheader, with RHP Caleb Boushley making his 2nd start of the week and no other long inning guys available to possibly come to his aid. Louisville jumped on Boushley early, with Jake Bauers bashing a 2-run homer in the first inning and then a single, triple and RBI groundout extending their lead to 4-1 in the 2nd inning. However, this Nashville squad simply knows how to win, while the Louisville Bats simply know how to do something else. Mark Mathias and Weston Wilson hit solo home runs in each of the first two innings to keep the affair close at 4-2, while the Bats swung early and often to allow Boushley to go deep into the game. After Alex Jackson threw out a would-be base stealer in the top of the 4th inning (thank you Louisville for speeding up the game!), Tyler White knocked in eagle-eyed Jon Singleton (who’d walked) to put the game on a knife’s edge at 4-3. Louisville opted to run themselves out of the 5th inning by trying and failing to extend a single to a double, though Nashville was unable to bring Jonathan Davis home from 2nd base in the bottom half. Boushley covered the 6th inning as well, finishing the week with 172 pitches thrown, while the Bats turned to their 4th pitcher of the game. Jon Singleton greeted LHP Phillip Diehl with a double, before David Dahl struck out on a foul tip. That set the stage for Pablo Reyes , who’d gone 4-5 with a home run in the opener and wanted more. Reyes came through with a 2-run shot over the left field well and Nashville had its first lead at 5-4. RHP Hobie Harris came in for the attempted save, but wasn’t his usual self, walking two of the first three Louisville hitters he faced. However, the generous Bats got another baserunner thrown out (Do not run on Alex Jackson! ? ) and Harris struck out Nick Senzel to end the game and earn the save. That’s a 5-1 series win for Nashville, their 7th straight series victory to open this amazing season. Performances of Note (Game One): Pablo Reyes – 4-5, HR, double, 3 RBIs, SB Abraham Almonte – 3-4, 2 HR, BB, 6 RBIs Weston Wilson – 3-5, 3 RBIs, SB Jon Singleton – 2-5, HR, RBI Andruw Monasterio – 2-5, triple David Dahl – 2-4, BB Tyler White – 1-4, BB, 2 RBIs Mario Feliciano – 1-5, RBI Josh Lindbom – 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Alec Bettinger – 3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 4 H, 2 BBs, 1 WP, 0 Ks Luke Barker (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks Performances of Note (Game Two): Jonathan Davis – 2-3 Pablo Reyes – 1-3, HR, 2 RBIs Mark Mathias – 1-3, HR, RBI Weston Wilson – 1-3, HR, RBI Jon Singleton – 1-1, double, 2 BBs Tyler White – 1-3, RBI Caleb Boushley (Win) – 6 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Hobie Harris (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BBs, 1 K Next week’s outlook: Nashville (29-12) will be on the road this week to take on 21-19. If he’s healthy and not called up to Milwaukee, expect LHP Ethan Small (1.95 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 12.8 K/9 in 32 1/3 innings) to handle the opening game, with LHP Andy Otero being the most likely alternative. Carolina comes back from a 4-run deficit with 2 outs in the 9th to win on a Hendry Mendez walk-off grand slam. Biloxi also battles to steal a 4-3 win. Nashville’s pitchers combined on a 5-hit, 4-0 shutout victory. Wisconsin’s bats never got going in a 6-2 loss. The Friday night rollercoaster twisted and turned in all directions: All 4 full season affiliates appeared in decent position to win in the early innings, with Nashville up 1-0, RHP Victor Castaneda retiring the first 9 batters he faced for Biloxi, Wes Clarke matching homer-for-homer to knot Wisconsin’s game 1-1 and Carolina tying up their contest at 2-2 in the 5th inning A few innings later, Nashville held the only lead, but reliever Peter Strzelecki was facing a bases loaded jam in that contest, putting the entire night in jeopardy. But Strzelecki escaped the jam and Cam Devanney came through for Biloxi with an 8th-inning, 2-out, 2-run game-tying homer, thus opening the door to a 2-2 night for our young heroes Then in a script which Hollywood studios would have written off as too farcical, Carolina battled back from the literal brink of defeat. Down 6-2 with 2 outs, 2 strikes and nobody on base in the 9th inning, it started with a Jheremy Vargas single and ended five batters later with a Hendry Mendez Walk-Off Grand Slam for an 8-6 victory And finally, Jakson Reetz smacked a 2-out, 9th inning RBI single to give Biloxi its first lead of the game, with the team holding on to a satisfying 4-3 fight-back victory In all, our affiliates went 3 and 1 on the most entertaining night we’ve seen in a while. Well done, Brewer minor leaguers!! Friday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Mendez, Reetz, Devanney, Castaneda and Jason Alexander. Transactions: None Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 8, Down East 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mendez Caps Comeback With Walk-Off Grand Slam Although they had battled hard and seemed a bit unlucky to be down 6-2 heading into the 9th inning, this game certainly looked lost as the first two Mudcats struck out in the bottom of the 9th and Jheremy Vargas was down to his final strike in a 1-2 count. But let’s take it back to the beginning, where starter RHP Jefferson Figueroa was solid if not spectacular in covering the first 3 innings of the game, conceding an RBI double as the Wood Ducks took a 1-0 lead. RHP Miguel Segura relieved from the 4th inning and is apparently still amongst the “innings eaters” for the squad as he threw 74 pitches to take the game into the 8th inning. After giving up a 5th inning RBI single, the Mudcat offense answered with 2 runs on 3 doubles (by Hedbert Perez, Vargas and Zack Raabe) to knot the game at 2-2. Segura gave up a homer to open the 6th inning as Down East re-took the lead at 3-2, but continued without damage until issuing a full count walk and 1-out single in the 8th inning and giving way to usually-dominant RHP Michele Vassalotti. Unfortunately, Mr. Vassalotti was not sharp on this night, hitting the first batter and walking in a run. The team nearly escaped only down 4-2, but two more runs scored on a fielding error by first baseman Jesus Chirinos, setting the stage for the nearly-unfathomable comeback. The young men of Zebulon simply refused to lose, starting with Jheremy Vargas working the count full before lining a single the other way. Raabe followed with an RBI double, before Arbert Cipion walked to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate in the person of SS Eduardo Garcia. 0-for-4 to this point but undaunted nonetheless, Garcia lined an RBI single to center field before Down East brought in a new pitcher to face the youngest man in Low-A ball, Jackson Chourio. Fortunately, fresh pitcher Jackson Leath threw the ball away to allow Chourio aboard. Now down only 6-4, with the bases loaded and still 2 outs (yes, this was ALL happening with 2 outs), left-handed youngin' Hendry Mendez stepped to the plate and smashed the first pitch he saw the other way, down the left field line for a Walk-Off Grand Slam! What an unforgettable win for Victor Estevez' team!! Performances of Note: Hendry Mendez – 2-3, HR, 2 BBs, 4 RBIs Jheremy Vargas – 2-3, double, BB, RBI Zack Raabe – 2-4, double, 2 RBIs Arbert Cipion – 1-4, double, BB Hedbert Perez – 1-4, double Eduardo Garcia – 1-5, RBI Jefferson Figueroa – 3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BBs, 3 Ks Miguel Segura – 4 1/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 4 H, 3 BBs, 1 balk, 4 Ks Junior Montero (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 BBs, 1 K Saturday’s outlook: Electric RHP Stiven Cruz (0.00 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, 24.0 K/9 in 3 innings) is slated to make his 2nd start of the season, as the Mudcats seek to clinch a series victory at home against Down East. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend 6, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: South Bend Hits Three Homers to Get By Wisconsin A reminder of the excellent video recaps produced by the Timber Rattler media team: The game marked the return of LHP Russell Smith after a 13-day absence and he competed well through the first 3 innings. The teams exchanged 2nd inning solo homers, with Wes Clarke knotting it at 1-1 for his 4th home run of 2022. However, a leadoff 4th inning error, then first pitch single apparently rattled Smith, who then yielded a 3-run blast and a single before retiring his final 3 batters. Down 4-1 at that point, the Timber Rattlers only managed to put 2 runners on base from the 4th through 8th innings. RHP Joey Matulovich worked around two 5th inning singles to strike out 3 hitters, then RHP Max Lazar threw a clean 6th before a 2-run shot in the 7th inning appeared to put the game out of reach at 6-1. (Bright side: These were the only runs surrendered by Lazar over 4 innings.) Wisconsin did manage 1 run on 3 singles (Carlos D. Rodriguez RBI) in the 9th inning to put the potential game-tying run on deck, but that's as close as they got. In the Darrien Miller defense watch, Miller threw out 1 of 4 base stealers. Performances of Note: Carlos D. Rodriguez – 2-3, double, BB, RBI Wes Clarke – 2-4, HR, RBI Tristan Peters – 2-4, SB Ethan Murray – 1-3, SB Russell Smith (Loss) – 4 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks Joey Matulovich – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks Max Lazar – 4 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks Saturday’s outlook: Exceptional LHP Brandon Knarr (1.34 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 10.7 K/9 in 40 1/3 innings) is the scheduled starter, ready to snap Wisconsin’s 3-game skid at home against South Bend. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 4, Mississippi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Reetz Ninth-Inning Single Lifts Shuckers to 4-3 Victory In a reversal of fortune from Thursday night's contest between these teams, it was Biloxi which came from behind late to grab a victory over Mississippi this night. The first 5 innings were a story of frustration, as the Shuckers stranded 6 runners without scoring. By contrast, the Braves cashed in on their very first opportunity with two 4th inning doubles, after RHP Victor Castaneda retired all 9 batters through 3 innings. Power Hitter (and apparently left fielder these past 2 games) Jakson Reetz blasted his 10th home run of 2022 to tie it back up at 1-1 in the 6th inning before Mississippi answered right with a 2-run shot for a 3-1 lead. The frustration continued in the 7th inning, with Cam Devanney, Yeison Coca and Joey Wiemer left stranded despite a double, walk and single respectively, done in by left fielder Jalen Miller’s incredible catch of Thomas Dillard’s fly ball at the wall which would have scored 3 runs against any ordinary being. Coming up again with 1-on (Reetz, via walk) and 2-out in the 8th inning, Devanney decided to take matters fully into his hands, driving a 2-run shot (his 5th of the year) to left to knot the score at 3-3. Stud reliever RHP Harold Chirino retired all 6 hitters he faced in the 7th and 8th innings to keep Biloxi squarely in it. Who would play hero in the 9th? Well, Mr. Reetz of course, knocking a 2-out, RBI single into center field to plate Felix Valerio, who'd reached via error and stolen 2nd base to get into scoring position. Zach Vennaro then closed the game out without drama with a 3-up, 3-down save of Biloxi's 4-3 win. Performances of Note: Jakson Reetz – 2-4, HR, BB, 2 RBIs Cam Devanney – 2-4, HR, double, 2 RBIs Tristen Lutz – 2-5 Gabe Holt – 2-5 Victor Castaneda – 6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 Ks Harold Chirino (Win) – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Zach Vennaro (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Saturday’s outlook: Experienced RHP Noah Zavolas (2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 in 3 1/3 innings) is ready to make his 2nd start of the 2022 season, with Biloxi aiming to take a 3-2 series lead on the road against the Mississippi Braves. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 4, Louisville 0 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Shut Out Bats at First Horizon Park Don't be fooled by the scoreline as this game was much more competitive than a 4-0 Nashville victory suggests. After the Sounds stranded two runners in the 2nd inning, Andruw Monasterio (double) and Brice Turang (RBI single) combined on the game's first run in the 3rd inning. From that point, it was the RHP Jason Alexander Magic Show, escaping: 1st and 3rd nobody out in the 4th inning (fly out, double play grounder) 1st and 3rd nobody out in the 5th inning (and bases loaded 1 out) via a strikeout and double play grounder Clinging to that 1-0 lead, Monasterio (bunt single) and Turang (RBI single) also teamed up to double the lead in the 5th inning, before Tyler White connected on his 6th home run of 2022 for a 4-0 Sounds lead. However, RHP Peter Strzelecki continued the drama in the 6th inning by walking two after a single with 1 out. He struck out the next batter before running the count full and being bailed out by C Alex Jackson picking the runner off first base for the 3rd out, triggering an eruption and ejection for Bats' manager Pat Kelly. The bullpen combo of RHPs Miguel Sanchez, Matt Hardy and Connor Sadzeck calmed the waters from there, facing the minimum 9 batters over the final 3 innings. Mario Feliciano continues to re-assert his prospect status, raising his average to .293 with his 6-game hitting streak. Here are a few more Nashville-Louisville highlights from the night: Performances of Note: Tyler White – 2-4, HR, 2 RBIs Brice Turang – 2-4, 2 RBIs, SB Mark Mathias – 2-3, BB Pablo Reyes – 2-4 Andruw Monasterio – 2-4 Mario Feliciano – 1-3, BB, SB Jason Alexander (Win) – 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 5 Ks Peter Strzelecki – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Miguel Sanchez – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Matt Hardy – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Connor Sadzeck – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Saturday’s outlook: RHP Josh Lindblom (2.58 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 8.0 K/9 in 38 1/3 innings) looks to continue his domination of AAA and lead Nashville to a 4-1 series lead at home against Louisville. Alexander Cornielle and Carlos F. Rodriguez combined on an 11K Mudcat 9-2 victory. Justin Jarvis’ 10K gem wasn’t supported with enough Rattler runs. Biloxi’s bullpen allowed a 4-0 lead (on 3 home runs) to evaporate. Terrific efforts by Dylan File and Tyler Herb (9 innings, 1 run, combined) went for naught in Nashville. A night of extremely effective starting pitching unfortunately only resulted in one victory for our full season affiliates, but let’s dwell on the positives: Carlos F. Rodriguez (Carolina), Alexander Cornielle (Carolina) and Justin Jarvis (Wisconsin) each had their best outings of the year TJ Shook (Biloxi) and Tyler Herb (Nashville) each went scoreless in their first appearances after promotion Dylan File (Nashville) put in another solid performance Joey Wiemer (10th homer) and Jakson Reetz (9th homer) continue to do serious damage to baseballs for Biloxi, while Tristen Lutz (4th homer) remains hot after a return from injury Despite the late inning losses, several actually performed well in the bullpen, not yielding any earned runs – Robbie Baker (Wisconsin), James Meeker (Wisconsin), JT Hintzen (Biloxi) Game Balls for this Thursday night go to Cornielle, Jarvis, Rodriguez, Jose Sibrian and Wiemer. Transactions: OF/IF Noah Campbell placed on AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list retroactive to 5/17 OF Terence Doston transferred to AA Biloxi from ACL Brewers Gold RHP Alec Bettinger outrighted to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers’ 40-man roster Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 9, Down East 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Cornielle and Rodriguez Lead Micro Brews to 9-2 Victory This game was a pleasant matter of RHPs Carlos F. Rodriguez and Alexander Cornielle getting the job done until the Carolina offense came to life to blow open the game. Kudos to both on their best performances of the season to date, combining to strike out 11 Wood Ducks and give up only 3 hits. Despite giving up two singles to start the game, Rodriguez didn’t get rattled and was instead lock down from that point, not giving up any more hits over his 4 innings of work. One of those first inning baserunners did score on a sacrifice fly to give Down East an early 1-0 lead, but the Mudcats took the lead right back in the bottom half on an error (scoring Arbert Cipion, who’d walked) and a wild pitch (scoring Jackson Chourio, who’d singled). That 2-1 scoreline continued into the 5th inning, when Rodriguez handed the game over to Cornielle to continue the solid work. Cornielle faced the minimum number of hitters over two innings before Down East turned to their third pitcher of the evening and lived to regret it. In all, the first seven(!) Mudcats reached base in the bottom of the 6th inning on 2 hits and 5 walks, with the big hit being C Jose Sibrian’s bases-clearing double which extended the Carolina lead to 5-1. An RBI walk by SS Eduardo Garcia (a welcome sight in the lineup after leaving Sunday’s game early with an injury) made it 6-1. Cornielle did yield one run in the 7th inning on a walk and a single, but was nonetheless terrific over his 5 innings of work, yielding only that one run and that one hit. Carolina added 3 more runs in the 8th inning on an Oswel Leones single and Zack Raabe 2-RBI double to complete the scoring at 9-2. Performances of Note: Jose Sibrian – 2-3, double, BB, 3 RBIs Zack Raabe – 2-4, double, BB, 2 RBIs Jesus Chirinos – 2-5, double Arbert Cipion – 1-2, 3 BBs Eduardo Garcia – 1-4, BB, RBI Jackson Chourio – 1-4, BB Oswel Leones – 1-4, BB, RBI Carlos F. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: South Bend 3, Wisconsin 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Cubs Beat Rattlers 3-2 in ten innings Enjoy the video highlights which are always exceptional when the Rattlers play at home: Both offenses struggled with runners in scoring position in this game, combining to go 2-20, as the Wisconsin and South Bend staffs struck out 29 hitters over their 20 innings (10 x 2 teams) of work. For Wisconsin, it was RHP Justin Jarvis throwing his best game of the year to drop his season ERA to 5.35, while the Cubs’ 2021 first round pick LHP Jordan Wicks made life difficult on Rattler hitters. Wisconsin did grab a 1-0 2nd inning lead, courtesy of the first three hitters reaching base (Tristan Peters double, Ethan Murray walk, Carlos D. Rodriguez single), but were unfortunately only able to punch home one run via an Alex Hall sacrifice fly, which was followed by an Antonio Pinero strikeout and Tyler Black fly out. South Bend took the lead back in the 4th inning when Mr. Jarvis dropped a throw at first base and immediately conceded a 2-run home run. Resettling himself, Justin retired 9 of the next 10 South Bend hitters to maintain the score at 2-1. Then RHP Robbie Baker continued the effort, allowing only one walk and no hits to cover the 7th and 8th innings. On the offensive side of the ball, 20 straight Timber Rattlers were put down in order from the middle of the 2nd inning to the middle of the 8th inning. In fact, with 2 outs in the 8th inning, Wisconsin managed a Zavier Warren single and two walks to load ‘em up before Wes Clarke was unable to come through. The 9th inning saw RHP James Meeker take the mantle, quickly retiring three Cubbies before Wisconsin finally grabbed that elusive second run to send the game to extra innings. OF Tristan Peters led off with an infield single and went all the way to third base on an error. This was followed a SS Ethan Murray walk, no doubt getting the home crowd excited. However, a Rodriguez ground out and Alex Hall strikeout left Wisconsin hanging by a thread before a wild pitch allowed Peters home to knot the game at 2-2. With Murray now at 3rd base as the potential winning run, Pinero was called out on strikes. Meeker then took the hard luck loss, allowing only 1 of 7 batters to reach base, but that hit was an RBI single to score Manfred’s ghost and give South Bend a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning. In the bottom half, Wisconsin once again got a man to third base with nobody out, this time a wild pitch allowing their own ghost (Pinero) to advance. However, no more hits or wild pitches were to come this day, even as the squad loaded the bases on a Zavier Warren walk and Wes Clarke hit-by-pitch (move man, let the ball get to the screen…ah well). Here’s some stellar defense from Warren earlier in the game: Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 2-5, double Zavier Warren – 1-4, SB Justin Jarvis – 6 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, 2 BBs, 10 Ks Robbie Baker – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks James Meeker (Loss) – 2 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: Wisconsin suddenly finds itself down 2-1 in their series, with South Bend also only 1 game back in the standings, setting up a pivotal Game 4 tonight. Brewer’s 2021 2nd round pick LHP Russell Smith (4.95 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 9.9 K/9 in 20 innings) should be back in action for the first time in 13 days. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Mississippi 9, Biloxi 4 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: M-Braves Shock Shuckers 9-4 After RHP TJ Shook worked through traffic (6 men left on base) over 3 scoreless innings of work in his AA debut and RHP JT Hinzten was solid (retired 6 of 7 batters), Biloxi’s bats were initially silent, going 12-up, 12-down through 4 innings. However, fireworks came in the 5th and 6th innings, when the Shuckers produced 4 runs on 3 hits to take a 4-0 lead. Each of those hits was a banger: Jakson Reetz 9th home run (solo shot) – his 5th in 6 games! Tristen Lutz 4th home run (solo shot) Joey Wiemer 10th home run (absolutely crushed a 2-run blast to score Gabe Holt, who’d walked) However, the game went completely awry in the bottom of the 7th inning, with RHP Nash Walters giving up 4 hits (2 runs), then handing over to RHP Arnaldo Hernandez with 2-on, 1-out. Hernandez did manage to retire the first batter on a ground out before conceding a walk and full-count, bases-clearing double to Mississippi’s CJ Alexander to fall behind 5-4. Hernandez’ painful night continued in the 8th inning, as the first 5 Braves reached base on a home run, double, 2 singles and walk, stretching the lead to 9-4. As something of a positive, RHP Taylor Floyd, who’s struggled since joining the squad late due to an apparent injury, managed to retire 2 of the 3 hitters he faced, although each did put the ball in the play (single, ground out, fly out). Let’s hope Mr. Floyd continues to round into the dominant form we’ve seen in recent years. Let’s also give a tip of the cap to Mr. Lutz, as the former 34th overall draft selection (2017) is experiencing some sustained success at the plate after a recent injury spell, going 8 for his last 19 (.421 AVG), with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 3 walks and only 4 strikeouts. Keep it up young man! Lutz is still only 23 years old, so matching his superb power with more consistent contact can pave the way to a future MLB career. Braves’ second baseman Jalen Miller also made two fine defensive plays in this game before their offense woke up: Performances of Note: Tristen Lutz – 2-4, HR, RBI Joey Wiemer – 1-4, HR, 2 RBIs Jakson Reetz – 1-4, HR, RBI TJ Shook – 3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 BBs, 3 Ks JT Hintzen – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K Arnaldo Hernandez (Loss) – 1 IP, 5 R, 5 H, 2 BBs, 0 K Friday’s outlook: Formidable RHP Victor Castaneda (2.23 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 10.3 K/9 in 32 1/3 innings) will be on the mound tonight, looking to even up the series in Pearl, Mississippi at 2 games apiece. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Louisville 3, Nashville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Bats Clip Sounds in Extra Innings The dependable Sounds saw their 4-game winning streak snapped despite another round of excellent pitching, this time from RHP Dylan File and newly-promoted RHP Tyler Herb. If fans wanted to see offensive fireworks, this was not the game for them, as the Sounds went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and Louisville was not much better (1-for-11). File managed to only concede one run on a 5th inning homer, despite hitting the first two batters he faced in the 3rd inning and a 1-out triple in the 4th inning. After failing to get a runner to 2nd base over the first 4 innings, the Sounds put together two 5th inning singles (Pablo Reyes, Mario Feliciano) with 1 out, but a ground ball double play ended this first threat. The 30-year old Herb entered the game in the 6th inning, which was actually his 31st game at the AAA level (13 with the Giants in 2018, 16 with the Orioles in 2019, 1 with the Mariners in 2021). He worked around a single and a walk in the top half, before Nashville finally knotted up the score via a Jon Singleton 2-out double (a missile off the wall) in the bottom half (plating Abraham Almonte, who’d singled). However, that was the only offense which the Sounds could generate on this Thursday night, stranding runners at 2nd base in the 7th (Weston Wilson – walked), 8th (Brice Turang – singled) and 9th innings (Mario Feliciano – hit-by-pitch). Mr. Herb was in trouble in the top half of the 9th inning, giving up a double and single to start things off, but struck out the next batter and then received some excellent assistance from his defense in the form of 3B Andruw Monasterio throwing out a runner the lead runner at home, ultimately escaping unscathed with another ground out. In the 10th inning, however, Hobie Harris came on and conceded his first earned run of 2022, a first-pitch, 2-run homer to the powerful Aristides Aquino (28 homers in 294 AAA at-bats in 2019; 10 homers in 174 MLB at-bats in 2021) to give the Bats a 3-1 lead. Ultimately, that meant that Harris had to bear the loss, as Nashville went down in order in the bottom half of the 10th inning. Performances of Note: Mario Feliciano – 2-3, HBP - this is another 23-year old who's figuring this out (10 hits over his last 17 at-bats) Jon Singleton – 1-2, double, 2 BBs, RBI Dylan File – 5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 3 Ks Tyler Herb – 4 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BBs, 3 Ks Hobie Harris (Loss) – 1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Jason Alexander (3.03 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 5.8 K/9 in 35 2/3 innings) is expected to get the start, aiming for his 6th victory of 2022. A Sounds win would give them a 3-1 series lead. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report. Good luck tonight, Brewers’ affiliates! What a terrific Sunday for our minor league affiliates, as each and every one jumped out to early leads which held up nicely: Nashville Sounds – 8-4 by the 4th inning Biloxi Shuckers – 4-1 by the 4th inning and 7-1 by the 5th inning Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – 3-0 through 5; 4-0 through 6 Carolina Mudcats – 5-0 in the 2nd inning; 9-1 in the 5th inning And let’s give a shoutout to the minor league staffers and players obviously working hard in extended spring training in Arizona. If the fabulous initial performances of OF Jackson Chourio and RHP Stiven Cruz are anything to go by, there’s some serious competition and development going on down there. The recently-promoted 20-year old Cruz had a scintillating debut for Carolina, striking out eight of the 11 batters he faced, whilst otherwise only conceding a walk, fly out and “soft line drive” single to right field. Who does he think he is, Brandon Knarr? Well, that’d be something special, as Knarr dazzled for Wisconsin on Sunday by shutting out the opposition over seven innings of three-hit, one-walk, ten-strikeout ball. Or if dominant pitching is too boring for you, Sunday saw a team-record six home runs for our Biloxi Shuckers, including two each for Joey Wiemer and Cam Devanney. Oh, and Alberis Ferrer jacked a grand slam for Carolina ?. Coupled with a Brewers’ victory, Sunday, May 15, 2022 almost went down in history as a perfect Wisconsin sports day. Almost… Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Knarr, Wiemer, Devanney, Cruz and Nashville’s Weston Wilson (three hits, four RBIs). Sorry Alberis – your grand slam would have been enough on any other day. Transactions: · None Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Carolina 12, Fayetteville 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Cruz Totals 8 Ks; Ferrer Hits Grand Slam in 12-6 Victory It’s Stiven Cruz’s world and we’re all just enjoying living in it. The 20-year old Nicaraguan was more-than-ready for his 2022 debut, striking out the side in the first inning and then working around a 2nd inning walk to K the next three hitters. In all, he threw 60 pitches over three innings, with no runner reaching 2nd base. On this day, the opposing starter was not quite as sharp, to say the least. Five walks, a single and a wild pitch in the 2nd inning gave Carolina a 3-0 lead before OF Jackson Chourio lined a single to left field to extend the lead to 5-0. At 5-1 with two outs in the top of the 5th inning, 3B Alberis Ferrer blasted a grand slam to left field for his third home run of 2022, seemingly giving the team sufficient cushion. However, some scuffling by RHPs Trevor Tietz and Miguel Segura enabled Fayetteville to claw back to 9-6 in the 7th inning, before LHP Jakob Brustoski calmed nerves by striking out the side in the 8th inning. Thankfully, the Mudcats tacked on another three runs in the 9th inning to put the game out of reach, aided by four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Carolina’s win was enough to draw the week’s series 3-3 with Fayetteville and keep the Mudcats’ record above .500 in 2022. The main downside in this game was SS Eduardo Garcia’s early exit after a fielding error in the 7th inning. Hopefully he’ll be back in the lineup early this week. Performances of Note: Jackson Chourio – 2-5, double, 2 RBIs Jeferson Quero – 2-3, 2 BBs, 2 SBs Alberis Ferrer – 1-3, HR, BB, HBP, 6 RBIs Eduardo Garcia – 1-3, BB, RBI Jesus Chirinos – 1-2, 3 BBs Stiven Cruz – 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks Junior Montero (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BBs, 2 Ks Jakob Brustoski – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 3 Ks Christian Tripp – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BBs, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 17-16 Mudcats return home to face Down East (14-19) in the third series of 2022 between these rivals. Expect RHPs Edwin Jimenez and Israel Puello to start the opener of the six-game series. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 4, Quad Cities 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Knarr Quiets Quad Cities with Ten Ks LHP Brandon Knarr doesn’t ask for much from his offense, so Joe Gray Jr.’s two-run shot to left field in the 3rd inning surely had him smiling with a 2-0 lead. After working around a one-out single and walk in the first inning, Knarr only allowed two more River Bandits to reach base over his seven innings of work. This was Knarr’s 5th consecutive win. Of course, Quad Cities players and fans must have been excited upon seeing Knarr remain in the dugout in the 8th inning and their prayers seemed to be answered when RHP Joey Matulovich allowed the first three hitters to reach base (two hit-by-pitch, single). Matulovich nearly escaped unscathed, but a two-out walk brought the potential game-winning run to the plate. Timber Rattler Manager Joe Ayrault wasn’t messing around in this one, pulling Matulovich after 23 pitches to have RHP James Meeker end Quad Cities’ threat with a strikeout. Meeker remained in the game to cover the 9th inning, earning his 3rd save of 2022. Wisconsin’s victory gave them a second-consecutive 5-1 series win over their opponent, which is huge in light of 3rd place South Bend coming to town next week. Performances of Note: Tyler Black – 3-5, double, RBI Joe Gray Jr. – 1-5, HR, 2 RBIs Darrien Miller – 1-4, double, HBP, RBI Zavier Warren – 1-3, double, 2 BBs Tristan Peters – 1-4, double Brandon Knarr (Win) – 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 10Ks James Meeker (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: The 22-11 Timber Rattlers return home for their second series of the year against South Bend (20-13). LHP Antoine Kelly is listed as the Game One starter, but don’t be surprised if LHP Russell Smith (last pitched May 7th) or RHP Ryne Moore (recently promoted to High-A) get in some work as well. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Birmingham 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: History Again! Biloxi Launches Franchise-Record Six Home Runs The Shuckers won their series! The Shuckers won their series! After a frustrating month, Biloxi’s bats have woken up and the squad notched a 4-2 series win over the Birmingham Barons, their first series victory since April 17th. RHP Noah Zavolas apparently does not subscribe to my “rust” theory, where I give athletes a few mulligans after a long lay-off. (Remember Michael Jordan putting his shorts on backwards and shooting 7-for-28 in his grand mid-season return to the Chicago Bulls?) Zavolas was cool, calm and collected through three innings of work in his 2022 debut, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced and getting the boost he needed when OF Joey Wiemer smacked his 8th homer of 2022 for a 1-0 Biloxi lead in the 3rd inning. However, the 4th inning looked like trouble, with a Birmingham single and two walks opening the frame. To my shock, Zavolas remained in the game, striking out dangerous veteran left-handed hitter Craig Dedelow (eight home runs in 2022) before then being lifted for RHP JT Hintzen. Hintzen was up to the task in this one, inducing a sacrifice fly and a ground out to keep the contest tight at 1-1. In the bottom half of the 4th inning, the Shuckers decided to make a winner of Hintzen, with Jakson Reetz connecting on his 7th home run of 2022 (for the 3rd consecutive day!) and then Cam Devanney blasting a 2-run homer to give Biloxi a 4-1 lead. The shock and awe kept coming, as Wiemer (two-run shot) and Felix Valerio went back-to-back in the 5th inning and Devanney added his 2nd of the game (and 4th of the year) in the 6th inning. The team decided to give RHP Victor Castaneda a bit of work in this one and he was unlucky to give up two runs in the 7th inning on a walk, infield hit and deflected single into left field. That said, Castaneda still struck out six batters over three innings and the Barons never seriously threatened. Performances of Note: Joey Wiemer – 3-5, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs Cam Devanney – 2-4, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs Jakson Reetz – 2-4, HR, RBI Tristen Lutz – 2-3, BB Sal Frelick – 2-5 Felix Valerio – 1-5, HR, RBI Noah Zavolas – 3 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BBs, 3 Ks JT Hintzen (Win) – 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 0 Ks Nash Walters – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BBs, 1 K Arnaldo Hernandez – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: The 16-17 Shuckers travel to face the 14-19 Mississippi Braves. LHP Nick Bennett (5.28 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 6.5 K/9 in 29 innings) is scheduled to get the first crack at the Mississippi lineup. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 11, Jacksonville 6 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Sounds Take Sixth Straight Series With Sunday Win Nashville had won five straight series entering this game and wasn’t ready to entertain any possibility of a 3-3 draw with Jacksonville this week, jumping out to a 4-0 first inning lead on two-out doubles by 3B Weston Wilson and OF Pablo Reyes. However, starting RHP Alec Bettinger is still rounding into 2022 form and was unfortunately roughed up in the 2nd inning (thus re-proving my rust theory), giving up three hits, a walk and sacrifice fly to quickly re-knot the contest at 4-4. RHP Luke Barker then served as an efficient bridge to innings-eater RHP Josh Lindblom, covering the 3rd inning before another Sounds’ barrage. Once again doing all their damage with two outs, Nashville posted another four runs in the 4th inning, including an RBI infield single by Tyler White (snapping an 0-for-27 skid) and a bases-clearing double by Wilson. Lindblom was his usual efficient self, allowing only two hits and two walks over five innings of work. SS Brice Turang had been in a mini-slump (0-for-10 before a first inning infield single), so his 7th inning two-RBI single extending the Sounds’ lead to 11-4 had to feel good. As if 11 runs weren’t enough, the scoreline could have ballooned much further if not for three tremendous defensive plays by the Jumbo Shrimp, which you can see on their twitter feed. Performances of Note: Weston Wilson – 3-5, 2 doubles, BB, 4 RBIs Pablo Reyes – 3-5, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, SB Alex Jackson – 2-5, double, SB Brice Turang – 2-6, 2 RBIs Jonathan Davis – 2-4, BB, HBP Abraham Almonte – 2-4, BB, HBP Andruw Monasterio – 1-4, BB Alec Bettinger – 2 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Luke Barker (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BBs, 0 Ks Josh Lindblom – 5 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 BBs, 5 Ks Trevor Kelley – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Next week’s outlook: Nashville (24-11) is home this week to take on the Louisville Bats (13-22). RHP Caleb Boushley (4.28 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 in 33 2/3 innings) is expected to make his 8th start of the year to open the series. We hope that you enjoy the Minor League Link Report.
