1. The 38-66 Shuckers travel to face 54-49 Pensacola this week. Kekai Rios is riding a 9-game hitting streak (across 2 MILB levels) and Korry Howell has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games: 1 - Hamilton - 2B 2 - Howell - SS 3 - Longo - CF 4 - Dillard - DH 5 - Palma - LF 6 - Spanberger - 1B 7 - Lutz - RF 8 - Holt - 3B 9 - Rios - C X - J. Castillo - P
2. The 56-52 Sounds host the 51-57 Memphis Redbirds this week, with Nashville reeling from dropping 5 of their last 6 games. Matt Lipka has been a bright spot (.797 OPS, 17 SBs):
3. 20-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle and 19-year old SS Eduardo Garcia make their Low-A debuts as the 63-45 Mudcats host their arch-rival 64-44 Down East:
4. The 52-55 Timber Rattlers have won 5 of 6 as they scratch and claw their way back to .500. They host 59-49 Cedar Rapids this week. 20-year old Carlos Rodriguez has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games:
5. Prospect on the move: - SS Eduardo Garcia promoted from ACL Gold to Low-A Carolina
6. - Undrafted rookie RHP Trevor Tietz assigned to ACL Gold.
7. Walk-off home run Sundays are fun! Let’s do this more often!!: - Darrien Miller grand slam - Joey Wiemer 3-run shot - Daniel Vogelbach grand slam Can’t wait to see what Nashville and Biloxi have in store!
8. Darrien Miller is turning out to be quite the draft pick. I believe he’s the only high schooler we’ve drafted in the top 10 rounds over the past 3 years. The 20-year old just hit a walk-off, 2-out extra inning grand slam for the Mudcats.
9. 22-year old Aussie catcher Alex Hall makes his High-A debut with the Timber Rattlers, which seek a 2nd straight win at home to close out this week’s series against Beloit: 1 - Rodriguez - CF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Wiemer - RF 4 - Warren - 3B 5 - Zamora - DH 6 - McClanahan - 1B 7 - L. Castillo - LF 8 - Hall - C 9 - Pinero - SS X - Shook - P
10. 19-year old RHP Brailin Rodriguez makes his Low-A debut for the Carolina Mudcats, along with 22-year old catcher Jose Sibrian, as the club tries to end a 3-game losing streak:
11. Korry Howell is coming around against AA pitching, with a 6-game hitting streak to raise his Biloxi OPS to .728. He and the Shuckers seek a second straight win: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - 3B 3 - Longo - CF 4 - Dillard - DH 5 - Palma - LF 6 - Spanberger - 1B 7 - Lutz - RF 8 - Holt - 2B 9 - Rios - C X - Zavolas - P
12. Ethan Small makes his third start for Nashville since returning from injury, as the squad look to repeat yesterday’s victory:
13. Zach Mort is on the mound, looking for his 4th win in his 4th start for Carolina, which needs to snap a 2-game skid:
14. - LHP Kelvin Bender released from ACL Blue in a surprise move - 21-year old Kelvin was a 17th round draft pick in 2019, signing for $125,000 out of Junipero Serra High School in California. After a rough 2019 and then Covid-cancelled 2020, his 2021 debut was also delayed due to injury and/or Covid. That said, he has a 0.66 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 13.2 innings this year, with 20 strikeouts! Similar to recently promoted fellow 2019 draft pick RHP Jefferson Figueroa, I really thought Kelvin was up for promotion to Carolina. That said, we wish him a world of success with whatever comes next.
15. Catcher Jose Sibrian promoted from ACL Blue to Low-A Carolina to support catching depth - Signed in 2015, he'd had a breakthrough 2019 with the Rocky Mountain Vibes (.727 OPS there), but was absent for most of 2021 MILB Spring Training and only started playing in Arizona in July this year, with things not going well (.513 OPS thus far)
16. The Timber Rattlers play the early game today, looking to bounce back from a close loss on Friday. Felix Valerio brings his 6-game hitting streak into the contest, along with a .929 OPS in 71 PAs in High-A: 1 - Frelick - CF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Wiemer - RF 4 - Warren - 3B 5 - Gray - LF 6 - McGee - 1B 7 - Zamora - SS 8 - Kahle - C 9 - L. Castillo - DH X - Bennett - P
17. Excellent call on Frelick. I like bumping this thread to discuss possible promotions. Gotta figure Tristan Peters gets the call to Carolina on Tuesday, as he’s hitting over .300 and they’re short-handed. There’s also the possibility of some players getting promoted to AAA Nashville for its last 10 games of the season, since Nashville and the DSL teams will be the only squads in action after September 19th (unless Carolina sneaks into the playoffs). Maybe a few guys like Mitchell, Howell, Hamilton, Lutz, Floyd, Luna (if recovered), Gray, Wiemer could see their seasons extended.
18. After 7 rough appearances in AAA, Andy Otero returns to AA Biloxi where he’d been so solid over 36.1 innings earlier this season: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Dillard - DH 5 - Spanberger - 1B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Holt - 2B 8 - Diaz - C 9 - Devanney - 3B X - Otero - P
19. Justin Jarvis is coming off one of his best outings (0 earned runs in 4.1 innings with 4 Ks last time out) and looks to lead Wisconsin to a 4th straight win: 1 - Frelick - CF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Warren - DH 4 - Gray - RF 5 - McGee - 1B 6 - Zamora - SS 7 - McClanahan - 3B 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Rodriguez - LF X - Jarvis - P
20. Carolina finds itself staring up at playoff position for the first time in months (0.5 games behind Salem), but on the bright side Micah Bello is enjoying his best run of the season (12 for his last 34, with a .941 OPS):
21. After dropping 3 straight, our AAA Nashville Sounds turn to Colin Rea to repeat his super performance last time out (0 runs, 5.2 innings, 9 Ks):
22. - LHP Antoine Kelly promoted from Low-A Carolina to High-A Wisconsin. - C Alex Hall promoted from Low-A Carolina to High-A Wisconsin.
23. David Fry makes his debut in AAA, as the Sounds try to win Game Two of their doubleheader today, having dropped the opener:
24. LHP Leoni De La Cruz promoted from DSL-1 to ACL Blue. Signed in June 2021, he’s already 23 years old, so was dominating the DSL youngins as expected (1.45 ERA, 29 Ks in 18.2 innings).
25. The Shuckers play their first game in 6 days. The top active streak here belongs to Tristen Lutz, who’s hit safely in his last 7 games: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Dillard - 1B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Holt - 3B 8 - Diaz - C 9 - Cantrelle - 2B X - Bullock - P
