1. Josh Lindblom makes his 12th start and 14th appearance for the Sounds, which should mean he’ll NOT be promoted in the coming days for an MLB spot start. He’s been dominant in AAA (1.37 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 9.3 K/9 in 59.1 innings):
2. Je’Von Ward gets a crack at the leadoff spot, as the Timber Rattlers aim to end a 4-game skid: 1 - Ward - LF 2 - Cantrelle - DH 3 - Gray - CF 4 - Dillard - 1B 5 - Lujano - RF 6 - McClanahan - 3B 7 - Coca - 2B 8 - Rios - C 9 - Pinero - SS X - F. Adames - P
3. The honor of starting Carolina’s final 2021 game against Kannapolis goes to TJ Shook. Ashton McGee (left game after hit-by-pitch 2 days ago) and Ernesto Martinez (last played on August 4th) remain absent:
4. The roster glut in the Arizona Complex League seems kind of silly when we’re so lean on position players at the next few levels. Amongst the guys sitting out today’s ACL game were Hedbert Perez, Eduardo Garcia, Jesus Chirinos, Eduarqui Fernandez, Jhonny Vargas… Meanwhile, Carolina’s Ashton McGee is likely recovering from yesterday’s hit-by-pitch and Ernesto Martinez hasn’t played in 3 days, Wisconsin has run into some offensive struggles recently and Biloxi has been short-handed all year. I understand not wanting to cut players amidst a bizarre Covid-affected season, but I don’t think promoting players up the chain would need to result in any cuts. At this point, it would honestly seem to just provide necessary breathers for some and more opportunity to play for others. Meanwhile, Kent Hasler (who’ll be 26 in October) just struck out 8 in 3.0 innings while giving up one hit and two intentional walks. I guess we’re really determined to capture that Carolina League (Low-A East) title…
5. Carlos Luna makes his third AA start for Biloxi, which tries to build off yesterday’s win: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Longo - CF 3 - Fry - 3B 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Castro - LF 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Diaz - C 8 - Devanney - 2B 9 - Aguilar - 1B X - Luna - P
6. Dylan File makes his third start for the Sounds, which have some work to do to make the AAA East playoffs (1.5 games behind Buffalo for wild card spot):
7. Joe Gray Jr. leads off for the Timber Rattlers, who are searching for their missing offense after losing 3 in a row: 1 - Gray - RF 2 - Dillard - 1B 3 - Howell - CF 4 - Ward - DH 5 - Cantrelle - 2B 6 - Rodriguez - LF 7 - Kahle - C 8 - McClanahan - 3B 9 - Pinero - SS X - Bennett - P
8. The Joey Wiemer show continues (9 for his last 13, with 3 homers, a double, 9 RBIs, 5 runs), as Carolina goes for a 4th straight win:
9. RHP Edwin Jimenez promoted from DSL-2 to ACL Blue. Venezuelan born December 2001, signed 2018, debuted with decent 2019, terrific in 4 appearances this year. https://www.milb.com/player/edwin-jimenez-683720
10. AA Biloxi has also commenced its game against Pensacola, looking to build on yesterday’s big win. Noah Zavolas (5.40 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 8.5 K/9) makes his 16th start for the Shuckers:
11. The Timber Rattlers are under way, looking to even up this Beloit series at 2 games a piece. Korry Howell makes his 9th start of the season at shortstop (vs. 48 in OF, 9 at 3B). Victor Castaneda makes his 14th start (3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 10.2 K/9):
12. AAA Nashville also aims for its 3rd consecutive victory. They’ve corrected the earlier lineup graphic, now showing Brice Turang at his customary SS position. Alec Bettinger makes his 13th appearance and 11th start for the Sounds this year (3.76 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 9.9 K/9): 1 - Reyes - 2B 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Green - DH 4 - Vogelbach - 1B 5 - Ray - CF 6 - Stokes Jr. - RF 7 - Lipka - LF 8 - Kramer - 3B 9 - Feliciano - C X - Bettinger - P
13. The Mudcats seek their 3rd straight win, as last night’s hero OF Joey Wiemer (4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) will bat 6th:
14. Aaron Ashby has been most effective as a starter and is on the mound to start Nashville’s game tonight:
15. Starting pitcher Justin Bullock makes his second AA start for Biloxi, which aims to snap a 4-game losing streak:
16. Starting pitcher Justin Jarvis returns from injury as the Timber Rattlers try to bounce back from yesterday’s loss:
17. Been in transit, so quick and brief for these. Brandon Knarr has K’d 45 over his last 5 starts and goes for his 7th win for Carolina:
18. The Sounds outhit the Mud Hens in the opener today, but left 9 on base and took a loss. Weston Wilson (team lead 16 home runs) once again powers the lineup for Game Two:
19. Jesus Castillo looks for his third straight victory for Biloxi, which needs to snap a 3-game skid: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Mitchell - CF 3 - Longo - LF 4 - Palma - DH 5 - Fry - C 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Castro - 1B 8 - G. Garcia - 3B 9 - Devanney - 2B X - J. Castillo - P
20. After losing the opening game today, Jhoan Cruz takes the ball for the Carolina Mudcats in Game Two tonight. He’s been on a decent 5-game stretch (2.92 ERA, 22 Ks in 24.2 innings, albeit with a .790 OPS against):
21. Dustin Peterson has quietly been terrific for Nashville (.763 OPS, 19 BBs vs. 17 Ks in 169 PAs). He’s hitting third in Game One of today’s doubleheader against the Toledo Mud Huns:
22. After a great comeback win yesterday (from down 5-0 after 5 innings), Joey Matulovich makes his second High-A start and goes for his second win for Wisconsin: 1 - Howell - SS 2 - Pinero - 3B 3 - Gray - CF 4 - Dillard - 1B 5 - L. Castillo - DH 6 - Lujano - LF 7 - Kahle - C 8 - McClanahan - RF 9 - Coca - 2B X - Matulovich - P
23. RHP Nick Belzer placed on Carolina’s 7-day injured list. I don’t believe there’s been any word on LHP Jason Munsch, who hasn’t played since July 14th.
24. After a rainout yesterday, the first place Mudcats (3.0 game lead over Down East) will play TWO today against Kannapolis. Felix Valerio (9-for-27, .923 OPS, 9 RBIs in last 6 games) and Gabe Holt (10-for-38, .882 OPS, 10 runs in last 8 games) are heating up and lead the Mudcats in Game One:
25. Initial assignments for 5 of our top ten draft picks: - OF Sal Frelick - ACL Gold - 3B Alex Binelas - ACL Gold - SS Ethan Murray - ACL Blue - 2B Zack Raabe - ACL Gold - 1B Wes Clarke - ACL Blue
