  1. I've got a pretty strong affinity for the ole pari-mutuels, stemming back to going to jai-alai matches or to play the dogs back when I was growing up in Florida. I do enjoy a trip to the OTB. That said, I'd have a real hard time cashing in a winning exacta that includes an animal that had to be euthanized immediately after the race, whether it's the Run for the Roses or the 4th race from Santa Anita on a Thursday afternoon. Awful.
  2. I lived in Sarasota from 1984 to 1996, St. Pete from 1996 to 1997, and then came back for a year after finishing college in Beloit, living in St. Pete again from 1999 to 2000. I grew up watching ST down there (White Sox) and was really excited when the Rays first started playing and got bitter pretty quickly. I went all the time in the '99 and '00 ("Hit Show") seasons since it was a 20 min. walk from my apartment and cost $5 to get in the place.
  3. I'm amazed they only scored 5 runs in that inning
  4. Looks like the Crew was 23-24 when Rodgers got fired, my bad
  5. They were more than one game under .500 when Rodgers got fired, if I remember correctly I don't know how we could compare the two situations anyway, especially now that Gallardo's gone
  6. So Bush isn't starting in Florida? What's this now
  7. I can't believe it took Ned that long to get someone to warm up Wait, Bush is warming up?!?
  8. Oh God, cue the back-to-back-to-back now
  9. Yeah, I'm sick of seeing the freaking pitcher go deep on this team
  10. I'm glad you said the Rockies...they're my #2, with the Marlins very close thereafter The Pirates, Nationals, and Jays logos are all awful as well; these teams can all (and mostly have done in the past) better I also hate the A's logo, but it has history, I suppose. My #1, which I have special hatred for, is the embarrassing and racist Cleveland Indians logo. This still shocks me that people can feel OK rooting for a team with that logo (It shocked me even more when I saw a bunch of white guys with the grinning Indian logo painted on their face last ALDS/ALCS...shades of Jolson and the only time I have ever rooted for the Red Sox). To end it on a less controversial note, I really love the Brewers logo...I know many find it dull and too close to the "Cheers" logo, but I think it fits like a glove, and the M and barley shaft hat are both appropriate and stylish
  11. The key, obviously in this crackerjack box they've got down there, is the long ball I think if Manny can keep it to only one or so, and give us his usual 5 2/3, we've got a good shot
  12. I'm really loving the ideas that are bieng thrown out here on this thread page (although I still believe that Lincecum is a near-impossibility even if the Giants lose 100 games--him and Cain are the primary reasons to be Giants fans right now and the Giants and their fans would need an actual major league star, not TGJ, to accept any Lincecum trade), but I still think it's way too early for either the Brewers or any other team to make any deal like this. Thread should be put on ice until late June...we'll see where we're at, we'll know where they're at. (Greg Maddux in a Brewers uniform with his brother sounded good a few years ago and sounds even better now, though. Hmmmmmm)
  13. They should've stuck with their initial instinct to name them the "Rays" from day one: adding the "Devil" always struck me as odd...as a cheesehead who spent his formative years down there, I can tell you that the first time I ever really heard about a "Devil Ray" was the day they named the team. Everyone called them rays or stringrays. At any rate, talk about a team that needed a makeover. It was a relatively simple thing, but important, I feel. I would put changing the name up there with getting rid of Chuck "Hedy" LaMar and the short-sighted, overbearing (but necessary) ownership of Vince Naimoli as three of the four steps required to make the Rays a feasible franchise. Last and biggest is moving out of the Trop.
  14. I agree, and of course it follows what was likely the best. I just re-read this and realized how bad it accidentally sounded...for the record, I with-hold judgment as to what the best day of the season will be...hopefully some time in mid-September when the Crew wins the division. I still honestly believe it's possible given our lineup and Ben and our vet Soup and Villy and the rest, and hope the team does, too.
  15. I agree, and of course it follows what was likely the best. Of course, it could've been worse: I thought when Valverde hit Prince in the side of the knee that we were gonna see our second star of the day go down All you can do is brush it off and hope Manny can put a decent effort in tomorrow. Oswalt's out of the way and Big Ben pitches Sunday: we can still take this series. That said, I really am off to get a bourbon now. Uff da, what a day.
  16. Never mind, I'm just gonna go rub a cheese-grater against my knuckles instead
  17. Just came back from "work" to ask if anybody else with Extra Innings getting an awful, awful feed from FSN Houston tonight? Or is it my local provider?
  18. I just put my tie back on and am headed back to the station...for a couple bourbons
  19. Well, this is the icing on my Brewers' Day I really hate that joke of a stadium (unless, of course, it's our guys hitting goofballs out of that bandbox)
  20. I swear I hadn't gotten home from work, turned on the tube and sat down with an adult beverage for 2 minutes before that happened. Maybe I should turn around and go back to work.
  21. That surprises me...his velocity was way off after he came back for that last inning
  22. Well speaking for myself, I was more about laying blame on the trainer and to a lesser extent, Ned, until they announced it was a complete tear. I'm sure someone will try and claim that it might've just been a partial tear until Ned let him pitch his way to a complete tear, but the fact that he didn't really feel much pain would indicate that it was completely torn right away. I still have to question the wisdom of leaving him in--why even take the chance at this stage in the season when he clearly hyper-extended it. I know the trainer doesn't have access to MRI equipment on the field, but it seems strange that he didn't or couldn't pick up that something was wrong. We all thought it was awesome when he stayed in, apparently unhurt. It seemed like a miracle that he was OK--turned out just a mirage.
