  1. You can say Martinez is over-hyped until you are blue in the face, but that doesn't change his age or production in AAA this year. The games I watched him play this year it certainly looked like there was a lot of talent in him. I love Lawrie, but Martinez is only 15 months older than Lawrie and producing better numbers at a much higher level of competition. At this point, an argument could be made very easily that Martinez is the better prospect. Personally, I would take Lawrie but it is anything but an easy decision. I also think Parnell and Niese are both pitchers that will have long careers barring injury. Niese is a nice lefty that pitched well in AA and AAA last year as a 21 year old, that gives him more value than Cody. Parnell has a lot of potential and I would take him over Axford. I would probably take Scarpetta over Tejada, although the way Tejada has been rushed thus far there may be a lot of room for improvement offensively from him.
  2. Not all SS prospects, even if close to major league ready are going to come up and have immediate success. JJ is a known commodity and would be an excellent fit for Boston. They just got rid of Lugo and Lowrie hasn't exactly set the world on fire in his initial 80 games of his career. I think it makes a lot of sense. Also, if Boston would be willing to package one of their young arms in a deal rather than Lowrie, I can't imagine Toronto would be too upset about not getting the major league ready SS.
  3. Hardy might be available in "the right deal" suggests to me the Brewers are trying to get a third team involved, perhaps the Red Sox. Red Sox get Hardy and send some prospects along with some Brewers' prospects to Toronto. Halladay becomes a Brewer.
  4. Wil Myers is my pick. If he is not there, I'd take Everett Williams.
  5. I went to the Timber Rattlers game and Watten looked excellent. He was around the plate most of the game. He located his fastball well and showed what appeared to be a tight curveball on a couple of pitches that had sharp break. This may have been a slider, but it seemed more like a curve ball from my vantage point. Either way it was a nice pitch that really threw the timing off of the hitters. Kemp really stung the ball with both of his hits. As well as Watten pitched, Correa looked even better for the Kernels. He had nice pop on his fastball, the readings showed low 90's, and my guess would be that it was accurate. It was a very enjoyable game to watch two pitchers throwing so well. One other note, Marseco is even smaller in person than I had anticipated.
  6. Gerut missed parts of many seasons because of knee injuries. I am not sure if it was the same knee, and I don't feel like looking it up. The last procedure on his right knee was thought to be career-ending.
  7. I kept a close on eye on Cards' games last fall hoping to watch Motte pitch. He has the arm and the crazy reliever thing going for him. I also like Perez, but from what I saw of Motte last September he looked like the better closer option for them. I would prefer either one over Salome.
  8. Wily Mo Pena, Kearns, or Willingham should be available. I would love to have a bat like Willingham on the bench, but my guess is he would be the least likely of the three to be dealt.
  9. Watch him pitch sometime and you will see why many are high on him. The strike outs are a very good inidcator of how good he can be; the control is the only thing that has held him back. He has a very good fastball that has good sink and a good changeup. When he has good control he is great to watch. The other thing that has hampered his development is the jerking around he has had to deal with from the Giants. Last year they finally just let him pitch out of the rotation and not shockingly he had his best year.
  10. It makes some sense to place Salome ahead of Gamel, although I would not have them ranked that way. If Salome plays even an adequate catcher and hits to his potential that would quite possibly provide more value than Gamel playing first base. Law clearly thinks Gamel has no chance of staying at third, while leaving open the possibility of Salome staying behind the plate.

  13. I like Law more than Baseball America. I was surprised at how low he had Gamel, especially with LaPorta coming in at 27. I cannot argue about the placements of the other Brewers' prospects. He gives very reasonable support for all his rankings. I also agree with him on the Cards being a top ten organization. They have a lot of players in their top ten that I like a lot, including Rasmus, Wallace, Motte, and Perez who I think can all play big roles for them this year.

  16. I have never been the biggest fan of Hardy, but I have to admit that as of now he would definitely be among the top 5 SS in all of baseball. The only three that I would definitely place ahead of him are Ramirez, Reyes, and Rollins. Drew would be close, but other than that I would take Hardy over Jeter, Tulo, Escobar, Furcal, Young, Tejada, and every other SS.
  17. I think the problem Melvin faces with dealing Cameron is there are few options out there. It isn't because Cameron isn't any good, he is. The problem lies with possible suitors. Here is a list of teams .500 or better from last year and their internal options for CF. TB-Upton Boston-Ellsbury Toronto-Wells/Rios Twins-Gomez/Span Cleveland-Sizemore White Sox-? LAA-Hunter/Matthews Phillies-Victorino Mets-Beltran Flordia-Maybin/Ross Cubs-? Houston-Bourn Cards-Ankiel/Rasmus LAD-Kemp/Andruw/Pierre Arizona-Young/Upton Either those teams have a better player than Cameron in CF, have a cheaper/younger player who was recently a top prospect, or are slashing payroll. Unless Melvin wants to deal with the Cubs or the White Sox move a bit more salary I just think the list of suitors for Cameron are limited to the Yankees.
  18. Wigginton is robotic at third. At his size he is only going to get worse defensivley.
  19. From the Seattle Times http://blog.seattletimes...._to_set_closers_mark.html Possible Brewers' interest in a larger deal with names thrown out like Putz and Morrow interesting the Brewers. From the article The Brewers, as we've mentioned before. desperately need starting and bullpen help and would be interested in a Putz deal. But that could come, I'm told, as part of a larger package. The Brewers have a ton of bats (literally) that could be moved in first baseman Prince Fielder, shortstop J.J. Hardy, Class AAA third baseman Mat Gamel, minor league shortstop Alcides Escobar and outfield prospects Lorenzo Cain and Cole Gillespie. But as I said, that looks like it would be all part of a larger, multiple-player deal. The Brewers like many of Seattle's starting pitchers as well, with Brandon Morrow topping the list. Anyhow, right now, it's all just a concept. But it's one worth keeping an eye on.
  20. AJ Burnett opted out this year.
  21. No thanks on Atkins, unless it is cheap, very cheap. His OPS from 2005-08 looks like .648/.933/.773/.661 on the road. He had a monster season in 2006, but those other numbers make me think I would rather just sign a guy like Casey Blake or Blalock and get similar production that Atkins would provide without having to trade for them.
  22. I doubt the Pads would want Gamel as a centerpiece since they already have Headley and Kouzmanoff, two hitters that can play third base and do so poorly just like Gamel. I would think Escobar or Jeffress, probably Escobar would have to be dealt. I would be hesitant to adding Peavy. The contract is good if he remains healthy and he always seems to be a guy nursing a problem with his arm, although thus far nothing major. It also concerns me, as others have noted, his home/road splits. From 2005-07 his road ERA was 3.73 and last year was 4.28, fortunately for him he has pitched 105 more innings the past 4 seasons at home than on the road to help his overall numbers look that much better.
  23. The kids usually keep me busy until 8:00-8:30 each night, but after that I watch any baseball that is on. I have always watched a ton of Dodgers' games and have found myself watching a lot of Rockies and DBacks games as well late in the night. Other teams that I would watch were the Reds, Rays, Angels, and whenever a good young pitcher was throwing, I rarely missed a Lincecum start if the Brewers weren't playing at the same time and if they were I did a lot of channel swapping. I have had DirecTV since they first began offerring Sunday Ticket and up until last year I had always been a subscriber to the Ticket and Extra Innings. I am no longer getting the Ticket, but will still continue to get Extra Innings for a long time.
  24. If some of the teams with guys like Greinke, Cain, Lincecum, etc... want LaPorta I think it is quite obvious he is available and they would be in contact with Melvin.
  25. I would like to see any of the following DBacks become Brewers(guys that I think might be realisitic): Pena, Cruz, Owings, Drew, Bonifacio, and would love to get Scherzer( a bit more unrealistic, but using LaPorta as the bait might get some interest).
