  1. Good job, Tobias. Pen not terribly taxed, even if we probably go down in this one.
  2. Regarding Perkins, he may be scuffling at the plate a little bit, but remember he was the hero of the first game against the Mets series by throwing out the tying run at the plate to end the game. Plus, by all accounts, he is one of the clubhouse leaders. But, yes, Chourio would help
  3. Now there's some interesting bullpen usage decisions. Have to think Mears is on for the 7th. After that? Guess it depends on whether we've continued to peck away.
  4. So now that this is winnable, do you run Patrick out there another inning? I say let him go until any trouble - still want to keep the pen as fresh as possible, but it's a harder choice now. Edit: Guess not
  5. I mean, it is a tough game for Patrick to be thrown into - that's hard to debate. But, there are no better options with 5 games in 4 days (I look at it as 6 games in 5, meaning the SP from game 1 - Quintana - is not available for game 6 like he would be in a normal 6 in 6 schedule). I also am slightly concerned about having the possibility of two short-ish starts (Patrick for effectiveness and Woodruff to save his long-term workload) today, and another one with Miz tomorrow. The injury to Hall was quite unfortunate at this particular point in time. We would have been better off with 3 long relievers in the pen for this series.
  6. Anatomy of how the Brewers are doing this. I give you the Brewers' 4-run 8th: ground out walk walk walk infield hit - 70 mph exit velo that the 2B had to roam far to his left into the outfield grass and throw was late to get Ortiz at first (run scored, bases still loaded, 1 out) 80 mph line drive single over the outstretched glove of the 2B (run scored, bases still loaded, 1 out) 51 mph grounder to short that forced out the runner at second but no DP (run scored, 1st and 3rd, two outs) stolen base (2nd and 3rd, two outs) wild pitch (run scored) walk groundout That's 4 runs on 2 singles that weren't hard hit, and an opposing fanbase shaking their head at the luck merchants from behind the Cheese Curtain. For us, this kind of production is almost a daily occurrence,
  7. Division: 30 CHC (Moose Haas) #1 seed: 31 PHL Top 2 seed: 30 CHC, LAD Top wild card spot: 30 LAD (28 for SDP - one of these will be the division winner) Any wild card spot: 24 CIN Next team to be eliminated (currently Washington): 10 and for the people who won’t rest until the Cards are eliminated, our magic number on them is currently 20 (Gorman Thomas)
  8. Henderson's not close to returning from what's been reported. Late September/early October is what I saw.
  9. If tonight's game gets postponed, I expect the Cubs to move the DH to Wednesday. That does maximum screwage to the Brewers rotation with Miz slated to go that day for probably a shortish outing. Woodruff is supposed to go tomorrow - we couldn't have Patrick go instead because he's the 27th guy and could only pitch during a DH day. If the Cubs do try to do this, they could put Anderson down again to keep Patrick up for tomorrow, and then go Woodruff/Miz on Wednesday. Decisions and gamesmanship...
  10. As someone who had an oblique strain like a decade ago (appeared while golfing, which ended my round immediately), I have no idea how you could be a professional pitcher with that. I could barely find a comfortable position to just breathe. And then, it left, and hasn't reappeared.
  11. I’m hoping all is well with the Perkins and Collins families - these life events > anything baseball, so (I’m guessing) it’s time well spent for the players. Everyone has things going on that distract them, but some things are harder to compartmentalize. Get right fellas. But, we could use you if you’re up to it.
  12. The playoffs are about getting hot at that exact moment in time. I don't think being hot now or worrying about letting up if they clinch early is really worth worrying about. Give me health above anything else.
  13. I haven’t been paying attention enough to know if the special bats, cleats, etc that are showing up this weekend for “players’ weekend” are normally disallowed. The “Uecker bat” deserves to live on .
  14. Division: 33 CHC #1 seed: 34 PHL Top 2 seed: 33 CHC, LAD, SDP Top wild card spot: 33 CHC, LAD, SDP Any wild card spot: 27 CIN Next team to be eliminated (currently Washington): 13
  15. With the upcoming 5 games in 4 days and a couple of our starters who are limited in length, I think having Myers, Hall, and Ashby available for long relief or spot starts is wise.
  16. The race for the 2-5 seeds is separated by a single game right now - makes the secondary magic numbers bunch up a bit. Division: 35 CHC #1 seed: 35 CHC, PHL, SDP Top 2 seed: 35 CHC, PHL, SDP Top wild card spot: 35 CHC, PHL, SDP Any wild card spot: 29 CIN Next team to be eliminated (currently Washington): 15
  17. Things definitely can still change. Looking at the last 10 games column on the standings, we were 10-0 and the Cubs 4-6. I don’t have to mansplain the math there. Long way yet,
  18. If I'm a Cubs fan, first off, shoot me, but second, I'm a little conflicted about how I want the Brewers series to go with the Reds. CIN is closer to catching the Cubs than the Cubs are to catching the Brewers. Let's see where we are after Sunday. Things might get tighter.
  19. Division: 36 CHC #1 seed: 36 CHC, PHL Top 2 seed: 36 CHC, PHL Top wild card spot: 35 SDP Any wild card spot: 29 CIN Next team to be eliminated (currently Washington): 15 Pirates making a bid to - I was going to say “overtake” the Nats. Is it “undertake “? Anyway, getting swept by the Brewers has put them at only 1 magic number behind WAS.
  20. Somehow, the optimism thread underestimated this team...
  21. Besides the two runs, we upped the pitch count on Keller pretty good there. Should be getting in to their pen in the 6th.
  22. This is the point. I doubt many of the people posting here view a free burger as worth the time and effort on its own. When you factor in experiencing the shared joy into the equation, it's less of a no-brainer. These moments are pretty rare, and it's a magnificent thing that this business makes it possible.
  23. Ohtani hit into a triple play last night - lineout to short, step on 2nd, throw to first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vQ94x2TPOI
  24. Every win in that series is worth 2 on the magic number countdown on the baby bears. Here's to skipping multiple numbers...
