    To answer the question about Miz's workload, I'm 60/40 against trying to get him 2 more starts before the ASB. I love having him on the mound in any game, and 4 days rest is "normal" (this is the 40 side of me talking). But I rather avoid the wear and tear from going that often for the long haul. And it might mean he wouldn't get to pitch in the ASG - I'm ok with that (again to avoid the wear and tear), but it would kinda suck for him personally and really for MLB, too. Furthermore, if they don't use Stallings today, they could use him to start a game in AZ and give all the starters an extra day during this grueling stretch. Edit - I now see they've announced Harrison/Woodruff/Sproat for the Az series - so much for my idea

    A little surprised with this, TBH. They haven't been pitching him on 4-day rest for a while now, presumably with an eye toward long-term preservation. Selfishly, I wouldn't really mind him not pitching the ASG...

    Stallings should be added to the grid (I think - they might try to start him in AZ). He would be the most logical option if Drohan can't cover through the 6th.

    Well, if Gasser does get called in to pitch one of the doubleheader games, the rule is that the "27th man" has to go back down to the minors immediately afterwards. Plus, they're likely to call up Henderson next week and someone else will have to go down, too. I wonder if they can get through this Reds series without using Stallings that they might have him make a start in Arizona - perhaps Friday? - and push the rest of the rotation down a day. Then keep him in the pen for the STL series until Henderson comes back, and then send him back down, If we do that, then the rotation for the 3-gamer in PIT is Harrison/Henderson (whoever doesn't pitch the final game in STL), Woodruff, and Sproat. That means we could use Drohan in long relief after his start in STL - he's pretty likely to be in that role after the ASB anyway. Not sure having Stallings start a game is a good idea, though - the bullpen may need his arm more than we need to have starters resting.

    Not clear what you think they won't do. The rotation should be set up for Woodruff/Sproat/Drohan in PIT, though that Sunday-before-ASB always has possibilities for one-inning appearances by guys like Miz or Harrison (probably not Henderson, but who knows).

    Not always - there was one exchange I remember where during a lull in the action, the color guy asked if Ueck was packing extra underwear for the long road trip they were about to go on. "Naah, I just turn'em inside out." To this day, I can't stop shaking my head laughing thinking about that response - maybe it was so quick because it was true. Maybe others don't see the humor in it at all, but it was perfect for his brand/persona to me.

    Interesting. This is not a name I've heard discussed. They could still bring Gasser back for one of the DH games in STL next Tuesday.

    Looks like it's necessary to grind through this one without Ashby. Patrick, or Megill, I'd really prefer if one of the 3 back-end starters went to the pen after this series. We're on game 5 of the 18 in 17 stretch, and it's already a problem to have only 7 in the pen.

    It’s a matter of perspective. For me, I’m overall ecstatic with the results, and that’s the bottom line. No team goes half a season with everything always at peak performance. It’s a very competitive team that finds ways to stack Ws. I find even more satisfaction doing this with the budgetary constraints. When it comes to the postseason, I have hope, but not expectations. It’s just the way it is Once in a great while, perhaps once in a lifetime, the stars align and a Leicester wins the Premier League. It does happen, but it is far more likely the teams with a bevy of high priced superstars will win most of the time. Until the rules change (and not holding my breath), we’re more like Leicester than Liverpool.

    That doesn't address the issue - you can only have a max of 13 pitchers on the roster.

    Again, the trouble with a 6-man rotation is only 7 in the pen. Extra rest for your starters ‘= extra burden on the relievers. Regardless, I do think it’s wise to not overuse Miz in particular.

    The issue with the 6-man rotation is the 7-man bullpen - we've got Patrick, Ashby, Anderson, Koenig, Uribe, and Megill as 6 of them. One of Gasser/Sproat/Drohan has to join them now, or two of them if they truly are going to 5-man. And one of them has to go to AAA when Henderson returns.

    That's probably just me favoring Gasser as he seems the more "established" at the big-league level. I was surprised the Brewers weren't using him as the starter on Sunday. It's not a clear-cut decision about who should be the 5th starter.

    Some off-day guessing about how to manage this stretch: 6/26 - 6/28 CHC: Miz, Harrison, Woodruff. The article about this weekend's probables says that Gasser is available for some innings before rejoining the rotation in the Cincy series, which is ... confusing if they're really doing a 5-man rotation. More logically, they'd move one of Sproat/Drohan/Gasser to long relief and out of the rotation. 6/29-7/2 CIN: Guessing Sproat, Drohan, (Gasser?), Miz. I've already blown the 5-man rotation here, but I'd also guess that Drohan gets moved to long relief in the next series. 7/3-5 @ARI: Harrison, Woodruff, Sproat - or Henderson? If Henderson does come up (and this would be on the early side), I would think Sproat or Drohan go down. If it's Sproat, let him pitch this one and then go down 7/6, 7/7 x2, 7/8, and 7/9 @ STL: Gasser (possibly Henderson pushes in here, which moves everyone back a day) on the 6th and Miz for one of the games on the 7th. The other game? Yeah, too early to tell what the situation will be and who they call up - maybe Crow. The last two might be Harrison and Woodruff, each on 4 days rest. 7/10-12 @PIT If Miz does pitch on the 7th, then Sunday the 12th would be his spot - not ideal if he's going to throw an inning at the ASG. If you go back to the Cincy series and throw him in game 3, then he could go on game one of the Cards series and Saturday of this series

    With the surplus of starting pitching (at least in quantity), do you see the Brewers using those assets in potential deadline trades? How does the looming potential for a lockout in 2027 factor into the equation - more aggressive or no impact?

    We aren't talking as much about today's starter, Drohan, in this thread, but arguments can be made for him, too. There was a time there where the consensus was he was currently #3 (no Woody/Henderson, and Gasser/Crow spot-starting). I view him as more of a battler than the others, meaning his stuff isn't necessarily top-end, but he is a bit crafty.

    I'd be a little surprised if he's hurt, but ??? Anderson's role seems to be in lower leverage situations or when they've exhausted other preferred options (certainly Patrick and Ashby are ahead of him in line). Those situations are going to happen, but they're thankfully less frequent, because that often means mop-up duty while hoping the bats can mount a comeback. I agree he's been a worthy performer in this role, though - just don't want to have to make him "the man".

    The off day tomorrow helps this situation, but it'd be nice to be able to use Anderson and Yoho today in reasonable situations. Just don't think Uribe, in particular, should be available here, and probably not Ashby either. Would like to preserve Patrick, too, but an inning would be ok.

    Current records against NL Central teams (Brewers scheduled for 16 more games - including today - with division foes up to the ASB): MKE 10-3 STL 12-8 CHI 8-9 PIT 13-10 CIN 2-15 (YIKES)

    If you accept 1) that the top 4 starters when healthy are Miz, Harrison, Woodruff, and Henderson, and 2) there will be a 5-man rotation, then you have Sproat, Gasser, and Drohan (and I guess Crow), as the contenders for that final spot (and had Priester been able to go, it’d have been him). Of those options, Sproat might have both the highest ceiling and lowest floor - as others have said, a work in progress. Last night was great, but has the light come on for consistency? My choice of those options is Gasser, but it is not a strongly held belief.

    You might know better, but my google search returned this, which it says came from baseball-reference.com: Advance notice: If the second game is scheduled at least 48 hours in advance, the 27th man can be used for both games; if less than 48 hours, the 27th man can only be used for the second game

    As if I know anything, but, googling... It looks like they just have to be on the 40-man roster, and they have to go back to the minors the next day, Doesn't look like the minimum stay in the minors after being sent down is a thing for the double header 27th man. They can also pitch in both games (though not sure how advisable that is).

    The whole roster management for the pitchers is interesting. I do think Koenig for Yoho makes sense, even if to just get another lefty out there. If Sproat does ok tonight, I could see them squeezing another outing out of him next week to give Miz and Harrison another day's rest during this upcoming stretch. Then you have the possibility of Henderson (if all goes well) returning during the long road trip - I imagine that puts Sproat down to AAA, but you also add the one-day arm to the roster for the double header day in StL, which if all goes well, could be Crow (or alternatively, Sproat again). I'm feeling pretty good about upcoming depth at SP after the ASB (if all goes well), but what to do with those being bumped from the rotation is cloudy to me. I hope all goes well.

    Not loving the bullpen situation to get us through tomorrow's game. Anderson and Yoho might have to eat a few innings tonight.

    Besides the obvious boost Woodruff brought with his stellar performance last night - and here’s to good health for the big fella - the less discussed benefit is just his veteran presence in the clubhouse. Team leader.
