  1. I just wanted to bump this up, because Cousins has now gone 17 appearances and 18 innings without surrendering an earned run, to go along with 26 Ks. He may get mostly non-high-leverage work, but even so, this is going practically unnoticed.
  2. I had to look up how to calculate a magic number and it's different from what I thought. The formula is (# of games remaining for the leading team + 1) - ((# of losses for trailing team) - (# of losses for leading team)). So as of this morning, Aug. 18, the Brewers have played 120 games, leaving 42 games left. Add 1, which is 43. Difference in losses: Cin 9 (Magic number 34) StL 10 (Magic number 33 - Stl has played 2 fewer games than MKE, which explains why the magic number isn't lower) Cubs 22 (Magic number 21) Pitt 31 (Magic number 12) Wild card contenders (one of each group will win their division): Atl 9 (34) Phi 11 (32) NYM 13 (30) SF -5 (48) LAD -1 (44) SD 8 (35)
  3. Looking forward a little, the Twins have been performing better lately, winning series against the likes of TB, Chisox, and the trashcan bangers. We don't get them until the end of next week, and they'll be playing the NYY and Bosox as a lead-in to our series, but thought I should note that they are looking perhaps like a harder test than anticipated.
  4. The Surprising Cause of Muscle Cramps — It’s Not Dehydration Yeah, I didn't understand that. I understand the cures/preventive steps they suggest, though, so drink some pickle juice, Brett! (yuk - it might not be worth it)
  5. Let's hope Mr. Anderson remembers to hydrate - leaving due to cramps in the middle of a gem was not ideal last time out.
  6. We've got 3 guys in the pen who didn't pitch yesterday - Norris, Milner, and Topa. One of those guys is going to at least start the 9th, whenever that occurs.
  7. Someone can correct me, but I think Ashby was up as an extra spot that MLB allows for doubleheaders. If Curtiss goes on the IL, that gets you back to the non-doubleheader roster limit. So, if they're bringing up Lindblom, someone else has to go down. This is the last series at Wrigley this season, so if they had to postpone tonight, they would probably try to do a doubleheader tomorrow (so, back to doubleheader roster size). The next series for the Brewers is at Pittsburgh, which isn't that long a flight, so another game tomorrow, while not ideal, isn't that much of a killer travel-wise.
  8. If it looks like the storms start at 8'ish, I'd prefer they hold off the start time. But if it looks like they will start on time and then go into a delay, it might be an interesting strategy to have a long reliever/opener start the game and then have Burnes come in after the delay. The risk is that most of the relievers were used yesterday (though Sanchez only threw one pitch, and Cousins 9), and someone like Norris could put you in a hole. But it might be better than having Burnes only go two and then relying on the pen for 7.
  9. Where it makes a difference is the potential severity of the illness. Perhaps a young healthy guy like Hader is unlikely to get the bad outcomes, but it's significantly more likely than if he did get the shot.
  10. Don't think so - this is Toussaint's 3rd appearance and 3rd start this year, and he was at least into the 7th both times (SD & PHI).
