    It appears Murphy’s going with a 3-man rotation with Pratt, Ortiz, and ol’ Bunty. Pratt and Joey have been the hotter bats, but getting every third day off is good for keeping the tank full, at least.

    I’m a little more surprised it was Stallings and not Hall. He and Harrison both on their way, so a temp assignment for Stallings, I’d assume.

    Yesterday was our 5th starter (when Harrison returns) and two arms not in the top 5 of bullpen options. We need these guys to make it to the end of the season, but they’re unlikely to be featured performers in the postseason. I would still like them to go get a top starter, but using yesterday’s performance as a justification is disingenuous. Also, despite their horrific record, Colorado has a better than average offense. If you want to be concerned about anything from yesterday, it should be the rather anemic effort against the league’s worst pitching, by far.

    Just looking at the Rox OPS's and their lineup is potent (of course, gotta take Coors into account), Where they fall down is runs allowed - currently in dead last at 596 (MKE is at 381). They've also allowed 1,048 hits - 2nd worst is at 949, and the Brewers are at 2nd best at 741.

    Sugano is 5-0 in his last 6 starts - pretty impressive for a team 22 games below .500.

    Not criticizing you, per se, but I think this is too simplistic a way of looking at things - at least for a position player. Starting Pitchers? Yes. Everyone else? No - I suppose you can make the argument that the C is the most influential position player, but they still are way below the impact of the SP. Everyone agrees Contreras is the preferred starter. But you need to have a backup, and Sanchez is a better backup than most (if he could just stop patting his head uncontrollably...)

    The expansion of the number of Wild Card teams makes it harder for teams to make the decision to be sellers. The coveted players from Detroit, Minnesota, San Diego, and especially Boston may not be actually available depending on how they do over the next week or so. That makes the pool of targets shallower. I'm glad I'm not the GM. My biggest want is a power hitter, but I don't think there are many out there.

    I think they still need to make a 40-man roster decision with Hall coming off IL. Might be wrong about that, though.

    Is there any way they keep Wilson? I kind of like what he brings, but when Hall comes back, somebody has to go a) from the big-league roster, and b) from the 40-man. Anyone on the 40-man DFA'able instead?

    I want to argue with this, but I fear it’s not wrong. Just hoping it’s not even worse than this.

    Purely subjectively (though seeing how you operate, this may inspire something backed up objectively), the Brewers seem to prefer a bullpen with multiple arms that can go multiple innings, some of them used as often as 3 times a week. I remember having multi-inning guys in the past - Hader was one for a while - but not the sheer depth of them that we have now. That starts with Patrick and Ashby, but we currently also have Anderson, Wilson, and McCullers, with DL Hall about to come back. That ability to use one pitcher for say, two innings, is really useful in managing workload.

    What I'm kind of amazed by is being 10th in IP - admittedly, I don't pay attention to any other team, but it sure seems like we use our pen a lot. And doing the math, it's been almost 4 innings per game in the last 73, which also seems like a lot (the first 26 needed nearly 5 IP/game!). My guess is that most of the 9 teams with even greater bullpen usage are mostly on the struggle bus - Brewers have warranted confidence in getting 4 IP/game out of their pen, whereas others may do it mostly out of necessity from having questionable length from their starters.

    Still missing McCullers... With every Miz start from now to the end of the regular season, it's likely shorter outings and 5 days of rest (at least). He's been like a night off for the bullpen, but I think 6 innings at most the rest of the way, is what the expectation should be,

    I just wanted to acknowledge Grant Anderson this morning and congratulate him on getting the vulture-style win. Seriously, he’s low-key valuable as a guy you can get some low leverage innings from (or maybe sneaky high leverage like yesterday keeping a one run deficit a one run deficit). I get that he’s not the first choice out there, but he generally does his job to eat some innings in specific scenarios.

    Getting in the top 2 is a major advantage, but getting the top seed is not exactly meaningless. In addition to home-field, you also avoid the 3-seed in the second round. I agree that top 2 is more important, though.

    I think McCullers is also available, and was a little surprised they didn’t try him with a 5-run lead yesterday. It’ll be interesting to see who trots out to the mound if there’s a save situation in the 9th today…

    Lockridge is supposed to be available “in late July”, so theoretically, he’ll be the more logical permanent replacement when he’s able. Just need someone for a couple weeks.

    Things I've thought... 1. I miss Monasterio. 2. We have too many starting pitchers. 3. Bauers will play sparingly, primarily as a backup for Vaughn. 4. The Brewers should just go get that mythical 3B with power and good defense who's available at the deadline (who won't cost much, either)

    There’s lots of players who are full time switch hitters. My guess is that the majority of players have at least tried it out because of the potential advantages. Why not try it out in a near zero risk scenario? It’s so far down the disrespect rankings.

    I’ve been worrying about this damn doubleheader and the strain it would cause on the bullpen for weeks. The need to overuse the pen in AZ did nothing but intensify my concerns. What Miz and Gasser did today from an innings eating standpoint was beyond reasonable expectations. Bullpen still has a couple of guys who could use another day, but it’s in way better shape than I thought they’d be.

    They've really got to use some of the "other guys" in the pen. Using Ashby/Uribe to get us over the finish line in that one was the right call, but we still have to cover 6 more games in the next 6 days. I'd try to save Megill and Patrick for tomorrow and no more Ashby and Uribe tonight, either. Gasser going 6 would be awesome, and rely on the other 5 arms, with I'd guess Yoho as closer.
