    Lotta baseball left. Of the 34 games left, there's really only 12 against teams currently not realistically in the mix for making the playoffs. The current magic number is 30 vs. the Cubs, and as previously mentioned, if MKE wins 3 of those, they earn the season tiebreaker, which would get the magic number down to 23 for the other 27 games; if they only take 2, it'd be a magic number of 26 for those 27 games, and then it might get dicey.

    My weather app is saying 85% chance of rain on Sunday for Williamsport, but mostly earlier in the day - I like when other teams play in these novelty affairs...At least they're headed in the right direction with a 3-game set against the Mets starting Tuesday. It'd be nice to get some length out of Miz today with Ashby and Patrick probably down. With Sale on the bump for them, there's a stronger likelihood of using Hall/Senzatela/Wilson/Anderson in a higher-than-normal (for them) leverage situation. ATL has comparable metrics to MKE - they're obviously one of the top teams, but they get to their pretty good OPS through good/great slug rather than OBP.

    Based on the comment that the magic number compares one team vs another, as of the afternoon of 8/20 (* = MKE owns tiebreaker): NLC: CHC: 30 STL: 20* PIT: 18 CIN: 17 Others of note: LAD: 32* ATL: 31 PHI: 26 (Phils are as close to ATL as CHC is to MKE, and also have 7 games H2H left) SD: 24 AZ: 22* (this is a key one as it would mean clinching the postseason - next closest is MIA at 19*) COL: 6* (won't be long now - SF is next at 9)

    Y'know, I deliberated over this exact thing, and my mind landed on being better than SD would guarantee beating them out for the last spot. Me confuzzled.

    Prior to the games on 8/18 (and I'm doing this by the formula: 163 - current # of Brewer wins - other team's current # of losses): To win the division: 33 Other magic numbers: To finish with a better record than LAD: 34 (due to tiebreaker owned by MKE) To finish with a better record than ATL: 35 To clinch any playoff spot (SDP currently has #3 WC): 27 First team that MKE can clinch having a better record than (i,e., the worst team - currently Colorado, but SF is in hot pursuit): 11

    I was interested in this comment so I looked a little bit - their pitchers are #1 at not walking people, while Brewers' hitters are #2 in drawing walks, That sounds like bad news for us - we rely on the walk for offense and they don't give'em. That also tends to keep pitch counts down,

    Splitting hairs on terminology here - I think Miz is the "most elite talent" on the club. Turang is the probably has been "best overall player". I still say Bauers is MVP, all things considered - his un-elite defense is why there's any hesitation, but the offense and the non-stats-based things make him extremely valuable to this particular club,

    No disagreement with the bolded, and I don't dispute that Miz and Turang are outstanding. What I don't think gets accounted for in the stats (but I could be mistaken) is Bauers' ability to play OF allows the lineup to include him, Vaughn, and a DH in the same batting lineup (I'm assuming you don't want Vaughn playing 3B when Pratt returns). Plus the clubhouse veteran leadership thing...

    The whole roster/budget management is beyond my abilities to comprehend what is the "right thing to do". Add that to the uncertainty of next season existing and I have literally less than zero idea. All's I know is a) he's our best player currently, and b) he has positional flexibility which often comes in handy, and is a particularly valued trait in this organization.

    Bauers has been the Brewers' MVP, You might get an argument about Turang or Miz, but his ability to play corner outfield positions (albeit not at a high level) and thus allow other important bats to be in the lineup pushes him to the top, IMO. Also seems to be a clubhouse guy, too. Thinking back to all our expectations at the start of the season, that bolded statement would have been both ludicrous and concerning. I'd really like him to be part of the team beyond this year - but I understand how this works, too.

    It really is starkly different to be in the AL, and especially if you're in the AL Central or West. The Twins are 57-59 and a half game out of the WC and 3 out of the division. For comparison, they'd be tied with the Reds (4 games back of the WC with 4 teams ahead of them and 15.5 back in the division). Twins are a decent-ish team offensively, but give up a lot of runs (-35 in run differential). Let's get this offense in gear, shall we?

    They alluded to this on the broadcast, but Miz is bothered by the landing area on the mound today. This has happened in other away games, too. And as I typed this, it became apparent again.

    Just as a public service announcement - when sports are exclusively on Peacock, it usually also goes on the NBC Sports Network. Services like YTTV (which I have) carry that network. So, I'm getting it today.

    The Angels' city connect uniform is probably the least different from their normal ones than any other team. Not saying that's a good or bad thing, just an observation

    This is the advantage of playing sellers at this exact moment in time.

    They're only sorta in it - several teams between them and either a division (where they're 4th) or a WC berth (5 teams to pass). With guys like Skubal and maybe others, if they don't move them they miss a chance to re-stock their roster that they won't have if they hold on to them and then just lose them to free agency. The smart thing to do would be to sell, but teams aren't always smart.

    Color me concerned. There was a report that Pannone had joined the team in the dugout yesterday, so something was known. We'll see who goes off the roster - it has to be a pitcher. OTOH, with Harrison back soon, if Drohan is hurt, that solves who goes out of the rotation.

    I know he's a popular punching bag around here, but he did play the position when Vaughn was hurt at the beginning of the year. Not particularly well, perhaps, but he is an option ahead of a lot of others. I wonder about Contreras, if for no other reason than his brother plays the position a bit.

    Chourio, Mitchell, Bauers, Lara, and Vaughn cannot all be in the field at the same time. Whoever sits will be commented upon, without fail.

    I really don't follow the Cubs that closely - he must have been really bad on a team that is starving for arms (or at least that was the impression I had). Or, are some of their injured guys coming back now?

    I have no personal connection to anything related to this, but does anyone know which came first between the MB glove and Whalers? Seems like the same general idea...

    ...and Stallings Getting to the point where Ashby, Megill, and especially Abner need some work. Sproat, unfortunately, tends to provide work opportunities for the bullpen,,, I like a TyMahle with rice and pinto beans. Giants are a little above average in OPS, but are 25th in runs scored, They're a little below average in runs allowed (19th). Overall, they aren't a good team, but they shouldn't be as horrid as their record - only 3 games ahead of the Rox...

    It appears Murphy’s going with a 3-man rotation with Pratt, Ortiz, and ol’ Bunty. Pratt and Joey have been the hotter bats, but getting every third day off is good for keeping the tank full, at least.

    I’m a little more surprised it was Stallings and not Hall. He and Harrison both on their way, so a temp assignment for Stallings, I’d assume.
