It was a classic four-game affair. Two mid-day slates. Two evening tilts. Thankfully, the Shuckers were there to squeak one out. The affiliates mustered a 1-3 day overall and were outscored 21-8 in the process. We'll look to greener pastures tomorrow but, for now, let's get into today's Minor League report! INF Tyler Black gets another nod here for his continued ability to get on base, swipe bases, and generally wreak havoc in the batters box. RHP Tyson Miller gets a nod here for building on his recent successful call-up with more scoreless impactful bullpen work. OF Luis Lara gets recognition for a 2-for-4 day, another stolen base, and just generally being an advanced player beyond his years. INF Jon Singleton gets one last memorial run around the game ball base paths as he heads to the waters of Minor League Free Agency. One last Singleton 'Tag'. One last mention. It's been a true pleasure watching Big Jon in a Sounds uniform. All the best to an extremely likable athlete and one of my favorite baseball stories in recent memory. Transactions: INF Jon Singleton cleared waivers (DFA'd by the Brewers) and elected Minor League Free Agency en lieu of an assignment with the Nashville Sounds. LHP Eric Lauer was placed on the Nashville Sounds 'Temporarily Inactive List' INF Keston Hiura was activated by the Nashville Sounds off the 7-Day IL - he had been rehabbing with the ACL Brewers Final: Norfolk (Orioles) 8, Nashville 3 Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Sounds' site, game details, please visit and review: Sounds Offense Sputters in Loss to Tides Well, if that headline doesn't sound familiar to Brewers fans. This was a 4-3 ball game heading into the ninth frame despite the final score. The Sounds, perhaps, were done in by an untimely out at third base in the bottom of the 6th frame. Trailing 4-2 at the time, C Alex Jackson ripped a deep ball high off the right center field wall and wanted to stretch it to a three-bagger. Naquin had scored from second base on the deep ball. It was suddenly 4-3. A fresh man on the bags could have meant a rally. Instead, the inning ended shortly thereafter with a thud: RHP Caleb Boushely gave his club 6 IP but was ultimately done in by a solo shot, a triple, and a sac fly. His line reads 6 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 4 ER. He fell to 3-4 on his season. 1) The wheels have started to wobble on the tracks for RHP Thyago Vieira. What was a storybook beginning to his Sounds career - nine consecutive scoreless dominant outings - has been almost diametrically opposite over his last six appearances. We might politely call this a 'rough patch'. After tonight's, 1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 HR, 2 K, we are looking at the following unsightly line in June: 7 1/3 IP, 13 H, 12 K, 5 BB, 9 ER, 11.05 ERA, 2.45 WHIP, and 0.394 BAA. It sure would be nice if Vieira and Biloxi's RHP Cam Robinson had a get-together to heal their woes and get back to dominating hitters. We can put any thoughts of a call-up well on the back burner until if and when this is cleaned up. 2) A 2-for-16 mark with RISP and 8 men LOB is not typically a winning combo on most nights. Norfolk, on the other hand, despite their two fielding errors, capitalized with a 2-for-5 mark with RISP while only stranding three men on base. This was all they needed as their pitching staff was adeptly able to work around seven Sounds knocks and five free passes. This was just one of those baseball nights. On to the next. 3) Rehabbing RHP Matt Bush now has 4 BB in 5 IP for the Sounds - he has to clean that up or, as we know, it will come back to haunt him should he get the call back up to the Big Club anytime soon. To continue this relief pitching theme as I close my thoughts on the Sounds, RHP Tyson Miller has likely pitched the best he has all season since his outing June 4th - this includes his impactful two outings with the Brewers before he was optioned. He is hitting his stride at the perfect time and likely starting to show his best stuff. Let's hope he can keep this up. Final: Biloxi 2, Chattanooga (Reds) 1 Box Score / Game LogGame Notes Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Six Shutout Innings from Rodriguez Leads Shuckers to Second Straight Win Beginning the series versus the previously red hot Chattanooga Lookouts 2-0 is no small feat. Consider me very impressed with our young upstart Shuckers. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez managed to work around a troublesome first inning where he walked a batter, hit a batter, and then walked the bases full. Once he induced the inning ending double play, however, he scattered a mere three hits over his final five innings. Rodriguez handed the ball to RHP Ryan Middendorf after completing 6 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 0 ER. This was his fourth quality start of 2023 and he now has 83 K in 62 2/3 IP. It will be very interesting to see what happens once these tacked balls are replaced in the Southern League. Three Quick Strikes: 1) You'd definitely be hard-pressed to find a Shuckers player impacting ball games more than OF Carlos D. Rodriguez has in the month of June. Last night he had a key rbi-double and a key hit in the ninth inning walk-off rally. Tonight, he just continued to make winning plays. He started the scoring with a hard hit infield single in the bottom of the second inning. He also laid out to prevent a lead-off base runner in the top of the eighth inning helping RHP Ryan Middendorf's bottom line in the process: 2) RHP Cam Robinson ultimately picked up the save limiting the Lookouts to one run in the bottom of the ninth. As a stand alone line - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 ER, 1 HR - this is a fine performance. However, if we take this in the totality of outings since mid May, Robinson has now conceded one or more runs in eight of his past eleven outings. It's a rough stretch any way you look at it. We will continue to hope he rediscovers the dominant form of 2022. 3) INF Tyler Black may not have a definitive defensive position, but I shudder to even think the Brewers would consider trading such an immensely talented offensive player. He just does it time and time again. Today, he stole his 39th base, earned two free passes, and hit a single. Regardless of what comes of this season, and Black's career at large, let's all just agree to enjoy every minute of what he is putting on tape in 2023. I said it last night and I'll say it again: we are watching Biloxi Shuckers record-breaking history. Final: Lansing (Athletics) 7, Wisconsin 1Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Lansing Cycles Past Wisconsin 7-1 Another much improved RHP Cameron Wagoner start. And, yet, another Timber Rattlers loss. He falls to 1-9 on his season filled with ups and downs. Wagoner has definitely been better lately, to be clear. Even in the better bottom-line outings, Wagoner is conceding contact and he's been walking more batters of late - 6 BB in has past two starts. If May is the anomaly, Wagoner is still allowing a 0.269 BAA in April and June. All this being said, he definitely did enough today to give his team the chance to compete and take a victory: 4 2/3 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 ER. He left the ballgame with his team only trailing 2-0. That will play on most nights. Hopefully, he keeps trending up and can keep fine-tuning his offerings and approach. If we are to look at anything, for me it is the walks and lack of control that began in May - to the tune of nearly a walk an inning (7 BB in 7 1/3 IP). He has now walked four more batters in 5 2/3 IP in June. If you couple this with a 0.292 BAA and a 1.94 WHIP in the same month of June, you can see why that ERA has sky-rocketed to a season worst 11.12 over the month's four outings. This seems like a classic case of a talented pitcher trying to over-correct things in search of his former best stuff. We can only hope he finds that old groove and gets through this rough patch. 2) I've been alluding to this in recent write-ups, but I want to show you what I'm talking about. INF Robert Moore has gotten back to that tight and compact swing plane that gives him his highest success. Take a look at this sac fly. No wasted movement. This was a purpose-driven swing: He continues to trend up as I see it. If there is an ongoing area of improvement Moore 'should' address it would have to be his ongoing issues caught stealing - his 9th CS and a PO today mar his overall output. 3) OF Joe Gray Jr. extended his hitting streak to nine games - his longest of his 2023 season. His trip to Double-A Biloxi certainly didn't go as planned, however, he has returned to Wisconsin with a workmanlike approach and continues to build on a much better season in 2023. I don't know where he goes from here in a stacked organizational outfield picture. But, if he continues to build on these early months, his baseball future will remain bright. Hopefully, he earns another opportunity for a return trip to the Southern League. Final: Lynchburg (Guardians) 5, Carolina 2Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review both game summaries: Avina Hits 2-Run Blast in 5-2 Carolina Loss RHP Patricio Aquino had an uncharacteristic rough start. He has been mostly fantastic this season so we'll toss it up as a mulligan. 3 2/3 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 1 HB, 2 K, and 3 ER is not what the doctor ordered. The three earned runs coming in the top of the first really took the wind out of the sails as the Mudcats ship ultimately barely left the harbor. Three Quick Strikes: 1) Let's just start with the good. He's been on some kind of run of late. He's been the most consistently clutch bat in a line-up desperately in need of clutch. OF Hedbert Perez deserves the extended recognition: 2) INF Luke Adams is making better line drive contact - he seems to be getting past his early-season penchant for pop-ups. This is a great sign. But, as a budding young talent there will always be things to work on. Fine-tuning his approach on the base paths and continuing to avoid sloppy mechanics when over relying on his innate athleticism while throwing the ball will go a long way to accelerating his advancements. He went 2-for-3 today but he also committed his second throwing error in two days (his 7th on the season). It's such a tricky thing to pull the whole package together. We've seen several hints of what might be in store throughout this first half of Low-A ball. Miles to go. 3) RHP Yujanyer Herrera is simply a different pitcher since he injured himself in the very early going of his May 3rd start at Delmarva. I just don't see the same young man on the mound. I don't know if it's a confidence issue, a rough patch, or a lingering issue but after reaching 4 2/3 IP, 5 IP, and 5 IP consecutively before the injury departure Herrera hasn't reached 5 IP since. Perhaps, the early case of 'the walks' simply caught up to him and it was already in the tea leaves? It's hard to say. But, the current trajectory is not a sustainable pitching path. We are back to a full slate of 8 games tomorrow - phew! The Sounds and Tides will make-up Monday's rain out with a double header. We'll have DSL games all morning long. We'll have the ACL Crew in the wee hours of the desert evening. RHP Justin Jarvis will try to bounce back from his worst outing of 2023 his last time out as the Shuckers will look to build a 3-0 series lead. We were back to a full seven-game Brewers Minor League bonanza. I don't know about you, but I love Brewers Minor League baseball. These full days give me great joy. Well, until a game is postponed! As per usual, we had the DSL Cerveceros entertaining our morning hours. We had the starts to our four affiliate home series happening throughout the early evening. And, we had the ACL Crew closing shop in the late hours of the desert southwest. Let's get into the report! /images-custom/google-analytics/author-tracker.gif Image courtesy of Biloxi Shuckers Game Balls: I am running out of adjectives to describe INF Tyler Black's season. His defense is trending in a better direction at the hot corner - he made a fantastic stab and throw home to grab a key out early though he was eaten by a hard chopper later in the game - and everything he does offensively turns to gold. He notched his 38th stolen base in 53 games. He ripped his 9th homer 414 feet to left center - 99 mph off the bat. I have a legitimate baseball man crush. RHP Logan Henderson answered the bell and then some tonight. This game definitively had a feel of "If he's not on a pitch count in his ongoing recovery and build-up, we're looking at a quality start." He ended his night after 5 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 9 K. Just a stellar outing featuring his full arsenal of dominant tools. RHP Jacob Misiorowski wasn't as efficient as his former Low-A counterpart in RHP Logan Henderson, but consider this: he has yet to concede a single run since his High-A promotion. I personally feel these High-A umps don't really know how to call several of his pitches as I see numerous blown calls in every outing. He has so much movement in those sliders and breaking balls, I almost feel the umps fail to see those blazing heaters. None the less, Misiorowski gets the nod here with his ability to meet such a big moment in his career and come away entirely unscathed - 4 2/3 IP, OF Tristen Lutz gets the nod here for his beauty of a line drive to CF to improbably walk-off Chattanooga. He had missed a deep fly to RF the first pitch he saw. He knew he was reading the heater. Kudos to him for waiting for his pitch and ripping it for the ice bath. RHP Brennan Jordan gets the nod for playing the part of a closer in the seventh inning. More below. His pivotal 1 1/3 IP helped ensure the T-Rats shutout remained intact. Transactions: RHP Nick Merkel was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers from the Carolina Mudcats In a corresponding move, 20-year-old RHP Jose Chavez, in what was his third consecutive ACL season with the Brewers, was rewarded with an assignment to the Carolina Mudcats from the ACL Brewers. Fantastic news for the young hurler. OF Roman Quinn was released by the Nashville Sounds - best of luck, Mr. Quinn! Via the Shuckers' site, game details, please visit and review: Shuckers Score Three in the Ninth, Tristen Lutz Smashes Walk-Off Single for 8-7 Win Fresh off a frustrating 2-4 series at Montgomery (a series that truly could have gone either way after a fairly indicative 2-2 start), the Shuckers were back home facing the Chattanooga Lookouts. RHP Jason Alexander was bumped up from his ACL rehab work to man the hill for the Shuckers squad - his first Southern League start since 2021. After a delayed start, we were underway just over a half hour late. I was excited to see Alexander for the first time in 2023. I will just say, what was quite apparent in Alexander's first upper-levels action of 2023 is a few things: the Southern League most definitely isn't the ACL, the Lookouts offense is red hot, and Alexander's outing exemplified how challenging it is to pitch in the Southern League as a generality. I see it time and time again. Tacked balls or no tacked balls. Through 2 IP, Alexander had given up many a hit - the cheap and expensive variety - and it continued into the third frame. All in all, Alexander left after three complete and had runners on the bags every inning: 3 IP, 8 H, 1 BB, 5 ER, 1 K. To borrow from old Shuckers fan Obi-Wan Kenobi: "These are not the Starts you're looking for." He sat down with super prospect, INF Tyler Black, on Tuesday to discuss his 35 game record-setting on-base streak among other things. The interview will likely be posted HERE some time tomorrow. Three Quick Strikes: 1) LHP Russ Smith badly needed this relief outing. It was in all likelihood his most consistent showing in Double-A since his promotion. He looked sure of himself, I loved his body language, and he was pitching fast. The results naturally followed. His defense certainly didn't do him any favors either. All told, he finished with 3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 ER. Can we use this as our baseline, Mr. Smith, and trend upward from here? I'd love to see it. A very pleasantly surprising outing that proved pivotal to the comeback. 2) INF Freddy Zamora, now healthy, remains an utterly perplexing prospect for me. He is an extremely smooth-moving athlete but by my eyes he makes entirely too many routine errors for my liking. I don't know if it's a concentration issue - I simply don't know what it is. But, for a young man who has an elite defensive reputation, I sincerely have yet to see anything closely resembling this reputation on a consistent basis. He let a slow grounder take its time to his glove early and he then rushed an inaccurate throw to 1B for a throwing error (his 9th registered error of 2023). This allowed the runner to advance to second base. He wasn't charged with an error, but he botched a grounder on a dribbler up the middle. I would argue there was a play to be made and it left his relief arm in LHP Russ Smith in serious trouble. All in all, we are talking about a 94% fielding percentage over 1280 Minor League innings for a soon to be 25-year-old. Somebody convince me otherwise. 3) The real testament to the comeback ninth inning was the line-up rallying the troops after C Jeferson Quero was tagged out in a run down after he rounded second base thinking the CF throw was coming home. It could have been a runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out scenario. It wound up a sole runner on with one down. Key AB's from Wes Clarke, Ethan Murray, and Carlos Rodriguez kept the mojo going. Tristen Lutz just put the finishing touch on what was a fantastic inning for the young men. There are ample wordplay adventures to be had in the post-game affiliate articles this week - hopefully, trusty Chris Mehring is up to the task! RHP Jacob Misiorowski was home for his very first start in front of the T-Rats faithful. With such a highly-touted prospect, the Fox Cities venue was jam-packed with fans. It was a wonderful sight for this Brewers Minor League aficionado. All in all, I would say tonight's outing wasn't Misiorowski's most dominant outing of 2023 - which is a testament to how dominant he can be and has been. But, considering the circumstances, and considering he has yet to concede a High-A run, we're certainly not going to complain. When all was said and done, Misiorowski was begrudgingly pulled (he wanted to continue, quite clearly) after 4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K. Three Quick Strikes: 1) A definitive key moment to victory came in the top of the seventh inning. Manager Joe Ayrault went to trusty late-inning Ace, RHP Brannon Jordan, who grabbed a crucial punch out with runners on the corners and two down. After that K, Jordan gave one more scoreless frame before handing the ball to RHP Luis Amaya who grabbed his second save in his third try of 2023. 2) INF Robert Moore continues to play a definitively more on-brand style of baseball. This current run of productivity is the style of play we all fell in love with in the late summer and early fall of 2022. The 11 SB-to-8 CS remains an unfavorable statistical trend. But, the savvy defensive work at 2B; the better AB's; the tighter swings; and his overall game are in such a better place than they were a month ago. Kudos to him for staying in the grind and getting better results. 3) With not much else to highlight, quite honestly, in a three-hit T-Rats output let's look forward. Good things are coming our way, fans: (Special kudos to Curt Hogg for his work tonight) Final: Lynchburg (Guardians) 4, Carolina 3Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review both game summaries: Mudcats Rally Late in 4-3 Loss to Hillcats With only two days remaining until the first half's end, I was a bit forlorn to see the Mudcats had squeaked back to within 3 1/2 games of first place Down East. Oh, what could have been had the Mudcats been able to complete their recent series versus the Wood Ducks en lieu of the weather-induced cancellations. Alas, we had game one of the home series versus Lynchburg to enjoy. After a clean first frame, RHP Logan Henderson ran into trouble in the second inning. Three consecutive well hit singles into right field off lefty bats saw a run cross and runners on the corners with no outs. However, he got back to the right-handed bats and shut it all down. K, CS, K. Special nod goes to INF Jadher Areinamo who made a ridiculously good play in the diving catch and tag at second base for that second out in the above-mentioned 'CS'. If we toss out those singles - by my eyes, and if my memory serves correct, each knock came from off-speed deliveries - Henderson was special. He had everything working to high effect and it leaves me with a familiar sentiment: if he can just move further from the injury and keep building his strength and stamina. 5 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 9 K. A special outing. A special talent. Three Quick Strikes: 1) Another game. Another one-run loss. The Mudcats made a game of it in the ninth with a two-run mini-rally but INF Jesus Parra and INF Jheremy Vargas went down swinging consecutively to end the threat. I continue to wonder what could have been in this first half had INF Daniel Guilarte stayed healthy and had, say, C Matt Wood's bat stayed in the line-up. We have many things to look forward to in the second half - likely ACL promotions and, hopefully, continued developments at the dish throughout the line-up. But, for me personally, this first half is filled with "Oh, what could have been!" 2) It was a night showcasing continued improvements and results when making contact - including a 100 mph liner smashed over the pitcher and into CF - for INF Luke Adams. But the CS; PO; and throwing error will weigh down those results. Adams went 2-for-3, 1 BB, 1 K, and 2 R. He'll look to avoid those mental lapses moving forward - at least avoid them in bunches. The throwing error was a result of the cavalier attitude Adams has due to his ridiculous athleticism. He made the running throw quite bit more challenging than it needed to be and, as a result, the ball sailed well wide of 1B. 3) OF Kaylan Nicasia was given a charitable triple on his liner to CF in the ninth inning. Kudos to him for the tally. That was a sinking liner that probably should have been caught but definitely ate the lunch of the CF who slipped and face-first fell to the grass. Perhaps it was the rains earlier in the evening and the continued moisture in the air. Regardless, it was a generous gift from the scorer. ACL D-Backs Red 4, ACL Brewers 2 Box Score / Game Log The ACL Crew outhit the D-Backs 9-to-5 but they also committed three errors, threw five wild pitches (three from RHP Darling Solano who also had 4 BB and a HB), and hit a batter. The Crew were also a meager 1-for-11 with RISP and ultimately stranded 12 runners overall. And, well, this is the backstory to the 4-2 loss. Sloppy. INF Dylan O'Rae continues to make his mark of late. He managed a 2-for-4 night at the dish but he also swiped two more bases - that's 13-of-13 in 9 games played. A very intriguing stat line. Our very own@sveumrulessaid it best in our Game Thread (HERE): I agree with the sentiments wholeheartedly but I would also point out these AB's are split with red hot C Satchell Norman. Oh, hey, look at us debating Brewers catchers. Shocking, I know. The Crew fell to 8-3 on their season with the disappointing loss. Final: DSL Brewers #1 8, DSL Guardians 3Box Score/Game Log The young DSL Brewers Uno bounced back from yesterday's loss and improved to 8-4 on their young season. 10 stolen bases really sticks out for me when I scan the game logs and box scores - three steals apiece for INF Gery Holguin and INF Luiyin Alastre. Two successful steals home in what were likely a classic double steal scenarios also sticks out - the fundamentals, or lack thereof, often impact these tilts filled with such young aspiring athletes. The Uno took full advantage of the Guardian's five errors as they were actually outhit 8-to-5 overall. This being said, at least there was some good karma for the good guys after they went a woeful 2-for-21 with RISP (!!). Yowza. German C Yannic Walther got some action at 1B today and committed his first fielding error of his season. However, he also continued to swing a hot bat going 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K. Nicaraguan RHP Enniel Cortez got the start and managed 4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 2 ER, 7 K - a very solid start for a young pitcher continuing to make a name for himself in the very early going of his Brewers career (16:1 K:BB in 14 2/3 IP in 2023). His stablemate, Dominican RHP Jesael Cabrera grabbed the victory with his 3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 ER work. Final: DSL Giants Orange 6, DSL Brewers #2 3 Box Score/Game Log The Brewers Dos have now lost two straight and are back to a 0.500 mark at 6-6 overall. Headed into the fifth frame, this game was knotted at 2-2 - an outcome reminiscent of the Crew #2's loss yesterday when a very tight 2-0 deficit turned into a 7-1 route in the final two innings. This being said, the Brewers Dos were outhit 7-4 today and apparently never had a single runner in scoring position whereas they held the Giants to a 1-for-7 mark with RISP. In other words, it could have been worse but it was unlikely to be better. This being said, as per usual, some things pop off the page. Diminutive 18-year-old Dominican OF Ramon Moreno didn't play in 2022 (all we can deduce is he was likely on the 'Restricted List until late September). However, he's certainly catching my attention early in this 2023 DSL season. A 2-for-3 day with 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (his first of 2023), 1 BB, and 0 K has his seasonal output up to a 0.289 BA with a 0.999 OPS in 28 AB's. That' enough to lure us in for more. On the pitching side, we'll recognize 19-year-old Dominican southpaw, David Dominguez, in his finest outing in his third appearance: 2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 ER. It was a day filled with mixed results. All in all, we have to be pleased with the walk-off; two fine pitching outings from two young intriguing arms; and the continued historic season from INF Tyler Black. Tomorrow, we have Wisconsin and Biloxi manning the mid-day contests. We'll have an opportunity to watch LHP Thomas Pannone pitch at his favorite ballpark in Nashville where he has been red hot. And, we'll have another opportunity to watch tantalizing young Mudcats RHP Patricio Aquino. There will be no DSL or ACL contests - Wednesday and all. It was another in our ongoing DSL/ACL Mondays. As the title indicates, the Cerveceros did not open their week with a bang - a mild thud was heard throughout both clubhouses. In the evening hours, the ACL Crew played a hard-fought battle and ultimately came out on top. Let's get into the report! Image courtesy of Brewer Fanatic Transactions: None Final: DSL Dodgers Mega 6, DSL Brewers #1 2 Box Score/Game Log That's right the Brewers Uno were bested by the Mega - I don't quite know what's going on with these LA monikers but it is what it is. There's really not all that much to say about either DSL tilt this fine late June Monday. Like the Dos (more below), the Uno were trailing from the get go. However, after the Uno fall to 7-4 overall, let's just key in a few highlights despite the loss : 1) 17-year-old Dominican INF Gery Holguin hit his first long ball of his young season. For a young man who clearly has plate discipline (6 K: 5 BB), there appears to be the old nemesis of a BABIP (0.214) knocking down the statistical side of what is likely a big second DSL year leap. This young man is definitely on my under-the-radar DSL Brewers list. 2) 18-year-old Venezuelan OF Brian Sanchez (turns 19 July 4th), in his first season with the Brewers DSL, is definitely turning heads very early in his tenure. The obvious addendum with all these spotlights, given the season only started in early June, is these sample sizes are so small they are merely a blip on the season's radar. But, with Sanchez, it's a really good small sample. After today's 2-for-3 performance with a double, Sanchez is now in the midst of a five-game on base streak. And, that's all five games he's played as a DSL Uno team member. 13 AB, 7 H, 2 2B, 1 3B, 5 R, 4 RBI, 4 RBI, 5 BB, 1 K, 2 S, 1 CS. I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to more. 3) Nicaraguan RHP Nestor Mena is also in his first season as a DSL Brewer. And, like Sanchez, he is absolutely balling in his very brief tenure. After a very uncharacteristic off-outing for Venezuelan LHP Anthony Flores, Mena shut things down over the final three innings: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 ER. That's now 7 1/3 IP over three outings - 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HB, 1 HR, 1 ER, 0.154 BAA, 0.65 WHIP, 1.23 ER. A really intriguing beginning. Final: DSL Dodgers Bautista 7, DSL Brewers #2 1 Box Score/Game Log The Brewers Dos faced perhaps the most formidable squad in the entire DSL. The Dodgers Bautista came into this tilt 10-0 and they sent two runs across on what looks like a failed double play in the top of the first inning. Not the start the Dos were looking for. Contrary to the final score, that 2-0 lead held into the sixth inning of a seven inning knock, and all five runs came after two outs. I'd say, glancing the play-by-play, this was a lot closer game than the final score indicates. With that being said, we can highlight a few performances: 1) Let's start with the lone Brewers Dos run. This came in the bottom of the sixth frame. Trailing 7-0, the inning began with a single and a walk. DH Pedro Ibarguen sent a line drive single into CF sending across his 4th RBI of his season in the process. Unfortunately, that feel good rally stopped there. A double play ball off the bat of 1B Smarlin Espinal led to the first two outs. LF Danny Puerta grounded out to the pitcher stranding a runner at third base. 2) 18-year-old Nicarguan RHP Bryan Rivera is continuing to make strides in the early going of his second season with the Brewers. After today's 5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 3 K performance, he is looking at a season-long output of 3 GS, 14 1/3 IP, 11 H, 6 BB, 19 K, 1 HB, 2 HR, 6 ER, 0.220 BAA, 1.19 WHIP. This is a solid start that has me intrigued. Let's hope his fourth outing proves to be a difference maker. 3) The Dodgers Bautista were 3-for-9 with RISP and the Brewers Dos were 1-for-10. Interestingly, the Brewers Dos were outhit 10-to-5. The Brewers Dos left eight men on base to the Dodgers Bautista 6. The Brewers Dos pitchers walked four and hit two batters. The Dodgers Bautista walked five and did not hit a batter. This reads very much like a 2-0 game into the late innings that broke open by some opportunistic moments. At least that's how I'm reading the baseball tea leaves. Final: ACL Brewers 4, ACL Rangers 3Box Score/Game Log I recommend you find a moment to listen to Sal Frelick discussing his recent rehab outings for the Brewers ACL (HERE). A couple of things pop out in his interview with Jeff Hem regarding the ACL: the young men down yonder treat every game like their World Series and they are playing in front of essentially no fans in the back fields of a baseball complex. Take a moment to appreciate the journey so many of these young professionals experience. The ACL Crew jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first frame. The Rangers chipped away shortly thereafter and the two teams were tied 3-3 headed into the final innings. 1) Recognition is due to last year's 15th round pick, C Satchell Norman. He seems to be making the most of every opportunity he receives in his second stint in the ACL. Tonight, he hit his first long ball in a 2-for-3 performance - 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR. He also picked off a runner at first base to end the Rangers eighth inning - always a key play when you are clinging to a one run lead. He has reached base in all six games he's played and he has multi-hit games in three of these. My curiosity is piqued. 2) In his most dominant outing to date, Venezuelan RHP Gerson Calzadilla (4 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 ER) definitely showed savvy. After allowing a lead-off ground rule double to start the 7th in a 3-3 tie ball game, he didn't flinch. It was the type of inning that might lead to higher-leverage outings in the days ahead. He followed that double with a ground out, a walk, and two consecutive strikeouts. The Crew scored the go-ahead run two AB's later. 3) Dylan O'Rae may not have the BA or the OPS to turn heads, but watching along in the play-by-play it certainly seems like he is making winning plays. He hit the go-ahead sac fly after OF Reidy Mercado's seventh inning lead-off triple. His sole knock of his evening in a 1-for-3 night came in the first inning - he quickly stole his 11th base and then scored. And, he turned the game-ending double play to seal the Crew's victory. This Norfolk series in Nashville will be a very real test of where the team really stands at present. The Orioles affiliate has been far and away the class of the International League this first half. Can the Sounds build off their six game sweep of the Stripers? OF Hedbert Perez has been ridiculously clutch over the past month. That has to he at least three 9th inning key blasts (?) to either tie; win; or close the gap. An extremely pleasant surge for a very likable player.

And, this was after he was traded to Boston by the Oakland Athletics for ye old 'cash considerations'. He was not on Oakland's active roster but was playing for their Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas (PCL). Since the call up, a day after Boston's acquisition, Reyes has seen steady action in 23 Games where he has registered 59 AB's. After tonight's 2-for-4 performance in the 9-hole, Reyes is hitting 0.305 BA, 0.706 OPS, 6 R, 4 2B, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 S, 1 CS.

I cringe to think of those random 10-game slates we had last summer. Yikes! Big night yesterday evening. I can't help but think a certain talented infielder could help the T-Rats in this ongoing series as we await his return...

That was a really really good performance from the USMNT vs Mexico tonight. 3-0 in that rivalry is nothing to scoff at. And, man, that game got chippy and really devolved. They are going to have an extremely challenging time finding suitable replacements for Dest and McKinney given how well they played.

The Carolina Mudcats are now losers of eight straight games. Their precipitous fall from the mountaintop continues as the first half comes to its close in eight days. Biloxi was rained out and we were deprived of the possibility of that tantalizing line-up for one night (hopefully, just one). Nashville continued to enjoy the fruits of a home series. WIsconsin lost a very tight ball game in Great Lakes. But the ACL Crew evened our day at 2-2 with a late victory. Let's get into the report! He flashed dominance against the best team in the Midwest League. INF Brice Turang gets the nod for his welcome back three-run blast to dead CF. This proved to be the game-winning hit: LHP Thomas Pannone gets the nod for another fantastic start for the Sounds paving the way to victory. He's been a god send for manager Rick Sweet to date. INF Jhonny Severino did it again. His 4th long ball was a two-out two-run kind. What a season so far. He is currently tied for the HR lead in all the ACL and he is 4th in OPS. RHP Jason Alexander gets the final nod with his extremely effective 2nd rehab outing (more below). He seems to get better with every start. Tonight was certainly no different as he gave the Sounds everything they needed and more as they clung to a 1-0 lead into the middle innings. When all was said and done, Pannone put forth 5 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 ER innings. It took only 72 pitches to hand the ball to his bullpen. Three Quick Strikes: 1) My hope for Jesse Winker, as he likely finds his way back to the Brewers, is he looks this comfortable at the dish for the MLB club. He looks so relaxed and is swinging so easy - to really good results to boot. He is quickly making the Sounds a better watch on a nightly basis. Truly. He finished his night 1-for-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K. As the post-game recap article above points out: My hope for OF Sal Frelick is he begins making contact like he did to close 2022. Don't get me wrong, the two free passes in the lead-off slot are wonderful, but in his first game back I saw plenty more weak contact. Let's get back to those hard hit line drives of yesteryear! 2) If you were looking for a feel good RHP Matt Bush rehab outing, unfortunately, I can not give that to you. I saw several of the same issues that have plagued his time with the Brewers. The final line won't reflect this, per se, as the run scored was credited as a passed ball. But, he just wasn't all that sharp. Bush finished a mere 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 R. He'll look to sharpen his tools moving forward. If you're looking for an INF Eddy Alvarez highlight, I got you. Easily one of my favorite Sounds in 2023. A true pleasure to watch in the batters box: 3) It's no secret I am a fairly big fan of RHP Thyago Vieira. I love his story, his journey, and when he's on he is lights out. By and large, he has been fantastic for manager Rick Sweet and the Sounds as a high-leverage bullpen arm. However, if we're being neutral with our assessments of Brewers prospects it's definitely fair to point out: in June, Vieira has definitely hit a patch of uneasiness. This is really the first mild case of hiccups we've seen but we have seen it so it bares mentioning. After tonight's 1 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K outing, Vieira has given up the following in his four outings in June: 5 1/3 IP, 9 H (yikes), 2 HR, 2 BB, 9 K, 5 ER. For as good as he was previous to June, his June has gotten off to a rocky start. Relief work, especially high-leverage work, is a thankless job and numbers can swing to extremes in a hurry. All I am saying is this bares tracking moving forward. Bilox vs Montgomery Game 2 was Postponed: Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 2, Wisconsin 1Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Timber Rattlers' site, game details, please visit and review: Loons Take Game Two 2-1 with Two Unearned Runs Looking to build off an incredibly productive 5-1 start to their ongoing road trip, the Timber Rattlers were looking to their new ace, RHP Jacob Misiorowski, to keep the good times rolling. In addition to such promise on the hill, we have the ongoing new look approaches at the dish - 10 walks and 11 hits yesterday showcasing these new looks. What better place to challenge these new trends than at first place Great Lakes? Misiorowski struggled with the strike zone early - he was scaling back his heat to the 95-97 range as a result. He simply wasn't able to consistently locate any of his pitches as he walked both batters to lead off the second frame. By and large, these weren't egregious misses, but they were misses none the less. Misiorowski ultimately lasted 3 IP of 1 H, 2 BB, 1 WP, 3 K, 0 ER ball. RHP Max Lazar came on in relief and really pitched a quality outing and ultimately deserved a chance at a victory if not for INF Eduardo Garcia's uncharacteristic (in 2023) throwing error on a fairly routine play up the middle. That play 'should' have ended the frame. Unfortunately, it extended it and led to the Loons only two runs of the game. Winning runs at that. Three Quick Strikes: 1) RHP Tanner Shears saw his first action in High-A and what a scenario to see that action. Trailing 2-1 to the best team in the League, on the road, why not toss the young man to the fire? He plunked two batters when pitches sailed up and in - a heater and a breaking ball (which is a nasty offering, by the way). He was touching 94-95 on the heat with his split fingered two-seam grip. All in all, you had to love he overcame an ump blowing two beautiful strikes at the knees; his own loss of control in those brief moments; and a wild pitch. He escaped unscathed and, frankly, was dominant in spells against the best team in the Midwest League. This was a very successful High-A debut. Let's hope it continues! 2) 3B Ben Metzinger made a really nice play to end Shears’ mini-jam and it was not an easy charging play - this needs to be acknowledged as it was clutch. However, tonight he looked nearly entirely lost at the dish. It was eerily reminiscent of the month of May in which he hit 0.185 with a meager 0.500 OPS. He wasn't seeing the ball. And, when he was, the contact was negligible at best. The body language was not good - as you can imagine. In every key spot, he failed to deliver contact that left the infield. He finished his day 0-for-4 with 3 K. He struck out with Miller on first base with two down in the 8th. He popped out to foul territory next to 1B with the bases juiced and nobody out in the 6th. Those are not winning AB's. He'll look to rebound from this performance and get back to what has been working throughout the first half of June. The T-Rats need that bat. 3) I could lament the loss of the feel good C/1B/DH Alex Hall story since his return stateside after truly fantastic play this winter in Australia. But, alas, I'll merely hint at that 😪. INF Robert Moore is back to that beautiful compact and level swing he showcased throughout his 2022 season. When Moore is at his best swinging the bat, his swing is extremely compact; tight; crisp; and quick. He made great contact throughout the night and made a game of things with his solo bomb over the RF wall. It was a no-doubter from contact with the casual immediate bat drop to adorn the smash. He also lined out to LF with another beautiful swing - it was a 'trust the process' winning fly out. This is a really positive turn and I am absolutely here for it. Final: Augusta (Braves) 6, Carolina 5Box Score / Game Log Game Notes Via the Mudcats' site, game details, please visit and review both game summaries: Perez and Sibrian Homer in 6-5 Loss in Augusta RHP Logan Henderson had his worst outing of 2023 and, as it seems to be amongst Brewers owned clubs at present, it came at the absolute worst time. The Mudcats have now lost eight games in a row - those first place days from just a mere two weeks back feel much further away than they are as the Carolina League first half comes to its close. Henderson completed a rough 3 IP with 4 H, 4 BB, 5 ER, 1 HR, and 1 K. A very uncharacteristic outing (all five runs came in the first two frames) when his club needed his best. This is how the cookie is indeed crumbling lately for the upstart Mudcats. Three Quick Strikes: 1) In 2022 we distinctly saw a vastly different version of 1B Jesus Chirinos during his birthday month of July and then throughout August. This season is playing out eerily similar to 2022, if not worse, in the early going. His 0-for-4 showing today with 4 K is a bit of an exclamation point on an extremely disappointing first half. This is especially disappointing considering he absolutely built atop his late summer of 2022 surge with a truly fantastic 2022/2023 Winter League. Playing for Zulia of the Venezuelan Winter League, Chirinos pumped out 111 PA, 0.326 BA, 0.841 OPS, 23 BB, 20 K, 1 2B, 1 HR, 9 R, 19 RBI. I was extremely excited to see him start with Wisconsin. Now, I'm just extremely confused.😂 2) Even though the Mudcats are indeed struggling to right the ship, there are always positives. OF Hedbert Perez has swung a remarkably better bat of late reminding us of the immense talent he still possesses when he holds the lumber. After an extremely sluggish first two months of 2023, Perez is hitting to the tune of 0.263 BA, 0.830 OPS, 2 2B, 2 HR, 2 R, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 10 K, 1 SB. In a line-up missing its best bats, Perez is definitely doing his part to fill part of that void. 3) In a series where the Mudcats have come out of the gates with an 0-2 mark losing by a combined two runs, it behooves us to look at missed opportunities. Through these two losses, the young Mudcats are a combined 2-for-15 with RISP. If they're going to turn things around, let's start there. They owe that to a pitching staff who has been atop the leaderboards throughout the first half. ACL Brewers 7, ACL Athletics 5 Box Score / Game Log With OF Sal Frelick back leading off for the Nashville Sounds, it was tantalizing INF Jhonny Severino leading off in the dry air of the Southwest. And, boy, is he on one. He continued his recent tear with a two-run bomb in the second frame - his 4th long ball on his young ACL season. I don't know about you all, but, I'm starting to allow myself to get excited. RHP Jason Alexander took the hill for his second rehab outing after a not so pretty first one on June 9th. He pitched a scoreless, 1 K first frame and he ultimately finished his evening with a very successful 3 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K, and 0 ER. That's a great start for Alexander as he looks to get back to the higher levels. Unfortunately, this impactful start didn't appear to rub off on ACL Crew middle relievers as the combination of RHP's Darling Solano and Samuel Dario walked eight men in the ACL A's five-run sixth inning. Whew. Thankfully, trusty lefty LHP Osbriel Mogollon was there to help the ACL Crew escape that dreadful inning without further damage. Mogollon continues to showcase his merits with a fantastic job not only shutting down that threat but shutting down any possible threat thereafter. He finished the affair with 3 2/3 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 ER. If we're going to keep touting Severino, and rightfully so, we need to include his stablemate INF Juan Baez who continues his scorching start - before exiting for unknown reasons early (an inning after a caught stealing 3B) in a 'defensive substitution', Baez ended his day 2-for-3 with 1 2B and 1 R. What these two infielders have done in the early going is stunning. Take a look at that box score though, fans, there are intriguing storylines happening up and down that line-up. The ACL Brewers move to 5-2 overall and are tied atop the ACL Central with the Reds. We are back to a jam-packed full seven game slate tomorrow as I return writing duties to my cohorts. We'll see RHP Caleb Boushley try to keep the good times rolling in Nashville. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez will try to lead his teammates to a 2-0 start in Montgomery. RHP Cameron Wagoner will try and deliver another solid outing in a very challenging environment at Great Lakes. The DSL Crew return to action in the early going. The ACL Crew will fill the late bill. Wonderful. Then, by definition, Wisconsin has more lakes! 😅

Turang, Dorrian, Devanney, Alvarez, VanMeter, Michael Brosseau, and VanMeter all adorn the INF dirt. Isaac Collins was called up because he can try to play the OF grass (albeit, not all that well). There isn't any room for a guy who strictly plays 2B with a very inconsistent offensive track record at Double-A. Every one of those guys listed can play 2-3 positions. Heck, they are playing Devanney at 1B. And, with Hiura set to return shortly even he has positional versatility with a much more established track record in Triple-A. AND, for as hot as Valerio has been, he still has a sub 0.700 OPS and is still just hitting 0.252. I see his current run as a classic rebound after his extremely bad luck with BABIP last season. Granted, obviously, if he kept up this torrid streak for another 3-4 weeks I agree with you. I guess what this says is: I don't see this streak lasting. 😅 Anywho, this also brings me to: I sincerely wonder how Valerio is viewed within the organization. I would love to know.

He still could be a very solid MLB reliever. In 2023 it would appear it's in his head. A change of scenery might be very good for him. OR, if he goes unclaimed, a re-assignment (staying in Biloxi or, heck, rediscovering himself in High-A) and continued work in reclaiming his stuff and presence on the mound. He is still just 23 years old. This is a by-product of a significant step back season and a regression after having earned Rule 5 rostered protection. Another team will see the work of 2022 and he will likely get scooped right up.

He hasn't. It only feels that way. This is his second season. And, considering the massive log jam of versatile infield vets with the Sounds, that is most likely not happening any time soon - regardless of how hot his bat stays. We likely have to temper our enthusiasm here because Valerio is so positionally limited. They tried a LF experiment for a handful of games in 2022. That experiment, to date in 2023, has been restricted to INF/OF Isaac Collins. This is a very long-winded way of saying: I find it highly unlikely Valerio is promoted in 2023.😅

As someone who spends the significant portion of my Brewers time watching the Minor League tilts, I greatly appreciate these write-ups. Thank you. PS: That Title is chef's kiss. Well done. Wisconsin has more lakes than Minnesota. And, now the Brewers are proud owners of more 'L's!😂
