  1. Yet another high chopper in the infield eats up the Sounds defense. It is one of those days. A short hop odd bounce chopper makes its way over the charging Singleton's glove and past the back-up in Alvarez and into right field. It's now 5-2 Bats. Still one down. Men on second and third base. I'm signing off. It's one of those outings. I am jonesing for Cam Devanney's glove and arm to return to this infield and help solidify some defense.
  2. Welp, Mejía getting classically umped out of his outing here. Bases are juiced. A run apparently was walked across. One out of the exact same three pitches in the exact same locations on the outside stripe was called a strike. Not a fan of the home plate ump today.
  3. The loss of defense at SS with Turang elevating to the MLB level and Monasterio stepping into every day play is quite the difference here in 2023. He botches yet another play here in the 10th and it allows the ghost runner to advance to third base when he completely misses the scoop on a relatively routine grounder to his right as he was covering and holding the runner on second base. This has been his biggest issue as a Minor League player to date and it is again rearing its head in the early part of the 2023 season. I don't know if they'll call that a single or an error but it was a fairly bad mistake in a key spot. The scorer politely does not attribute an error. That play, however, was the difference in the inning.
  4. And...we're on to Extras yet again. Quite the opening series. After the walk, we saw a Peyton Henry fly out to shallow right field; Eddie Alvarez struck out on a pitch low and inside; and Andruw Monasterio grounded out to SS with what appeared to be a very close call at 1B.
  5. OF Skye Bolt leads off the Sounds ninth with a four pitch walk (Ball 3 was a pitch clock violation). Let's hope we can get him across and pull out the series sweep!
  6. Mejía answers the bad luck chopper with consecutive off speed punch outs - look to be sliders by the naked eye. He's hitting the zone with ease today. Fine form early. Two down and the runner still on first base. And he gets the ground out to Toro at third to end a clean frame of work. The Sounds will indeed get the opportunity for their third walk-off victory.
  7. The Bats now have three high chopper infield hits today. Quite something. Just balls smashed into the ground and catapulting a good 20 feet in the air. Unreal. The Bats lead off their 9th frame with a man on first base.
  8. With Ethan Small completing his fine work, RHP JC Mejía will see his first action of 2023. Let's hope he can keep it a 2-2 ball game giving the Sounds a chance to walk it off yet again.
  9. Hey, a season opening Series win at Chicago to kick off 2023? I'll take it!
  10. Do NOT run on Navarreto, folks. I've been saying it for awhile. With a lead runner on first base and two down, Navarreto throws out the Reds runner by 3 feet. He has such an accurate throw to second base. Wonderful stuff.
  11. Small is throwing darts with his heater today through two batters. Two consecutive batters. Only heat. Sitting 92 but touching 95. Two straight K's to start his 2023. You love to see it!
  12. LHP Ehtan Small, in his first action in 2023, comes on to strike out Joey Votto on a high heater. One down for Small and the lead off runner (single off of Robinson to CF) still on first base.
  13. With runners on first and second base, and one down, Frelick hits a rope but right at the SS sitting deep behind and to the left of second base. Alvarez is double off second base quite easily. On to the 8th frame now and it's still 2-2. Robinson is on for his second frame.
  14. Absolutely. He was a little bit wild but that ump also kind of screwed him on a few borderline heaters. That tailing movement has to be hard to track for umps as well.
  15. Henry can't come through and Singleton is stranded. He hits a chopper up the middle and is thrown out easily at first base. RHP Cam Robinson is on now for his first action of 2023. Let's hope he has his best stuff!
  16. Big Jon missed his first HR earlier by a matter of inches up the barrel on an inside pitch. His next AB he rips an absolute dart deep and high off the CF wall to dead center and legs out a double with an incredible slide at second base. He advances to third base on a wild pitch but Skye Bolt pops up lazily to short. Two down now and Peyton Henry will try to bring him home.
  17. Andrews calms his nerves and delivers preventing further damage. He induces a chopper down the third base line and then grabs a swinging strikeout and really dials his off-speed stuff to end the frame on a weak dribbler in front of the mound. It's 2-2 now and on to the Sounds bottom of the 6th.
  18. LHP Clayton Andrews gets his first action of the 2023 season and it's a rude greeting. A first pitch inside heater to Joey Votto is roped through the center infield for a single off Alvarez's glove. The ensuing batter rips an opposite field double deep to the wall in left center. It's a 2-2 game. Zero outs. Junk will not get a decision.
  19. It would appear Junk's day is finished after 5 complete IP. He ends on a beautiful high breaking ball on a 3-2 pitch to grab his fifth punch out. I wouldn't say he was particularly sharp but he was effective and we got to see all his offerings. A fine first outing all in all.
  20. Boy that Wrigley Ivy sure looks beautiful in late spring. Whewwwww. Who barfed on that there brick wall?!?
  21. Junk faces his first test in the 4th frame. With two down he walks his second batter of the game and on a 2-1 pitch gives a rope double to the deep center right grass on a center cut heater. The lead reduced to 2-1 Sounds, Toro makes a fine stab of a well hit liner off a center cut curveball (a mistake pitch, honestly) and throws the runner out at first. On to the bottom half.
  22. I'm already Monty Burns hands envisioning Frelick leading off. Unleash the gazelles, I say! May they run rampant all over the diamond!
  23. Carlos Rodriguez getting that promotion to Biloxi! Let's Go! Stay healthy, young man. Much deserved given what we saw pre-ACL in 2022. Middendorf and Meeker is going to be a fun combo out of the Pen!
  24. Excited for Sibrian to get the opportunity to show his skills. A very underrated but skilled catcher behind the dish.
