  1. Sure. But if we're talking about best starting pitcher close to free agency, deGrom hasn't pitched even 100 innings in three years. Burnes pitched nearly as many innings in 2022 (202) as deGrom has in the past three seasons combined (224). If I’m pushing all the chips to the middle of the table, I’m betting on Burnes.

  3. It's not. Maybe Burnes doesn't get a nine year deal but if he enters free agency healthy, he's looking at a $300m deal easily. MLB contracts only escalate. Corbin Burnes is the best pitcher in baseball. If he enters free agency, or even comes close to it, he will receive a $300m deal. Do you think the Dodgers or Mets care if he's worth $40m in 2030?

  5. First, the $180m was for his six FA years, essentially making it an eight year contract. I was ignoring the arb seasons. In any actual contract, I'd hope the Brewers front-load those arb years to reduce the later years' payroll burden. How much do you think Burnes is going to make in free agency? And how many years do you think he's going to get? Gerrit Cole signed a nine year, $324m contract after the 2019 season. That's a $36m AAV and it's now going on three seasons old. Burnes is going to ask for big money and big years. If the Brewers strike now, six years is a bargain. Come this time next year, a six year extension will be off the table, Burnes will be looking for 7-10.

  7. Yeah, I'd also like to see the Brewers retain him but it's hard to see them spending that much in the wake of the Yelich deal.

  9. That's kind of what I was thinking. Maybe it's possible to extend Burnes right now to a $180m, six year deal. But it's going to require a lot of money and a lot of years. And if it's not done this offseason, I suspect that price will nearly double.

  11. There might be a remote chance to get 1-2 years of FA Woodruff if the Brewers really incentivize his remaining two years of arbitration. Burnes, nope. I don't see him accepting anything less than a long-term deal that goes well over $100m in free agent money.

  13. Their latest regime is from the Astros. I think they took over around... 2016? Going from memory here so I could be off by a year or two. They haven't traded prospects because they've been aggressively building the farm until now.

  15. I think you're underestimating the payroll potential of Baltimore once they decide to become competitive. They can pretty easily carry a payroll similar to teams like Philadelphia (maybe just a step below but close) should they decide to do so. And given their competition and division, Orioles fans should throw a fit if the team doesn't do that. They suffered for a long time waiting for a competitive organization, they should demand ownership to start carrying a payroll commensurate with their market size.

  19. I shop Burnes this offseason but I'm not trading him unless a team like the Orioles comes in hot. If someone offers me four global 100 guys I like that includes two close-to-MLB players and two pitchers, I pull the trigger. If someone offers me three global 100 prospects I really like, maybe I also trade him. Basically, I make and receive calls but unless someone comes with a truly serious offer, I focus on what Burnes can give the team in 2023 in reevaluate in July.

  21. His age is probably a factor in any trade, too. While d'Arnaud looks pretty appealing right now, he could drop off a cliff at any moment playing catcher in an age 34 season. Not that I'm saying he *will* drop off a cliff but 34 year old catchers make me nervous.

  23. That's exactly it. The positional pipeline looks promising right now. It's the pitching pipeline I'm slightly concerned about. Some arms certainly emerged out of Wisconsin this season but I'd like to see more before I'm comfortable believing the organization has the pitching nut cracked a la Cleveland.
  24. I'm even less confident than that. I'm not entirely convinced the Brewers have a Cleveland-esque pitching pipeline. Yeah, Burnes and Woodruff are outstanding but I'm going to need more data points before I'm convinced this organization can conjure good starting pitching at will, as Cleveland seems to do every season.
