  1. I just found this photo of Sheffield from the 1980 little league World Series and had to share it.

  3. I’m all on board with that contract but don’t know if it’s financially viable for the Brewers unless they bump payroll considerably. Yelich’s deal is really becoming an albatross for the franchise (not knocking Yelich in any way but that’s the reality of the situation).
  4. Welcome to the site!
  5. Out of curiosity, why Urshela? I view Wong and Urshela as very similar players making very similar money.
  6. I don't see him getting a third year, especially in the same breath as deGrom only getting two. Even if you believe Verlander will get a third year, those two contracts don't make a lot of sense alongside one another.
  7. I’m sure there are loads of former front office execs I’d love to hear talk about baseball. As it turns out, Jim Bowden ain’t one of them, yet he’s the one with the job.

  9. That deGrom contract is interesting. The Verlander one is pretty LOL both in dollars and length. That Senga does seem pretty high, especially at those few years. And yeah, that Diaz number is less than what Liam Hendriks got. How does Bowden even have a job at The Athletic? Honest question.

  11. We have a lot more coming down the pipeline, too! This coming week is a three-parter with Brandon Knarr.
  12. Mike Trout is also a fine comp. But realize Buxton was “healthy” for exactly zero games this season and posted an fWAR of 4.0 in 92 games while DHing every third day because he could barely walk. As someone who has watched Buxton a lot, he’s prime Trout-level good when he’s healthy, he’s just never healthy. Anyway, we’re kinda derailing here. We disagree on this and that’s fine. Let’s move on to how else you’re wrong instead of containing this derailment. ?

  14. I think a good comp to this conservation is Byron Buxton. When he’s on the field and healthy, he’s probably the best CF in baseball. The problem is he’s on the field healthy so rarely that no one can really call him that. The same applies to the past two seasons of deGrom and he’s not getting younger.

  16. deGrom is amazing, no doubt about it. But I just cannot ignore his health issues. Anyone who throws that hard is really concerning as they age into their 30s. I would be terrified to sign deGrom to a long term deal.

  18. Sure. But if we're talking about best starting pitcher close to free agency, deGrom hasn't pitched even 100 innings in three years. Burnes pitched nearly as many innings in 2022 (202) as deGrom has in the past three seasons combined (224). If I’m pushing all the chips to the middle of the table, I’m betting on Burnes.

  20. It's not. Maybe Burnes doesn't get a nine year deal but if he enters free agency healthy, he's looking at a $300m deal easily. MLB contracts only escalate. Corbin Burnes is the best pitcher in baseball. If he enters free agency, or even comes close to it, he will receive a $300m deal. Do you think the Dodgers or Mets care if he's worth $40m in 2030?

  22. First, the $180m was for his six FA years, essentially making it an eight year contract. I was ignoring the arb seasons. In any actual contract, I'd hope the Brewers front-load those arb years to reduce the later years' payroll burden. How much do you think Burnes is going to make in free agency? And how many years do you think he's going to get? Gerrit Cole signed a nine year, $324m contract after the 2019 season. That's a $36m AAV and it's now going on three seasons old. Burnes is going to ask for big money and big years. If the Brewers strike now, six years is a bargain. Come this time next year, a six year extension will be off the table, Burnes will be looking for 7-10.

  24. Yeah, I'd also like to see the Brewers retain him but it's hard to see them spending that much in the wake of the Yelich deal.
